________________________________________________________________________________________________Distribuido por Genuina Media Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. George Barrios spent more than three decades moving between strategy, finance, operations, and general management before helping lead the evolution of WWE from a North American live-event business into a global media company. In this conversation, he reflects on the principles that shaped that career and the lessons learned while leading large-scale change under intense scrutiny. A central theme is systems thinking. Barrios explains why effective leaders develop a deep understanding of how customers, markets, functions, incentives, and decisions interact rather than viewing problems through a single functional lens. He argues that better decisions often come from understanding second- and third-order consequences rather than focusing only on immediate outcomes. The discussion also explores where conviction comes from. Barrios rejects the idea that confidence is primarily a personality trait. Instead, he argues that conviction is built through preparation, rigorous analysis, and a willingness to develop a clear point of view. For leaders pursuing ambitious initiatives, this foundation becomes essential when facing skepticism, criticism, and uncertainty. Several practical lessons emerge: Strong leaders seek to understand the entire business, not just their area of expertise. Writing remains one of the most effective ways to sharpen thinking because it exposes gaps, inconsistencies, and unsupported assumptions. Courage is not the absence of fear. The fear associated with difficult decisions rarely disappears, but action reduces its influence. Storytelling is a leadership skill, not a communication accessory. People commit to difficult work when they understand the larger purpose behind it and can see their role within it. Significant achievements often require enduring what Barrios describes as the "swamp of despair," the period when progress is unclear, criticism is high, and abandoning the effort appears rational. The conversation also examines the implications of artificial intelligence. Barrios believes professionals should move beyond simply using AI tools and instead learn how to integrate them deeply into their workflows. At the same time, he emphasizes that AI cannot replace the value of an informed point of view developed through reading, writing, experience, and independent thinking. Drawing on his experience in media and sports, Barrios discusses why the economics of content creation are changing rapidly. As the cost of producing content approaches zero, differentiation increasingly depends on authenticity, trusted expertise, strong brands, and proprietary experiences that cannot be replicated by algorithms. He also explains why successful content organizations should think less about producing individual hits and more about building data-driven systems that consistently create, test, and refine content at scale. This is a conversation about leadership, judgment, resilience, and the discipline required to pursue difficult ideas when evidence is incomplete and consensus is absent. In August 1954, thousands of believers gathered at Giant Rock in Southern California for a massive spacecraft convention, completely primed by "contactee" speakers describing what aliens from Venus supposedly looked like. The event took a bizarre turn when a strikingly beautiful woman and her two companions walked into the crowd, sporting the exact unusual facial features and intense eyes the speakers had just detailed. Panic and fascination erupted as attendees became convinced they were looking at actual Venusians walking among them—a chaotic mystery that only deepened when the trio reportedly fled into the desert night.-----------------Head to asylum817.com - the official website of the host and visual artist, Billie Dean Shoemate III-----------------This podcast can also be heard on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeart Radio, Pandora, and wherever you get your Podcast listening experience.-----------------Want to advertise on the show? This episode is brought to you by Your Clockwise Week—a personalized weekly structure built around your actual life, not an ideal one. If your week feels full but not fitting, you can learn more at mikevardy.com/yourclockwiseweek.There is a difference between confidence and bravado, and most people have never really had to find out which one they actually carry. Confidence — real confidence — is built in the gap between the work you've done and the hard thing in front of you. Bravado is what fills that gap when the work hasn't been done. My guest in this bonus episode has spent decades inside some of the most pressure-tested environments in business, and that distinction was never abstract for him. It was survival.George Barrios is the former Co-President and Co-CEO of WWE and the author of Sometimes Wrong, Never in Doubt: How a Cuban Kid from Queens Transformed WWE. The book traces the lessons he gathered growing up in Flushing, Queens, through his rise inside corporate America, and into the center of a global media pivot that Wall Street initially ridiculed — and later celebrated as one of the most brilliant transformations in the public markets. I jumped at the chance to have this conversation. As a lifelong wrestling fan, I made that abundantly clear. This is a bonus episode, and it more than earned its runtime.Six Discussion PointsReal confidence isn't a personality trait — it's a record of preparation. The "sometimes wrong, never in doubt" mantra only holds up when it's earned through genuine craft-level work, not performance or false bravado. The Swamp of Despair is a real and necessary part of doing anything great — George and his co-CEO Michelle Wilson lived through it during WWE's transformation, and the graphic that mapped that arc became a touchstone for leading others through uncertainty without showing doubt.Your first zip code never fully leaves you — George's Queens upbringing shaped his willingness to disagree, push back intellectually, and refuse to accept "that's just how it is" as an answer. That edge has a shadow side, but directed well, it becomes a competitive advantage.Winning the battle for time, not just eyeballs — the strategic reframe that drove WWE's entire media approach was measuring time spent consuming content, not raw view counts. Attention lives inside time, and that distinction changed everything.Writing is the process by which you discover you don't know what you're talking about — George's most consistent advice to anyone starting out is to read and write relentlessly, not as discipline, but as the only real way to develop a genuine point of view.Inversion thinking as a practical tool — when George and Michelle were on the phone with lawyers trying to shut down pirated WWE content in China, flipping the assumption entirely led to one of the most counterintuitive and consequential decisions of the transformation. Assume you're wrong. Ask what you'd do then.Three Connection PointsSometimes Wrong, Never in Doubt by George BarriosReadwise — the book highlight recall tool George uses daily to surface and connect past reading:What is TimeCrafting? Mike Vardy on managing your relationship with timeThis bonus episode didn't come with a polished set of talking points — it came with the kind of directness that only develops after you've been in enough rooms where the stakes were real and hesitation wasn't an option. If there's one thing I want you to take from this conversation, it's that the confidence worth having isn't something you put on. It's something that accumulates quietly, from doing the work no one is watching. Sit with that for a while. If this episode resonated, I'm exploring ideas like these more deeply in my upcoming book, Productiveness. You can follow along as it takes shape at mikevardy.com/productiveness.
Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. Today's conversation is about reinvention, resilience, and what it really means to lead when the pressure is at its highest. My guest is George Barrios, former co-president of WWE and the architect behind some of the biggest media and sports deals in history and author of the new book, Sometimes Wrong, But Never in Doubt. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR…leaders, ambitious professionals, entrepreneurs, and anyone navigating career pivots, high-pressure decisions, or uncertainty while trying to grow with confidence and conviction. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE…success isn't built on having all the answers but having the conviction to move forward before certainty arrives. George Barrios is a master at this: from helping transform WWE into a global media powerhouse to navigating a very public firing and reinvention, George explains why resilience, continuous learning, and a willingness to take calculated risks are what truly shape long-term success. Throughout the conversation, George and Tiffani explore the difference between confidence and arrogance, why leaders must stay in constant learning mode, and how reading, writing, and developing a strong point of view can separate great leaders from passive participants. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Conviction comes from preparation and doing the work. Confidence and ego can look similar, but they are not the same. Reading and writing are essential leadership habits. Big opportunities often require moving before certainty exists. Failure is often part of the path toward meaningful success. Leaders grow faster when they actively develop their own point of view. WHAT I LOVE MOST…George's perspective that confidence isn't something you're born with but something you build through curiosity, preparation, and action. His insight that "being passive creates self-doubt" feels especially important right now in a world where so many people are waiting for permission, certainty, or someone else to guide them forward. Despite his high intelligence, George Barrios nearly flunked out of both high school and college, drifting without discipline or direction. Realizing talent alone wouldn't build the future he wanted, he cleaned up his act, became obsessive about preparation, and built a reputation for solving hard problems others avoided. That approach helped him rise through HBO and Time Warner before transforming WWE into a global media powerhouse. In this episode, George joins Ilana to share the habits that accelerated his career, the tough leadership decisions behind WWE's growth, and the mindset shifts that helped him reinvent himself under pressure. George Barrios is the former Co-President and CFO of WWE, where he helped transform the company into a global entertainment business. He is the founder of ISOS Capital, an investment and advisory firm focused on sports, media, and technology. George Barrios is a former Fortune 500 executive and the founder of ISOS Capital, an investment firm focused on global opportunities in sports, media, and technology. He previously served as Co-President and CFO of WWE and held leadership roles at The New York Times, HBO, and Praxair, building a track record in strategy, operations, and financial leadership. Derek Champagne talks with George Barrios, former co-president of WWE, about the deal he made to reshape the global company, his public firing by Vince McMahon, the future of the sports industry, and his approach to leadership (and coping with public failure). Barrios tells his story in his new book Sometimes Wrong but Never in Doubt. ABOUT SOMETIMES WRONG BUT NEVER IN DOUBTAt a time when leadership is under scrutiny and industries are being reshaped at breakneck speed, stories of bold decision-making and personal reinvention have never felt more essential. Readers are hungry for narratives that go beyond corporate gloss—stories that show how transformative deals actually unfold, how leaders make high-stakes decisions, and how grit still propels people to the highest levels of business. In SOMETIMES WRONG BUT NEVER IN DOUBT: How a Cuban Kid from Queens Transformed WWE (Skyhorse Publishing; June 2, 2026), George Barrios—son of Cuban immigrants, former co-president of WWE, and architect of the largest transaction in sports history—offers exactly that kind of story. With unfiltered honesty and cinematic detail, Barrios traces his journey from a cramped Queens apartment to the boardrooms where he helped reshape a global entertainment company. Told with the humor, swagger, and introspection of a leader who has lived many careers in one lifetime, the book blends memoir and business insight to reveal how an outsider learned to trust his instincts, move decisively, and lead through uncertainty. Barrios brings readers inside the world of WWE: from his twelve-year partnership with Vince McMahon, to the media-rights revolution that redefined the company, to the personal and professional fallout of being fired in front of the entire industry. But the story reaches far beyond wrestling. It is equally a story of immigration, family resilience, cultural identity, and the relentless pursuit of upward mobility. Barrios reflects on:· High-stakes leadership, including how he learned to take bold action despite backlash, uncertainty, and public scrutiny.· The making of a massive sports deal, and the pressures, strategy, and behind-the-scenes dynamics that shaped an industry-defining negotiation.· Immigrant grit and the American Dream, and how his parents' escape from Castro's Cuba shaped his path and worldview.· Reinvention after public failure, including the firing that could have ended his career and the personal reckoning that followed.· The cultural forces inside major entertainment companies, with unvarnished insight into ego, power, and the real cost of winning. Written with the immediacy of a ringside story and the heart of a family saga, SOMETIMES WRONG BUT NEVER IN DOUBT is more than a business memoir. It is a testament to risk-taking, reinvention, and the belief that anyone—regardless of where they begin—can shape their own future.Order book here: https://georgebarrios.com/Business Leadership Series Intro and Outro music provided by Just Off Turner: https://music.apple.com/za/album/the-long-walk-back/268386576

Episode 320 is the fourth in a mini-series covering Sylvia Duran in Mexico. And what a tale it is. You heard much about Sylvia Duran already in the early Mexico City episodes. We pick the story back up just as the JFK assassination takes place on November 22nd, 1963 and events almost simultaneously begin to unfold and overtake her. The harrowing story of Sylvia Duran, a 26-year-old Mexican consular secretary at the Cuban Consulate in Mexico City is one of the most confounding in the JFK's assassination story. Amidst the chaos following President Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963, Duran's name surfaces in Lee Harvey Oswald's address book, linking her to his September visit where he sought a visa to Cuba. Duran, a socialist sympathizer but not a communist, was under intense CIA surveillance through wiretaps and cameras, and was viewed as a potential future asset due to her past affair with a Cuban diplomat. The CIA's Mexico City station chief, Winston Scott, bypasses protocol and uses his covert LITEMPO network—high-level Mexican officials on CIA payroll—to order Duran's arrest via the brutal DFS secret police. On November 23, agents raid a family gathering, detaining Duran and her relatives in a terrifying show of force. This rogue action alarms CIA headquarters, who fear it could expose illegal operations or disrupt U.S. strategies regarding Cuban involvement in the assassination, potentially sparking nuclear tensions.Under interrogation by DFS deputy director Fernando Gutiérrez Barrios, Duran endures physical torture, including arm-squeezing and beatings, while her family suffers nearby. Coerced into false admissions of a sexual affair with Oswald, she later recants, revealing the ordeal's brutality. The episode uncovers how U.S. intelligence manipulated Mexican authorities to control the narrative, setting the stage for further revelations in upcoming installments.
