On today's episode of The Right Time, Bomani Jones discusses the New York Knicks offseason and Inside The NBA moving to ESPN. Bo starts off the show by acknowledging that the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder is set, but he'll be previewing that during Wednesday's show (2:12). Bo brings up an article from The Athletic written about the Knicks right after their Game 6 Eastern Conference Finals loss (3:43), which highlighted issues with Karl-Anthony Towns, specifically with his defensive efforts (5:41). Bo also asks how Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson can be on the court at the same time if they're both poor defensively (17:00). Bo transitions to Inside The NBA leaving TNT and moving to ESPN (18:34), which has Bo hoping ESPN does postgame shows (30:41) and why Charles Barkley is the most important person in sports media (31:30). And finally, we have another round of If You Haven't Heard stories involving anonymous employee surveys, how to disappear off the grid and how every college student is just using AI (37:47). Then Bomani listens to some voicemails about the time you tried to fight your father. In times when college students are using artificial intelligence to answer even introductory course questions like: “Briefly introduce yourself and say what you're hoping to get out of this class?” we really have to wonder about how education is going to adapt to a future where students delegate nearly all their classwork to AI. Cal speaks with James D. Walsh after Walsh's New York Magazine article revealed a seismic shift that's redefining the word “cheating” and nudging teachers to think about finding new professions.

On any given day, it's easy to find a new video on the internet or social media purporting to show a violent retail theft. Such videos make riveting viewing, and—coupled with reports from chain retailers about a plague of theft affecting their bottom lines—might suggest we're in a golden age of shoplifting. The reality, however, is likely much more complex. On episode 73 of The Politics of Everything, co-hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene chat with New York magazine staff writer James D. Walsh about how organized retail theft has evolved over the past decade, and with Amanda Mull, staff writer at The Atlantic, about the puzzling lack of data about theft and what other factors could be contributing to the perception of a great shoplifting surge. **TRIGGER WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS TOPICS SUCH AS  ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT THAT MAY BE TRIGGERING FOR SOME LISTENERS. PLEASE USE DISCRETION WHEN LISTENING TO THIS EPISODE.**In the fall of 2010, Talia Ray and her friends lived on campus at Sarah Lawrence College, a private liberal arts school in Yonkers, New York. When her father Larry gets released from prison and comes to live with the students on campus, the events that would allegedly unfold are so horrific and have all the makings of a modern-day cult. Allegedly, through a series of group therapy sessions, deep philosophical conversations and insidious brainwashing, Larry hijacked the lives of this group of college students and exploited them for his own nefarious means. The details in this case are so shocking, you have to hear it to believe it. Using details from 'Slonim Woods 9', a memoir written by Daniel Barban Levin (one of the cult's victims) and a New York Magazine article that broke in 2019 which revealed the level of depravity in this case to the world,  this episode tells the story of a man's extreme power and influence over a vulnerable group of college students who turned to him for guidance to overcome their personal struggles- a decision that changed the course of their lives forever. Disclaimer up front: This is a very sad, disturbing, and explicit episode. It all starts in 2010, when Sarah Lawrence student Talia Ray informs her dorm mates that her dad is getting out of prison and will be coming to stay with them. In the dorm. It would be the first instance in a decade-long campaign of manipulation, abuse, and tragedy. Lawrence Ray was introduced to his daughter's friends as a truth teller, a hero, and a great man. But their lives together would develop into an entirely different story. This is a painful story, but we think it's an important one, and with much appreciation and credit to Ezra Marcus and James D. Walsh, who are heavily to credit for justice being sought in this case.

Everybody loves a good cult story, and today's episode takes a look at two both published in New York Magazine along with returning guests Matt Wilstein and Adi Gordan. First up is "The Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence," by Ezra Marcus and James D. Walsh (https://www.thecut.com/2019/04/larry-ray-sarah-lawrence-students.html). It's the story of a group of college students who fall under the increasingly-bizarre influence of one of their fathers, and who end up forming a small cult based around his teachings. Next up is Kera Bolonik's "The Most Gullible Man in Cambridge," about a college professor who becomes involved in a bizarre love triangle that literally makes him lose his house (https://www.thecut.com/2019/07/bruce-hay-paternity-trap-maria-pia-shuman-mischa-haider.html). Also discussed: whether anyone could be susceptible to a cult, how powerful is pity PLUS Adi Gordan tells possibly the worst story we've ever heard.
