That's not in the cards for me anymore…But being [in Bentonville] and being able to just jump on my bike right out of my garage, literally across the street to Coler [Mountain Bike Preserve]. I get to fulfill that desire in a different way. I get to jump on my bike and jump on a trail.” - Jeremy McGhee, (26:46)“The adaptive element to whatever I want to do is my mind. That is my greatest disability, and I have a feeling that a lot of people out there can relate to that. So whatever obstacles are in front of you, that's going to be the hardest thing to overcome. So my advice is to do the things that help that. Taking care of ourselves is really important” - Jeremy McGhee, (35:44)

An athlete with an interesting story, that's how Jeremy McGhee would classify himself. "I never thought I would be a corporate speaker, but here I am." In an image-rich compelling tale, Jeremy recounts the Bloody Couloir expedition, where he climbed and skied a major backcountry ski route, without the use of his legs. He provokes a deep look in the mirror by explaining how he finds motivation himself and invokes a sense of hope by sharing the exciting things he is involved with now. His presentation is about the immediacy of deciding now what you want in life and getting to work on the little things every day to get there no matter what it takes. Jeremy uses the image of a pioneer, traveling into the wild west for the first time, to paint the picture of how he approaches a life without rules or a sense of entitlement. A pioneer needed to find strength in being adaptable because the world was certainly not going to adapt to them. "Life changes. Roll with the punches," Jeremy likes to say. In a world where people live life filled with fear and excuses, Jeremy McGhee has found a way to inspire others to "unlock their minds" and live. Jeremy was a fun-loving, sporty thrill seeker; tough and fearless, the exact traits that would serve him so well when he would have to embrace a new life or die with his old one. His younger brother, addicted to drugs and out of control, was slowly killing himself and Jeremy begged for his own life to be taken in the hopes that his little brother's might be spared. He wished for something big and catastrophic to happen to him, essentially signing his own death sentence as a last resort. That day soon arrived. Mangled from being hit by a car while riding his motorcycle, he was paralyzed and losing blood fast. He would later recount that the street where he laid, felt so warm, almost inviting him to close his eyes and sleep awhile. It was as if death was seducing him, but Jeremy's resilience kicked in and he decided to fight for his life. He lost the use of his legs that day, but Jeremy's accident and his own personal struggles in embracing his new life slowly gave way to helping his brother find a new inner strength he had long since forgotten. He is no longer just a sporty thrill seeker, but a bright, inspiring author and speaker. Jeremy is a truly gifted individual who has literally taken his life to new heights. After climbing a treacherous major backcountry peak, he turned around to ski the steep pitch in his "sit-ski." Every moment was caught on film and released as a feature length documentary in 2013. From the painstaking 1000+ pull-ups to reach the top, to the tears of joy and exhaustion, those moments capture the true essence of the man Jeremy has become: A born leader and go-getter with solid resolve. More About Speaker, Jeremy McGhee . . . Appearing on the TEDx stage, speaking at schools and motivating professional sports teams, are just a few of the ways he is dedicating his life to helping others. By simply living his dream, Jeremy McGhee will probably never fully realize his impact on others.
Meet Jeremy McGhee. Years ago, after a near-fatal car crash took away the use of his legs, Jeremy became the first paraplegic in 2012 to climb and descend Bloody Couloir, a major backcountry ski route in the Eastern Sierras, all with only the use of his arms. Today, he's an active and vocal advocate committed to pioneering trails for adaptive mountain bike riders and disabled athletes with his own YouTube series, called the UNPavement, which documents all his adventures. Jeremy set down with Nat Ross, Bentonville resident and Mountain Bike Hall of Famer, to talk about his recent adventure in Bentonville, Arkansas, the Mountain Biking Capital of the World.
Adaptive athlete Jeremy McGhee doesn't let being a paraplegic slow down his athletic prowess as he skis, surfs and rides his mountain handbike. Jeremy shares his story and the work he is doing to make mountain bike trails more accessible for riders of all abilities. Also, Jeremy recently spent some time in Northwest Arkansas shooting some really cool video at places like Coler, The Railyard and Blowing Springs.
Jeremy McGhee is one tough dude. He's pushed his paraplegic body to breaking point in the mountains, in the surf, and in the gym, and is now on a mission to document the world's mountain bike tracks for adaptive riders, through his organisation The UNpavement. This is a must listen episode if you love outdoor adventure and biking. Check it!
Episode 8 features an interview with Jeremy McGhee, a multi-sport paraplegic athlete. Jeremy talks about why continuing to be an athlete is so important and life affirming, what he struggles with most in his day-to-day athletic life and what sport he misses most. He shares the complex nature of motivation and his comparatively simple secret to push through anything. Jeremy also describes the high-tech mountain bike that enables him to continue riding on remote, demanding terrain and discusses what he would like able-bodied athletes to know about para athletes. This conversation will inspire you and, perhaps, get you to think about your own challenges a little differently.

A conversation with Jeremy McGhee, adaptive bike ride, surfer and skier extraordinaire. Since a car hit Jeremy on his motorbike and took away the use of his legs, 16 years ago, he has made it his life's mission to get off the pavement. Nothing gets this guy down. “If it’s money, figure it out. If it’s time, figure it out. You get less of it every day, so do it now” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Imagine climbing a narrow gully of snow lined with rock faces and cliffs in the Sierra Mountains. In the cacophonous silence of this remote landscape, you hear every morsel of your breath and every crack of snow beneath you. Before you lies a 50-degree pitch on your ascent to the top and although you've been climbing for hours the sky still seems so far away. You've never been more awake in your life. You are strapped to a child's plastic sled with only the use of your arms as the carrier to your destination. Your life is clenched tightly around a pull-up bar tethered on belay and every inch of the climb delivers searing pain that weighs heavy on your already exhausted body and mind. With seemingly nothing left to give, how do you continue? When everything in his body told him that he had nothing left, Jeremy would exceed his limitations and complete another pull-up. He knew that if he could give 100% of himself to each one, despite the overwhelming fatigue and discomfort, that he would gain maximum travel towards reaching the top of the mountain that haunted him for seven years. Bloody Couloir is a coveted ski and snowboard destination in the Mammoth Lakes region and the spot where Jeremy showed us all what it means to put inspiration into action. A runner at heart, he was left without the use of his legs after a motorcycle accident in 2001 but that has clearly not stopped this athlete from crushing his goals. Jeremy possesses a mass amount of grit and will and through his loss, he is exploring a whole new level of what is possible.
