The quakes, along with their aftershocks, collapsed thousands of buildings and took the lives of tens of thousands of people, with a death toll that continues to rise. Although it has been over a week since the disaster, people refuse to give up hope when it comes to the search for survivors. Today, Libby welcomes Dr. John Morrison to the podcast. In addition to being an ophthalmologist and glaucoma researcher at Oregon Health and Sciences University with over 40 years of experience, Dr. Morrison is also Libby's father! He joins her here today to discuss the importance of taking care of our eyes in general, and more specifically, to share important information regarding glaucoma.   Episode Highlights: Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the world, with approximately 80 million people affected globally. 33 million adults over the age of 40 in the United States have glaucoma and it is four times more prevalent in the African American population. The main cause of glaucoma is increased eye pressure which damages the optic nerve fibers, causing vision loss. Unlike most other causes of blindness, people often don't know they have glaucoma as it is painless, slow-moving, and affects peripheral vision before causing central vision loss. Treatments are available for glaucoma, including drops, surgery, and laser surgery. The story of a patient who had severe vision loss and did not realize it until it was too late. Regular eye exams are important to catch glaucoma early. Peripheral vision is affected before central vision, which is why people may not realize they have glaucoma. John Morrison has served Montana and America as a lawyer and public leader for 35 years. John grew up in western Montana working from the age of 13 as a dishwasher, lawn mower, construction laborer, landscaper and radio announcer before going to law school. After passing the Montana bar exam, John worked in Washington D.C. for Sen. John Melcher, where he helped write the Farm Credit Act of 1987, before returning to Montana to practice law. While still in his mid 30s, John received the highest possible rating for legal ability and ethics (AV Preeminent) from judges and other lawyers and has held the rating for 25 consecutive years. The Army is just weeks away from finally letting a significant cadre of soldiers and employees use personal mobile devices to connect to government systems. It's part of a much larger endeavor to create a “unified network” that relies much more heavily on cloud technologies, zero trust principles and commercial solutions.The Army has been engaged in serious testing of technologies to underpin a bring-your-own-device strategy (BYOD) since at least last year. Now, officials are ready to roll it out to an initial user base of potentially thousands of soldiers and Army civilians.The pilot project should be underway within the next 45 days, said Lt. Gen. John Morrison, the Army's deputy chief of staff for command, control, communications, cyber operations and networks.
