Author Paul Koudounaris explored the profound emotional and cultural significance of pet death and animal memorials, emphasizing their purity and directness compared to traditional human death rituals. He highlighted how grieving for pets often feels more personal and intimate, as the bond between humans and their pets is deeply private and reflective. Pets, Koudounaris argued, become mirrors of their owners, and their passing can feel like losing a part of oneself. This unique grief is compounded by societal norms that downplay the mourning of animals, even though most people experience the loss of a pet, he added.Koudounaris detailed the diverse global practices surrounding pet death, from elaborate Asian rituals conducted by Buddhist monks to specialized cemeteries in the United States, such as those exclusively for bird dogs or coon dogs. He underscored the rich cultural variations in honoring animals, from handcrafted wooden memorials in Finland to glass doghouses in South America. In the U.S., pet cemeteries are particularly abundant, reflecting a vast infrastructure of love and remembrance for pets, Koudounaris said. He shared touching and eccentric stories, such as the controversy over Rin Tin Tin's burial and the elaborate rituals some owners perform for their beloved animal companions.Koudounaris spoke about the spiritual and theological dimensions of pet death. He critiqued the historical belief that animals lack souls and celebrated concepts like the Rainbow Bridge, which provides hope of reuniting pets in the afterlife. Koudounaris tied this to the broader theme of the innocence of animals, asserting that their death feels unjust due to their purity. He also shared stories of paranormal activity linked to pet cemeteries, such as the ghost of Rudolph Valentino's dog, which continues to search for its owner.------------------------------------------Open Lines followed in the latter half of the program. Don in Alberta, Canada, discussed the impressive abilities of dogs, particularly their capacity to detect diseases, including cancer, seizures, and other conditions, often before symptoms become apparent. According to Don, different breeds have varying levels of olfactory sensitivity and he recounted examples of dogs detecting drugs, explosives, and even predators from great distances. Done advocated for the broader use of trained dogs in hospitals and medical settings, suggesting that dogs are more effective and cost-efficient than advanced medical equipment for certain diagnostic tasks.AC in Cleveland shared insights about the Pearl Harbor attack, highlighting lesser-known details. He recounted the story of an Army mobile radar unit at Kahu Point in Oahu, which detected incoming Japanese squadrons early on December 7, 1941. However, their warning to Hickam Field was dismissed, missing the opportunity to scramble planes and potentially mitigate the attack. He also noted the U.S. had broken Japanese codes months prior, which later contributed to victories like the Battle of Midway. The final half our featured a replay of the late author Hal Lindsey discussing biblical prophecy.

Once you find purpose, and once you find style… what's left? Beauty. What's left is finding and putting out beauty into the world.   There are not many writers who have genuinely figured this out … but one of them is Mitch Albom. Mitch is the author of 'Tuesdays with Morrie,' the bestselling memoir of all time, as well as 'The Five People You Meet in Heaven' and his latest bestseller 'The Little Liar' which came out in 2023 and debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. His books have sold over 40 million copies. Mitch just doesn't turn off. He's like a Tasmanian Devil. He's hosting a radio show, he's on TV, he's writing columns in the Detroit Free Press, he's a musician, he's even running an orphanage in Haiti. Mitch is full of energy and life and moves quickly and talks quickly … and so we talked about that. We go deep into why he moves through life so fast. We unpack his relationship with Morrie and talk about how I actually misinterpreted parts of the book. We talk about what the worst thing you can say to an artist is (which he learned from Maya Angelou) and what the true enemy of getting things done is (and surprise, it's not time or energy). Fly down to Detroit with me and let's take the elevator way, way up the 96-year-old Fisher Building. Let's enjoy the wise Mitch Albom sharing his 3 most formative books with us in this classic chapter. Let's flip the page to Chapter 15 now...

Going through a fertility journey, you need a great fertility doctor and…. a lawyer? Both intended parents and those helping them conceive by donating sperm, eggs, embryos or serving as surrogates need lawyers to protect their rights and support the intention behind the relationship.  James Mahan, a seasoned attorney and founder of The Surrogates Corner, brings his expertise to discuss putting your family-building intentions into a contractIn today's episode Julia speaks with James to learn all the details of current fertility law practices including how and when to seek legal support, the are current political and ethical trends impacting fertility law and how the law and your emotions intersect. This episode unpacks crucial details about contracts, surrogate rights, donor selection (both egg and sperm), and the ever-evolving legal landscape of surrogacy across different states. While challenges may arise, the fulfillment of building a family outweighs the hurdles. If this topic resonates with you or someone you know, tune in for this informative episode!   IN THIS EPISODE: [2:56] James shares how he became familiar with surrogacy and his naval background [8:04] James discusses the differences between being egg, sperm and embryo donors [12:07] Anonymous donations are not guaranteed, and the trend is moving in that direction [16:32] Contracts have changed because the entire space has changed, and James discusses various clauses intended parents and surrogates want to be included in their contracts [23:09] James discusses the under-representation of specific communities looking for donors from that community and how different states have different laws regarding surrogacy [34:19] James discusses personhood rights, abortion rights and the rights of the surrogate  [39:08] Discussion of embryo donation, storage, gifting embryos and egg-freezing exchange [45:39] Financial caps for egg donors versus sperm donors and when should a lawyer be engaged [51:42] James “undefines” family   KEY TAKEAWAYS: In the past, women who had a child through surrogacy often moved to avoid the stigma of not being able to become pregnant. Surrogacy is now an accepted way of building a family today. Anonymous donations are not practical for the child for several reasons. Emotionally, they may want to know their parentage, and knowledge is power if there is a medical situation in the future.  Each state has its laws regarding surrogacy. Some states do not allow compensated surrogacy. Get informed about your state law before deciding to become a surrogate or an intended parent in your state.   RESOURCE LINKS: Stork'd - Facebook Stork'd - Instagram Stork'd - YouTube  Surrogates Corner - Website Surrogates Corner - Instagram Surrogates Corner - LinkedIn   BIOGRAPHY: James Mahan I went to graduate school at Cambridge University and found myself boxing for the Cambridge University team. I had the fortunate experience of winning my Cambridge-Oxford bout and earned my Varsity Blue (essentially a varsity letter in the sport). My experience boxing and practicing in the ring became a metaphor for this new blog and law firm, The Surrogate's Corner.    While still on Active Duty, I was able to return to my alma mater to teach in the Economics Department. During my time teaching at the Naval Academy and throughout my three years in law school, I worked for my parents' law firm, getting to learn the ropes of the surrogacy field and Third-Party Reproduction law (TPR), which is also referred to strangely as ART law (Assisted Reproductive Technology). That became the focus of my law career. After graduating from Stanford in 2018, I earned my license in California and started taking over the day-to-day operations of the firm's ART practice.   My experience working with Surrogates has always been meaningful and insightful. I began to hear stories from Surrogates who felt like they were on their own when it came to disagreements or uncertainties regarding the legal aspects of the surrogacy process, especially so after their initial surrogacy contracts were signed. Surrogacy agencies tried to help the matches succeed but often had to be the neutral referee between the Gestational Carrier and Intended Parent(s) when things got challenging. Many attorneys working with Surrogates are only hired to review their contracts. After that, if a Surrogate has questions or issues, they can find themselves independently without legal assistance unless they are willing to pay for it themselves.

When the jury members discover who've they've selected, some try to change the result. But the decision is leaked to the press, resulting in outrage not over the selection of Khan, but over his entry, which includes a garden some think is an Islamic design to honor martyrs. A year ago, the second season of Western Edition focused on the past, present, and future of Los Angeles Chinatown. As part of that fascinating exploration, we investigated the horrific 1871 massacre of Chinese and Chinese Americans in downtown Los Angeles. In October of that year, a mixed-race mob of approximately ten percent of the resident population of Los Angeles killed 18 Chinese men and boys, or about ten percent of that ethnic and national group's population at the time.Though the event has burned in the memory of the Chinese and Chinese American community for 150 years, the rest of Los Angeles, people who live or who visit here, generally know nothing about it. But thanks to the collaborative efforts of grassroots organizations and institutions, working in concert with the city of Los Angeles, a fitting and powerful memorial to the victims of the massacre is now well underway. It made sense to us at Western Edition to add this final episode to our “Memorializing the West” season, as it offers a coda to what we've done and where we've gone this season and, we think, a bridge to last season's Chinatown investigation.Following a summer 2022 public call for ideas and a competition, artist and photographer Nicolás Leong and writer Judy Chung were selected from nearly 200 submissions and, eventually, five other finalists, all of whose thoughtful work sought to redress our city's amnesia about this event.Western Edition  host William Deverell spoke with Nicolás and Judy about their design and their process. To see images related to this episode, please visit dornsife.usc.edu/icw.Western Edition is hosted by William Deverell and produced by Avishay Artsy, Katie Dunham, Jessica Kim, Elizabeth Logan, and Stephanie Yi. Additional histories are hidden behind the laconic language etched into markers across the West. The Daughters of Utah Pioneers Marker 123 in the center of Jackson, Wyoming celebrates the arrival of Mormon families in 1889 while eliding important context, including deeper histories of settler colonialism and violence against Native peoples. Given the nation's widespread and often heated reckoning with sites of memorialization and commemoration in recent years, the new season of Western Edition – the podcast from the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West (ICW) – questions six such sites across the American West. Who put that plaque there? Who decided that a statue needed to be fixed on a plinth in that space or on that street corner? And when? Why was it worth marking or remembering? Is it still important or significant, perhaps now maybe for different reasons? Do community members, people who walk by, or those who make an effort to visit, find these places and the words written about them meaningful? Launching on May 2, 2023, Western Edition: Memorializing the West explores historical memory, commemoration, and memorialization from Catalina Island to Daly City, California; Jackson, Wyoming to Los Angeles; Denver to San Antonio.

Join family therapists and authors Ken Dolan-Del Vecchio and Nancy Saxton-Lopez as they speak with special guest Grant Hayter-Menzies. Grant has authored many books. His latest, forthcoming this year, chronicles the life of Freddie, Grant and his partner Rudi's recently deceased rescue dog. Nancy and Ken have had the privilege of corresponding with Grant for some time and reading advance copies of "Freddie, The Rescue Dog Who Rescued Me." They can't say enough good things about Grant and his writing and they're certain that you'll enjoy and find solace in what he has to say. Grant's brief bio: After a decade of writing biographies of extraordinary but unsung women active in the arts, diplomacy and politics, Grant Hayter-Menzies turned to writing about the lives of extraordinary but unsung animals: Rags, mascot and dispatch dog of the American First Division in WWI France; the thousands of elderly, neglected former war horses abandoned in Egypt by British forces at the termination of WWI and saved by Englishwoman Dorothy Brooke; Woo, the Javanese monkey companion of Canadian artist and writer Emily Carr; and Muggins, fundraising dog of WWI Victoria, BC. His memoir of his rescue dog, Freddie (ca 2009-2021), who inspired him to write about animals, comes out in fall 2023 in Canada. Grant is literary executor of playwright William Luce (1931-2019), the award-winning author of Broadway classic The Belle of Amherst. When a Russian missile recently struck a TV tower in Kyiv, near Babyn Yar, the site of Nazi mass murders during the Holocaust, some saw the attack as a potent symbol of the tragic occurrence of violence in Ukraine. To talk through the historical significance of the attack, Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien sat down with Maksym Rokmaniko, an architect, designer, entrepreneur, and director at the Center for Spatial Technologies in Kyiv, and Linda Kinstler, a PhD candidate in the rhetoric department at UC Berkeley. In her recent New York times essay, the Bloody Echoes of Babyn Yar, Linda wrote, "the current war in Ukraine is so oversaturated with historical meaning, it is unfolding on soil that has absorbed wave after wave of the dead, where soldiers do not always have to dig trenches in the forest because the old ones remain."Linda's writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Atlantic and Jewish Currents, where she recently reported on the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial center. Linda is also the author of Come to This Court and Cry: How the Holocaust Ends, which is out in the U.S. on August 23rd, from Public Affairs.Tyler, Linda and Maksym discuss the history of Babyn Yar as a sight and symbol, the role of open source investigative techniques and forensic modeling in the documentation of war crimes, the battle over historical narratives, memorialization and memory, as well as the limits of the law in achieving justice for victims of negation and genocide.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare.
