Tokyo Rose was an infamous radio host operating during WWII, helping to spread pernicious Japanese propaganda with the aim of breaking the spirits of Allied troops. Despite the fact that the US State Department would eventually claim that a Japanese American woman, Iva Toguri, was the culprit, the truth is that Tokyo Rose never even existed.  Today's guest is Hannah Lane! Gummy & Jean's Hysterical History

Hello Yankee brothers. This week we will dive into the life and story of Iva Toguri, a WWII Japanese-American radio host for Radio Tokyo, which broadcasted to Allied soldiers in the South Pacific during World War II. Toguri quickly became inaccurately identified with the name "Tokyo Rose," an alias coined by Allied soldiers to describe the female broadcaster. Following the end of WWII on the Pacific front, Toguri was detained by the United States military before being released for lack of evidence. When Toguri tried to return to the U.S., she was subjected to a public outcry, prompting the FBI to renew its investigation of Toguri's wartime activities. She was subsequently charged with eight counts of treason. Her 1949 trial resulted in a conviction on one count, for which she spent more than six years out of a ten-year sentence in prison. Years later, investigators pieced together the history of irregularities with the indictment, trial, and conviction. This included confessions from key witnesses who had perjured themselves during their testimonies. Toguri received a pardon in 1977 from U.S. President Gerald Ford.

For more than 30 years, the United States government considered Iva Toguri a traitor to our nation for her actions during World War II. Many Americans might still think of her that way, since they think of her as the radio host American troops labeled "Tokyo Rose". But the truth tells a completely different story. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," we'll share the story of Iva Toguri, an American woman who got trapped in Japan during the war and wound up as a host playing music during programming aimed at demoralizing American forces. We'll discuss what she did during the war, how she was targeted by our government afterwards, the federal prosecution she faced, and how her name was finally cleared and honored.

I hope you’re ready for another double-header and Kickstarter week because Episode 376 focuses on two excellent projects! First up are Marc Gaffen and Daniel Govar, two of the creators of Tuskers, a high-quality graphic novel you can now support on Kickstarter. Com! This book is about a herd of orphaned African elephants that must escape their homeland as a vicious poaching militia chases them! We talk about how they brought this story to life as well as what we might expect from them in the months ahead. This Kickstarter has already raised its goal, so now is the perfect time to jump on to get great stretch goals! Then everything wraps up with my discussion about Tokyo Rose: Zero Hour with writer Andre Frattino and Andew Birkett from Atheris Entertainment, who is making this Kickstarter happen! Here's the series’ quick description: “This graphic novel is inspired by the true story of Iva Toguri, a Japanese American woman trapped on the wrong side of the Pacific during WW2!” We talk about how the book came to be, discuss Iva Toguri’s fascinating story, and what other projects we can enjoy from these two creators. It’s an excellent historical story worthy of your support, so I recommend you go to Kickstarter at this link after you listen to our interview!
