This week we have true F1 royalty joining us. Jo Ramirez began his career working for some great car brands including, Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini. In motorsport he worked alongside Dan Gurney, Ken Tyrell, Emerson Fittipaldi and had his career kick-started by none other than Juan Manuel Fangio.Jo was coordinator of the McLaren Formula One team, including during the infamous Prost–Senna rivalry of the late-1980s. But also worked with David Coulthar, Mike Häkkinen and of course, Ron Dennis. Today, Jo Ramirez has retired to enjoy his love of Jaguars and is an honorary member of the JEC in Andalucia.
Jo Ramirez. He may not be a household name, but Jo Ramirez is one of those people who has seen it all and worked with them all. He broke into F1 in the 1960s, working with emerging superstar Ricardo Rodriguez. His Mexican countryman sadly perished before his star had truly emerged, but by then Ramirez was set on a path that would eventually see him work with Jackie Stewart at Tyrrell, Emerson Fittipaldi at Copersucar, and - most famously - with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost at McLaren in the midst of their bitter rivalry. This week on Beyond The Grid, Ramirez - a former mechanic, team manager and co-ordinator - lifts the lid of his four decades in motor racing’s premier category, from his early years working alongside a young Ron Dennis and Dan Gurney, to his latter years alongside Mika Hakkinen.

On December 5, Motor Sport hosted a special readers' evening with Sir Jackie Stewart OBE. Joining the three-time champion at the Landmark Hotel in Marylebone were Nigel Roebuck and Damien Smith, as well as former Tyrrell and McLaren man Jo Ramirez. After dinner, the four sat down for a question and answer session which you can hear below. Sir Jackie shared his thoughts on some of his contemporaries plus a few more modern drivers, and gave an insight into his trademark smooth driving style. We also used the night to launch our annual Hall of Fame event along with our auction for the Grand Prix Mechanics Charitable Trust. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Motor Sport hosted a special evening in London on June 6 as a group of our enthusiastic readers joined us for a private viewing of the stunning new Ayrton Senna film. We were honoured to be joined by the movie’s producer Manish Pandey and former McLaren team coordinator Jo Ramirez, the man who somehow managed to remain friends with both Senna and Alain Prost during their incendiary two years as team-mates in 1988-89. This is the full, unedited, recording of the open discussion after the film which included Jo, Manish, our editor-in-chief Nigel Roebuck and features editor Rob Widdows. We apologise for the sound – it was recorded live! Do let us know your thoughts and keep checking the website for upcoming readers' evenings. We'll be doing plenty more.
