Recitals Are Band-Aids: Why Music Schools Are Solving the Wrong Problem | EP 282

Most music schools run two or three recitals a year and call it a retention strategy. I used to think that was enough, too. In this episode, I want to challenge that assumption, because I think it's costing schools more students than they realize, and the fix has nothing to do with running better recitals. In today's episode, I break down why recitals work when they do work, what's actually happening in a parent's mind when they re-enroll after a shaky performance, and why building your retention around two big events a year is less of a strategy and more of a rescue operation. Here's what I cover: Why parents don't quit because their kids hate music, they quit because confidence quietly erodes What a recital actually does inside a parent's brain (it's not what most of us think) Why "the problem is practice" is the wrong diagnosis almost every time What soccer gets right about retention that music schools keep getting wrong The visibility gap that's silently draining families between your recitals In this episode, you'll learn: Why recitals are "confidence restoration events" and what that actually means for how you run your school How to map parent confidence across your school year and see exactly where families are slipping away Why blaming practice charts and accountability systems is solving the wrong problem What the real lever for retention is, and why almost no one in this industry is building around it How to start thinking about weekly visibility instead of relying on two big moments a year What changes when you stop asking "how do we run a better recital?" and start asking a much bigger question   davesimonsmusic.com

Thanks to our Partners, Pico Technology, Autel, and Independent Wrench JobsWatch Full Video EpisodeMatt Fanslow reflects on overhearing a conversation between shop owners about spending more time with family, and it sparks a bigger question: if family time is so important for ownership, what does that mean for employees? This episode looks at the tension between the real financial demands of running a repair shop and the equally real need for technical specialists, advisors, and staff to be present for their families. Along the way, Matt explores PTO, unpaid time off, flex-time realities, compensation, and whether the industry needs to do a better job making employment itself more attractive and sustainable. In this episode:A lobby conversation at Vision turns into a deeper reflection on shop culture and family priorities. The old idea that providing for your family meant spending more time away from them, and how that clashes with newer expectations around presence and availability. The limited options many employees face when family events come up: miss it, burn PTO, or take unpaid time off.Why flex time works better in some industries than in automotive repair, especially for advisors and production-dependent roles.Whether shops need to rethink the “two weeks vacation” standard and build in more realistic room for family events, sickness, and life. The risk of sending employees the message that the only way to get real freedom is to become an owner themselves.A call for honest, two-sided conversations between ownership, management, and employees about what is actually possible and mutually beneficial.Key TakeawayThis is not an anti-owner rant and not an anti-employee rant either. It is really a conversation about incentives, fairness, sustainability, and the need for repair shops to find better ways to make employment workable for people who want both a career and a life outside the shop.Notable ThemesFamily time versus financial realityPTO, unpaid leave, and scheduling pressureWhy shop work resists true flex-time modelsThe economics of employment versus ownershipMutual benefit, rather than one-sided advantageThe importance of open, adult conversations in shop cultureOutro NotesMatt closes by inviting listener feedback and future Rushmore topic ideas, while also thanking sponsors Autel, Pico Technology, Independent Wrench Jobs, and the Automotive Repair Podcast Network. Are you running your recital strategically… or just hoping it works out?  For many dance studios, recital is the single biggest cash infusion of the year, yet most studio owners never actually plan it that way.   In this episode of the Transform My Dance Studio Podcast, Olivia Mode-Cater sits down with DSOA Inner Circle finance coach Paige Sayegh, a studio owner of 32 years who runs a thriving 700-student studio in New Jersey. Through her work coaching studio owners around the world, Paige has reviewed hundreds of P&Ls and helped studios uncover hidden revenue opportunities they didn't even realize existed.  Together, Olivia and Paige break down how studio owners can transform recital from a stressful production into a strategic, predictable, revenue-generating part of the business. From optimizing ticket pricing and merchandise to thinking intentionally about audience spending and future enrollment opportunities, this conversation reveals how small changes can add thousands in revenue, without adding more stress.  If recital currently feels like chaos, guesswork, or simply a way to survive the summer months, this episode will challenge you to rethink how your recital can support the long-term stability and growth of your studio.  What you'll learn  Why most studios approach recital revenue the wrong way  How small pricing tweaks can add thousands to your recital profit  The hidden audiences at your recital who are ready to spend  How to calculate average revenue per student at recital  Why ticket pricing, bundles, and upsells matter more than you think  How to use recital to promote summer camps and future classes  Why recital can be your biggest retention and marketing event  The simple financial benchmarks studio owners should know  How to reverse engineer your recital revenue goals  Why studio owners should decide in advance what recital money is for  How profitable studios create generosity, stability, and freedom  The post-recital analysis every studio should do  If you're ready to stop guessing your recital numbers and start using recital as a strategic tool to strengthen your studio's finances, this episode is packed with practical ideas you can apply right away.  Join our growing community of people just like you inside our free Facebook group. Click here to join!  Watch our video episodes and subscribe on YouTube here. Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast No. 768! This question was sent by our YouTube organist friend Rien Schalkwijk and he writes:Last year I offered a befriended church a Christmas organ concert — completely free. A festive gesture, I thought. It was politely declined, as the church committee felt it would be “too much work” for the volunteers. Quite what sort of work a solo organ recital creates remains one of the unresolved mysteries of the season. But, a week ago, I discovered the same church had organised a Christmas concert with a choir and a pianist, complete with refreshments and a heated church. Clearly, some musical formats are more theologically efficient than others. Here you will find all my scores:https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/en/category/arrangeme/?q=Secrets+of+Organ+Playing&aff_id=454957

At first glance, most music schools look the same. Private lessons. Recitals. Qualified teachers. And yet, some schools quietly stall at 120–150 students… while others keep growing year after year. In this episode, we unpack the real reason behind the plateau — and why it has nothing to do with marketing, talent, or even enrollment. It's about structure. More specifically, whether you've built your school around a schedule… or around a mission. If you've ever felt like your growth hit a ceiling — or you're working harder but not compounding — this episode will change how you think about your business. In this episode, you'll discover: The hidden weakness of private lesson-only models (and why they feel busy but fragile) Why "personality loyalty" is dangerous — and how to build brand loyalty instead The uncomfortable test that reveals whether your school is replaceable What "emotional gravity" is — and how it reduces churn Why churn (not marketing) is the silent killer of scale How mission impacts hiring, onboarding, retention, and even pricing power The structural shift that turns a music school from a job into an asset If you want scale, durability, and a school that doesn't depend entirely on you, this conversation matters. davesimonsmusic.com
