On this episode I talk to Jeff Bouwman and Jason MacKenzie, 2 amazing men that help co-host and facilitate The Dad Edge Business Accelerator. We talk about everything related to our upcoming event and why you must join us! Show Notes: www.thedadedge.com/friday68
My guest today is Jason MacKenzie, co-founder of Sacred Sons, a men's organization whose self-professed aim is to “steward the return of the father archetype through men's relational and physical training.” I first met Jason in 2019 at the Sacred Sons Convergence in San Diego, a powerful gathering of 300 other men. I experienced firsthand the container that he, alongside his core collaborators Aubert Bastiat and Adam Jackson crafted together. In our conversation today, Jason and I dive into his own experience with drug and alcohol abuse early in life. He speaks of finding his way into men's work and committing himself to the ManKind Project, before ultimately departing to follow his own path. We talk about the deep longing for elders in a largely elderless time. And finally, he speaks of his learnings from the ending of a partnership, and coming into a new relationship with his own feminine spirit. Before we begin, you might consider listening to episode #51, which is my interview with Bill Kauth, the co-founder of the ManKind Project. This sets up the lineage that connects to my conversation with Jason. You might also wish to read the essay I wrote after my participation at the Sacred Sons Convergence, titled “The Rise of the Embodied Masculine.” I've linked to it in the show notes. My guest today is Bill Kauth, the resident visionary and co-founder of The ManKind Project, one of the most recognized men's organizations in the world. In 1984, Bill was working as a psychotherapist when he conceived and co-created the New Warrior Training Adventure. Since then, over 75,000 men in 12 countries have completed this neo-initiatory experience. In 1992, Bill also authored one of the first books for starting and running effective men's groups: A Circle of Men. In our episode today, he shares about these early days of what became the mythopoetic men's movement, including reaching out to Robert Bly during the heyday of Iron John. Bill shares some of the hard lessons learned along the way, what inspires him about the current generation of men's work, and the alchemical power of holding space for men to open their hearts to each other. Also: this episode is released in tandem with my forthcoming interview with Jason MacKenzie, one of the co-founders of Sacred Sons, a more recent men's organization that grew in part from the soil of The ManKind Project. I've chosen to release both conversations in sequence, in order to offer a portrait of the similarities and differences between the generations. Support this podcast http://patreon.com/ianmack

Diego Perez is a meditator, writer, and speaker who is widely known on Instagram and various social media networks through his pen name Yung Pueblo. Online he reaches hundreds of thousands of people every month through his written works that focus on the reality of self-healing, the movement from self-love to unconditional love, and the wisdom that comes when we truly work on knowing ourselves. His first book, Inward, was self-published and quickly became a bestseller on Amazon. A revised and expanded edition of Inward has recently been published and is now available in bookstores around the world. The name Yung Pueblo means young people; it serves to remind him of his Ecuadorian roots, his experiences in activism, and that the collective of humanity is in the midst of important growth. Diego's practice of Vipassana meditation, as taught by S.N. Goenka, has given him a deeper understanding of liberation that inspires his writing. Through writing and speaking he aims to support the healing of the individual, knowing that when people release their personal burdens it helps humanity build a global peace. In this inaugural episode the Sacred Sons Triad discuss the origins of their paths to this work. Adam Jackson, Jason MacKenzie, and Aubert Bastiat also dive deep into the upcoming Convergence III retreat, where 250 men will come together in sacred brotherhood. Drawing upon ancient wisdom and modern technologies of human development, we utilize the power of ceremony, ritual, and intentional spaces to deepen into authentic brotherhood and catalyze growth in men. Through time tested frameworks and psychological processes we guide men to their emotional and spiritual edges so that every man who shows up and does the inner work will one day feel the full depth and breadth of their emotions, find and honor their purpose in life, and commit to embodying their truth. We are here to help men heal and awaken to their true power through circles, workshops, retreats, and online courses. We are Sacred Sons. We are Rising! Today I’m joined by my two facilitators for The Dad Edge Summit live event, Jason MacKenzie and Jeff Bouwman. We recorded this episode live in The Dad Edge Mastermind community. The men online were not only able to listen but also interact with us on the podcast. There are five dimensions of manhood. They are health (mental, physical, emotional, spiritual), work, our relationship with our spouse, our relationship with our children, and finances. In this live Q&A, we go through how we approached each dimension of manhood in last year’s Dad Edge Summit and how we will approach them in this year’s summit using techniques like appreciative inquiry, group exercises, and visualization. At most personal development events, we are part of an audience. We sit and listen to speakers, but The Dad Edge Summit is different. It’s active, not passive. The intimate setting allows for deep self-exploration and fosters breakthroughs that change the lives of the participants. Listen to why The Dad Edge Summit is the ultimate personal development event for dads! “IT'S AMAZING HOW FAR YOU CAN GO WHEN SOMEONE BELIEVES IN YOU”~~Jason MacKenzie Through what lens are you looking through? Some of us have had our perspectives altered throughout time, and through time the lens which we view our lives and purpose have become clouded. That which seems clear, becomes unclear. That which was once understood becomes questionable as our vision and sight towards the world strays away from that which we've imagined it to be. How do we handle life when the person we've married is not the person we've imagined them to be? How do we comprehend when the person we once loved with all our heart has chosen to leave this world at their choosing? How do we truly find ourselves when the ‘bottle' has an influence over our false perception of self control and we become one that disappoints rather than having been disappointed? There will be times when we feel small and fool ourselves to be some sort of hero. The truth is, there is always hope to create change in self to find that inner power….. And stand tall to the true warrior that exists inside!! Jason MacKenzie shares his powerful story and his inner battles as he's taken the dark times in his life to shed light upon others! In doing so, Jason is “serving powerfully” as he extends his heart and a hand to help other men battle in strengthening their own mental health. Happy fathers day all! This is an amazing episode with an honest soul. Jason & I cover a number of topics as it relates to being vulnerable, sharing with our children in the realm of drug abuse, alcohol and more. […]
Reflections on the past week, meaningful conversations I've had, a book recommendation and summary of interviews with John Spence and Jairek Robbins
Jason MacKenzie, an author, speaker & coach who teaches people how to find the courage to create new and deeper relationships with people, including their kids. And if they want to use those relationships to power personal and professional growth, he shows them how to do that too. Jason is a survivor of his first wife’s battle with bipolar disorder and subsequent suicide. He’s also overcome a decade-long battle with alcohol and eventually stopped running from grief and fear, which allowed him to become the husband and father he is today. After creating a website called "The Book of Open" to share his own gratitude journals, his efforts soon evolved into one of encouraging and empowering others to share their stories through his site. As Jason went on curating and connecting the experiences of others, the project caught the attention of Hogan Hilling, who approached him about writing a book. That turned into “The Dadly Book of Open: How Cultivating Vulnerability Makes You a Stronger, Wiser & More Courageous Father.” Some of the key things to listen for include: 1. Growing Together – We discuss this at a few different points in the conversation, related not just to parents with their kids, but with their parents as well. As the generations turn and learn, we are all growing together. 2. You will know when it is time for you to know - His description of the peace and the clarity of the moment when he knew he was done drinking is a great example of how, with any large, looming issue in your life that you’re not sure how to handle, you will know when it’s time. You’ll just know. And when that time arrives, you’ll know it. 3. The power of vulnerability - Authentically sharing our true selves with others almost never pushes others away. It has the reverse effect: it almost always brings us closer together. When someone else shares and listens with authenticity, non-judgement and kindness, there is no greater way to deepen or create a connection with another human being. Jason has discovered this and you’ll clearly hear that in this discussion. 4. Perseverance - He does a terrific job of describing the process of actually creating the book and what it took. Listen to that carefully because it's an important lesson for just about anything that you do in life ©2017 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises

Jason Mackenzie – Diversity Dad show notes Today we will have the chance to share a bit of the incredible life story of Jason MacKenzie, father of two daughters, husband, writer, life coach and the guy behind thebookofopen.com. “In my first marriage my wife, and the biological mother of our children, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder which is a mental illness that causes pretty radical and dangerous behaviour in deep and oftentimes suicidal depressions and just a very wide ranging spectrum of behaviour and it is all painful and destructive and it is really a horrible thing to witness somebody you love going through or anybody going through.” When we think about struggle and how to overcome it as a family we know we can have on Jason an example, and a good one, on how to deal it. It wasn’t easy for him and it took a great deal of effort and failed attempts but he fought, he learnt and he became a better man, a better father and now he knows how to succeed in life together with his family. “I really didn’t have many tools to cope with the incredible emotional trauma of what was happening to me and I started drinking very heavily and it was because I couldn’t cope with the feelings I was having. So I tried to drown them basically in alcohol.” Besides going through a very bad time with his first wife he also had to deal with his alcohol addiction, which he fought and won through an amazing story that every son, daughter, father and mother should listen to at least once. “It really took me a long time, it took me 4 years after my first wife’s death to stop drinking and it is amazing how that happened. I had promised my daughter, Melody, who was 9 at the time that we were going to have a special day together and I really hyped it up, that it was going to be great and the whole thing. You know when the day rolled around I did what I so often did, I waited for the clock to strike 11 o’clock, I went to the pub, I took her with me, had a few beers there, went to the liqueur store, came home and drank the day away. Did nothing special with her and when my wife came home she talked to her and Melody came up and looked me in the eye and told me she was disappointed.” Coming from his own experience and amazing story, a great example of how powerful your relationship with your kids and close family can be, he learnt to overcome the problems and we are sure many of the Diversity Dads out there can also learn and will certainly feel inspired by his story. “I had this incredible moment of clarity and I just knew I was done drinking. And the reason is I allowed myself to be vulnerable enough with myself to take a fearless inventory of myself. And I was able to say for the first time without judgment that “I am 41 years old, I drink every day. I am causing my wife, this incredible woman who has come into our life and helped rebuild our family, I am causing her no end of worrying and concern and now my kids are telling me they are disappointed at me. I want something different.” and that was the first time I was ever able to just say that to myself. The truth, without judgment. And it freed me. It just freed me to create something different.” “It is more than father to daughter or father to son. It is human being to human being. When our kids know that we feel what they feel they will come to us when they feel those emotions too. It is the simplest and the most profound way to form a unbreakable connection with our kids.” It is not all bad experiences and overcoming our problems and addictions though. We will see just how much Jason was able to take out from his relationship with his daughters and how many amazing things he has to say. We hope you take as much wisdom, knowledge and have such a great time listening to his story and to what he has to say as we did! OTHER QUOTES: “What we typically do is, we are told whether it is on our personal lives or professional lives too, the path to improvement is through solving problems. In other words, we find what is not working about us and we fix it and then by doing so we automatically get better. The problem is what we focus on grows.” “So, appreciative enquiry is a method of really helping people understand what energizes them and gives them life and what is already working in their lives.” “Let’s say your child comes home from school and they get a specific mark on a test. So they get a 85% on the test. There’s two ways to handle that. One way is to say “Oh, good job. What did you get wrong?”. And then, maybe an approach would be “okay, to not get those questions wrong in the future you should study more.” That’s a pretty standard response. But another approach, and the appreciative enquiry approach would say “let’s understand by asking questions, what worked for you to get an 85% and then how do we do more of that?” so maybe it was “how did I as a parent support you in getting that mark?” and what you might find out is that you didn’t give me chores three days before the test, you created a space for me to thrive, you committed to me that if I ever had a question for you, you would be willing to stop what you were doing and answer. (…) You are taking what is already working and just finding ways to do more of that to perform at a higher level.” “During that time I had a very narrow definition of what it meant to be a strong man and father. That definition was strength is logic and strength is using the power of my mind and the power of my will to influence events. But I thought emotions were weakness because they are irrational and I just thought weak people let themselves get bogged down or hampered by their emotions.” “We all experience every human emotion. Whether we choose to admit it or not is another matter. But every single one of us feels anxiety, fear, discomfort, grief when something tragic happens and we also feel joy, passion, gratitude and hope.” “I am seeing the woman that they are going to become. I can see how they are interacting with the world and I can see how they have such a high level of awareness. Of their place in the world, the power their choices have to create their world and the impact that their thoughts, and words and actions have on other people. I compare it to myself at their age. I was sticking Lego up my nose at eleven years old.” “I was driving her to figure skating and I just pulled the car over and I just said “I don’t really think you probably remember this moment; I am sure you don’t.” And I walked through that, I sort of recounted or relived that moment when she told me she was disappointed at me. I just thank her for having the courage to be honest and telling me how she felt. Because her having the courage to be honest with me gave me the courage to finally be honest with myself.” “After I told her that we had that conversation she looked at me and said “Daddy, you always made me feel really special”. That moment was, I don’t know if magical is the right word. It was just so powerful.” “My biggest obstacle, as far as a specific moment, was sitting them down and telling them that their mother was dead. That was a very very hard thing to do obviously.” “We as parents think we are supposed to know everything. And we don’t know everything and our kids know that we don’t know everything. When we pretend that we know everything our kids think that everything we say is suspect.” LINKS: THE BOOK OF OPEN WEBSITE http://thebookofopen.com/ Twitter - @TheBookOfOpen https://twitter.com/thebookofopen INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/thebookofopen/ RESOURCES: jason (at) thebookofopen (dot) com “Let’s learn together. As men we often fear being vulnerable. But it turns out that opening ourselves up can become our biggest strength. Especially with our children. In this episode Jason MacKenzie shares with us how this can be a powerful way to connect deeply with our kids. In his book The Dadly
Being vulnerable is probably one of the hardest things you will ever do. But if you can create that safe space for vulnerability, you and those around you will be more comfortable revealing their own fears and anxieties. In this episode of One Year No Beer, Andy sits down with Jason MacKenzie. Jason is the author and creator of The Book of Open. His book touches on how to create vulnerable spaces between yourself and your family in order to overcome life’s adversities. What began as a journal transformed into an interactive website and a book, which is how Jason connects with others and their families and helps them process their own hardships. “Every single decision I make alters the trajectory of my life.” Like most of us, Jason was a party boy in his twenties. His relationship with alcohol was one of late nights and binge drinking. But when his late wife was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and later committed suicide, alcohol became his crutch. Rather than process his emotions, Jason created a stereotype of a “man’s man” and drowned his mourning in alcohol. Unfortunately, these actions had negative effects on his other relationships, including the one with his two young children. But Jason woke up one morning at 2am with a revelation. He hated what he was doing and what it was doing to himself and his family. “When you’re pushed to the limit,” he says, “you’re going to do things. And you can judge yourself for it or…you can learn from it.” Moving forward meant forgiving himself and accepting his emotions. You can’t avoid what you’re feeling, and it’s not fair to yourself or the people around you to stay closed off. When you ask for help, people will come out of the woodwork to help you, you just have to be brave enough to ask. Accepting responsibility. Once he accepted his own flaws, Jason realized he owed something to the rest of us. If he was afraid to ask for help, how many people out there are still suffering? “I recognized that I could have a meaningful impact and make a positive contribution to the world,” Jason says of his empowering book The Book of Open. His book creates a safe space for men and women to be vulnerable. He encourages shifts in thinking that focus on the positive and offers advice in order to help people process the less-than-stellar emotions and aspects of life. My guest today on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots entrepreneur podcast interview is a man who has had quite a varied career since starting as a Solutions Specialist for Accenture, before transitioning into a Senior Software Developer a role he fulfilled for over six years. And it seems to me that he has spent the bulk of his time developing the skills to implement and develop IT systems and platforms, where actually he had a burning desire to develop humans. And this is the fascinating part of life, and something I talk about often. That when transitioning to a new life, most of us try to escape for the old one. But actually most of it isnt too bad, just some of it doesn't fulfill us, or make us believe that we are getting what we should. But we have skills within those old lives that we can and should be taking with us, to make it easier in the future. And that is what our guest has done today, as since 2014 he has worked tirelessly to help the world live better lives and develop systems that can make us all dream bigger. But don't think for a minute that this is a guy who talks the talk, but doesn't have the experience to say "Hey, I've been though some pretty tough times myself, have I told you about overcoming alcohol abuse and the story of my wife's tragic suicide due to bipolar disorder." So how has he taken this career history and turned it into something profitable, enjoyable and valuable to the world? And does he feel that we are always on the right path, it just sometimes takes awhile to see how the dots are all joining up ? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Jason MacKenzie.
Jason MacKenzie has overcome a hardship that most of us would think impossible to overcome. His human reaction to a devastating event left him lost in a haze of guilt, shame and alcoholism. He used physical fitness as a type of retribution for his dirty deeds and his wife’s suicide as the rationale for letting himself fall apart. It wasn’t until he embraced his vulnerable side that he was able to break free of his addiction and start his spiritual journey. His upcoming world-changing book is for Dads who need to cultivate vulnerability in their lives. Key Takeaways: [7:19] Jason dealt with the inconsolable mental anguish which was his late wife’s bipolar disorder. [14:50] Sharing stories about bipolar disorder encourages other people to share their stories, helping to lift their burden. [18:45] Imagine telling two little girls their mommy went to heaven after their Mommy committed suicide. [24:39] People will rationalize their drinking problem to themselves and those who love them until the breaking point occurs. [31:55] Two views of a disorder - How the spouse of an affected person copes and how a person who is struggling copes. [37:19] Physical fitness was Jason’s anchor during tumultuous times and mental fitness is what got him ripped. [42:13] It’s not about crunches. It’s about being worthy of being better. [47:18] Contact information and what to expect from Jason’s book. [49:10] The Lightening Round - Getting mileage out of crapping your pants. Hey guys for this week’s “Five Minute Thursday” I wanted to highlight a few takeaways from our interview with Jason Mackenzie, founder of the The Book of Open. Empowerment through Vulnerability For most men, we associate vulnerability with weakness. To be honest, even hearing the word “vulnerable” my first thought is “unwanted exposure to weakness.” However, vulnerability is a strength. Vulnerability is empowerment through authenticity, which is being true to one’s self. I have been working with men/fathers for the past three years, and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that if men are going to be “vulnerable” with each other, it has to be in an atmosphere or situation where it “cool thing.” I can tell you from experience that men will check out when you start talking about sensitive stuff like “let’s share our feelings.” Men simply don’t respond to that when in the presence of another man. In fact, it’s even hard for us to do this with our wives for the most part. However, men are good at one thing…problem solving. We love to problem solve. We feel empowered when we share our wisdom and give advice. To be honest, being vulnerable is sharing a struggle or an obstacle and simply asking for input. The way to kick start a “cool atmosphere” of vulnerability is to ask for advice from a friend. Here’s an example that will really hit this home…If you are sitting across that table with a friend and he says: “Hey Mike, I am struggling in my marriage and I need to share my feelings with you about it.” OR “Hey Mike…man…so check this out, Jen and I are having some tough times lately. There is a ton of tension between Jen and me. I can’t really figure out how to get things back in the groove. Have you and Becky been through this? If so, how can you help me out man?” Which one of those sounds better and would be received better? It’s the same dilemma and situation…just teed up better. Abundance versus Scarcity Jason hit upon a great topic that is powerful for all of us and that is having the right mentality. Our brains are wired up to default to fear and keep us from danger. This part of our brain is the amygdala and it has been a part of our hardwired DNA since the beginning. This is the part of our brain where we hear the voice of fear and consequences. It’s the same part of your brain that will talk you out of risks and tells you are not good enough. It’s not our fault; it’s just part of our hardwiring. It takes a trained and disciplined mind to look at our lives with abundance vs. scarcity. Successful people don’t think about what they are going to lose by taking a calculated risk. Successful people consider what they will lose if they don’t take a calculated risk and move forward. So, the next time that fear voice starts to bend your ear, remember the words of wisdom from Jason Mackenzie on this subject. It’s all about perspective and reframing. No One Relates to Perfection I grew up in the 80’s and I was a die-hard WWF professional wrestling fan. Hulk Hogan, Rick Flair, Jimmy Superfly, and so-on were my heroes. The most hated guys in that sport at that time was “Mr. Perfect and Mr. Wonderful.” Want to know why? It’s because no one can relate to inflated egos and perfection. People relate to real-life authenticity and transparency. Our greatest human need is the need for community and relationships. It’s impossible for us to relate to others that view themselves as superhuman or “perfect.” The big lesson here is there is connection and empowerment through being authentic, vulnerable, and transparent. People relate to us better in that mindset and we are more willing to accept ourselves. Guys, thanks for checking out this week’s “Five Minute Thursday.” See you next week and have an awesome weekend!

The life that Jason Mackenzie had longed for was ripped out from underneath him when the mother of his daughters was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. After years of trying to hide the pain of watching his wife literally fall apart before him, Jason had to face the reality that his dream life was gone. His wife committed suicide and left him to raise their two daughters on his own. To deal with the pain of his wife’s condition, Jason turned to drinking.

I recently had the honor of interviewing Jack Canfield one-on-one for an hour. I have to tell you it was one the most inspiring interviews I have done to date. For those of you who don’t know Jack Canfield, he is one of the most successful authors and success coaches of our time. He known world-wide for his Chicken Soup for the Soul Series and his Success Principles Series. His books have reached the lives of over 100 million readers and his inspiration is reaching more people every day. Before I did this interview, I only knew Jack Canfield as the successful person he is today. I have often heard the quote: “When you see a successful person, we usually only see the tip of the iceberg. We usually don’t see all the hardships, failures, and challenges these people have gone through in their lives to get where they are today.” After spending an hour with Jack, I can tell you I was shocked to hear about his challenging childhood with alcoholic parents, the number of times he was rejected for “Chicken Soup for the Soul” (144 rejections), and that he earned a C+ in writing at Harvard. Below are just few takeaways I learned from spending just 60 minutes with Jack Canfield DON'T LET YOUR CHILDHOOD CRIPPLE YOU Jack had a very difficult childhood raised by a father who was an alcoholic. The cool thing about Jack Canfield is that he used his childhood as an example of what he didn't want to be as an adult. The main point is we have people in or society that live in two camps. Camp #1- Those of us who leverage challenging times to fuel our future success. Camp #2- Those of us who use our backgrounds for excuses as to why we are not successful and never will be. So my question to you guys is: “WHAT CAMP DO YOU LIVE IN?” If you are in camp #2: Congrats because you have made an awesome choice on the path to an empowering life versus a victim mentality life. If you are in camp #1: it’s time to re-evaluate your life and ask yourself better questions. If you are in camp one...go back and listen to Episode 28 with Navy Seal Commander Mark Divine on HOW TO CREATE AN UNBEATABLE MIND. That episode will give you a solid foundation on how to forge mental toughness and become resilient. DON'T LET YOUR GRADES DICTATE YOUR SUCCESS IN LIFE Jack got a “C+” in writing at Harvard and was always told he was an "average writer.” Jack is now one of the most successful authors of our time. Had he listened to his professors at Harvard and didn't move forward with his passion to tell stories, our generation would not know the Jack Canfield we know today and he would have never had such a positive impact on the world. S So, my question to you is: “WHAT HAVE OTHER PEOPLE TOLD YOU ABOUT YOUR SKILL OR PASSION THAT YOU HAVE BOUGHT INTO?” What if for a minute you no longer bought into those labels? What if you decided to step into your greatness? What would be the worst that could happen? I grantee 2 things are certain: If you failed you would be no worse off than you are right now. If you decided to pursue your dream, whether you failed or succeeded, you would not live a life of "I wish". Pay Flynn has a great quote that really hits this home which is..."I would rather have a life of "oh-wells and not a life of I wish I would haves.” DON'T LET FAILURE STOP YOU Jack was rejected by 144 publishers for his first “Chicken Soup for the Soul” Book. Let that sink in for a second...144 rejections. How would you feel about your purpose/passion if you were rejected 5 times, 10 times, 50 times, or even 100 times? What if Jack Would have thrown in the towel at the 143rd rejection? The cool thing that Jack Canfield mentioned is that he would have self-published no matter what. It's empowering to have a backup plan and know you will move forward even if it's on your own when no one else believes in you. The lesson here is to fail forward and not give up. Each time we fail there is a life lesson, we learn, and we move forward. Guys, thank you for tuning in to our new segment - Five Minute Thursday's. Jason Mackenzie the father of 2 beautiful girls. His first wife committed suicide after a tragic struggle with bipolar disorder. Jason drank a hell of a lot for a long time and did all the stupid stuff that drunks do. Puked all over. Pissed all over. He drove drunk, said stupid things and thought he was smart while I was saying them. He felt guilty & felt like shit. He made choices that destroyed his ability to reach my potential. Then he made them again. And again. Done with all that now, Jason has started a completely new journey. He believes with all his heart that sharing it with you will help you.
