Greetings to the cowboys, the snakes, and the kin among us. Tonight we have a real southern tale to tell. Somewhere out past the cat's whiskers and royal palm, where the air hangs heavy with history, there's a sound—low, humming, ancient. Maybe it's a siren calling from a forgotten Southern shore, or the echo of Datura blooming under an October moon. Or maybe—just maybe—it's the land calling back.Tonight, we're following that sound through Tori Amos' most Southern-infused songs—the ones laced with heat, history, and a little bit of blood memory. Now, let's put our alligator boots in the dirt. Yes, Tori was born in North Carolina, but she grew up in Maryland—Southern enough if you're feeling generous, but let's be honest, it's not exactly Dixie. Still, this lizard woman knows the South. The places where time bends a little differently. Her Cherokee blood runs deep, and her family's history is carved into the land like a story waiting to be sung. And yes, the song lines, they do indeed sing.Whether she's summoning the turquoise serpents, calling out to the Merman in a rising tide, we're mapping out a Tori playlist where the South isn't just a place—it's a feeling. And if we get lost along the way, well… we'll just drive all night until we find our way back.So let's go to her Southern land of gold. Just go. Tonight we are Introverted but willing to mess with a southern girl.Playlists:JVKKMM

It's finally here! With The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep now streaming on Netflix, we're setting sail with Geralt and Jaskier as we unpack their newest animated movie. Over a bottle of Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon, we search for pearls of the verbal variety while tackling all the tough questions. What do we think of the added events and changed ending? Why is there a random musical number? And how exactly do a mermaid and human do the deed, anyhow? Plus, we introduce two all-new segments, weigh in on the short story that inspired the film and explain why a celebrated fantasy author really needs to walk the plank. It's an episode that's guaranteed to get you just as animated as Geralt, so make a little—okay, moderately-sized sacrifice of your time and give it a listen.

This is episode is part of my Folklore Friday series where I am sharing a Folklore story every Friday in 2024. To hear other stories, I have shared so far, check them out on my website All Things Iceland. How an Icelandic Fisherman Caught a Merman Many years ago, there was a farmer living in Vogar, famous for being the best fisherman around. No one could match his skill, and his farm flourished because of it. One day, while he was out on the water, something strange happened. He cast his line into the sea like usual, but when he tried to reel it in, it felt impossibly heavy, as if he had snagged a massive catch. To his surprise, when he finally pulled it up, it wasn't just a fish—he'd caught a strange creature with the body of a man!Startled, the fisherman blurted out, “What in the world are you?”The creature responded calmly, “I am a merman from the deep sea.”Curious, the farmer asked, “What were you doing when my hook got you?”The merman replied, “I was adjusting the chimney cowl on my mother's house to make it face the wind. Now, let me go!”But the farmer wasn't ready to release him just yet. “Not so fast,” he said. “You'll have to serve me for a bit first.”Without further discussion, the fisherman dragged the merman into his boat and rowed back to shore. The Merman Notices Some Interesting Things About the Fisherman When they reached land, the fisherman's loyal dog ran up to greet him, barking happily and wagging its tail. But in a foul mood, the farmer struck the dog for being too excited. At this, the merman chuckled softly but didn't explain why.As the fisherman headed toward his house, pulling the merman behind him, he stumbled over a small hill. Annoyed, he cursed at it. The merman laughed again, louder this time. Finally, when they arrived at the house, the fisherman's wife rushed out to greet him, wrapping her arms around him affectionately. Pleased with her welcome, he smiled—only to hear the merman laugh a third time. The farmer, now curious, asked, “You've laughed three times. Why?”“I'll only tell you,” said the merman, “if you promise to take me back to the sea and let me go.”The fisherman agreed, eager to hear the reasons. The merman began, “I laughed the first time when you hit your dog, who was only showing you honest joy. The second time, I laughed because you cursed the hill—yet beneath it lies a fortune in gold. The third time, I laughed because your wife's embrace, though it pleased you, was hollow. She is unfaithful to you.”Shocked, the farmer said, “I'll believe you if I find gold in that hill. The rest, we'll see.” The Fisherman is Shocked at What He Found He immediately went to the hill and dug it up. Sure enough, he found a treasure of golden coins buried there, just as the merman had said.Keeping his word, the farmer took the merman back to the sea. Before diving back into the depths, the merman said, “You've kept your promise, so I will reward you. Soon, you will come across something valuable. Be ready to claim it.”Not long after, seven sea-grey cows appeared on the beach near the farmer's land. They were wild and untamable, but the farmer noticed something unusual—they each had a small bladder attached to their noses. Remembering the merman's words, the farmer chased after them, managing to burst the bladder on one of the cows. Immediately, the cow became calm, allowing the farmer to lead her home. The rest of the cows fled back into the sea. That one grey cow turned out to be an incredible gift, giving more milk than any other cow in the land. She became the ancestor of a prized breed of grey cows, famous throughout Iceland. The farmer grew rich and lived a prosperous life, but he never caught another merman. And as for his wife, well, nothing more was said about her after that, so we can only guess how that part of the story ended. Random Fact of the Episode Stories of Mermen often depict them as being very ugly with hands and feet.

Merman wants to go with the wind. Merman wants adventure. Merman needs friends? In the future, the world has become, sigh, a water world. Mariner (Kevin Coster) loves yacht rock and boating. When he's not exploring the ocean's depths, he dabbles in herbology. He's just minding his own business when everyone gets into a liquid fuss. Helen's (Jeanne Tripplehorn) daughter has a tattoo map on her back, and it leads to dry land. Land seems cool. Deacon (Dennis Hopper) and his gang-o-dudes (Smokers) want that map because dry land promises have been made. Needless to say, this does not go well for Mariner's rad future boat. RTS explores underwater mysteries and fights off sea monsters. Jeremy, Collin and La-Mar make sure to take down a few hordes of Smokers and enjoy a lime or two. It gets strange on the open ocean. Real strange! Take a ride in an upgradable aircraft and decide if this water adventure is for you. Adieu, summer!

What do you wish I asked this guest? What was your "quotable moment" from this episode? When the whispering waves meet the whispers of the past, Merman Zee from the Wanted Depths graces us with tales of his life entwined with the mysteries of witchcraft and the sea. We're swept away on an adventure that reveals Zee's personal evolution through a decade of spiritual exploration, touching on themes of dream work, inclusivity, and the potent storytelling that fuels change. With a voice as calming as the ocean's embrace, Zee recounts his discovery of witchcraft and the continuous growth from nurturing wisdom and understanding, reminding us all of our own capacity for transformation. As the current carries us deeper, we confront the intricacies of animism and paganism, recognizing the ocean's ancient spirit as a universal force. It's a conversation that rides the crest of belief, facing down the riptides of self-doubt and miasma, while also celebrating the return to mentorship within the spiritual community. Zee's insights into the perennial challenges of faith and the phenomenon of imposter syndrome cast a reflective light on the spiritual journey, providing a beacon for those navigating their own path.In the final wash of insight, our discussion turns to the crucial topic of diversity and inclusivity in the practice of witchcraft. With a commitment to authenticity, we address head-on the barriers of elitism and racism, and the importance of representation in creating a welcoming space for all practitioners. From the joyful energy of the Afro Mermaid festival to the life-altering sea journey that deepened Zee's connection to oceanic magic, this episode is an invitation to embrace the ebb and flow of personal growth and the significance of community connection in the vast ocean of spirituality.Support the Show.Support the show and get tons of bonus content, videos, monthly spell boxes, and more at CrepuscularConjuration.com!Or become a paying subscriber on Buzzsprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1777532/supportWant to see if you're a good fit for the show? This week Frankie D talks about how he had the cops called on him while he was fishing. I also talk about how a group of students in Virgina will not be able to attend prom, which is ticking a lot of students and parents off. I also talk about how Dave Portnoy went on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. I then get a call from Thurman Merman. I end the show by playing the Twitter game with Saturday Night Smoke. I'm still doing “The Frankie D Show” live every Friday from 3-5 pm est on the Live 365 app. Get the Live 365 app and type in FDRS (the name of my radio station), and start listening to “The Frankie D Show” live on Fridays! I'll be posting more segments as podcasts like this one. The link is also in the description here. https://live365.com/station/FDRS-a30497

On this episode, we delve deep into the musical labyrinth of Creed! Join Formidable Opponents, as we soar with eagles, grow out our soul patches and wear our studded belts as we embark on a quest to answer questions like, "Was Creed given a fair shake?" "Why did Scott Stapp tuck in his Tony Romo jersey during a lip-synched performance at a Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving game?" "Why in the hell were there Merman in the My Sacrifice video?" From the theatrical, the pretentiousness and to the introspective depths of their catalog, no white undershirt will go unturned. So grab your air guitar and let's over-pronounce some vowels together as Formidable Opponents debates and discusses, "Best Creed Song."Support the showReach out to us and follow us:formidableopponents@gmail.com (Contact us)https://formidableopponents.buzzsprout.com/ (Website)@Fopponents (Twitter)formidable_opponents (Instagram)FormidableOpponents (Facebook)@formidableopponents (Tik Tok)https://www.buymeacoffee.com/foropponents (Show us some love)Merchandisehttps://formidableopponents.creator-spring.com/Cover art by Creative Little Pillhttps://www.instagram.com/creativelittlepill/https://creative-little-pill.creator-spring.com/Magic Mindhttps://www.magicmind.com/opponents
