Iolaire Disaster Centenary Service held at Bragar Meeting House and West Side War Memorial

For the latest podcast Ali met up with poet and writer Donald S. Murray to talk about this novel As The Women Lay Dreaming which examines the Iolaire disaster of 1919 and why the story of one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters remains largely unknown outside of the Highlands & Islands. The two discuss the impact this terrible event has had on a community through the generations, and also the main themes of the novel which include language, religion, class, art, guilt, and family. It's an utterly fascinating conversation about one of Scotland's defining moments in history. With the centenary of the sinking of the Iolaire imminent this is a podcast you won't want to miss.

A run-through of Donald MacLeod's "Lament for the Iolaire." This was a tune written to lament a ship returning from from WWI whose sinking on January 1st, 1919 in the Minch was one of the worst maritime disasters in United Kingdom history. At least 205 men perished of the 280 aboard.

#172. I’ve called a lot of people ‘legendary’ on the podcast, but Don Street truly fits the bill. Now deep into his 80s, he’s seen & done it all. He’s been instrumental in creating modern cruising as we know it. Street pioneered cruising the Caribbean on his engineless yawl Iolaire, and to this day continues updating charts of the region. He helped design the Caribbean’s first charter yacht, the CSY 44 and was ousted from Grenada during the US invasion. And the list goes on. #7. The LEGENDARY Donald Street in person! I first met Don at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in 2010 when Mia and I had Arcturus on display with Colligo Marine. Don gave me some pointers on the yawl rig, and we hit it off right from the start. He's been the biggest influence on my sailing life since I started reading his books as a kid. Don and I sat down in the small apartment above the Weems & Plath shop in Eastport last week and chatted for almost an hour and a half about his sailing history, his chartwork, his philosophies and everything else he wanted to talk about. And the man can talk! He's in his mid-eighties, but still has the energy of a 20-year-old and is still out there speaking, writing guidebooks and sailing his Dragon in Ireland.
