This week, we bow down and raise up the almighty guitar heroes! The foundation of Rock n' Punk n' Metal is the guitar and the amazing sounds that those who wield them can make. How do they make such wonderful noise with metal wires on a piece of wood? There's some kinda voodoo in their hands, and we set off on a journey to raise some of the 70s shredders that you may have forgotten! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old 70's Guitar Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever touch a fretboard! Songs this week include: Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush – “Electric Reflections Of War / The World Anthem / The Answer” from Live (1978) Rory Gallagher – “Shadow Play” from Photo-Finish (1978) Tommy Bolin – “Teaser” from Teaser (1975) Robert Fripp – “Disengage II” from Exposure (1979) Wild Horses – “The Rapist” from Wild Horses (1980) Dixie Dregs – “Punk Sandwich” from Night Of The Living Dregs (1979) Alice Cooper – “Devil's Food / The Black Widow” from The Alice Cooper Show (1977) Al Di Meola – “Race With Devil On Spanish Highway” from Elegant Gypsy (1977) Check us out on the Boneless Podcasting Network: https://bonelesspodcasting.com/ Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/ https://www.facebook.com/InObscuria https://twitter.com/inobscuria https://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/ Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/ If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/ If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

S9E23 went out on the 4th of June 2026, LIVE from the TSORR Myoli Beach Studios in the Western Cape.  It wasgreat to be back in the studio and cranking the volume again this week. It's also the beginning of my birth week, and I was celebrating myself hard!   The Diabolical Challenge took us straight into blues-rock heaven with four absolute legends — all killer three-piece bands (guitar, bass, drums): Cream, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, and Rory Gallagher. Proper pioneers and some seriously fiery material that lit the place up.  In the Immortals slot, we fired up Neil Young with the epic 'Crime in the City' (Sixty to Zero)”. We also had some fresh new releases, including  Armored Saint and Brian Fallon, a few curveballs, and the usual favourites that just had to be played.  Artists featured:Jørn, Joe Bonamassa, Mick Jagger, Brian Fallon, Armored Saint, Pat Travis, Wilson, Black Label Society, Cold Chisel, Judas Priest, The Stranglers, Rush, Motörhead, David Bowie, Tool, Steve Vai, Guns N' Roses, Skid Row, Interview - Liaan Horton, The Color Blew, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Neil Young, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Rory Gallagher, The Boomtown Rats, The Distillers, Piet Botha, ACDC, Tom Petty, The Uninvited, Airbourne, Parkway Drive. The Story of Rock and Roll. We knew the band room was going to rock last week as soon as we saw Danny Cox was bringing along his life-long buddy, guitarist Bobby Murnahan, who was visiting from Colorado. As noted here earlier, Danny and Bobby have known each other since before grade school. “Our parents attended the same church,” Danny has said, “and we got acquainted in Sunday school.”Almost immediately the youngsters were united by their interest in guitar innovator Chet Atkins. One day after church, Bobby showed up at the Cox house asking Danny to show him some Atkins-style picking.“I showed him what little I knew,” Dan remembers, and Bob took it from there. He and Dan purchased the Chet Atkins Goes to the Movies songbook and Bobby worked out the tunes. “I learned how to play Chet correctly because of his deciphering abilities,” Dan says. Dan and Bob have been good friends ever since. For more on the story of their friendship, see our earlier Flood Watch article by clicking here. About This Song from Last Week's RehearsalAs we noted in an earlier Flood Watch article, “Deep Ellum Blues” — first recorded on Bluebird by The Shelton Brothers (under the pseudonym “The Lone Star Cowboys”) — is all about life in a notorious neighborhood of Dallas. While New Orleans had its French Quarter and Chicago its Bronzeville, in Dallas it was Deep Ellum with its equally sketchy, colorful résumé. In the 1920s, if you walked down the streets on Deep Ellum, you could easily have rubbed shoulders with Blind Lemon Jefferson and Huddie Ledbetter, with Robert Johnson and Bessie Smith (not to mention with gangsters Bonnie and Clyde and Pretty Boy Floyd).Other versions of the song that celebrated this darker side of the Big D were made between 1957 and 1958 by Jerry Lee Lewis for Sun Records, by Bobby Jackson for Gold Air Records, by Mary McCoy & The Cyclones for Jin Records and, later still, by The Grateful Dead, Levon Helm and Rory Gallagher. For more on the history of this terrific Texas tune — as well as about the district of Deep Ellum — see our earlier article by clicking here.More from Flood Guests?Over the years, many guests — visitors like Bob, as well as returning Flood alumni (whom we call “Floodster Emeriti”) — sit in with us at rehearsals, jam sessions and performances. The band's web site devotes a page to a growing list of these guest appearances, with links to the audio and video of their visits. To use this registry, click here to reach the page, then scroll and click on an underlined date associated with a guest. On the subsequent page, click on the title of the song to hear the audio or on a video's start arrow to view it. This is a public episode. It was dedicated to Nigel Stock, a friend and business partner, a mentor, an inspiration, and an exceptional human being who befriended me 33 years ago.   Nigel passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, 11 April 2026, and I am forever grateful that I had a perfect day with him earlier that very day.  The show was dedicated to Nigel, and those of you who knew him will probably get quite a lot out of it. For those who didn't, the music should carry you through. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Nigel. S9E12 went out live from the TSORR Studio on Myoli Beach on 19 Mar 2026 at 19h00 on Bulldogs Radio.  It was a great show, upbeat and full of fun, despite the drama that seems to surround us these days.  The sad passing of Motörheads Phil Campbell at the age of 64 took me by surprise, so we paid our respects to Phil.  I had a great interview with Mark Biagio of the Fismits and listened to his brand-new track, which is being released on 20 March, so check that out. I also played some more Springbok Nude Girls to make amends for last week.  Dan Patlansky featured on the new Ruff Majik track.  I call this Metal Dan, and I love it.   The diabolical challenge was fun with the hard rock heroes Gary Moore, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Marino, and Ted Nugent, and we chilled out nicely with Pink Floyd's masterpiece 'Time' in the Immortals slot.      Check out the website: www.thestoryofrockandroll.com. S9E11 went out live from the TSORR Studio on Myoli Beach on 12 Mar 2026 at 19h00 on Bulldogs Radio.  It was a strange show. Audience numbers are dwindling on Bulldogs, and now that I have shut down Rebel Rock, I may have to rethink. I'll see how long we can keep this thing going for, but I suspect I will have to find another home for the Live show soon.  The one thing that didn't work was the Springbok Nude Girls track I've called ‘Total Shit' because it came up as 'Blue Eyes' but it's just one of those awful trumpet/warble jams they sometimes do.

Guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa returns to Chewing the Gristle, bringing his characteristic wit and wisdom as he prepares for an ambitious European tour season. This conversation between two master guitarists reveals the realities of sustaining a music career with both artistic integrity and business savvy.Bonamassa takes us behind the scenes of his upcoming three-month European adventure, which includes solo performances, a Black Country Communion reunion after 14 years, and a special tribute to blues legend Rory Gallagher. The logistics are fascinating – he maintains duplicate touring rigs for Europe and America, a practical response to shipping costs that have nearly tripled since the pandemic. The highlight comes when Bonamassa shares treasures from his 1,200+ instrument collection, including his beloved "Principal Skinner" 1959 Les Paul. Rather than treating these vintage pieces as museum exhibits, he plays them regularly, embracing each new ding and scratch as part of their continuing story. "They're not out here to be preserved," he explains, challenging the collector mentality that prioritizes value over music-making.What truly distinguishes this episode is Bonamassa's candid assessment of music business realities. After discovering early in his career that middlemen were taking substantial portions of his performance fees, he developed a direct-to-consumer approach that has sustained his career. "My motto is I don't need millions, I just need enough," he shares, articulating a philosophy that values artistic fulfillment over commercial peaks. For aspiring musicians, Bonamassa offers both sobering and inspiring advice: "You have to love this thing so much that you're willing to take a vow of poverty, still be happy, and can't live with yourself if you don't play." It's this unwavering passion, combined with business acumen, that has enabled his enduring career in the often unforgiving music industry.Ready to hear more wisdom from one of blues rock's most successful independent artists? Davy dropped by to talk about his early years in music, largely influenced by the likes of Rory Gallagher, Eric Clapton, and Robert Johnson. It was the Dire Straits' Sultans of Swing that first bit Davy, and after a few guitar lessons, he chose to take the self-taught route….and the rest is history. The ensuing trail took him from John Mayall and Eric Clapton's ‘Beano Album', to Peter Green's era with Fleetwood Mac, and ultimately landing on Rory-and he was off to the races. It was a fun chat, covering some of his early work with his band, ‘Back Door Slam', and ending on his newest recorded work, ‘The Invisible Man'. We have just one episode left in Season Four….any ideas who it might be? Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: May 28, 2025Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS8: E6: Graham Bonnet & Beth-Ami Heavenstone - The Legend and the Forever FriendSHOW SUMMARY:Rock legend Graham Bonnet and bassist/manager Beth-Ami Heavenstone invite listeners into their world for an intimate conversation about music, recovery, and what's next for the Graham Bonnet Band. Fresh from battling COVID-19, the pair reflects on the unique challenges vocalists face—a sentiment Bonnet captures perfectly when he states, "The voice is the hardest instrument to play... the guitar is easy compared to this."  The conversation weaves through exciting announcements about their upcoming live DVD recorded at the historic Whiskey a Go Go, a venue deeply meaningful to both artists as their first performance space together. Fans will be thrilled to learn about the band's fourth studio album in progress, featuring a special collaboration with Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson. Bonnet shares his creative process, including a touching tribute song to the underappreciated guitar virtuoso Rory Gallagher, revealing the thoughtful songwriter behind the powerful voice.  Some of the most compelling moments emerge when Bonnet opens up about his remarkable past—from his early connection to the Bee Gees (his cousin Trevor Gordon was originally part of the group in Australia) to his heartfelt remembrance of drummer Cozy Powell, whose 1998 passing still visibly moves him. The emotional gravity in Bonnet's voice as he recalls seeing two rainbows touch the hillside after learning of Powell's death demonstrates that behind the legendary rock persona is a deeply feeling human being who treasures these connections.  Between European tour preparations, managing multiple projects, and their life together raising chickens in LA, Bonnet and Heavenstone offer a refreshingly authentic glimpse into their world. Their playful banter and surprising personal revelations—Graham's unexpected love for figure skating and Antiques Roadshow, Beth-Ami's bird watching hobby—create a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes listeners feel like they're sitting in their living room. Whether you've followed Graham's career for decades or are discovering his extraordinary voice for the first time, this conversation captures the spirit of a rock legend who remains humble, creative, and utterly passionate about music.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist(s) Web PageCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages.
