È la materia che si fa spirito: una trasformazione che ha luogo non in virtù di qualche intervento esterno ma perché è lo stesso senso a trovare in sé la forza per cambiare, per evolvere.La protagonista, Kaori, ha un super potere: sente gli odori che i venti catturano in ogni luogo del mondo per poi attraversare gli oceani e arrivare da lei. È in grado di assegnare a ciascun essere umano l'odore del suo respiro e di non perderlo, riesce a scomporre gli odori e capire chi li ha generati. Per questo vive lontana da tutti, sulla piccola isola di Yururi di cui è l'unica abitante: l'odore degli altri esseri umani è per lei tanto forte da risultare insopportabile. Il contrario di Kaori – raffinata, eterea, fatata – è Alfredo, suo coetaneo che vive nella casa dei genitori a Lecce. I due dovranno collaborare a distanza per cercare una persona che non si trova più: una ricerca che vedrà Alfredo muoversi tra Barcellona, Berlino e Torino. Questo rapporto improbabile sarà fonte di cambiamento: nella giovane giapponese nascerà per la prima volta il desiderio di un incontro; Alfredo imparerà a osservare con più attenzione ogni cosa intorno a lui, riscoprirà la potenza dei  suoi cinque sensi, rimasti intorpiditi per troppo tempo.Spiega l'Autore: «Questo romanzo viaggia a due velocità. Da una parte c'è l'intrigo, una ricerca condotta in modo insolito, che detta un ritmo incalzante alla lettura; dall'altra c'è il desiderio di stimolare nel lettore la voglia di confrontarsi con i propri sensi – primo tra tutti Nioi, l'olfatto – che sono ciò che ci mette in relazione con il mondo ma, contemporaneamente, sono capaci di spalancare ricordi. In un mondo che va troppo veloce c'è il rischio di usarli poco e male. All'origine di “Nioi” c'è anche l'incontro in una sala del Mao, il museo di arte orientale di Torino, con “carpa che risale la corrente”, un kakemono di Maruyama Ōzui dipinto alla fine del ‘700. Lì davanti – abitato dallo stupore per essere riuscito a scorgere la figura immensa del pesce che in un primo momento mi era celata – mi sono chiesto quante volte mi sia capitato di non riuscire a cogliere le cose importanti, immense, perso come sono nell'attenzione ai dettagli, alle cose trascurabili, o semplicemente distratto, sempre troppo di fretta». Enrico Chierici, nato a Genova nel 1972, chimico, vive a Torino insieme alla moglie e ai tre figli. Per anni è stato vicino ai ragazzi attraverso lo scoutismo, imparando l'importanza di capire e cercare di realizzare i propri sogni. E ha scoperto che scrivere è, per lui, uno di questi. Stiamo parlando dell'Operazione Crossroads, cioè una serie di detonazioni condotte allo scopo di misurare gli effetti delle bombe nucleari sulle flotte militari in alto mare. I test ebbero effetti devastanti: interi villaggi distrutti, animali morti e contaminazione radioattiva delle terre. Gli isolani furono costretti a evacuare, senza poter mai più tornare alle loro case.
