Cinema loving schlubs watch, discuss, review and debate the finer points of EVERY Woody Allen production and even some adjacent inspired works we find relevant for great film conversation
Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast – it's Adjacent time once again! In this episode, Don and James tackle Stranger Than Fiction (2006), a film that finds Will Ferrell dialing things down and getting existential. None of the usual Ferrell cowbells, screaming or streaking here. Just wristwatches, looming death, and tasty baked goods ahead. Expect a few Woody comparisons from our witty assistant, some literary musing, and hopefully more laughs than Harold Crick gets in a week. ALSO, James stumbles across a gem of a find for all the Woody Allen defence supporters! Hope you enjoy this one – and remember, it's all in the wristwatch. :P Please check out the links below for the full cast, user reviews, ratings and info you may find interesting Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stranger_than_Fiction_(2006_film) IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420223/?ref_=ttnw_ov_i Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/stranger_than_fiction ____________________ Other video discussed in this episode: Proving Woody Allen is INNOCENT (New Investigation) https://youtu.be/2UwB5Bh5pqE?si=kbqGfhrN_wrpcMfW ____________________ We now have a Ko-Fi Page where you can make a ONE TIME Donation / Tip, we as always, highly appreciate your consideration and support - click here: https://ko-fi.com/woodyretro _____________________ A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for the continued support and info – check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT TO THIS OR ANY OTHER EPISODE USING OUR COMMENT SECTION VIDEO LINK HERE >>>>>>> https://bit.ly/warpcom IF YOU LIKE THE SHOW, PLEASE CONSIDER BUYING US A COFFEE / GIVING US A TIP VIA OUR PATREON CAMPAIGN >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always - we would also LOVE a review on iTunes or a 5 star rating via Spotify or whichever podcast platform you are listening on - please find all our connected links below. >>> https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
We are sorry to say there will be no podcast episode for this month April 2025! While we, Don and James are out of town this month, we didn't want to leave you completely hanging - so here's a short update episode to keep things warm until we return next month in May. In this bite-sized instillment, we discuss the curious and quietly revealed news of Woody Allen's first-ever novel, What's with Baum?, slated for release on September 23, 2025, and published by Post Hill Press. The book centers on Asher Baum, a middle-aged Jewish journalist wrestling with anxiety, a fading career, and tangled family dynamics — a premise that feels like classic Woody territory. We do wonder if this is a pivot away from filmmaking moving forward as allen slows down on the movie releases, honestly we are seriously wondering if is this book release even real.. or have WE BEEN DUPED BY Ai? :P Well... as we all try to figure this out, you will of course, find the Amazon link to the book page below. Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent! Following up on our discussion of Miller's Girl, we turn our attention to 2024's Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, and—somewhat unexpectedly—Antonio Banderas. On the surface, this seemed like a fittingly ‘balanced' follow-up to Miller's Girl, but as it turns out… both films manage to disappoint - just in very different ways :P Let's get into it! _____________________________________________ Director Interview Mentioned / Played in Podcast: https://youtu.be/uU6s9Xz90no?si=lmoO_2Z6wHgFnMOD _______________________________________________ For full cast details, user reviews, and more background on the film, check out:
Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent! MASSIVE SHOUTOUT TO SUSAN C WHO GAVE SUCH A GENEROUS DONATION THIS MONTH - THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION SUSAN :) On this episode, our dastardly co-host James has made his film of choice this month to be Miller's Girl (2024), a film that sparked plenty of discussion and controversy upon its release. In the last episode Don actually mentioned the movie in passing and now here we are ... about to dig into this so called midfield of uncomfortable proportion's The question is.. was this so called SHOCKING MESS simply overblown.. does it really deserve the hate it has been getting, is the writer / director just CONFUSED To Love it, to hate it, or to feel somewhere in between, this was definitely another fun discussion here on Woody Allen Adjacent! _____________________________________________ Director Interview Mentioned / Played in Podcast - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0hz-mY4B1Y _______________________________________________ For full cast details, user reviews, and more background on the film, check out:
Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent—the first one of 2025! First of all, thank you for rocking with us for another year. We GREATLY appreciate our lovely listeners, loyal subscribers, and thoughtful supporters! For those who don't know, in Woody Allen Adjacent, our podcast hosts work their way through films they like to compare and contrast with Woody Allen's filmography and/or writing style. Recently, Donald has charged the AI Assistant of the show to dig even deeper and generate a wider list of interesting Adjacent movies—some of which may feel a little ‘out of the norm,' so to speak. As we rotate our turns for Adjacent every month, we're slowly working our way through a fascinating list of films. We've already covered quite a few at this point, some obvious, some not so. For the AI's turn this month, it has chosen Claudine (1974), a touching romantic dramedy starring Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones. Set in Harlem, Claudine offers a heartfelt yet sharp critique of the welfare system, family dynamics, and love in a time of financial struggle. While it arrived during the height of the Blaxploitation era, Claudine took a more grounded and human approach, telling a personal and deeply affecting story. Incidentally, Claudine has a loose connection to Woody Allen via James Earl Jones, who later starred in The Comedians (1974), a film featuring Richard Burton, who worked with Woody Allen in Stardust Memories (1980)—a bit of trivia for those who like to make those six degrees of separation-style links! So, join us for this deep dive into a film that may not be an obvious Woody Adjacent pick but certainly deserves its place in the discussion. - Links Mentioned in This Episode - Please check out the links below for the full cast, user reviews, ratings, and any additional information you may find interesting: Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudine_(film) IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071334/ Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/claudine A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for their continued support and info—check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT on this or any other episode using our comment section video link here >>> https://bit.ly/warpcom If you like the show, please consider buying us a coffee / giving us a tip via our Patreon campaign >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always! Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent - the last one of 2024, in fact! First of all, thank you for rocking with us for another year. We GREATLY appreciate our lovely listeners, loyal subscribers, and thoughtful supporters! For those who don't know, in Woody Allen Adjacent our podcast hosts work they way thought films they like to compare and contrast to Woody Allens filmography and or writing style. Recently, Donald has charged the AI Assistant of the show to dig even deeper and generate an additional wider list of interesting Adjacent movies some maybe we may find 'out of the norm' so to speak. As we rotate our turns for adjacent every month we're slowly working our way through a very interesting list of films. We've already done more than a bunch at this point in time, some obvious, some not so. Fittingly, for the Ai's turn this month, it has chosen Spike Jonze's film - Her (2013) - a well celebrated, Oscar winning, romantic drama, where Artificial Intelligence is at the core of the love story. In this timely episode James and Donald dive into Her, exploring its poignant themes of love, loneliness, and technology in a near futuristic world that actually feels more relevant than ever. We have standout performances by Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson and taking a look back now, we find a surprisingly well star studded supporting cast Incidentally, the main leads here, do have ties to Woody Allen (Match Point, Irrational Man) and as a extra tid-bit of trivia, some people may not know, the original Ai voice that was replaced - Samantha Morton - is another Woody Allen alumni (Sweet and Lowdown) With Joaquin Phoenix already in the spotlight earlier this year due to the Joker 2 box office disaster, we took 5 or so minutes to talk about that situation :P Reality can be just as intriguing as fiction as this movie is drawing parallels to the ever-growing influence of advanced AI platforms like Character AI, in fact we even highlight a riveting mini YouTube documentary that showcases just how close we've come to living out the reality of Her: The Rise and Fall of Character Ai So lets wrap up this year with this thoughtful discussion blending cinema, technology, and humanity, as we consider whether Her is still science fiction - or if we're already living it. Wishing you a very merry Christmas and happy new year 2025! - Links Mentioned in this Episode - The Rise and Fall of Character Ai https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynqAB9K4icg The Real Reason Samantha Morton Was Replaced In ‘HER' (2013) https://www.thelist.com/428711/the-real-reason-samantha-mortons-voice-was-replaced-in-her/ My Complicated Feelings For ‘HER' (2013) by Passion of the Nerd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMJcbigcDJU Please check out the links below for the full cast, user reviews, ratings and info you may find interesting Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Her_(film) IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1798709/ Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/her _________________________________________ A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for the continued support and info – check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community!! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT TO THIS OR ANY OTHER EPISODE USING OUR COMMENT SECTION VIDEO LINK HERE >>>>>>> https://bit.ly/warpcom IF YOU LIKE THE SHOW, PLEASE CONSIDER BUYING US A COFFEE / GIVING US A TIP VIA OUR PATREON CAMPAIGN >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always - we would also LOVE a review on iTunes or a 5 star rating via Spotify or whichever podcast platform you are listening on - please find all our connected links below. >>> https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent! On this adjacent episode we take a reddit recommendation for a movie that looks and sounds very much like films Woody has made in the past.. in fact, this may very well be a 'homage' to such Woody Allen movies: Manhattan and or Annie Hall! However... upon watching.. it became clear to us this might just be one of the most disappointing, perplexing and just poor adjacent type films we have ever seen, putting adjacent aside, its generally a terrible film in the genre of romantic comedies We are by no means film experts but as fans of the genre that have seen and discussed MANY films of this ilk, its quite astounding to see just how bad this one was to watch. We don't believe we have been this critical since our very first adjacent discussion on Lous CK's 'I Love You Daddy' Let us give praise where it is due thought - props to Scott Miller who was Director of Photography, the visual presentation is actually decent.... PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU HAVE SEEN THIS MASTERPIECE BY COMMENTING IN OUR COMMENT SECTION LINK > https://bit.ly/warpcom ------------------------------------ Anyhoo, here are the links we mentioned in the opening news section of the show! Welcome back to another SPOOKY edition of the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast Last time, our favourite cohost with the Most: James, suggested that he would bring up a movie in the horror genre. A genre Woody Allen never quite made a feature film in Hence James thought he would bring up an interesting title we imagine woody may have done in an alternate universe.. ALSO, our Ai assistant conjurers up a complete original(ish) horror movie idea, laid up with a full cast and plot This was definfitely a fun experimental discussion, and the movie in question is a damn good horror comedy in its own right, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT In fact, lets see if we can leave some links below on how you may find it.... https://www.justwatch.com/uk/movie/the-final-girls Thanks as always for listening - leave a comment below if you have a similar type suggestion, or just interact with us - we would love and appreciate your engagement! A warm welcome back to all our lovely podcast listeners We are back after we were unable to record last month, this was due to some personal stuff on Don's part. So as you can see from the title this is going to be a NOT WOODY ACTUALLY episode As always with NWA we talk a bit outside the norm, giving updates on the podcast Monetization situation, other minor updates.. and then for the main event we have a double adjacent-ish discussion on 2 movies. The first being a patreon request from a while ago.. and the second is a movie Don is somewhat fond of.. he just feels that movie may have been a half baked basis for a Woody Adjacent discussion. On the next episode James is doing something different with a horror themed movie he feels Woody Allen could have created (in a parallel universe?) You Know what... lets throw the question out to YOU are lovely listeners... what horror movies have you seen in your movie adventures you feel Woody Allen may have tackled, whether conceptually or loosely... again, see it as an alternate universe question.. we want to hear your thoughts on this specifically - leave your thoughts here > https://bit.ly/warpcom Thanks for listening as always, please check out our associated links below as always! ____________________________________________________- Cool Woody Allen interview from 1979 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIfwVXk_CKI&t=3s Coup De Chance is currently Streaming for Free on Tubi (As of 20/09/2024) https://tubitv.com/movies/100026984/coup-de-chance Upcoming Woody Allen Book By Famous Biographer - Woody Allen: Life and Legacy: A Travesty of a Mockery of a Sham By Patrick McGilligan https://www.harpercollins.com/products/woody-allen-life-and-legacy-patrick-mcgilligan?variant=41526421979170 ____________________________________ The Brothers McMullen Links Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brothers_McMullen IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112585/ Living Out Loud Links Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Out_Loud IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120722/ _________________________________________ A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for the continued support and info – check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community!! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT TO THIS OR ANY OTHER EPISODE USING OUR COMMENT SECTION VIDEO LINK HERE >>>>>>> https://bit.ly/warpcom IF YOU LIKE THE SHOW, PLEASE CONSIDER BUYING US A COFFEE / GIVING US A TIP VIA OUR PATREON CAMPAIGN >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always - we would also LOVE a review on iTunes or a 5 star rating via Spotify or whichever podcast platform you are listening on - please find all our connected links below. >>> https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
Welcome back everyone to the Woody Allen Retrospective podcast! We are sorry to say that due to unexpected personal circumstances, the team won't be able to release a podcast episode this month. That's pretty obvious as we are at the end of the month, but for clarity, we thought we'd put out an official update so none of our lovely subscribers get concerned in lieu of this delay. We'll be back in September, probably late September, with another episode, and because of the delay, Don and James thought it would be fun to do a sort of double feature adjacent discussion. We apologize for the delay and as always, we appreciate your understanding, support, and possible trolling comments. We hope you all had a great August 2024 whether you were on holiday or just kept it local, the summer is coming to an end and its time to knuckle down and wrap up the rest of the year! Did you guys know Woody Allen has a new play called Brooklyn Story? Check out the article link from our good friends at the Woody Allen Pages Website https://www.woodyallenpages.com/2024/08/new-woody-allen-play-brooklyn-story-premieres-in-budapest-in-october/ In fact in the meantime check out their own podcast which is always a fantastic listen! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-woody-allen-pages-podcast/id1566970365 Until September, Thanks for keeping up with us! (This update notice will be deleted upon our September 2024 episode release)
Welcome back ladies and gents to another episode of Woody Adjacent! Soo much is happening in the world of related entertainment and politics it seems we just had to address a portion of it as it relates to certain aspects of our podcast So... starting with Alec Baldwins RUST court case which has now come to a sudden and eventful close. As Mr Baldwin is clearly one of Woody Allens biggest public supporters and listeners still want to hear our take on this eventful case closure Moving on from there we pick up with our Ai Podcast assistant's movie choice of the month... that being 1999's American Beauty. The starring lead in said movie, Kevin Spacey is yet another controversial figure we needed to further discuss, not only in relation to the chosen movie pick but also in terms of his ongoing blacklist backlash causing much discourse in the fiery court of public opinion There is just soo much to discuss on this episode it surely now becomes one of our longest episodes in our catalogue We hope you enjoy, please consider leaving a comment using our special link below as well as our other related links below! In American Beauty (1999) Kevin Spacey stars as Lester Burnham, a disillusioned middle-aged man who has a thankless job and beleives he is trapped in a loveless marriage with his materialistic wife, Carolyn (Annette Bening). As a midlife crisis unfolds, Lester becomes infatuated with their teenage daughter's best friend, Angela (Mena Suvari), which further sparking a desire to reclaim his lost youth and inner happiness. _________________________________ Please Find Links To The Other Sources / Audio Clips Mentioned in This Episode Piers Morgain Kevin Spacey Interview: https://youtu.be/qktc4-9mXXc?si=bUJSqVCNgXM4mKog Alec Baldwin Case Close Breakdown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSEa0GiWXYA Dr Grande On Alec Baldwin Case Close: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xeYO13p3HM American Beauty: Meaning of Rose Essay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvTwjusPAlM Kevin Spacey Court of Public Opinion - Piers Aftermath - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWe2PLhvnMU Please check out the links below for the full cast, user reviews, ratings and info you may find interesting Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Beauty_(1999_film) IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169547/ Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/american_beauty _________________________________________ A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for the continued support and info – check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community!! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT TO THIS OR ANY OTHER EPISODE USING OUR COMMENT SECTION VIDEO LINK HERE >>>>>>> https://bit.ly/warpcom IF YOU LIKE THE SHOW, PLEASE CONSIDER BUYING US A COFFEE / GIVING US A TIP VIA OUR PATREON CAMPAIGN >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always - we would also LOVE a review on iTunes or a 5 star rating via Spotify or whichever podcast platform you are listening on - please find all our connected links below. >>> https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
Welcome back ladies and gents to another episode of Woody Adjacent! On this episode our co-host with the most James has chosen to discuss a very recent Oscar winning movie based off a somewhat popular novel from the early 2000's. It was a great conversation to have even given the somewhat uncomfortable realities the movie satirizes and asks us as the viewer to confront It's actually quite refreshing to see the extremely positive reception to this movie and we definitely ponder how its implications relate to Woody Allen and the Hollywood industry on a whole In American Fiction (2023) Award-winning professor Monk Ellison (Jeffrey Wright) feels stifled. His acclaimed novels lack commercial success, and publishers reject his latest work for not conforming to tired racial stereotypes. Fed up, Monk hatches a plan. He anonymously writes a scathing satire under a pseudonym, "My Pafology," exploiting every cliché about Black life the industry craves. To his surprise, "My Pafology" becomes a runaway bestseller, lauded by white critics who miss the satire entirely. While Monk wrestles with guilt and frustration over his fake identity his family life also begins to further crumbles as his siblings and mother face medical instability and a new relationship becomes more difficult to navigate in line with his pseudo success. Welcome back ladies and gents to another episode of Woody Adjacent! This time we come back to our Ai Companion's recommendation of the very well loved movie: Get Shorty (1995) As well as talking about the original 1995 film adaptation, we also get into a discussion on the much HATED sequel 'Be Cool' (2005) and lastly the more recent fresh TV adaptation created in 2017 It's always interesting to see what the Ai comes up with after analysing Woody Allens Filmography and writing style... its even more fun hearing its reasonings for picking the film itself, which it does! Get ready for a fun ride and another great conversation :) __________________________________________ In Get Shorty (1995) Chili Palmer (John Travolta) is a Miami loan shark with a secret dream. Stuck collecting debts for a ruthless mob boss (Dennis Farina), Chili gets sent to Los Angeles to track down a down-on-his-luck producer named Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman) who owes a hefty gambling debt. Upon arriving in Hollywood, Chili quickly realizes the film industry is surprisingly similar to the criminal world he knows. He finds himself navigating a landscape of broken promises, shady characters, and desperate hustles. As such, James has chosen a British movie series that is a recut of an existing television series focusing on two comedians playing fictional versions of themselves. Its a fun one to start the year off with for sure... lets dig in! In "The Trip" (2010), comedian Steve Coogan embarks on a culinary tour of northern England with his frenemy, fellow comedian Rob Brydon. While ostensibly reviewing restaurants for The Observer, their journey becomes a hilariously melancholic exploration of friendship, aging, and artistic validation. We are here at the very END of 2023 with our last Adjacent release! If you have been keeping up with us in recent months we have been hinting at using Ai as a 3rd source of research in choosing our adjacent picks. We have 65 movies.. one for every year since 1969. James randomly got a 10 from our adjacent list choice picker.. and that means today we are going to talk about..... In 1978's California Suite, four suites witness the bittersweet joys and crushing anxieties of their temporary residents. Through interwoven vignettes of laughter, tears, and the bittersweet tang of human connection, California Suite paints a poignant portrait of life, love, and the pursuit of dreams under the California sun. On this episode of Woody Adjacent, James brings us what seemed like a great recommendation ..only to find not only disappointment but some unfortunate behind the scenes details that still lead to a great conversation regardless :) Fools Paradise (2023) tells the story of a mute man recently released from a mental health facility. This man looks just like a famous method actor that refuses to leave his trailer on the production of a movie set. With the "help" of a down-on-his-luck 'publicist' this nameless man will begin a misadventure through the world of hollywood encountering all the strange types in the hollywood machine The movie stars: Charlie Day, Ken Jeong, Kate Beckinsale, Adrien Brody, Jason Sudeikis, Ray Liotta and Edie Falco to name but a few Please check out the links below for the full cast, user reviews, ratings and info you may find interesting Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fool%27s_Paradise_(2023_film) IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9013340/ Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/fools_paradise_2023 ____________________ As promised please find the link to the podcast interview with Chalie Day here: Let's Shoot! with Pete Chatmon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIoWVQQiHjc _____________________ A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for the continued support and info – check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community!! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT TO THIS OR ANY OTHER EPISODE USING OUR COMMENT SECTION VIDEO LINK HERE >>>>>>> https://bit.ly/warpcom IF YOU LIKE THE SHOW, PLEASE CONSIDER BUYING US A COFFEE / GIVING US A TIP VIA OUR PATREON CAMPAIGN >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always - we would also LOVE a review on iTunes or a 5 star rating via Spotify or whichever podcast platform you are listening on - please find all our connected links below. >>> https://linktr.ee/woodyretro

On this episode of Woody Adjacent, James has chosen another Steve Martin film which is often hailed as one of his greatest and we had an interesting conversation about it - sadly the technical issues persist with the audio as we now deal with a recent bug caused by an apple update which we are still striving to fix ThanksThe Jerk (1979) is a slapstick comedy film about a man who is born an idiot, but becomes a millionaire through a series of lucky accidents. Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent here on the Retrospective Podcast! Today we are talking about another movie from the 90's.. a very very small movie with a hugely celebrated actor.. We have some fun suggestions on what Woody Allen Movies he could have done well in since his actual planned movie role with Woody Fell through in the mid 2000's which was quite unfortunate This movie is a really great showcase of his talents though that many people seemed to have missed or snubbed :P So with that said.. lets talk about 1997's - Two Girls And A Guy Don't forget to connect to us using ing the link below - which also contains details of James newly released book - Don Giovanni: A Novel https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent! We want to give a massive thank you to one of our wonderful listeners: PAUL STICKNEY who recommended we give the works of Edward Burns a look as a good match for future adjacent talks! Edward Burns seems to be most celebrated for his first directorial movie: The Brothers McMullen but before we get to that one i thought lets take a side step and actually check up his follow up movie with a really cool cast So.... let's talk about - 1996's: She's The One Thank you so much for listening - We are still hopeful in asking that you would please consider supporting our colleague and friend Carly in this trying time as she deals with medical treatment and could really use your support - please check out her Go Fund Me campaign below https://gofund.me/f82c5bf2 Don't forget to connect to us using ing the link below - which also contains details of James newly released book - Don Giovanni: A Novel https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent! This month we are talking about one of the worlds most celebrated comedic actors who has some really interesting parallels to Woody Allen - this movie in particular seems to be a jokey-poke love letter to a city very close to his heart that, of course, we have a good ol' conversation about So.. lets talk about 1991's L.A. Story - which has a few surprising cameos! Thank you so much for listening - We are still hopeful in asking that you would please consider supporting our colleague and friend Carly in this trying time as she deals with medical treatment and could really use your support - please check out her Go Fund Me campaign below https://gofund.me/f82c5bf2 Don't forget to connect to us using ing the link below - which also contains details of James newly released book - Don Giovanni: A Novel https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
Wishing everybody a very happy new year 2023 to all our humble listeners / wonderful subscribers! Woody Allen Adjacent is back for another year of great debate and discussion while we await another official woody release - starting the year off with a somewhat fantasy / slice of life romantic drama.. where we had to ask ourselves.. can ONE scene determine the flow of an entire movie? o_0 Lets find out.. as we discuss - 2012's Ruby Sparks Thank you so much for listening - We are still hopeful in asking that you would please consider supporting our teammate and friend Carly in this trying time as she deals with medical treatment and could really use your support - please check out her Go Fund Me campaign below https://gofund.me/f82c5bf2 Don't forget to connect to us using ing the link below - which also contains details of James newly released book - Don Giovanni: A Novel https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
Seasons Greetings All! We are still recovering from the jolliest of seasons.. and that horrible trip we shared with Alex on our last discussion >_
Welcome back to another episode of Woody Adjacent - Tis the season to be jolly and give you a DOUBLE release this month Todays movie up for discussion was actually another request put forward to us by our friends at the Woody Allen Subreddit It was quite the experience.. lol - i hope you can appreciate the conversation.. even if we get some coal in our stockings for our thoughts :P So without further ado.. lets get into - 1970's Alex In Wonderland Thank yo so much for listening - We are still hopeful in asking that you would please consider supporting our teammate and friend Carly in this trying time as she deals with medical treatment and could really use your support - please check out her Go Fund Me campaign below https://gofund.me/f82c5bf2 Don't forget to connect to us using ing the link below - which also contains details of James newly released book - Don Giovanni: A Novel https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
Welcome back to another episode of Woody Adjacent! Todays movie up for discussion is one that seems to have fallen by the waste-side in terms of awareness.. which is extremely surprising given the cast on deck here giving all around good performances... what happened here?!? ...and why is the rotten tomatoes score so harsh on this one.. truly a head-scratcher to us :/ Well i guess we'll have to get into the.. DETAILS of this one.. heh heh XD Okay that was terrible in terms of puns.. but yes, lets get into 2011's - The Details - Starring: Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Banks, Kerry Washington, Laura Linney, Ray Liotta and Jonah Hill as the narrator. Thank yo so much for listening - As James stated near the end of todays discussion - if you would please consider supporting our teammate and friend Carly in this trying time we would really appreciate it https://gofund.me/f82c5bf2 Don't forget to connect to us using ing the link below - which also contains details of James newly released book - Don Giovanni: A Novel https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
We are BACK with a discussion for a movie that was put forward to us by our friends and supporters over from the woody allen subreddit - thanks for the recommendation guys :P This feature.. for better or worst.. is a truly memorable experience that we had a very explorative conversation on.. yeah.. big words for a mammoth of an experience... so get ready to listen to us discuss 2008's - Synecdoche, New York - Written & Directed by Charlie Kaufman As mentioned MANY times during this recording.. we really feel anyone who watches or who has watched this movie should really also check out "YourMovieSucksDOTorg" series of analysis videos on YouTube which really highlights some particularly creative minutiae and will probably increase your appreciation for this movie.. or maybe not - either way, check out the first episode here - https://youtu.be/rjqYpsuBrPU We didn't mention it at the time but James has just released a new book! You can check out the link and all our other socials below! https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
Today on Adjacent we, once again, delve back into the 90's for a much smaller release - centring on an all black cast, which.. for its time.. tells a bit more of a slice of life type story. Rather than what black cinema was highlighting at the time... its sort of refershing to see this one rose to some minor acclain - and of course.. a Woody Allen resemblance can be seen.. which is why we are talking about 1997's - Hav Plenty It is kind of a daring wish for us to see this writer / director do another movie based on his life... he is talented.. so heres hoping! :P As always - THANK YOU for your continued support and for listening! On this episode of adjacent we have 2 returning actors from different projects we have already discussed before joinging forces in what some would call an unlikely alliance? In particular, we highlight Julie Delpy as the writer and director of this release which was a very pleasant surprise Certainly, an interesting pick for this months discussion! - so let's crack on and talk about: 2012's Two Days In New York As always - THANK YOU for your continued support and for listening! On this recording we are going to discuss a title with very familiar faces, adapted from an early 2000's play, touted about in London for a while - where the same actors themselves performed the material before transforming it to the big screen for this film! Admittedly, not the most likeable story narrative.. but as always, it fostered a great conversation.. with lots to ponder Sooooo lets dig into.... 2003's - The Shape of Things You may have also noticed at the end of the discussion we spoke about the transition of our video content - if you have been following us on youtube via Planet Tyro we thank you for subscribing and hope you follow for the future video clips on Manic Expression - links will be shared on the next release Nothing will change here for this podcast feed - only the video content Thanks you for your continued support! Back for another discussion for what we consider another hidden gem with an actor in the spotlight not usually going this route.. and surprisingly not falling flat on their chiseled face for taking this chance :P This time let's talk about 1991's - Oscar (no oscars were won for this feature! haha) Anyhoo....... Back for another film discussion.. and this time we are diving back into the realm of lesser known films for what some consider to be a hidden gem and others a complete waste of time... lets see what we think aye? Well.. as you can see on this episode we are focusing on an Actor who has stolen the attention of hollywood and audiences alike with a surprising moment of arrogance and bad judgement Yes, i have shamelessly taken this oppertunity to talk about the 2022 Oscar slap hear around the world... but ironically - Will Smith has a perfect movie in his filmography that fits nicely as a Woody Adjacent choice... believe it or not.. this is true! So, with that said, lets go back in time for: 1993's - Six Degrees of Separation PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING US VIA PATREON https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro AND ALL OUR OTHER MENTIONED / SOCIAL LINKS CAN BE FOUND BELOW https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
Back for another great discussion.. and thanks to James DW we are taking a turn for the more recent - focusing on another Woody alumni actor / director, deciding to do something much closer to home and his warm Irish heart Apparently the Oscar folk just looove this one.. well, we assume so due to the wealthy academy nominations So, with that said, lets go back in time for: 2021's - Belfast Anyhoo....... We are back.. ironically 9 months after speaking about the previous 2 movies in this much beloved movie series.. and it's fair to say we purposefully separated this discussion from the other two as it feels warranted... if you feel like digging in the weeds of this movie / series Expectations for a movie can certainly lead to dissapointment dangerous if you become invested in the story and don't quite appreciate a tonal change.. this discussion is probably more for the hardcore followers of this series.. If you are one of the hardcore fans - please consider hearing us out in full before you tear us apart in the comments for our critical thoughts :P Lets get in the weeds for - 2013's - Before Midnight Anyhoo....... Back on our first discussion for 2022 and this one is surely a doozie ;P Upon re-listening / editing this session I think we may have rambled maybe a bit too much about our thoughts on the director himself and his motivations / methods in making this movie - but alas, eventually there is a review / discussion about this somewhat controversial dark biographical "comedy" of a film.. which we do have some appreciation for Lets talk about 2005's - I Am A Sex Addict PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING OUR EFFORTS VIA PATREON BELOW! https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro We now have collated all of our social links, playlists and James Books for sale in one link which you can find below to connect with us directly https://linktr.ee/woodyretro Thank you as always for listening - please consider giving us a positive review and or rating on Apple Podcasts.. trust us, it really goes a long way!
Welcome to another episode of Woody Adjacent.. and this edition is actually our last for the year of 2021.. as such, Donald has picked an arguably crowd pleasing romantic comedy to dissect featuring a Queen of 90's rom-coms! Today we are going to talk about 1997's - Addicted To Love We also wanted to announce that we have launched a PATREON campaign for those who are generous enough and able to contribute to our efforts financially.. now again, let me stress this - PLEASE ONLY CONTRIBUTE IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO - of course we as always appreciate those who just listen and share our content but any further support will be highly appreciated and put to good use in the further development of the podcast https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro To keep things even neater moving forward, we have collated all of our social links, playlists and James Books for sale in one link which you can find below to connect with us directly https://linktr.ee/woodyretro Thank you as always for listening - we hope you have a happy holiday season and a great new year... Welcome back everybody to another preposterous episode of Woody Allen Adjacent! Before we get to our movie pick for discussion James brought up an interesting blog piece regarding Wallace Shawn's defence of working with woody allen which can be read here https://www.thewrap.com/wallace-shawn-woody-allen-still-willing-to-work/ It was also brought to our attention that a new woody allen blu ray release is out which.. is kind of meh in terms of the titles chosen but we are still glad to see Woodys back catalogue get any love in these tumultuous times! https://www.amazon.com/The-Woody-Allen-Collection-Blu-ray/dp/B09BTCKGM2?tag=bluray-039-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER ANYHOOO.. lets get back to the show with another pick by James - this time we are going to talk about 2017's - The Meyerowitz Stories What a cast for this movie indeed! - i feel like this movie has honestly not been highlighted enough... and thats why it was a great pick for our playlist James certainly deserves a good ol pat on the back for that one.. as always.. on't forget to follow James D. On this recording we are back to actually talk about a new Woody Allen movie release... yeah.. he's still at it :P - i know right haha Also, we say a sincere farewell to our original co-host who start out with us on this journey: Simon Rad :( Simon, who has decided (in a conversation off mic) to step away from podcasting in general will be missed for his Zany energy and pretty buck-wild moments - he will always be appreciated.. and may even pop in sometime in future... but alas.. our good friend James Daniel Walsh now steps in full time to take on the role as co-host completely on this retrospective so the train will still chuggle along Simon will be missed.. just a little bit (the damn bastard lol) Anyhow.. lets get on with the show and talk about Woodys most latest release.. A film many are not finding to be in the higher tier of Woodys creative abilities but regardless we will, as always, give our honest opinion Lets talk about.. 2020's - Rifkins Festival _____________ As mentioned lets give a very SPECIAL THANKS to The Woody Allen Pages who have now created their own podcast, while at the same time featuring other budding Woody Allen Podcast projects which you can check out using the link below! http://www.woodyallenpages.com/2021/05/woody-allen-podcasts-you-should-listen-to-shows-and-episodes/ Another massive shoutout to the Woody Allen Subreddit of course.... https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen/ _______________________________ PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING US VIA PATREON https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro AND ALL OUR OTHER MENTIONED / SOCIAL LINKS CAN BE FOUND BELOW https://linktr.ee/woodyretro
