Full Text of ReadingsDay of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children Lectionary: 313The Saint of the day is Saint Vincent of ZaragossaSaint Vincent of Zaragossa's Story Most of what we know about this saint comes from the poet Prudentius. His Acts have been rather freely colored by the imagination of their compiler. But Saint Augustine, in one of his sermons on Saint Vincent, speaks of having the Acts of his martyrdom before him. We are at least sure of his name, his being a deacon, the place of his death and burial. According to the story we have, the unusual devotion he inspired must have had a basis in a very heroic life. Vincent was ordained deacon by his friend Saint Valerius of Zaragossa in Spain. The Roman emperors had published their edicts against the clergy in 303, and the following year against the laity. Vincent and his bishop were imprisoned in Valencia. Hunger and torture failed to break them. Like the youths in the fiery furnace, they seemed to thrive on suffering. Valerius was sent into exile, and Dacian, the Roman governor, now turned the full force of his fury on Vincent. Tortures that sound very modern were tried. But their main effect was the progressive disintegration of Dacian himself. He had the torturers beaten because they failed. Finally he suggested a compromise: Would Vincent at least give up the sacred books to be burned according to the emperor's edict? He would not. Torture on the gridiron continued, the prisoner remaining courageous, the torturer losing control of himself. Vincent was thrown into a filthy prison cell—and converted the jailer. Dacian wept with rage, but strangely enough, ordered the prisoner to be given some rest. Friends among the faithful came to visit him, but he was to have no earthly rest. When they finally settled him on a comfortable bed, he went to his eternal rest. Reflection The martyrs are heroic examples of what God's power can do. It is humanly impossible, we realize, for someone to go through tortures such as Vincent had and remain faithful. But it is equally true that by human power alone no one can remain faithful even without torture or suffering. God does not come to our rescue at isolated, “special” moments. Gracias por estar ahí, por compartir su valioso tiempo con nosotros, un pequeño canal del extra barrio de la periferia del Imperio. Les doy la bienvenida a un nuevo directo para hacernos la gran pregunta: ”¿Quién le pone el cascabel al gato?" Este conocido dicho español se utiliza para preguntar quién se encargará de llevar a cabo una tarea difícil o peligrosa, o quién asumirá la responsabilidad de una situación complicada. La frase proviene de una antigua costumbre de atar un cascabel al cuello de un gato para poder oírlo venir y evitar ser sorprendido por él. Como saben los que me siguen, no suelo callarme ni debajo del agua y mucho menos cuando veo que personajes que dicen ser y actuar de una manera lo hacen a la inversa, la mayoría de las veces sin que el público que los sigue y los aupa a la fama sea sabedor de lo que se oculta realmente tras las bambalinas. Si pinchan en la categoría de «El cascabel» en mi blog van a poder leer algunos artículos bien ácidos, bien documentados y que dejarán con el culo al aire a esos personajillos que hacen las delicias del gran público pero que en realidad no son lo que parecen. Dejaré el enlace en la descripción del podcast donde como siempre colocaré artículos para ampliar la información que se dé hoy. Recuerdo especialmente cómo le colgué el cascabel a Eduard Punset mostrando su cara más amarga y mas desconocida en un artículo titulado “PONIENDO EL CASCABEL AL GATO: EDUARD PUNSET”. Allí, mostraba ese pasado de asesor de grandes corporaciones de Punset y su participación en la llamada guerra del agua de Cochabamba o el accidente del gasoducto ejecutado por Telecom Ventures (Telvent) una filial de la corporación española Abengoa que causó la muerte de 42 personas en Venezuela. La única indemnizada fue Petroleos De Venezuela SA, a la que Abengoa tuvo que pagar 14 millones de euros. Punset fue uno de los motores ideológicos del 15M y lo vemos en un video donde Punset arenga a los indignados: «Estáis iniciando una ruta nueva. No paréis». Todos sabemos cómo acabaron algunas de aquellas sentadas, como la de Plaza Cataluña, con una policía pegando a diestro y siniestro a gente que estaba pacíficamente sentada ocupando un espacio público. Poner el cascabel al gato implica ponerse en peligro y posiblemente recibir palos a cambio. Curiosamente Miguel de Cervantes en el capítulo 16 de "Don Quijote de la Mancha", menciona una variante de esta frase para referirse a una situación peliaguda vivida por Sancho Panza: “Y así como suele decirse «el gato al rato, el rato a la cuerda, la cuerda al palo», daba el arriero a Sancho, Sancho a la moza, la moza a él, el ventero a la moza, y todos menudeaban con tanta priesa, que no se daban punto de reposo; y fue lo bueno que al ventero se le apagó el candil, y, como quedaron ascuras, dábanse tan sin compasión todos a bulto, que a doquiera que ponían la mano no dejaban cosa sana.” Sancho Panza representa al hombre común, al hombre de campo o de ciudad que no quiere responsabilizarse por sus actos y pega palos de ciego y que tan solo quiere vivir el dia a dia. Esta clase de hombres o de mujeres no quieren hacerse la pregunta que da nombre a nuestro podcast de hoy. ¡Para eso están los Quijotes, verdad Sancho! Desgraciadamente estamos viendo todos los días como muchos Sanchos trasmutaran a Quijotes tras ser golpeados por su propia policia, ninguneados por su propia justicia, envenenados por su sistema sanitario o utilizados por sus políticos. Hoy le preguntaban a la dra Yane si a golpe de tuit y de podcast se pueden cambiar las cosas. Y yo les digo que si porque la información siempre será poder por mucho que la propaganda del enemigo nos diga lo contrario. Ponerle un cascabel a un gato sirve para anticipar la llegada de este. Informarnos e informar a otros de la llegada de un peligro o de la conveniencia o no de cierta decisión sirve para adelantarnos al golpe de ese enemigo o impedir ser dirigidos en la dirección que éste busca. Pedro Bustamante en su primera obra “El imperio de la ficción.Capitalismo y sacrificios hollywoodenses” nos dice lo siguiente: “Hoy cada vez más el modus operandi del imperio es vendernos mentiras con el envoltorio de «verdades» oficiales. Esta es, como veremos, una de sus muchas ficciones. Estas mentiras se fabrican en buena medida de manera encubierta, y en muchos casos no es posible comprobar si nos están mintiendo, pues todo se reduce a la lógica del «esto es así porque lo digo yo» (que soy el que manda, el que oculta o desvela ( la información). De ahí que hayamos empezado poniendo en cuestión el valor de la verdad como método de investigación. Pues de hecho muchas de estas «verdades» son fabricadas. De ahí que desvelar los métodos cómo opera el imperio, incluso aunque sea apelando a un cierto grado de imaginación, puede ser más certero que el supuesto rigor académico. Después de todo, ¿qué sentido tiene esperar a que se desclasifique determinada información, si esta por principio solo se desclasifica en el momento en que el asunto ya no tiene relevancia? Se entenderá entonces por qué el «riguroso» método académico puede terminar siendo, de manera más o menos intencionada, cómplice por activa o por pasiva de esta estrategia de encubrimiento ¡inherente a la inteligencia del imperio.” Les pondré un ejemplo. Los Estados Unidos desclasificaron algunos documentos militares relacionados con el bombardeo de Hiroshima el 6 de agosto de 1953, coincidiendo con el octavo aniversario del ataque. Pero no fue hasta 2010 que el gobierno de Estados Unidos desclasificó una serie de documentos adicionales relacionados con el desarrollo y el uso de la bomba atómica durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, incluyendo información específica sobre el bombardeo de Hiroshima y Nagasaki. En los documentos desclasificados en 2010 que tuve el placer de leer se veía que eligieron tres ciudades, Hiroshima, Nagasaki y Kokura, esta última se salvó por los pelos. ¿Qué tenían en común las tres? Una amplia comunidad cristiana. La zona de Kokura era una de las elegidas por ese motivo. ¿Por qué no se bombardeó ninguna ciudad con gran industria militar o con recursos estratégicos y si se hizo en zonas de campo con población rural? ¿Por qué los estudios científicos sobre radiación que se elaboraron tras Hiroshima comenzaron tres años mas tarde y no incluyeron los fallecidos por radiación y las enfermedades que provocó durante esos tres años? Muchos de vosotros no habréis oido nunca la historia de los llamados los 26 mártires de Japón. Estos fueron un grupo de cristianos ejecutados mediante crucifixión el 5 de febrero del año 1597 en Nagasaki. Entre ellos un grupo de monjes jesuitas. Parece ser que 348 años más tarde alguien le devolvió el golpe a Japón. Nadie va a relacionar aquella ejecución ocurrida hace casi 350 años con un bombardeo ocurrido hace casi 80 y pasó totalmente desapercibida por la población la liberación de esos documento en 2010 donde se nos decía que el alto mando militar norteamericano sabía que tanto Hiroshima, Nagasaki o Kokura carecían de intereses militares estratégicos. Al contrario, en esos documentos se dice que se quiere probar las armas atómicas frente a estructuras civiles, casas, campos y lógicamente seres humanos. ¡Pero no sirvió de nada porque nadie se enteró al momento! ¡Nadie le puso a tiempo el cascabel a ese gato negro con ojos encendidos en sangre! "Ponerle el cascabel al gato" implica asumir valientemente la responsabilidad de enfrentar una situación difícil o peligrosa. La metáfora proviene de la idea de atar un cascabel al cuello de un gato para poder escucharlo venir, lo que requiere valentía debido al riesgo de enfrentarse a un animal potencialmente peligroso. Ponerle el cascabel al gato puede significar enfrentarse a situaciones incómodas, resolver conflictos difíciles, tomar decisiones impopulares o enfrentar riesgos personales en nombre de un objetivo mayor. Yo he asumido en mis propias carnes lo que es poner el cascabel al gato de la pederastia y a otros muchos gatos. Aún estoy pagando física, moral y emocionalmente esa carga que también me ha costado un desgaste económico importante. Mi valentía y mi determinación me han llevado a asumir la responsabilidad de mis acciones porque siempre defenderé lo que creo es lo correcto. Siempre lo he hecho incluso a pesar de la incomprensión y oposición de mi propia familia. Mi nombre es Ramón y su etimología deriva del germánico reginmund o sea regin: consejo o consejero y mund: que significa protector. Su significado vendría a ser ‘Aquel que da buenos consejos’ o ‘Aquel que es protegido por la divinidad’; por lo tanto significa ‘El protector’. El significado de mi primer apellido Valero no podia ser otro que hombre de valor, hombre valiente. Es un apellido frecuente y distribuido por España hasta en siete ramas diferentes. Deriva del antiguo nombre Valerius, del latín VALEO, que etimológicamente tiene el significado de “regir o ser fuerte, robusto». Fue nombre gentilicio de varias familias romanas importantes y también hay una rama sefardí que fueron y siguen siendo banqueros importantes. Mi segundo apellido que, aunque ya ha sido difundido por la prensa no revelaré, procede del latín Martinus, que al igual que Marcial, Marco, Marcos y Marciano, hace alusión al dios romano de la guerra, Marte, por lo que su significado vendría a ser “hombre guerrero o belicoso”. Es un apellido compuesto donde el nombre del pueblo de un castillo relacionado con el Cid ya ponen la guinda del pastel. Creo que como se dice vulgarmente, me toco a mi ponerle el cascabel a ese hipotético gato infernal, a esa élite inmoral y psicópata que nos quiere enfermos o muertos. Y es que todo esto va del bien o el mal, de la moralidad o la inmoralidad como decía Pedro Bustamante: “Así, tendríamos por un lado la no-moral capitalista, que es la del valor de cambio, y una moral tradicional, que es la de la convivencia-libre, el respecto y la valoración del equilibrio de la vida y la libertad, lo individual y lo comunitario, lo natural y lo cultural. En última instancia la tendencia del régimen capitalista es a destruir por completo la moral tradicional hasta que impere la no-moral. Este es el proceso decadente que estamos viviendo hoy. La doble moral no es, en realidad, más que un estadio transitorio que pretende imponer de manera encubierta la no-moral capitalista, enmascarada tras una moral tradicional ficticia. De ahí, que, como un frente más de la guerra que el imperio libra hoy contra todos, debamos ver en esta dinámica una guerra moral.” Mantenerse firme en medio de la incertidumbre, la presión o el miedo, y seguir adelante a pesar de las dificultades, eso es lo que todos podemos hacer si miramos en nuestro interior y nos ponemos en la piel de los que sufren, de los que son apaleados injustamente, que son violados en sus derechos o en sus cuerpos o mentes. En la vida cotidiana, ponerle el cascabel al gato significa enfrentar los desafíos de manera directa y sin evasiones, incluso cuando eso conlleve riesgos o consecuencias negativas. Requiere coraje para tomar decisiones difíciles, liderar en situaciones complicadas o confrontar problemas que otros prefieren ignorar. Quizás esta soflama solo pretenda enardecer en sus corazones lo que ya habitaba en ellos. A lo mejor mi paso por esta vida haya sido solo un espejismo de lo que mis ancestros entendieron por tener valor. Puede que a través de tuits, artículos y podcast no lleguemos a resolver nada. Pero sin duda no podrán decir que este Valero, este técnico que un dia se preocupo por el mundo no lo intentó, que no le puso el cascabel al gato. ………………………………………………………………………………………. Gracias por estar ahí, por compartir su valioso tiempo con nosotros, un pequeño canal del extra barrio de la periferia del Imperio. Les doy la bienvenida a un nuevo directo para hacernos la gran pregunta: ”¿Quién le pone el cascabel al gato?" Este conocido dicho español se utiliza para preguntar quién se encargará de llevar a cabo una tarea difícil o peligrosa, o quién asumirá la responsabilidad de una situación complicada. La frase proviene de una antigua costumbre de atar un cascabel al cuello de un gato para poder oírlo venir y evitar ser sorprendido por él. Como saben los que me siguen, no suelo callarme ni debajo del agua y mucho menos cuando veo que personajes que dicen ser y actuar de una manera lo hacen a la inversa, la mayoría de las veces sin que el público que los sigue y los aupa a la fama sea sabedor de lo que se oculta realmente tras las bambalinas. Si pinchan en la categoría de «El cascabel» en mi blog van a poder leer algunos artículos bien ácidos, bien documentados y que dejarán con el culo al aire a esos personajillos que hacen las delicias del gran público pero que en realidad no son lo que parecen. Dejaré el enlace en la descripción del podcast donde como siempre colocaré artículos para ampliar la información que se dé hoy. Recuerdo especialmente cómo le colgué el cascabel a Eduard Punset mostrando su cara más amarga y mas desconocida en un artículo titulado “PONIENDO EL CASCABEL AL GATO: EDUARD PUNSET”. Allí, mostraba ese pasado de asesor de grandes corporaciones de Punset y su participación en la llamada guerra del agua de Cochabamba o el accidente del gasoducto ejecutado por Telecom Ventures (Telvent) una filial de la corporación española Abengoa que causó la muerte de 42 personas en Venezuela. La única indemnizada fue Petroleos De Venezuela SA, a la que Abengoa tuvo que pagar 14 millones de euros. Punset fue uno de los motores ideológicos del 15M y lo vemos en un video donde Punset arenga a los indignados: «Estáis iniciando una ruta nueva. No paréis». Todos sabemos cómo acabaron algunas de aquellas sentadas, como la de Plaza Cataluña, con una policía pegando a diestro y siniestro a gente que estaba pacíficamente sentada ocupando un espacio público. Poner el cascabel al gato implica ponerse en peligro y posiblemente recibir palos a cambio. Curiosamente Miguel de Cervantes en el capítulo 16 de "Don Quijote de la Mancha", menciona una variante de esta frase para referirse a una situación peliaguda vivida por Sancho Panza: “Y así como suele decirse «el gato al rato, el rato a la cuerda, la cuerda al palo», daba el arriero a Sancho, Sancho a la moza, la moza a él, el ventero a la moza, y todos menudeaban con tanta priesa, que no se daban punto de reposo; y fue lo bueno que al ventero se le apagó el candil, y, como quedaron ascuras, dábanse tan sin compasión todos a bulto, que a doquiera que ponían la mano no dejaban cosa sana.” Sancho Panza representa al hombre común, al hombre de campo o de ciudad que no quiere responsabilizarse por sus actos y pega palos de ciego y que tan solo quiere vivir el dia a dia. Esta clase de hombres o de mujeres no quieren hacerse la pregunta que da nombre a nuestro podcast de hoy. ¡Para eso están los Quijotes, verdad Sancho! Desgraciadamente estamos viendo todos los días como muchos Sanchos trasmutaran a Quijotes tras ser golpeados por su propia policia, ninguneados por su propia justicia, envenenados por su sistema sanitario o utilizados por sus políticos. Hoy le preguntaban a la dra Yane si a golpe de tuit y de podcast se pueden cambiar las cosas. Y yo les digo que si porque la información siempre será poder por mucho que la propaganda del enemigo nos diga lo contrario. Ponerle un cascabel a un gato sirve para anticipar la llegada de este. Informarnos e informar a otros de la llegada de un peligro o de la conveniencia o no de cierta decisión sirve para adelantarnos al golpe de ese enemigo o impedir ser dirigidos en la dirección que éste busca. Pedro Bustamante en su primera obra “El imperio de la ficción.Capitalismo y sacrificios hollywoodenses” nos dice lo siguiente: “Hoy cada vez más el modus operandi del imperio es vendernos mentiras con el envoltorio de «verdades» oficiales. Esta es, como veremos, una de sus muchas ficciones. Estas mentiras se fabrican en buena medida de manera encubierta, y en muchos casos no es posible comprobar si nos están mintiendo, pues todo se reduce a la lógica del «esto es así porque lo digo yo» (que soy el que manda, el que oculta o desvela ( la información). De ahí que hayamos empezado poniendo en cuestión el valor de la verdad como método de investigación. Pues de hecho muchas de estas «verdades» son fabricadas. De ahí que desvelar los métodos cómo opera el imperio, incluso aunque sea apelando a un cierto grado de imaginación, puede ser más certero que el supuesto rigor académico. Después de todo, ¿qué sentido tiene esperar a que se desclasifique determinada información, si esta por principio solo se desclasifica en el momento en que el asunto ya no tiene relevancia? Se entenderá entonces por qué el «riguroso» método académico puede terminar siendo, de manera más o menos intencionada, cómplice por activa o por pasiva de esta estrategia de encubrimiento ¡inherente a la inteligencia del imperio.” Les pondré un ejemplo. Los Estados Unidos desclasificaron algunos documentos militares relacionados con el bombardeo de Hiroshima el 6 de agosto de 1953, coincidiendo con el octavo aniversario del ataque. Pero no fue hasta 2010 que el gobierno de Estados Unidos desclasificó una serie de documentos adicionales relacionados con el desarrollo y el uso de la bomba atómica durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, incluyendo información específica sobre el bombardeo de Hiroshima y Nagasaki. En los documentos desclasificados en 2010 que tuve el placer de leer se veía que eligieron tres ciudades, Hiroshima, Nagasaki y Kokura, esta última se salvó por los pelos. ¿Qué tenían en común las tres? Una amplia comunidad cristiana. La zona de Kokura era una de las elegidas por ese motivo. ¿Por qué no se bombardeó ninguna ciudad con gran industria militar o con recursos estratégicos y si se hizo en zonas de campo con población rural? ¿Por qué los estudios científicos sobre radiación que se elaboraron tras Hiroshima comenzaron tres años mas tarde y no incluyeron los fallecidos por radiación y las enfermedades que provocó durante esos tres años? Muchos de vosotros no habréis oido nunca la historia de los llamados los 26 mártires de Japón. Estos fueron un grupo de cristianos ejecutados mediante crucifixión el 5 de febrero del año 1597 en Nagasaki. Entre ellos un grupo de monjes jesuitas. Parece ser que 348 años más tarde alguien le devolvió el golpe a Japón. Nadie va a relacionar aquella ejecución ocurrida hace casi 350 años con un bombardeo ocurrido hace casi 80 y pasó totalmente desapercibida por la población la liberación de esos documento en 2010 donde se nos decía que el alto mando militar norteamericano sabía que tanto Hiroshima, Nagasaki o Kokura carecían de intereses militares estratégicos. Al contrario, en esos documentos se dice que se quiere probar las armas atómicas frente a estructuras civiles, casas, campos y lógicamente seres humanos. ¡Pero no sirvió de nada porque nadie se enteró al momento! ¡Nadie le puso a tiempo el cascabel a ese gato negro con ojos encendidos en sangre! "Ponerle el cascabel al gato" implica asumir valientemente la responsabilidad de enfrentar una situación difícil o peligrosa. La metáfora proviene de la idea de atar un cascabel al cuello de un gato para poder escucharlo venir, lo que requiere valentía debido al riesgo de enfrentarse a un animal potencialmente peligroso. Ponerle el cascabel al gato puede significar enfrentarse a situaciones incómodas, resolver conflictos difíciles, tomar decisiones impopulares o enfrentar riesgos personales en nombre de un objetivo mayor. Yo he asumido en mis propias carnes lo que es poner el cascabel al gato de la pederastia y a otros muchos gatos. Aún estoy pagando física, moral y emocionalmente esa carga que también me ha costado un desgaste económico importante. Mi valentía y mi determinación me han llevado a asumir la responsabilidad de mis acciones porque siempre defenderé lo que creo es lo correcto. Siempre lo he hecho incluso a pesar de la incomprensión y oposición de mi propia familia. Mi nombre es Ramón y su etimología deriva del germánico reginmund o sea regin: consejo o consejero y mund: que significa protector. Su significado vendría a ser ‘Aquel que da buenos consejos’ o ‘Aquel que es protegido por la divinidad’; por lo tanto significa ‘El protector’. El significado de mi primer apellido Valero no podia ser otro que hombre de valor, hombre valiente. Es un apellido frecuente y distribuido por España hasta en siete ramas diferentes. Deriva del antiguo nombre Valerius, del latín VALEO, que etimológicamente tiene el significado de “regir o ser fuerte, robusto». Fue nombre gentilicio de varias familias romanas importantes y también hay una rama sefardí que fueron y siguen siendo banqueros importantes. Mi segundo apellido que, aunque ya ha sido difundido por la prensa no revelaré, procede del latín Martinus, que al igual que Marcial, Marco, Marcos y Marciano, hace alusión al dios romano de la guerra, Marte, por lo que su significado vendría a ser “hombre guerrero o belicoso”. Es un apellido compuesto donde el nombre del pueblo de un castillo relacionado con el Cid ya ponen la guinda del pastel. Creo que como se dice vulgarmente, me toco a mi ponerle el cascabel a ese hipotético gato infernal, a esa élite inmoral y psicópata que nos quiere enfermos o muertos. Y es que todo esto va del bien o el mal, de la moralidad o la inmoralidad como decía Pedro Bustamante: “Así, tendríamos por un lado la no-moral capitalista, que es la del valor de cambio, y una moral tradicional, que es la de la convivencia-libre, el respecto y la valoración del equilibrio de la vida y la libertad, lo individual y lo comunitario, lo natural y lo cultural. En última instancia la tendencia del régimen capitalista es a destruir por completo la moral tradicional hasta que impere la no-moral. Este es el proceso decadente que estamos viviendo hoy. La doble moral no es, en realidad, más que un estadio transitorio que pretende imponer de manera encubierta la no-moral capitalista, enmascarada tras una moral tradicional ficticia. De ahí, que, como un frente más de la guerra que el imperio libra hoy contra todos, debamos ver en esta dinámica una guerra moral.” Mantenerse firme en medio de la incertidumbre, la presión o el miedo, y seguir adelante a pesar de las dificultades, eso es lo que todos podemos hacer si miramos en nuestro interior y nos ponemos en la piel de los que sufren, de los que son apaleados injustamente, que son violados en sus derechos o en sus cuerpos o mentes. En la vida cotidiana, ponerle el cascabel al gato significa enfrentar los desafíos de manera directa y sin evasiones, incluso cuando eso conlleve riesgos o consecuencias negativas. Requiere coraje para tomar decisiones difíciles, liderar en situaciones complicadas o confrontar problemas que otros prefieren ignorar. Quizás esta soflama solo pretenda enardecer en sus corazones lo que ya habitaba en ellos. A lo mejor mi paso por esta vida haya sido solo un espejismo de lo que mis ancestros entendieron por tener valor. Puede que a través de tuits, artículos y podcast no lleguemos a resolver nada. Pero sin duda no podrán decir que este Valero, este técnico que un dia se preocupo por el mundo no lo intentó, que no le puso el cascabel al gato. ………………………………………………………………………………………. His Acts have been rather freely colored by the imagination of their compiler. But Saint Augustine, in one of his sermons on Saint Vincent, speaks of having the Acts of his martyrdom before him. We are at least sure of his name, his being a deacon, the place of his death and burial. According to the story we have, the unusual devotion he inspired must have had a basis in a very heroic life. Vincent was ordained deacon by his friend Saint Valerius of Zaragossa in Spain. The Roman emperors had published their edicts against the clergy in 303, and the following year against the laity. Vincent and his bishop were imprisoned in Valencia. Hunger and torture failed to break them. Like the youths in the fiery furnace, they seemed to thrive on suffering. Valerius was sent into exile, and Dacian, the Roman governor, now turned the full force of his fury on Vincent. Tortures that sound very modern were tried. But their main effect was the progressive disintegration of Dacian himself. He had the torturers beaten because they failed. Finally he suggested a compromise: Would Vincent at least give up the sacred books to be burned according to the emperor's edict? He would not. Torture on the gridiron continued, the prisoner remaining courageous, the torturer losing control of himself. Vincent was thrown into a filthy prison cell—and converted the jailer. Dacian wept with rage, but strangely enough, ordered the prisoner to be given some rest. Friends among the faithful came to visit him, but he was to have no earthly rest. When they finally settled him on a comfortable bed, he went to his eternal rest. Reflection The martyrs are heroic examples of what God's power can do. It is humanly impossible, we realize, for someone to go through tortures such as Vincent had and remain faithful. But it is equally true that by human power alone no one can remain faithful even without torture or suffering. God does not come to our rescue at isolated, “special” moments. St. Vincent of Saragossa, one of the greatest deacons of the Church, suffered martyrdom in Valencia in the persecution under Diocletian. He was born in Huesca, Spain and was trained and ordained a deacon by Valerius, bishop of Saragossa, Spain, in the third century. Vincent of Saragossa was one of the Church's three most illustrious deacons, the other two being Stephen and Lawrence.
