Aurora Leon-Conde, along with her partner Joaquin, joined Jess and BJ to debrief her recent finish of the Tahoe 200. The journey was not without massive resistance, all of which Aurora overcame in the end using the power of her mind. Aurora is a pillar of strength and a long-time member of Team YogiTriathlete. She has completed many epic feats throughout the year and serves as a leader in the YT Community for doing hard things with grace. Aurora discovered running while studying medicine in New York, eventually leading her to run the NYC marathon in 2011. Through endurance sports, she realized that she was capable of accessing parts of her mind that were dormant in regular life. She became fascinated by this and started running longer distances to see what else she could access. Her most recent endeavor, and the catalyst for finally having her on the show, was her successful finish of the Tahoe 200. We're fired up to have ultrarunner Jake Jackson with us for this episode following his maiden voyage of Cocodona 250, although, in the weeks following, Jake was already on the top of the podium at the Nanny Goat 12-hour and at the time of this recording, days away from the San Diego 100. Jake is a dad of three, husband, full-time professional with UPS, and former smoker-partier who realized alongside his wife that they needed to adopt a healthier lifestyle. So they traded their cigarettes for running shoes. After road running and finding success as a fast runner, Jake turned to the trails. His ultra sign-up CV is long, reporting his first trail race in October of 2014, although he had already been lacing up his shoes for several years at that point. Jake has twice represented Team USA in the 24-hour World Championships, been last man standing at a last-man-standing race, taken wins and stood on the podium countless times, grinded away miles and managed to get it all in despite working full-time, being a dad, and giving space to his wife, Missy, to hit the trails and get in her training. He's credited with a reputation for positivity and lifting others up along the way, and we are certain you are going to love his laid-back, no-excuses demeanor. Like many of you, the YogiTriathlete team was glued to this year's coverage of the Cocodona 250, and today, you get to hear all about it from first-time finisher Dandelion Dullvio-Scott. Chris Thornley, the founder of Squirrel's Nut Butter, introduced hosts Jess and BJ to Dandelion, their fellow SNB Adventure Teammate, after her grueling 105:28:27 journey from Black City Canyon to downtown Flagstaff. This point-to-point foot race, the Cocodona 250, is not for the faint of heart, with over 40,000 feet of vertical gain and 34,000 feet of loss over the 250 miles. It culminates in a challenging climb up Mt. Elden before a final descent into town to the finish line. From her mountaineering roots, Dandelion stepped into trail racing in 2018 with her first fast-pack event and has accumulated countless miles and finishes over the years, but Cocodona was her first race of the 200-mile flavor. Jess and BJ sit down with triathlete Sebastian Radilla, who recently captured the overall win at the now-infamous Ironman 70.3 Morro Bay. This year's race will go down in triathlon history as having some of the most chaotic conditions, which resulted in DNF rates close to 400. Most of these occurred during the swim due to a current that we heard was about 5 knots. The conversion is 1.15 miles per hour x 5—almost 6 miles per hour, which is faster than most people can swim. Sebastian, who swam competitively throughout high school and has continued to work on his swim through triathlon, came out of the water first in his age group and then moved through the field to capture the W on the day. Six years ago, Hannah Hoetmer had zero climbing experience and could barely run a mile. But here she is now, a professional alpinist for The North Face. We're thrilled to welcome professional triathlete turned professional trail runner Eli Hemming to the show. Jess and BJ followed Eli's career through Olympic distance draft-legal racing on the world stage until he chose to step away from his career as a professional triathlete. Despite being ranked #1 in the U.S. because of his multiple World Cup podiums, Eli's happiness factor was falling, and he could no longer ignore that it was time for a radical change. When he hit the trail running scene in 2021, he immediately found success qualifying for the 2022 Mountain Running Championships, and when he crossed over from sub-ultra to ultra-distance racing with a 2nd at the Way Too Cool. He finished that year with several podiums but did not claim victory at a race until 2023, a year of continued improvements and highlights like placing 2nd at the Marathon Du Mont Blanc. Since the calendar turned to 2024, he's been on a winning streak; it's almost as if the trails have been patiently awaiting his arrival. Jess and BJ caught up with Eli less than a week after he took the win at the Big Alta 50k by over 20 minutes in a cool 3:38:33, an incredible feat considering this race came on the heels of crushing his competition at the Black Canyon 60k just two weeks prior, where he broke the tape by 30 minutes over 2nd place in 4:06:39. Coaches Jess and Melissa are back with the third and final episode in their Women's Wellness Series. Jess, Mindset and Wellness coach for YogiTriathlete, has practiced and educated others on the ancient sciences of yoga (the mind) and ayurveda (optimal health) for decades. Professional triathlete Matti Weitz is our guest today, and he is living the example of what it looks like to answer a calling. Thriving as an age group triathlete, Matti was also successful in business as a Sports Physiotherapy; he was on route to building an empire, and by all means, society would say he should have continued toward the professional and financial success that was inevitable, but that's not what he did. As his passion for triathlon was building, his fulfillment in his profession was falling, and he couldn't help but wonder what life would look like if we put 100% of his focus into his sport. Belgium Professional Triathlete Claire Michel is back on the show! Claire first launched into the YogiTriathlete community in 2018, and in that episode, the three of them go into detail about Claire's backstory and much about her resilient mindset. Joanne Murphy is among the most sought-after race day announcers worldwide, but she is so much more than her beautiful brogue articulation. Dr. Dave is rounding out his three-peat performance on the YTP, having been the star of episode 166 back in 2019, then alongside his incredible wife, Dr. Lindsay, in 2020 for episode 238, both of these conversations diving deep under the surface chatter and into meaningful topics for performance and life. Jess and BJ sit down for this episode with Harita Davies, who completed her fourth 3100-mile Self-Transcendence foot race in New York after 51 days, 16 hours, 42 minutes, and 11 seconds. The race started on August 30th and finished on October 20th - can you imagine running that many days straight? Founded in 1997 by Sri Chinmoy, the self-transcendence event is the world's longest-certified race, although the course itself may surprise you. Sri Chinmoy was an Indian spiritual leader who moved to New York City in 1964 to teach meditation and spirituality. He lived a life dedicated to serving humanity, and he was also an athlete who valued athletics as an essential piece of a balanced spiritual life. He created the Sri Chinmoy marathon team, which has grown into athletes and racing events all over the world. This episode was recorded at the Sri Chinmoy Center in San Diego after Jess, BJ, and Harita shared a beautiful lunch at Jyoti-Bihanga, the oldest vegetarian restaurant in San Diego and a part of the center. Jess and BJ welcome ultrarunner and recent Moab 240 victor Jesse Haynes to the show. Jess and BJ welcome professional triathlete and flight attendant Svenja Thoes to the show today. Svenja never thought or lived like she would race the best of the best on the big island, but that is precisely what she did a few weeks ago. Today, the three of them unpack her experience, unlikely backstory, and vision of the future. After winning a contest at work, she was given entry into Ironman 70.3 Mallorca. At the time, she didn't swim, she didn't bike, and sometimes she ran with her dog. But when race day showed up, so did Svenja. She claimed 2nd in her age group that day and qualified for the 70.3 World Championship, where she went on to win her age group. Over a decade later and a recent top 20 finish at the big dance on the big island, we can safely assume this woman was meant for triathlon. Alec Merlino is living a big life, pursuing his dreams, exploring opportunities, pushing his limits in endurance sports, and figuring it out as he goes along. Many years ago, 2009 to be exact, YogiTriathlete founders BJ and Jess took the double win at a local triathlon in Boulder, CO taking home the grand prize of two big burritos. Since that day, every time they both take the win, they refer to it as the "Big Burrito Win" and they almost had another just a few weeks ago at the Mission Bay Triathlon in San Diego. However, BJ's first-place ranking quickly moved to second place as the results rolled in, and then was left to watch how his mind wanted to cling to the top step of the podium. Oh, the work of taming the mind is never done but it assuredly does become easier to let things go along the way. This episode is a great reminder to all triathletes and the triathlon-curious that swim, bike, run is a triathlon at any distance. On this particular weekend, Team YogiTriathlete athletes spanned the distances from the Ironman World Championship full distance of 140.6 to the mini kids sprint in the birthplace of triathlon. Time and again, year after year, we continue to hear the unfolding of the amazing lives shared on this show, and it's always so cool when we connect with a YT listener who is finding great purpose in life and willing to share. Jayme Linker reached out a few weeks ago to introduce herself, which left our jaws on the ground. This woman is living off the front of adventure and fueling it with a purpose of service and an attitude of health and well-being for all, including herself. Jayme has been an extreme adventure athlete for over a decade, starting in Obstacle Course Racing and now a world record holder as an ocean rower. Jayme is the 1st US female to row both the Atlantic and Mid-Pacific Oceans and is working towards the next record-breaking project for the summer of 2024. Her team will become the first to embark on a circumnavigation attempt of all three oceans, starting with the Indian Ocean, then the Atlantic Ocean, and ending with the Pacific Ocean. Jayme and her teammate Owen will row for several causes, including Eating Disorder Awareness, which is close to Jayme's heart and life experience. We know that pain transmuted is fuel for a purposeful life that can serve many, and by utilizing her own battle with eating disorders, Jayme is committed to facing her fears so that others may benefit. Lawrence Van Lingen and Erin Carson have risen to legendary status in the world of endurance sports by following their curiosity and not worrying too much about what the mainstream says about mobility and strength for athletes. Today, we are thrilled to welcome professional ultra trail runner and Ironman triathlete Lucy Bartholomew to the show. Lucy has talked so openly about the high highs and the low lows of doing what she is called to in this life, and yet she continually persists to, as she says, uplevel to a new devil. At age 27, Lucy is already a trail running veteran with course records, podium finishes, and many lessons along the way. Lucy has crossed the finish line at the most significant events in the sport, like the Tarawera Ultramarathon, Western States, and, most recently, Ultra Trail Du'Mont Blanc, where she placed 10th. She has also embarked on solo adventures that have taken her to the limit, like the 231 K trek along the Larapinta Trail in Australia's Northern Territory. Salomon Running created a fantastic film, Running Out, which documents this incredible feat. But the piece that caught our attention was last year when Lucy crossed the finish line at Ironman Western Australia and qualified for the Ironman World Championship, which takes place in Kona, Hawaii, in just a few weeks. Trail and triathlon, they said it couldn't happen, and now it is all the time. We are thrilled to have Vuori and Athletic Brewing athlete Jason Hardrath back on the show to smack down the successes and challenges of his latest FKT project. At the beginning of August, Jason smashed the previous record of 60 days with his completion of the Rocky Mountain Grand Slam in less than 40 days. This project included 122 peaks, 698 miles, and 318,799 feet of elevation gain; an endeavor equivalent to summiting Mt. Everest from sea level 11 times. We first had Jason on the show in July of 2022 to celebrate his conquering of Washington state's Bulgers List and his 100th FKT, Have a listen; it's episode 322. Life is an ever-changing ocean of motion, and we may have many iterations of ourselves throughout our lives, so I think purpose can take on many looks and feels. We can have a sense of purpose throughout our day as we serve others or achieve our goals; we can pay attention to life with purpose so that we are more present in our day-to-day or in the case of today's guest, we can feel an innate draw to something and follow that calling, and sometimes that becomes our way of life. Even though Bryan Mineo was raised 250 miles away from the nearest ocean, he felt a love for the ocean from as early as he can remember. He dreamt about swimming in its waters and spending time on its shores but also a distance between what was calling him and his physical surroundings. He bridged the gap as best he could with pool swimming, then open water swimming in lakes, and eventually moving to Southern California's Pacific coast and, over time, into the purpose that he lives today, bridging the gap for people between living on land and the great element of water. Bryan is the founder of The Swim Mechanic and One with the Ocean, which is centered around improving humans' relationship with the ocean. If you have been following our stories, you know we've been joining the Sunday morning open-water workouts at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. They are incredible training sessions; they are so much fun and also relevant to improving triathlete skills. Admittedly, we knew about Bryan and his incredible organization, but joining the group took us a few years. Why? Let's start this post with massive namastes, and congrats to Jason for claiming the 2nd podium spot at the PTO US Open in Milwaukee, WI, this past weekend and putting down an insane run split over his competitors. Well done. We caught up with Jason at the beginning of his taper for this race, and he admits to feeling top-notch. As of July 31st, Jason is ranked 16th in the world and 3rd in the US according to the Professional Triathletes Organization, and if he keeps racing like he did last weekend, we're sure to see him climbing those ranks steadily. Jason started his triathlon career at sixteen and acquired a high level of mental toughness early on as his training consisted of one-speed, full gas. Jason continued to race through college, where he studied kinesiology and then headed to Boulder to pursue a triathlon career. And that leaves us where we stand now, an ever-emerging star in the sport of triathlon and an absolute threat to all his competitors on the run. We are so grateful to have shared this conversation with Jason and loved his energy and take on mindset.
