This week, we're doubling up with Zero Hour! (1957) and Airplane! (1980), two films forever linked by turbulence, tension and parody perfection. Directed by Hall Bartlett, Zero Hour! is a no-nonsense disaster thriller where Dana Andrews plays a guilt-ridden ex-pilot forced to land a crippled airliner after the crew succumbs to food poisoning. Ruthlessly straight-faced, it laid the blueprint for the genre's melodrama and moral gravity.Fast-forward to 1980, and Jim Abrahams along with David and Jerry Zucker hijack the entire premise to create Airplane!, one of the most beloved spoof comedies of all time. With Robert Hays as the PTSD-plagued pilot and Leslie Nielsen delivering deadpan gold, Airplane! reuses Zero Hour!'s plot beat-for-beat...just with more inflatable autopilots and jive-talking passengers. Is this a case of high-stakes drama giving way to high-flying farce, or proof that comedy is just tragedy plus a punchline? Listen on to find out!Zero Hour! is not on Metacritic's all time movie list!Airplane! is movie 2335 on Metacritic's all time movie list!Join Colin & Niall as we embrace the weird, the wonderful, and the downright awful of cinema!Contact us: itwasamoviepodcast@gmail.comSpotify: It was a movie..Spotify pageFollow, rate & review us here:https://linktr.ee/itwasamovieYoutube: It was a movie channel...Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/itwasamovieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/itwasamoviepodcast/X: https://x.com/itwasamoviepodTikTok clips & highlights: https://www.tiktok.com/@itwasamoviepodSee all our ratings & reviews: Google SpreadsheetIMDb List: IMDb | Letterboxd: Letterboxd

This Halloween, Word Balloon heads back to the golden age of radio for a special countdown of my Top 5 Sci-Fi Old Time Radio Show Adaptations — stories that defined cosmic horror and speculative imagination long before television ever caught up.We'll explore chilling classics like Ray Bradbury's “Mars Is Heaven” and “Zero Hour,” the unnerving double-life tale “Marionettes, Inc.”, the surreal mystery of “The Junkyard,” and James Blish's haunting micro-evolution fable “Surface Tension.” This episode features authentic audio clips from each of these legendary radio adaptations — the sounds, the voices, and the atmosphere that made 1950s sci-fi radio unforgettable. And stay tuned — a follow-up episode will present each of these radio shows in their entirety, so you can experience the full broadcasts as they were originally heard. It's a celebration of science fiction, suspense, and Halloween chills
Zero Hour 74-04-30 (067) Terror In The Night
Our journey through the years of "radio's outstanding theatre of thrills" ends with my favorite installments from the final years of Suspense. Ray Bradbury presents a terrifying tale of a popular new kids' game in "Zero Hour" (originally aired on April 5, 1955), and a pharmacist races to correct a potentially fatal error in "To None a Deadly Drug" (originally aired on CBS on October 25, 1955). A man meticulously plots how to dispose of his wife's body in "Variations on a Theme" (originally aired on CBS on February 7, 1956), and William Conrad delivers a tour de force one-man performance in "The Waxwork" (originally aired on CBS on May 1, 1956). A postal inspector tries to intercept a bomb before it reaches its intended target in "Fragile: Contents Death" (originally aired on CBS on May 22, 1956), and DeForest Kelley is a talent agent who finds an act to die for in "Flesh Peddler" (originally aired on CBS on August 4, 1957). A defiant man stares down an army of ravenous ants in "Leiningen vs. the Ants" (originally aired on CBS on August 25, 1957), and anybody could be a killer on a train in "The Man Who Murders People" (originally aired on CBS on November 13, 1960).
When Captain Archer leads a dustbuster club onto the Xindi weapon, Tucker and T'Pol stay aboard the Entrepreneur to destroy the network of spheres. But after the Guardians serve up too much space queso and an old friend arrives to help, Archer blows up the weapon and disappears into a new story arc. Which siren song isn't that hard to resist? Who knows how to party like Klingon warriors? When is it clear that Hoshi is feeling better? It's the episode that explores our ambivalence towards florescent lights.Support the production of The Greatest GenerationGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Follow The Game of Buttholes: The Will of the Riker - Quantum LeapThe Greatest Generation is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam Ragusea & Dark MateriaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestGen and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. SUMMER CROSSOVER SPECTACULAR CONTINUES! We've discussed tie-ins to DC's 1994 continuity-altering crossover Zero Hour on a couple occasions so far, but now we finally tackle the main series itself. Billed as “The Beginning of Tomorrow!” and a fresh entry point for new and lapsed readers alike, writer-artist Dan Jurgens pits DC's heroes against Extant and Parallax for the fate of the universe…and the good guys don't quite stop them in time! The result is a new timeline (reflected in a literal printed timeline of events included in the last issue), a hard reboot for the Legion of Super-Heroes (the first of many, unfortunately), and some questionable changes to Batman's history (which have since been overturned). We also do a real nerdy deep-dive on DC continuity and the lingering effects of 1986's Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Justin finally lets Jim explain what the deal with Monarch was.Discussed in this episode: Zero Hour: Crisis in Time #0-4 (well, actually #4-0…)Bonus episodes and a newsletter at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

Joel Salatin — the self-described "Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer" — joins James Poulos on "Zero Hour" to expose how America's farming system went off the rails. Salatin shares the story of revitalizing his Virginia farm by embracing natural systems, local markets, and regenerative agriculture, instead of government subsidies and chemical dependence. They discuss the roots of America's health crisis, why our food supply chains are dangerously fragile, and why restoring food freedom through neighbor-to-neighbor transactions could save our nation. Salatin lays out his "Food Emancipation Proclamation," warns against top-down government fixes, and explains why the future of America depends on rebuilding local, decentralized food economies. From RFK Jr.'s "Make America Healthy Again" movement to Trump's potential role in freeing the food system, this is a powerful conversation about food, freedom, faith, and America's future. A seasoned organizer since age 13, she has led efforts with Sunrise Movement Silicon Valley, Fridays For Future D.C., and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, bringing powerful grassroots strategy and storytelling shaped by her firsthand experience with California's climate disasters. https://thisiszerohour.org Bruno Fierens is a fifth-generation member of a wealthy Belgian family and the first Belgian member of Millionaires for Humanity, an organization advocating for fairer taxation and a more just global system. Reflecting on issues like sustainability, the fight against poverty, his privileged position in society and his experiences with philanthropy, kept leading him to the same conclusion: “if someone like me is really serious about changing things for the better, fairer taxation is the core issue to act on”. He is a media trainer and former spokesperson based in Brussels and holds master's degrees in political science and communication. www.brunofierensmediatraining.be https://millionairesforhumanity.org Key Highlights 1. Philanthropy: More Than Writing Checks Jacob Harold emphasizes that strategic philanthropy requires more than reacting to symptoms; it's about “thinking structures, long-term impact, and tapping into a toolbox of solutions—from data to community organizing to storytelling.” He challenges us to ask: Are we using all the tools available, and are we learning as we give? 2. Tackling Systemic Issues Over Band-Aid Solutions Bruno Fierens shares his journey—including tangible success and frustration—supporting homeless initiatives in Brussels. His perspective: “Philanthropy is amazing and needed, but it's almost always going to work on symptoms—not enough on structural issues.” Bruno argues for systemic approaches like fair taxation alongside charitable giving. 3. Youth-Driven Action for Climate Solutions Jamie Minden highlights how today's young leaders, born into the climate crisis, are pushing philanthropy toward supporting community-driven and policy-level change. She shares, “Investing in grassroots organizations addressing policy and social change right now is vital if we want to turn the tide on climate.” 4. The Power—and Perils—of Modern Giving Platforms Panelists discuss the transformative role of technology: from social media amplifying grassroots movements to the promise (and pitfalls) of AI and blockchain in making data-driven giving decisions. Caution is raised to prioritize ethical philanthropy that elevates community needs over donor preferences, to avoid what's described as “philanthropic colonialism.” Call-to-Action

Rebels Season 3 comes to a close with a trio of episodes that demonstrates just how far the Star Wars Animation team has come as a group of visual storytellers. Twin Suns brings us to Tatooine as hostile and hopeless as its ever been seen for a final confrontation between two series standbys (and a totally fine Ezra arc about family and fate). Zero Hour gives us Thrawn at the height of victory and vulnerability. The stage is set for the final season... which we'll be bringing to you over the next two months in four episode chunks, so that we're ready to leap headfirst into Andor Season 2 when it debuts in late April!
