James Eder is an Entrepreneur, speaker, mentor & coach who has been on quite a journey both in business & personally. James, Co-founder of Students Beans and founder of Causr, discusses the story of how he came to create both the companies and the hardships along the way. James opens up about the life changing news of being told he’s got a rare heart condition and living with the reality of potentially needing a heart transplant.
In 2005, two weeks before graduating, James Eder launched Student Beans a discounts and deals website for students, making him one of Britain's youngest entrepreneurs at age 22. His brother Michael joined him and together they grew Student Beans quickly to 1 million unique visitors a month. In short, James had "crushed it". But 12 years later, James decided to walk away from the day-to-day operations of Student Beans to focus instead on launching his new startup, Causr. A location based app connecting professionals on the go. In short, James is on a mission to manufacture serendipity. So when Richard Branson wrote about Causr on his LinkedIn profile in November 2016, James knew he was on to something. Problem is, starting a business today and starting a business in 2005 are two very different things... "I was willing to do what others wouldn't." - James Eder In today's episode we talked about why so many of us fear being rejected and why being afraid of failing is getting in the way of your own success. This is a really powerful conversation and I know you're going to love it. As always, if you enjoyed today's episode, share it with a friend, it's the best form of compliment you can give me! On this episode of the podcast, I am joined by James Eder, the founder of a new social app called Causr. James shares insights about connecting with others and the role social interaction plays in our lives. Some of the takeaways from our conversation include: We're social beings. If we can give people context and understand who is nearby, connection–and even community–can form. The importance of face-to-face conversations–especially at conferences. There's an energy in real-life interaction; that's why people still attend conferences. You could probably access all the information online, but interacting in-person takes relationships to a deeper level. Make use of your travel time. Between 30% to 60% of your time traveling is actually used for work and the rest is downtime. Instead of interacting only online, you can use time in an airport to connect with others around you. The idea of net giving versus networking. Ask “How can I help other people?” instead of “What's in this for me?” when attending networking events. Most of us would admit they are oblivious the world around them when face down in a phone. Everywhere we look there are human beings with real stories, lives, and connections that represent meaningful collaboration and even opportunities. James Eder was on the receiving end of several instances of serendipity and these happy accidents changed how he see's the world. Having successfully bootstrapping his first company Student Beans he is now in the process of growing his second called Causr that joins up the dots of those intimate strangers that we see every day but never speak to. After a learning how a Causr user has already generated a £500,000 business deal as a result of using Causr. I invited James Eder onto the show to learn how many other bigger opportunities he has helped create.
