For this mixed up episode I'm joined by Jeff Greiner, the DM of potentially the longest running actual play podcast, The Tome Show. Jeff & I talk about mashups not only within our favourite TTRPG, but within the hobby at large, covering several methods for effectively smushing together your favourite features! Jeff takes us through the ways and means he's brought together often disparate published modules such as Descent into Avernus and Curse of Strahd. One simple but effective method is to sprinkle in some foreshadowing which, despite requiring some additional overhead, reduces that potential for genre whiplash. Talking off, varying theme and tone can keep your game interesting, as 20 sessions of a single vibe can easily be fatiguing for all involved. Which is a perfect segue into how different TTRPG systems inevitably affect the experience, thematically and otherwise; probably why a mashup of them has been difficult to achieve! 04:35 - Combining Published Modules 25:39 - Mashing Up Genres 37:16 - Merging TTRPG Systems 47:58 - Mesh Worldbuilding 58:34 - It's a Monster Mash Find Jeff on: Personal Twitter: https://twitter.com/squach The Tome Show: http://www.thetomeshow.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thetomeshow Twitch: https://twitch.tv/tomeshow Find me on: Website: https://www.thinkingcritically.co.uk Twitter: https://twitter.com/ThinkCritDnD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinking_critically_dnd/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThinkingCriticallyDnD YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH_BSgazjwyshzo1jazHeaQ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thinkingcritically Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/thinkingcritically References: Beadle and Grimm's Torg: Eternity by Ulisses Spiele Patrons: Matt Street @mpstreet88: https://www.virtualtimehustle.com/ Intro Music: 'Local Forecast' by Kevin MacLeod Intermission Music: 'Chill' by Kevin MacLeod Outro Music: 'Local Forecast - Elevator' by Kevin MacLeod
“You told me the opposite of what I have been told by everyone else about how they would attack this market.” Said one CEO to Jim during an interview. Jim got the job and helped lead this company to success. During his stellar career, Jim has been part of 7 startups. We cover a lot of ground that will have pearls of wisdom for all listeners whether you are in the C-Suite or in marketing and sales. Lots of great career advice as well. We set the foundation with Jim's current role at Explorer Surgical where he is heading up sales in a MedTech SAAS technology. Some of you may want to implement this technology once you understand how powerful it is. This technology can really help companies with unique surgical products scale more rapidly with improved consistent outcomes. Then we move into his deliberate process for deciding whether to join a startup organization. During all of this we delve into the strategic and tactical power of startups as learning organizations. I would like to welcome the new members of the Medtech Leaders community. They joined to get access to the Part One Strategic Plan slides that I posted with the podcast in the Strategic and Tactical planning Topic area in the community. And I was about to forget to mention that today's guest, Jim Surek is a member of the MedTech Leaders community. You can learn more about the community at medtechleaders.net. The annual fee costs a few cups of coffee. And, there is a free trial. During the podcast Jim credits several people with contributing to his career including Patrick Pilcher, Ron Pickard, Jeff Greiner, Paul LaViolette, Jennifer Fried and more. Now Go Win Your Week!! Jeff Greiner, owner of the Adventure Center in Asheville, managing partner at Nantahala Gorge Canopy Tours and member of the Wildwater Adventures family, provides tips on how to keep everyone active during challenging times by planning activities together, being outdoors and reconnecting with your youth.Jeff provides a historical overview of how his family's original outdoor adventure business, Wildwater Adventures, along with its expansion from mostly a rafting focus, evolved into aerial adventures as a result of the family traveling both times they expanded into broader services. Jeff explains how a family doing things together, being outdoors and challenging themselves, is the key to staying optimistic and healthy in these challenging times. Also on the show is an update form Tina Kinsey, Director of Marketing, PR and Air Service Development at the Asheville Regional Airport. The dedicated team at AVL is working diligently to keep the airport safe and operational during this uncertain time. Jeff is the CEO of Valencia Technologies and I had the honor to work for him at 2 start-up medical device companies. We dive into his story, how a JAG attorney become a successful CEO of 2 companies that were sold for a combined $3.5 Billion and how he is using his experience building out Valencia Technologies. We go into leadership, team building, people and process, how integrity and honesty must be held high in times of struggle. Just a great interview with a great leader of people and companies.
