Physician Tina Stankovic is an ear, nose, and throat specialist and a lover of music whose seemingly disparate pursuits — medicine and music — have led her to a groundbreaking career in hearing research. She recently worked with music legend Paul Simon during his well-publicized battle with hearing loss and he has become a vocal advocate for hearing research. New understandings and new approaches like regenerative medicine have put the once-impossible dream of hearing restoration within reach, Stankovic tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? In this podcast, I'm going to share a natural remedy for vertigo. Surgery, along with vertigo exercises, are sometimes suggested as treatment for vertigo, but this doesn't address the root cause. Vertigo is typically caused by calcium crystals in the wrong part of the ear. These inner ear crystals interrupt communication between the hairs and nerves in the ear and the brain. This can drastically affect balance. It's normal to have inner ear crystals, but if they're in the wrong place, they can cause vertigo. In the first compartment of the inner ear, calcium crystals are situated on top of the otolithic membrane. Underneath are hairs connected to nerves that go to your brain. Calcium crystals add weight to this “gel” membrane to help you easily navigate the world around you. Most people have around 1000 calcium crystals per ear. These inner ear crystals are only problematic when they become dislodged and go deeper into the ear. This can be caused by head trauma, infections, certain medications, and aging. People with vertigo have higher calcium concentrations in the lymph, so they may have more trouble dissolving it. There's a high association of people with osteoporosis and vertigo. People with osteoporosis have excess calcium in the soft tissues. Vitamin D may help with vertigo by helping your body remove excess calcium and putting it where it belongs. Consider taking between 10,000 and 20,000 IU of vitamin D3. Make sure to take it with vitamin K2 and magnesium. Magnesium naturally counters calcium buildup. In this episode I lay how what Showmanship is, as I see it. If we are to work out what the origins of something is, particularly if the origins lay deep in prehistory, then chances are there has been a great deal of change to the thing. Sometimes so much that it is hard to recognice it. SO, to be able to know what the origins are we must know what the relevant and unchanging elements of the evolving thing we seek to understand. Last episode I talked about the evolutionary history of the whale and how one of the key elements that's used to trace its transformation from land animal to sea animal is some bones in its inner ear. In this episode I describe a Show as related to Henri Corbin's Imaginal Realm. And I make the claim that what a Show is, which is a different level of reality, other than normal life, where ordinary objects and words and images become symbolic and poetic and filled with meaning. It is a purely human kind of relation and a uniquely human experience. So, this realm of experience we call show, is the thing we will use as our lodestone to keep us on track as we venture back into prehistory.links:Henri Corbin and the Imaginal Realmthe Cabaret sensation and huge part of my life: La Soiree & La CliqueSupport the show...Now you can get t-shirts and hoodies with our wonderful logo. Welcome back to "From Our Neurons to Yours," a podcast where we criss-cross scientific disciplines to take you to the frontiers of brain science. This week, we explore the science of dizziness with Stanford Medicine neurologist Kristen Steenerson, MD, who treats patients experiencing vertigo and balance disorders. In our conversation, we'll see that dizziness is not a singular experience but rather a broad term encompassing a variety of different sensations of disorientation. We learn about the vestibular system, a set of biological "accelerometers" located deep within the inner ear that detect linear and angular acceleration, helping us perceive motion, orientation, and our connection to the world around us. We also discuss a wearable medical device Dr. Steenerson and colleagues at the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute are developing a wearable device to measure the activity of the vestibular system by tracking a patient's eye movements. With the ability to study this mysterious system in unprecedented detail, we're on the verge of learning more than ever about this misunderstood "sixth sense."Learn MoreDr. Steenerson's Stanford academic profileDr. Steenerson's Stanford Healthcare profile (Neurology and Neurological Sciences, Otolaryngology)The wearable ENG, a dizzy attack event monitor (DizzyDx)ReferencesPopkirov, Stoyan, Jeffrey P.
