In today's episode Erin Gallardo, PT, DPT, NCS talks with Annie Tapp, PT, DPT, PhD, NCS to discuss her research on the barriers and facilitators to implementing high-intensity gait training for stroke rehabilitation (and beyond). Months ago Annie was recruiting survey respondents for her PhD dissertation study on high intensity gait training in inpatient rehab. NeuroCollaborative allowed her to email and post her survey to our audience and today's conversation is a follow up to see what she learned. Annie's research data revealed common facilitators and barriers to implementing high intensity gait training for clinicians. There were some surprises and she shares what they were as well as future research questions. Does it have to only be done with walking? We discussed the core factors that make high intensity training desirable as well as what to do when you don't have the equipment or an appropriate candidate for treadmill training. You'll learn creative ways to implement high intensity training as well as the reason behind it. We also discuss what you'll also need to add in addition to high intensity training because this impairment does not necessarily improve and needs to be addressed separately. Nervous about taking someone with an acute stroke who may have never worked out before into high levels of intensity? We talk about that too! Feel free to contact Dr. Annie Tapp, PT, DPT, PhD Articles mentioned in the episode: Tapp, A., Griswold, D., Dray, D., Landgraff, N., & Learman, K. (2024). Dean's Chat hosts, Dr. Jensen and Richey, welcome Dr. Tiffany Hughes to Dean's Chat!   Dr. Tiffany Hughes is Assistant Professor in the Master of Public Health Program at Midwestern. She holds a Ph.D. in Aging Studies, M.P.H. in Epidemiology, and M.B.A. in Healthcare Administration. She completed post-doctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh in geriatric psychiatry.  Her area of expertise is public health and aging with a focus on dementia and falls prevention.  She is also interested in geriatric education and providing experiential opportunities to get students interested in working with the aging population.  She became involved with the Walk with a Doc program and the Ohio Older Adult Falls Prevention Coalition while faculty at Youngstown State University. She is now a member of the Arizona Falls Prevention Coalition and their partner in the Walk with a Doc initiative with Midwestern University.  Listen as we discuss the topics that interested her as a young student and how this impacted her career. From dementia to fall risk, to prevention techniques and strategies to maintain mobility and independence we discuss how all these important topics are covered in multi-disciplinary ways. The Walk with a Doc program helps foster relationships for patients and hopes to “inspire communities through movement and conversation! With an aim to make health and happiness accessible to everyone, walk with a dock offers free walking programs in communities around the world led by local doctors, healthcare providers, or medical students. These ongoing events allow participants to safely walk, parentheses or role parentheses, learn about current health, topics, and meet new people.” Tune in as we discuss the Midwestern University first “Walk with a Doc” Event on the Glendale campus hosted by Dean's Chat co-host Dr. Richey! The event was a success with community, student, and faculty engagement on the topic of Fall Risk Reduction. We started the event with a welcome chat about the importance of activity/movement and its impact on fall risk reduction. In podiatry, our goal is focus on pain reduction and improvement of function specifically as it relates to the foot and ankle and lower extremity, so that our patients can maintain an active healthy lifestyle with the highest quality of life and maintain their independence. Falls are a significant problem in America. It is estimated that every second an older adult falls; One quarter of adults over 65 will hall at home and half won't tell their healthcare provider.  This leads to roughly 36 million falls, which account for ~8 million injuries contributing to 3 million Emergency Room visits and roughly 950,000 hospitalizations. What is truly alarming is that of these 950,000 hospitalizations, around 32,000 patients will die. While these are scary statistics, we focused our event on the empowerment that FALLS ARE PREVENTABLE!  There has been a lot of research around falls and fall risk prevention. We focused our discussion on the CDC's STEADI approach to fall risk reduction which includes “screening, assessing and intervening.” The STEADI approach has been clinically shown to reduce fall risk by 20%.  We distributed information to the participants about this method and discussed 3 key questions as we walked through campus. “Have you fallen in the past year?” “Do you feel unsteady when standing or walking?” “Do you worry about falling?” This helped spark conversation amongst the participants including our student “future doctors” about the importance of asking these 3 simple questions to normalize the discussion about fall risk. We hope you enjoy! https://walkwithadoc.org/ https://www.midwestern.edu/academics/degrees-programs/college-graduate-studies/master-arts-biomedical-sciences www.apma.org www.stepintopodiatry.com www.explorepodmed.org

This podcast is predicated on the belief that if we all work together, we can still lay the foundations for a future we'd be proud to leave as our legacy.  And it's becoming increasingly obvious that this is now urgent; that we need to let go of the assumptions we'd made about career paths or future constructs and give ourselves wholeheartedly to the process of making it through. Five years ago when we began, it was possible to imagine that the world might stabilise with a vestige of the old system as a scaffold for the new.  That assumption is growing increasingly ragged. At the same time, it's becoming increasingly obvious, at least to me, that the shifts we need to be in the world are primarily inner; that the truly urgent work is in healing both our own and the global human psyches, that we need urgently to remember how to connect with the web of life so that we can ask it 'What do you want of me?' and respond to the answers in real time. That we need, in short. to evolve. But we need mentors and guides along the way. It is possible that we could perhaps each carve out our own route, but part of being human is sharing best practice, is having elders and mentors who open the doors of possibility for those who strive to walk the ways of healing. And this week's guest is one of those elders and mentors; he's a trailblazer of the most incandescent kind. Professor Christopher Bache is professor emeritus in the department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Youngstown State University, adjunct faculty at the California Institute of Integral Studies, Emeritus Fellow at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and on the Advisory Council of Grof Legacy Training.  He grew up in a Catholic household in the southern US and spent 4 years at a seminary training to be a priest before deciding this wasn't the path for him.  Moving into academia, he took degrees in the US and at Cambridge and finally a PhD by the end of which he had concluded that, 'using language derived from finite existence to describe an infinite God was like shining flashlights at the stars.'  He duly finished graduate school as 'a deeply convinced agnostic with a strong atheistic bent' and went on to teach the philosophy of religion as an academic study. So far, so academically straight.  He took a post teaching at Youngstown University in Ohio - and then he read Ian Stevenson on reincarnation and Stanislav Grof's work on LSD.  And 45 years later, I read his book, 'Diamonds from Heaven: LSD and the Mind of the Universe' and realised that here was someone who had walked with the Heart Mind of the Universe.  Here is someone who has taken himself to the edge of being, in order to understand the process.  As you'll hear, over the course of 20 years, he took 73 truly heroic doses of LSD in very carefully controlled conditions and then, over the past 20 years, he has reflected deeply on the results.  I'll let him tell his story: it's truly remarkable.  And what he brings to us is visions of how humanity could be: it's not guaranteed - but it's the opening to a door of possibility where every one of us can play a part, where, as he says, if we can align ourselves with the needs of the living planet, find out what's ours to do and devote ourselves to doing it, we have no idea what might arise. For many of us, this feels like a true dark night of the soul. So I offer this conversation as a ray of potential, that out of this immense pressure, might arise the conscious evolution of humanity: if we can all find ways to be the change.  Chris Bache website https://chrisbache.com/ABOUTChris Books https://chrisbache.com/BOOKS-1New Extended Edition of The Living Classroom https://sunypress.edu/Books/T/The-Living-Classroom-Second-EditionStanislav Grof (a website devoted to him and his works) https://www.stangrof.com/Bill Barnard Liquid Light Book https://liquidlightbook.com/Soul Centered Healing https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/soul-centered-healing-a-psychologist-s-extraordinary-journey-into-the-realms-of-sub-personalities-spirits-and-past-lives-ed-d-thomas-zinser/310221?ean=9780983429401

Ken Buck Steps Down Prior to Term End

This week, yet another prominent figure from the Republican party has decided to step down earlier than expected from his position in the House, a decision that could potentially impact the thin GOP majority that currently exists in the lower chamber. Representative Ken Buck of Colorado, who previously declared his intention not to pursue re-election this year, made no specific mention of the reasoning behind his decision to leave his post prior to the end of his ongoing term, set to conclude in January 2025. In a heartfelt statement, Buck expressed: 'I've had the privilege of fulfilling my duty to the citizens of Colorado's 4th District in Congress for nearly a decade. Their unwavering support and motivation over these years have been humbling.' He continued, 'I wish to declare that my service in Congress will conclude by the close of the following week. I eagerly anticipate remaining engaged in our nation's political discourse, along with embracing more family time and opportunities to immerse myself in Colorado's cultural environment.' Buck did, however, provide further clarity when speaking to the press, referring to the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, which is heavily shaped around allegations of corruption. He lamented the state of affairs, saying, 'We have sensationalized impeachment, turning it into a buzzword fit for the social media era, rather than respecting it as the solemn constitutional instrument it is. This place is not as I remember, and I've concluded that it's time to shift my focus elsewhere.' Following Buck's unexpected announcement, the prediction of a special election to appoint a successor to serve out the remaining tenure of his term has slowly begun stirring excitement, although there's an absence of official declarations so far. Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado, who currently represents the state's 3rd Congressional District, is believed to be amongst those jockeying for a place in the contest to secure the 4th Congressional District's seat for the term beginning next year. Buck's decision to leave office means that the Republicans will now have 218 members whilst the Democrats are at 213. The ability of the GOP to lead is still precariously hinged on the fact that they can only afford to lose two votes on issues that strictly follow party-lines, given full member attendance. Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his surprise at Buck's decision, hinting towards an upcoming conversation with him. The 435-member chamber has three vacant seats at the moment, thanks to a reshuffle that saw the vacancy left by the expulsion of Representative George Santos filled by Democrat Tom Suozzi through a special election last month. After losing his position as the Speaker in October, Representative Kevin McCarthy from California chose to step away from Congress at the year's end. As a result of McCarthy's exit, California has scheduled a primary for March 19 and, if no candidate manages to garner at least 50% of the votes, a general election will take place on May 21. This will determine who will serve out the remainder of McCarthy's term. Vince Fong, a top contender who has the backing of McCarthy, managed to secure a lead spot in the top-two primary competition for the upcoming term, earning his place on the November ballot. At the beginning of this week, additional progress inside the House was blurry at best, with no clear direction on who else would be moving forward. Another significant exit comes from Ohio Representative Bill Johnson, who in January resigned from his position as a legislator to assume the role of president at Youngstown State University. With Johnson's departure, Ohio is proceeding with a special election primary for the now-vacant seat on March 19, followed by a general election scheduled for June 11. From the Democratic side, there was another significant shift when the Buffalo-area Representative Brian Higgins relinquished his position in Congress in February to be appointed as president and Chief Executive Officer of Shea's Performing Arts Center. The date for the special election to secure Higgins' spot for the remaining term length has been scheduled for April 30. The unexpected exit from Representative Buck has added to the ongoing dynamism of the current political landscape. The people of Colorado, and indeed the nation, wait to see what will transpire in the forthcoming months. These developments, significant as they are, contribute to the dynamic narrative of American politics. It exemplifies how the leadership's landscape can be reshaped overnight with unforeseen departures and new entrants. However, every closure brings the promise of a new beginning, signaling that the stage is set for an exciting era of politics. While the uncertainties continue to hover around the future political scenario, it is certain that the American political discourse remains vibrant and energetic. Additionally, lawmakers' departures present new opportunities for forward-thinking candidates to step up and provide fresh perspectives that align with their constituents' values. The departure of established figures like Buck and others not only heralds the end of an era but also sets into motion the beginnings of the next. And within these changes, the hope persists that the successors will uphold the legacy of their predecessors while navigating the country forward, embodying the essence of American resilience. The reshuffling of seats and the anticipation of fresh faces in Congress can be viewed as a sign of the pulsating political dynamics currently at play. With every exit comes a potential pathway for new ideas, fresh perspectives, and transformative leadership that could shape the future political landscape. While some may view these changes with trepidation, others will see them as a thrilling political evolution. As we witness the ebb and flow in the political arena, let's remind ourselves that change, after all, is the only constant. And as one part of our political history ends with these departures, an exciting chapter starts afresh. The focus now shifts to the promising successors, their actions, and the ensuing impacts on the future governance of this great nation. In this episode of the Psychedelic Therapy Frontiers podcast, Dr. Steve Thayer and Dr. Reid Robison are joined by Dr. Christopher Bache, PhD. Chris is professor emeritus in the department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Youngstown State University, adjunct faculty at the California Institute of Integral Studies, Emeritus Fellow at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and on the Advisory Council of Grof Legacy Training. He's the author of several books, but the one that prompted this interview is LSD and the Mind of the Universe—an account of what Chris experienced and learned from 73 high-dose LSD journeys that he embarked on over the course of 20 years. In today's conversation they explore Chris's LSD session protocol, the difference between using psychedelics for cosmological exploration vs spiritual enlightenment or psychiatric healing, how Chris processed and integrated his very intense experiences, what he learned about reincarnation, evolution at the collective and individual levels, what humans need to do to survive mounting existential threats, what he means by “diamond luminosity” and “diamond soul”, and much more.Learn more about our podcast at https://numinus.com/podcast/Learn more about psychedelic therapy training opportunities at https://numinus.com/our-training-selection/Learn more about our clinical trials at https://numinus.com/research/ Learn more about Numinus at https://numinus.com/Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drstevethayer/https://www.instagram.com/innerspacedoctor/https://www.instagram.com/numinushealth/

The Buckeyes' 2023 season is underway. Although it began in underwhelming fashion, it's the first outing, on the road, with a new quarterback and a mostly new offensive line. It was never going to look crisp right out of the box. Far be it from us to tell you not to panic — you may do so if you wish; that's your prerogative — but we simply have more things we'll be keeping an eye on as the season moves forward. We broke down Ohio State's 20-point win at Bloomington, including the key plays, players, and mistakes, and checked back on our score predictions and picks to click to see how we did. It was the first game for everyone, so we haven't quite zeroed in on this team yet. Joel Whetzel from The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle was our guest this week. He popped on with us to give us the scoop on Ohio State's opponent this Saturday, the Penguins of Youngstown State University. What are the Penguins good and bad at? Who are the players to watch? What style can we expect? These questions get answered expertly by Joel and we appreciate his time. Finally, we looked ahead to Saturday and came up with our score predictions and our picks to click for this Saturday's matchup. Will the Penguins get as many stops on defense as the Hoosiers did? That's not what we're expecting. We have similar ideas to how this game will unfold to what our guest described. We'll be back next week to dissect Ohio State's home opener against Youngstown State and look ahead to a matchup with Western Kentucky. In fact, we'll be here with you every week from now until the end of the 2023 Ohio State football season. We'd love to hear from you, so please reach out with your feedback and questions below in the comments section or send us an email.
