It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Alex Pareene, contributing editor at The New Republic and co-host of The Politics of Everything podcast, to round up the week in news. Then, she is joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of the Bitchuation Room! First, Emma runs through updates on Biden's war in the Middle East, the backlash to that policy, Netanyahu's “From the River to the Sea” proclamation, the growing Gaza death toll, Mexico and Chile's new request for an ICC probe into Israel, Biden's student loan relief, Congress' continuing resolution and CTC, and Washington state's take on Donald Trump's ballot access, before diving into the recent revelations around the deadly inaction from the Uvalde Police in the Robb Elementary mass shooting in 2022. Alex Pareene then joins, diving into Democrats' ongoing attempt to pin the accountability for Biden's war in the Middle East on Brett McGurk, Biden's NSC Coordinator for the Middle East, and touches on Biden's recent statements on his strikes on Yemen as a perfect encapsulation of US foreign policy. Alex and Emma also parse through Bibi Netanyahu's recent statements outrightly rejecting the idea of a Palestinian state, the growing violence in the Middle East, and the hollowness of many 2-state solution arguments. Wrapping up, Pareene touches on Biden's weak support as the 2024 election cycle begins, also exploring results coming out of the Iowa caucuses, and what the hell the non-Trump candidates are fighting for. Francesca Fiorentini also joins, as she discusses her upcoming shows on the West Coast (including an Emma Vigeland appearance), her Seinfeldian experiences doing stand-up, and grappling with the liberal zionist desire to have their genocide and perpetrate it too. Wrapping up, they watch Matt Lee school the US State Department Spokesperson on Israel's controlled demolition of Gaza University. And in the Fun Half: Emma watches Nikki Haley attempt to do a slavery revisionism revision only to be reminded of slavery by Jake Tapper, and Candace Owens inspires a grand debate on what category of killer Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) falls under. Donald Trump gets desperate on Hannity, and Goya's CEO and ND Governor Burgum remind the Fox audience of Trump's qualifications, plus, your IMs! In the early 1970s, ranchers in the Southwest began to share strange reports of cattle mutilations—carcasses discovered with organs missing, and with no obvious physical explanation for the deaths. A variety of culprits were suggested—secret government programs, satanists, cults, or extraterrestrials—despite multiple forensic investigations that turned up nothing suspicious about the deaths. Then this spring, a minor police report about the mutilations of six cattle in Texas went from a Facebook post to multiple national articles in a matter of days. Why did such a seemingly small incident strike such a chord, and what does the American fascination with this particular conspiracy theory say about us? On episode 68 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene chat with Michael J. Goleman, a historian who researched the first great wave of cattle mutilations in the 1970s, and with cultural historian Colin Dickey, who has written extensively about American conspiracy theories, about their historical cycles and why, in the twenty-first century, they seem to have taken a very dark turn. Americans are in a toxic relationship with their automobiles. They're bad for us—polluting, noisy, and increasingly dangerous to pedestrians—yet we remain fully committed to them. They're also bad at their primary function: transport. Urbanists and environmentalists for years have proposed solutions to break the automotive spell: improved mass transit, walkable cities, congestion pricing. But cars (and their companion scourge, parking) still dominate our public spaces. It's no coincidence that Stanford University was founded in Palo Alto, where many decades later scores of tech companies also got their start. Palo Alto is the birthplace of the “Palo Alto system,” an approach to training race horses that attempted to speed up the process by applying techno-scientific principles and injecting lots of cash. This ethos of optimization, argues the writer Malcolm Harris, defined Stanford, which in turn helped define Silicon Valley and the ideology it has spread throughout the world. On episode 62 of The Politics of Everything, Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene talk with Harris about his new book, Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World; the tradition of right-wing thought that underpins the tech industry; and the dark marriage of tech and military power. We've known for a while that gas stoves are bad for both your health and the environment. Not long after, a study asserted that gas-burning stoves are responsible for roughly 12.7 percent of childhood asthma cases nationwide. Suddenly, the appliance acquired a crowd of newly passionate defenders, including Tucker Carlson, who warned that the government was coming for your gas stoves, and Florida Republican representative Matt Gaetz, who tweeted a video of a gas stovetop flame accompanied by the words: You'll have to pry it from my COLD DEAD HANDS! #FoodieRevolt. How did the debate about whether (and how) to regulate gas stoves so rapidly morph into political Kabuki? On episode 60 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene talk about the fossil-fuel industry's misinformation campaign, how our political views inform our consumer choices, and the ways the right leverages the perpetual outrage machine to avoid confronting daunting issues facing the planet. It's Casual Friday! Emma hosts Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and co-host of the Politics of Everything podcast, to round up the week in news. Then, she's joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of The Bitchuation Room podcast! Emma starts off with some more harrowing updates from the wildfires in Maui, where residents were advised by police to jump into the ocean to escape the blaze. Then, MR bestie Alex Pareene joins Emma and the crew to break down the big headlines, starting off with the big win for abortion rights and democracy in Ohio after Issue 1 was rejected by voters. Emma and Alex discuss, given the consistent success that left-leaning issues have had with ballot measures in purple-to-red states, sometimes even more success than actual Democratic politicians, what liberals and the national Democratic party can learn from this. They also wonder if, given the success on the ground in referenda like Issue 1, as well as voters, liberal and independent, now having seen the Republicans assault on democracy with their own eyes on January 6th, 2021, whether the "abortion & January 6th" political strategy is the most salient one going into 2024. They then touch upon the January 6th indictment brought down by Special Counsel Jack Smith on Trump, and how Emma was "libbing out" over the impressive and effective nature of how streamlined Smith made the indictment, seemingly intentionally so. Emma brings up Sam's contention about how Trump is running in the 2024 primary, and how it differs slightly from 2020 and 2016: that Trump, due to all of the legal arenas that he is exposed in going into 2024, is essentially fighting for his life, existentially and politically. News breaks as this discussion is going on, with the announcement from Attorney General Merrick Garland now announcing that he has, upon request, appointed David Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware, regarding the investigation into Hunter Biden. This is SEPARATE from the Robert Hur special counsel into Biden's possession of classified documents, a trend that, Alex points out, has never worked to make Republicans trust that Democrats are being properly overseen and investigated. This leads to a very well-earned discussion on the unique uselessness of Garland as a Cabinet official, compared to someone like FTC chair Lina Khan. The topic turns to Ron DeSantis, whose presidential campaign has continued to crater, and how, in retrospect, it seems as if this implosion has been all but inevitable. Alex marvels at how, even after 7 years of Donald Trump, no one in the Republican Party seems to have any idea on how to actually "deal" with Trump, especially now that, as Matt points out, DeSantis's candidacy is essentially contingent upon an act-of-god taking Trump out of the primary. The MR Crew take a stroll down memory lane, exemplifying Trump's debate prowess in pantsing his fellow primary opponents when Ted Cruz tried to explain "New York values" to a debate audience, remarks that Trump proceeded to destroy him on. This is proof, for Alex, that it almost seems silly that Trump wouldn't want to participate in the first debate in a few weeks, because nothing endears him to voters more, because the talk radio and pro wrestling instincts are actually Trump's strongest (and not DeSantis's). Emma and Alex end their chat discussing yet another bombshell ProPublica report on Justice Clarence Thomas's seemingly endless benefits, trips, and gifts he received from a number of extremely rich benefactors, and what, if anything, congressional Democrats might do to try to rein in corruption on the Supreme Court. The lack of oversight on these unimpeachable justices, and the lack of coherence of any political message coming from the Democrats on what they plan to do to combat the undemocratic nature of the court, will inevitably lead to disillusionment in rank-and-file voters. One last appeal against blanket reverence for institutionalism is made, and then Emma lets bestie Alex go. Then, Francesca joins the MR Crew right before she was going to head out to walk the picket line in solidarity with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. They react to CNBC's Jim Cramer's bone-deep fear of UAW President Shawn Fain, and how, per Cramer, the man is seemingly as charismatic as Malcolm X and as frightening as Freddy Krueger. They then take a look into the romance of Ron and Casey DeSantis and how, during an NBCNews interview, Casey outlines how, when she was undergoing treatment for cancer, Ron...picked up their kids from school. They get a few more laughs in at DeSantis's expense, revisiting some of his extremely unnatural retail politicking, before Francesca jumps off. And in the Fun Half, Emma takes a look at Al Gore's recent TED Talk where he eviscerates the idea of pushing more chips into the middle of the table and investing in carbon capture (something the Biden Administration is literally doing right now), as well as the pick-me girl musings of Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez on Barbenheimer. Plus, your IM's! Alex Pareene then joins as he dives into the continuing story of inflation, and what could have been if the establishment wasn't so keen on ignoring its roots in price gouging. Next, he, Emma, and Sam look to the Republicans' grotesque $900bln defense bill as perfectly exemplary of the GOP's complete capitulation to anti-woke politics despite its stunning lack of popularity – something that's also seen in the falling popularity of the once-prophesied DeSantis campaign, before wrapping up the interview with an assessment of New York state politics post-Cuomo and what a strong NY Democratic party could mean on the national level. Andrew Leeds then walks through the central issues facing SAG-AFTRA, discussing the massive role residuals play in actors' income, and in qualifying for healthcare and other union benefits, only for the streaming revolution to nearly take these payments off the shelves entirely. After expanding on the attempted gigification of the acting industry, Andrew wraps up by discussing the incredible spirit of solidarity in the union (and their sister orgs), and what those on the outside can do to help. Andy Kindler concludes the first half as he assesses the incredible grifting done by Jimmy Door, and tackles why the hell some famous people get so obsessed with being wrong they dive headfirst into bigotry. Are we headed back to the 1970s? Politicians and commentators from across the political spectrum insist we are. They also make clear that nothing could be worse. Why is the decade so feared? What kinds of policy to the grim warnings justify? On episode 56 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene speak with the writer Aaron Timms about “nostophobia,” a term he coined to describe a condition that is something like the opposite of nostalgia, and “'70s syndrome,” the variant currently gripping our collective imagination. It's hard to see how we fix the problems of today with the same failed policy solutions of the 1970s—but that isn't stopping anyone from trying.  Learn more about your ad choices. For a few days in early November, it seemed like Twitter might go down in flames. That hasn't happened—yet—but the prospect of the platform's end has forced a reckoning. And could a diminished Twitter augur the death of social media in general? On episode 58 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene talk with the writer Max Read about Twitter's possible futures, and with Ian Bogost, a contributing writer at The Atlantic, about why we should embrace the end of social media.  Learn more about your ad choices. Elderly lawmakers are nothing new in Washington. Strom Thurmond didn't retire until he was 100; Robert Byrd was still in office when he died at 92. By those standards, Dianne Feinstein, who will turn 90 this month, is practically a youngster. But after her return to the Senate this spring following illness, questions about her ability to serve began to grow more frequent. On episode 69 of The Politics of Everything, co-hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene discuss Feinstein's storied career—and the long-standing reluctance among senators to develop plans for succession within an institution that rewards seniority above almost all else. Then they are joined by comedian and writer Adam Conover to give an update on the WGA writers strike. First, Sam runs through updates on the debt ceiling, labor updates across the US, Biden's student loan forgiveness, Georgia's Trump investigation, and Ron DeSantis' continuing embarrassments, also touching on the Right's most recent super secret documents that will definitely nail the Biden family this time! Alex Pareene then dives right into assessing how much this debt ceiling could've been avoided if Democrats weren't obsessed with publicity and crisis politics and had just passed it in December, walking through the myriad legislative shortcomings from Biden and Democratic leadership since the first separation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill from Build Back Better. Alex and Sam wrap up by tackling the GOP primary, and whether every single Republican hopeful might just be praying for a Trump conviction. Adam Conover then talks Sam through updates on the writers' strike as it reaches its fifth week, tackling the scope of the issues – from the gigification of the job to the labor threat of AI – and exploring why the Film and TV CEOs are so intent on breaking age-old norms of how to make good products just to save a few bucks. Wrapping up, Adam walks through the Guild's proposals and the value of both intra-union and inter-union solidarity. And in the Fun Half: Sam and the MR Crew discuss Trump's claims that going-anti-woke makes you go broke, admire Donald's fine tiptoeing of the vaccine-denial line, and explore Chick-Fil-A's decision to go woke! This week, we're sharing an episode from our friends over at The Politics of Everything, a biweekly podcast from The New Republic that explores the intersection of culture, media, and politics through interviews with scholars and journalists. In ways large and small, the changing climate affects how we live and, for a growing number of people, where we live. Many have already relocated because conditions have become too dangerous back home, whether due to sea level rise, wildfires, or drought. Others are moving preemptively, aiming to settle in a region with less perceived climate risk. On episode 65 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene talk to journalists Debra Kamin and Jake Bittle about the effect that small-scale climate migration is having on one “climate-proof” city—and the potential ramifications of widespread population relocation in the future. GLAAD followed suit, with a letter that also made clear demands. The Times responded with a cool head. The end, right?Nope. The ensuing drama consumed journo Twitter, and by Friday, more than a 1,000 contributors signed the open letter. What's at stake is not merely the paper's coverage of trans issues (which is far deeper and more rigorous than the open letter suggests), but the nature of journalism itself: Should it describe the world as it is, or as it should be? What role should activism play in today's newsroom? Are the people who signed the letter on the right side of history, or the wrong side of history? And what if history actually has no sides? This week we devote the entire episode to this impassioned, twisty, and personally high-stakes conversation for us as journalists. Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Supreme Court finally finalizing their investigation into the Dobbs leak, Hochul continuing her self-immolation tour, Trump coming out against cuts to social security, Florida outlawing AP African American studies, and more, also parsing through the coverage of the recent debt ceiling debate, as Nancy Mace pretends to acknowledge the bipartisan nature of government spending (because that's literally what government is), before totally misunderstanding what goes into the deficit, and why the government must have debt. Alex Pareene then joins as he dives right into this week's updates on the Supreme Court investigation into the identity of the Dobbs leaker, following up the recent announcement that they're “narrowing down” the list of suspects by concluding that the leaker could not be determined. Alex, Sam, and Emma walk through the list of possible suspects, discussing why it seemingly ignored the possibility that it could've come from a Justice (despite proof of multiple leaks coming from Justice Alito), and why a culpable conservative justice could essentially hold the institution of the Supreme Court hostage, forcing them to choose between covering this up (and suffering minor damage to institutional trust) or being transparent (and completely undercutting any remaining trust of the Court), before capping the SCOTUS conversation by tackling the role of non-judicial legal institutions (law schools, organizations, etc.) and liberal justices in opening up the conversation to a changing role of the judicial branch. Next, they shift the conversation to Hochul continuing her strut down her self-made carpet of rakes as she officially retains a lawyer to sue her DEMOCRATIC-led State Senate, exploring why she's acting like she has an electoral mandate despite narrowly winning the governorship and largely undermining down-ballot Democratic races, and what the logic behind turning on women's rights and labor activists could possibly be. They also discuss the greater ineptitude of the New York State Democratic Machine, why Hakeem Jeffries is standing behind Hochul, and the future of the progressive agenda in New York. Wrapping up the interview, Alex, Sam, and Emma discuss Donald Trump's campaign against cutting social security, how it will affect the GOP's platform over the next year, and where it will leave Trump's standing in the 2024 primaries. And in the Fun Half: Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew parse through Candace Owen's statements on women as a distraction in the workplace, before getting into a deep dive into the myriad reveals that have come out of the Daily Wire-Stephen Crowder beef, from the levels of revenue at these conservative publications, to their tactic of trolling in public and keeping the severe bigotry behind the paywall, also debating where Crowder's outrageously poor strategy came from, the potential of a tampering case coming out of this, Crowder's content mill, and the serious backlash from Daily Wire employees like Candace Owens and Matt Walsh as they go to bat for their employer like the good little guard dogs they are, plus, a sit down with Ben Burgis and Jason Myles of “Give them an Argument” and “This is Revolution,” respectively, ahead of their live show with Left Reckoning this weekend! Fires and overheating accidents attributed to lithium-ion batteries killed 19 people in the United States in 2022, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. In New York City alone, six people were killed in these uniquely fast-burning infernos. Experts say poorly made batteries, like those often found on cheaper e-bike models, are the primary culprit. So why is it still so easy to purchase them? Does a typical bike owner know how to safely charge and maintain a bike battery? And are lower-paid workers, such as delivery people, essentially being forced to purchase unsafe bikes just to be able to do their jobs? On episode 59 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene talk with writers Greg Smith, Stephanie Clifford, and Ross Barkan about the New York fires and the populations most at risk, the regulatory challenges of reining in the e-bike industry, and the unintended consequences of our on-demand culture. This week, we're sharing an episode from our friends over at The Politics of Everything, a biweekly podcast from The New Republic that explores the intersection of culture, media, and politics through interviews with scholars and journalists. Are we headed back to the 1970s? Politicians and pundits from across the political spectrum insist we are. They also make clear that nothing could be worse. Why is the decade so feared? What kinds of policy do the grim warnings justify? On episode 56 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene speak with the writer Aaron Timms about “nostophobia,” a term he coined to describe a condition that is something like the opposite of nostalgia, and “'70s syndrome,” the variant currently gripping our collective imagination. It's hard to see how we fix the problems of today with the same failed policy solutions of the 1970s—but that isn't stopping anyone from trying.

Then, Alex Pareene joins as he gets right into parsing through the state of the midterms three days out, with the Dems having essentially secured 50 Senate seats, and the loss of the House largely able to be attributed to races in CA and NY. Next, they discuss the state of Roe coming of the elections, as even with the House minority Dems likely have the strength to push for codification, and walk through the recent judicial obstruction to Biden's student debt relief plan. Alex also gives his perspective on the DeSantis-Trump beef, whether either of them will think twice about running (doubtful), and why – no matter how bright the spotlight – running against Trump is a mistake for GOP politicians. Wrapping up, they tackle the very valid criticisms of New York State Dem leadership by AOC and walk through the likelihood of Twitter declaring bankruptcy and the general destructive force of billionaires. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the difference between sinking money in an industry-plant campaign (Amy McGrath, Charlie Crist) and doing so on a more grassroots campaign (Beto, Stacey Abrams), Tim Pool has a bunch of people on his show to prove to them he doesn't understand politics, and more retiring republicans come out against Donald Trump. Emma also touches on the likelihood of the Mar-a-Lago affidavit's release today, Biden's BOOMING (44%) approval rating, and recent appearances in the wake of electoral Ws having much more energy. Then, Alex Pareene drops by as he and Emma get right into the rising charisma of supposed “Dark Brandon,” as he begins feeling himself coming out of the success of the IRA, January 6th Committee, and canceling student debt, as Democrats finally come along on the whole “actually, getting things done is a good thing” idea (with months until the midterms we can only hope it wasn't too little too late). Next, they dive into the mixed bag of the NY election results, discussing the Democrats absolutely blowing the bag with redistricting, employing the weight of that failure to push progressives into infighting, and why the lesson to be learned from this is to upset the first-past-the-post electoral system, employing ranked voting and other experimental policies, and to either detach from or completely reinvent Congressional Electoral Committees like the DCCC. Wrapping up they dive into the intensifying 1/6 Committee, walking through the foolish institutionalism that would have Merrick Garland believe that following DOJ requisites would shield him from backlash, assessing his base entering the midterms, and the importance of actually putting forwards multiple issues beyond “they're being unfair to me” in winning an election (See: Hillary 2016). Astra Taylor and Emma then conclude the free half by walking through the story of student debt relief, beginning during the Occupy Wall Street movement, met with the typical media dismissiveness, only to evolve over the next decade (with help from Congressional progressives like Warren, Sanders, and even Schumer) into a political movement that not only has viability but even practical implementation, wrapping up by taking on the legitimacy of the “minimal relief” critiques on the debt forgiveness. And in the Fun Half: Emma watches as Blake Masters starts a to-thiel coverup of his anti-abortion past, Jared Kushner discusses his billionaire fantasies of immortality and Martha MacCallum asks if it's hard to be part of a family that gets arrested so much. Tim Pool brings it back to the mediocre rock of the ‘90s, and – much to Jesse Watters' titillation – Missouri brings back spanking as an academic punishment.  The crew also responds to the “why do you deserve student debt relief if you went to a private college” talking point, plus, your calls and IMs! Alex Pareene then dives into why he won't hold his breath until the IRA bill is signed, as he explores the behind-the-scenes surprise at Manchin's maneuver, the op-ed pieces from the establishment placing the blame on him that pushed him over the edge, and the insanity of that being the final factor. First, Emma and Sam touch on Sam's conversation with Destiny before diving into Gavin Newsome making an astonishingly good policy move, initiating the production of Insulin in California, taking a small step in undermining the dangers of IP in medicine. Then, Alex Pareene joins as they discuss how to get up in the morning, the importance of engaging in local organizing – not just in terms of its greater efficacy, but also with the importance of community support – and expand on Newsome's insulin policy as a shocking departure from the lack of imagination in the Democratic Party. Next, Alex, Sam, and Emma look to Biden's recent executive action on reproductive rights, and how it perfectly aligns with the Democratic Party's inability to take actions that don't tiptoe around the issues at hand, doing nothing to genuinely secure the right to reproductive healthcare, and instead focusing on how they can use this rollback of rights to secure votes, despite giving us no idea of why voting for them will help our rights. Diving deeper into liberal impotency, they discuss Biden and Democratic Leadership's refusal to do anything but follow precedent as the right completely obliterates any precedent that comes in their way, with their commitment to the consultant class only giving rise to the term “ultra-maga” to fight back, all while still attempting to make bipartisan agreements with the “respectable” side of a fundamentalist party. They wrap up the interview by looking forward to the upcoming midterms, the impact Dobbs might have on it, and whether Democrats will finally remember that things other than federal elections matter. Then, Lizz Winstead joins as she dives into her work with the Abortion Access Front, centering both practical and medical support funds and the importance of engaging people in their own capacities to both keep them activated and address the countless areas of action that are needed. They also discuss the idea of the right's cruelty being fundamental to their agenda, the flaccidity of Democrats' arguments on “exemptions,” and the importance of uplifting the stories of actual people facing intense oppression and marginalization. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam dive into the EU's recent condemnation of the SCOTUS' overturn of Roe v Wade, the Brits absolutely nail Boris' exit music, and Jack from GA critiques Sam's claims on US Plutocracy. Sam reviews his debate with Destiny last night and the revelation that his opponent truly had no idea what he was talking about, Fox and Friends discuss how Boris Johnson lost the trust of the UK (his GLOBALIST tactics of ISOLATIONISM), and Sam and Emma admire Ron Johnson even thinking he would have time to run an ad that refers to a specific “most recent mass shooting.” OK Gov Stick speaks on the probable cause of CRT in a Tulsa classroom (god knows that city has no history of issues with race relations), Dore reminds us that the true oppressed class is Christians, who totally have no political power right now (especially on the Supreme Court), and Vaughn from Wisconsin discussion institutionalism in law schools. 2853 - Our Political Crisis & What Do Cops Do? w/ Alex Pareene & Sarah Silverman

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by comedian Sarah Silverman to discuss her recent Off-Broadway musical The Bedwetter! First, Emma and Sam walk through the news, including NYC tightening their stringent gun laws, the social security trust getting extended by at least a year, Florida ending gender-affirming healthcare… for adults on medicaid, and Biden visiting Saudi Arabia as OPEC announces a production boost. Alex Pareene then joins as they dive into his article on the “unanswered question,” addressing an entire generation's recognition of our political system as completely broken, before they walk through the weirdness of the state of our economy, including an incredibly strong employment rate and wages on the rise, while the media and government are fear-mongering about gas prices and inflation, and ignoring soaring rent and the inaccessibility of homeownership. Alex then dives into how democratic leadership is viewing this economic moment, as their property value skyrockets but corporations are finding it difficult to higher people an unlivable wages, and looks to the pandemic as a massive cause of the booming housing prices, with the “work from home” economy allowing white wealthier folks to move to lower-rent areas (thus driving up prices), and the stoppage in building production and a collapse of the supply line making the price of creating accessibility sky high. Next, Alex, Emma, and Sam look to the political divide between discussing inflation and gas prices, and refusing to address the inability of Americans to afford a roof over their heads, as representative of the democratic leadership's ideological commitment to corporate neoliberalism even as their polling numbers continue to dwindle. They wrap up the interview with an extended conversation on policing, and how, in the wake of the Uvalde massacre, the media and government have to readdress their relationship to policing, and why Biden refuses to initiate such a political movement. Then, Emma and Sam are joined by comedian, author, playwright, and just all-around creative talent that is Sarah Silverman, as they unpack her work with the late-great Adam Schlesinger to convert her memoir into a critically-celebrated (by Sam, at least) musical, how Sam connects to these stories (obviously important), and the beautiful influence she had on one Emma Vigeland. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma take a call from Ronald Raygun on the absurd pseudo-“standards” that we hold police to, Candace Owens doubles down on the Uvalde shooter being trans, because it's not normal for adult men to purse their lips, and Greg Gutfeld uplifts apolitical niche commentator Joe Rogan. Sam unpacks his takes on Nomiki's race against progressive Kristen Gonzalez, and Jose Vasquez calls in to announce his State Senate candidacy in Reno Nevada. 2839 - The Unserious Democratic Leadership and the Fall of Roe w/ Alex Pareene

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Alex, Emma, and Sam begin with Hannity reassuring his audience that nothing will change with the Roe v. Wade decision, because, of course, the radical left is just hysterical, and the irony of this perspective when the GOP (and Manchin) were just ranting about any legislative codification actually creating a massive imbalance in… keeping the right to abortion the same. This brings them to a problem being faced by both of the party institutions, as now that the fight against Roe has suddenly been won, nobody has a coherent plan for what to do next. Looking to the Democratic leadership, they then dive into their obsession with institutionalism, particularly when it comes to the Senate and Supreme Court, and how it blinds them from the reality that's unfolding before their eyes, as seen with Nancy Pelosi's obsession with a “strong Republican party” and endorsing anti-choice democrats, as if a majority control with a party that doesn't align on fundamental rights could achieve anything when it came to those fundamental rights.  Expanding on this, they explore the countless left-wing policies that somehow are dealbreakers for a Pelosi endorsement, and how the focus on taking down progressives in primaries is a complete waste with an impending midterm where the Democrats have no message and no plan. They wrap up the interview by discussing the out-of-touch nature of the politics of Democratic leadership, Biden's transactional nature as President, and Sam and Emma touch on stoppages in both COVID and Ukraine support, Elon's falling stocks, and the GOP's refusal to look at child poverty as a genuine economic issue. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Republican establishment running away from discussions on Roe v. Wade implications, and also from discussions on Rick Scott's platform, and also discussions on their OWN platform, Oochie Wally compares hosting a podcast to running World of Warcraft, Kilmeade pressures Mark Esper on why he would discuss Trump's plans to bomb Mexico, and Ryan from TN discusses the real horrors of the Roe decision's impact on miscarriages. Joe Rogan asks us to imagine gay people facing homophobia, because that's what's happening to straight kids RIGHT NOW. Sam and Emma dive into the disturbing videos of the IDF's assault on Shireen Abu Aqleh's funeral, Ronald Raygun reflects on the legacy of one Glenn Beck, and Glenn Greenwald discusses self-care tactics such as tweeting death threats, plus, your calls and IMs!
