Kevin Maguire, author of The New Fatherhood, about what is shifting inside modern fatherhood and why so many men are trying to parent differently than they were parented themselves. Did you know that dads can experience postpartum depression too? We talk about the move from "protect, provide, preside" to something more emotionally present and engaged, and what it actually takes to stay connected when things feel overwhelming. We explore anger and emotional regulation, the challenge many fathers experience around vulnerability and play, and the identity shift that happens when a man becomes a parent. Today Patty interviews author and former sports broadcaster Peter Young about his memoir, Stop the Tall Man, Save the Tiger, detailing how he married into a small, hidden cult led by “Uncle Robert” (Robert Booty). Over two decades, Robert used secrecy, isolation, and spiritual manipulation—claiming to be a gatekeeper to salvation—to control Paige, her parents, and eventually Peter, fueling parental alienation and a divorce in which Peter was portrayed as “the devil.” Peter describes how family support, faith, and a court-appointed guardian's report identifying severe parental alienation and cult influence helped expose the abuse, leading to the three youngest children returning to live with him. He shares key lessons: keep Christ at the center of marriage, maintain strong fellowship and communication, and remember salvation precedes sanctification, plus warning signs of cult leaders. Peter also talks about his basketball-themed novels The Blue Team and Wardrobe of the Wolf, with East of Ashton forthcoming.website: www.authorpeteryoung.comFacebook page: Author Peter YoungInstagram: peterbyoungEpisode Highlights:00:00 Meet Peter Young02:21 How He Married In04:53 Red Flags After 9 1106:37 Gatekeeper To Salvation09:19 Isolation And Secrecy11:31 What The Cult Leader Wanted13:56 Legacy And Surrogacy15:20 Divorce And Rock Bottom17:09 First Steps Toward Clarity18:18 Breaking Free and Reaching Out18:56 Robert Rewrites the Marriage20:24 Kids Turned Against Dad21:27 Guardian Ad Litem Turning Point23:30 Shunning Rebecca the Warning Sign24:41 Single Dad and Hope for Healing26:51 Book Lessons and Cult Red Flags30:23 Other Books and Where to Buy31:46 Rapid Fire Q and Closing34:51 Host Wrap Up and Next Season

Faith, Fatherhood, and Leading at Home with Intention In one of the most heartfelt episodes we've ever recorded, Chris and Melissa sit down with Bubba Page — a single dad of eight, serial entrepreneur, and unapologetic follower of Jesus — to explore what it really means to lead your family with faith, intentionality, and purpose. Bubba's story is raw, real, and deeply inspiring. From building and selling companies to walking through heartbreak and healing, he's discovered that success means nothing without faith and family at the center. He shares how his relationship with God transformed after a season of humility and loss, and how daily spiritual practices — from prayer and scripture study to worship and journaling — helped him discover God's will for his life. This conversation goes far beyond business. Bubba opens up about spiritual warfare, discerning the “three voices” we all hear, and how to cultivate strength and clarity to follow God's plan. He also shares how we can turn our deepest trials into the very source of our light — a message every parent and leader needs to hear. As a father, Bubba's mission is crystal clear: to raise warriors for Christ and equip parents with practical tools to lead their homes. He's now building the Fatherhood Movement and writing The Father Operating System, a guide that applies business principles — like KPIs, meetings, and mission statements — to family life. The goal? More intention, more connection, and more joy. If you've ever wondered how to bring more purpose, structure, and spiritual depth into your home, this episode will leave you inspired, challenged, and ready to step into your calling as a parent and leader. Single Dad Doesn't Like His Daughter's Outfits On Reddit, Clayton writes: As a single father of a teenage daughter, I'm having an issue concerning her fashion choices. She's taken to doing clothing exchanges with her friends, and it's a problem for two reasons. First, the clothes I've bought for her weren't exactly cheap, and I have an issue with them just being given away to friends who might now ever give them back. Second, her friends are far more “adventurous” with their wardrobes, and my daughter and have had serious blow outs over it not being appropriate for her show that much of her body off while out and about. I'm tired of fighting about it, and I know that I'm the dad, but I also fully realize that what she wears when she leaves the house could be way different when she goes to someone else's house and changes. How do I deal with this?Lose Weight While SleepingGoing to bed early leads to less snacking - In one study, nighttime eaters consumed around 15% of their daily calories - an average of 690 calories. It helps balance hormones and supports circadian rhythm - not getting enough sleep causes the body to release more of the hunger hormone ghrelin. It supports healthy metabolism - If the body is up late trying to digest food when it should be resting, it leads to being tired the next day and then the body craves carbs. You'll make healthier decisions the next day - Research shows that sleep deprivation leads to consuming more calories the next day.Half Of Gen Z Has Already Dipped Into Their Retirement46% of Gen Zers have withdrawn funds from their retirement accounts. 42% of Gen Z withdrawals went to paying off debt. Gen Z workers were the most likely generation to raid their retirement accounts, but they weren't the only generation that is doing so. About one in three workers across all generations said they plan to withdraw funds from their retirement accounts in the next year. Why? To cover emergencies or everyday expenses.Second Date UpdateAdrian was excited to talk about Brooke. They met through mutual friends (it was a small get-together) and agreed to meet up for Hawaiian food in San Carlos. They laughed all through dinner and just seemed to click. Adrian said the chemistry was undeniable, and he wanted to go all out to impress her. That's why he surprised her with a helicopter ride afterward. In his mind, it was spontaneous, romantic, and unforgettable. He couldn't believe she ghosted after such a magical night.

When we talk about households led by single parents, we often think about mothers. But a rising number of families are led by single fathers: men who are parenting alone by choice – whether through adoption or surrogacy – or because of divorce, separation or widowhood. Single dads often have the same challenges as single mothers because the economics and emotional work of parenting solo are not always easy. Yet, single fathers also report being lonelier and less sure of how to access support than mothers. We'll look at the experience of single fatherhood and hear from you: are you a single dad or were you raised by one? What's your story? Guests: Faith Hill, staff writer, The Atlantic - Hill's most recent article is titled "The Growing Cohort of Single Dads by Choice" Ignacio Ferrey, director, Fatherhood and Adolescent Services, Alameda County Public Health Department Ron Poole-Dayan, executive director and founder, Men Having Babies - a nonprofit organization that offers guidance and financial assistance for gay men who want to become fathers through surrogacy Darby Saxbe, associate professor of psychology, USC - director, USC Center for the Changing Family Dr. Ken Epstein, therapist and social worker; from 2012-2018, Epstein was the director of the Children Youth and Family System of Care for San Francisco's Behavioral Health Services Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Peter Shankman, entrepreneur, speaker, best-selling author, and founder of Source of Sources. A Jewish single dad, Shankman became an amateur chef, because he loves cooking with his 12-year-old daughter. “I used to think [cooking] was just about creating food that I enjoyed, and then I had a kid and I realized the bar is actually not so much food you enjoy, but food they'll enjoy,” explains Shankman, who was born, raised, and lives in New York. “To create a meal that she actually likes and that we sit and eat together after having cooked together is a lot of fun.” Shankman said his interest in cooking happened both after becoming a parent and also after really understanding his ADHD. “When you're ADHD it's much easier to order takeout and to have food delivered,” he says. “You want to set good habits for your kids … so you learn that maybe ordering in every night is not the best way to do things.” Shankman says that having ADHD gives him a more experimental mindset, when it comes to cooking. He'll be at the store, spot an ingredient and start thinking about different things he can make with it. “You get to create these ideas [for meals], and if they work great, if they don't, life goes on,” he explains. “But either way, it's a lot of fun.” Peter Shankman talks about some of his favorite single Dad cooking recommendations (“one day a week should be a cheat or comfort food”) and recipes, including his easy crockpot chicken, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. He also shares anecdotes, including ones with his daughter, his grandmother, and how competing as an ironman triathlete led to joining an Orthodox Jewish swimming club, complete with tailgate breakfast.
