THIS WEEK'S NASIR HAMEED CORNER WE HAVE: ZACK BROWN before he joined McLaren and BOB BONDURANT… AND YES….OUR BONUS IS HIRO MATSUSHITA OF FORMULA 1 AND CHAMP CAR FAME! Bob Bondurant was one of America's most influential racing figures — a driver who succeeded on the world's greatest circuits, competed for legendary teams including Shelby American, Ferrari, and Eagle, and ultimately shaped generations of racers through education. Rising from the fiercely competitive Southern California road racing scene of the 1950s, Bondurant achieved significant success on both sides of the Atlantic and became a pivotal ambassador for American road racing. His enduring legacy lives on through the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, which trained hundreds of thousands of drivers — from future professionals to Hollywood royalty. Career, Bondurant was born in Evanston, Illinois, but his competitive instincts emerged early and loudly. As a teenager, he raced Indian motorcycles on dirt ovals, learning car control the hard way. By 1956, he shifted his focus to sports cars, initially racing a Morgan, and soon made his mark by winning the West Coast “B” Production Championship in a Chevrolet Corvette, claiming an extraordinary 18 victories in 20 races. His growing reputation caught the attention of Santa Barbara Chevrolet dealer Shelly Washburn, who hired Bondurant in 1961 to drive his #614 1959 Corvette. Over the next several seasons, Bondurant became a dominant force on the West Coast. His on-track rivalry with David McDonald produced some of the era's most memorable Corvette battles. At the 1962 L.A. Times Grand Prix, Bondurant debuted Washburn's new 1963 Corvette Z06 Stingray, and between 1961 and 1963, he won an astonishing 30 of 32 races in Washburn's Corvettes. Shelby, Europe, and international success In 1963, Bondurant joined Carroll Shelby's Ford Cobra team, immediately delivering results. He won his first race for Shelby at Continental Divide Raceway in Colorado, followed by an overall GT victory at the L.A. Times Grand Prix at Riverside later that year. The following season propelled him onto the global stage. After finishing second in GT at Sebring, Bondurant spent 1964 racing in Europe, campaigning Shelby's new 289 FIA Cobras at iconic events including the Targa Florio, Spa-Francorchamps, and the Nürburgring. His most celebrated triumph came at the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he and Dan Gurney won the GT class in the revolutionary Cobra Daytona Coupé. Bondurant reached the peak of his international racing career in 1965, when he played a key role in Shelby American and Ford winning the FIA Manufacturers' World Championship. He won seven of ten races, defeating the class-dominant Ferrari 250 GTOs across Europe. That same year, Bondurant expanded his résumé further, driving a works Ferrari Formula One car at the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, followed by a start in a Lotus 33 for Reg Parnell at the Mexican Grand Prix. Formula One, film, and defining moments In 1966, Bondurant's expertise took him beyond the racetrack. He served as technical consultant for John Frankenheimer's film Grand Prix and personally trained lead actor James Garner to drive Formula cars for the movie's racing scenes. That same year, Bondurant was involved in one of the most consequential moments in motorsport safety history. Alongside Graham Hill, he helped extract Jackie Stewart from his fuel-soaked wreck during the 1966 Belgian Grand Prix — an incident that directly inspired Stewart's later campaign for improved safety standards. Bondurant also competed in five Formula One Grands Prix with Team Chamaco Collect, driving BRMs and achieving an impressive fourth-place finish at Monaco. He rounded out his Formula One involvement in North America with two races driving an Eagle for Dan Gurney's Anglo American Racers. The crash that changed everything In 1967, Bondurant competed in the Can-Am series and returned to Le Mans in a Corvette L88 Coupé, leading the GT class until a wrist pin failure ended his race in the early morning hours. Later that year, disaster struck at Watkins Glen. While driving a McLaren, a steering arm failed at approximately 150 mph approaching the Loop-Chute section (today's Turn 5). The car flipped eight times, leaving Bondurant with severe injuries to his ribs, legs, feet, and most critically, his back. Doctors warned he might never walk again. Bondurant refused to accept that verdict. Through determination and relentless rehabilitation, he recovered — and in the process, envisioned a new chapter. Miami and Montreal to host FIA Formula 2 Championship Rounds in 2026 FIA Formula 2 announce that Miami and Montreal will host Rounds 2 and 3 of the 2026 calendar, alongside Formula 1 – the first time the Championship will race in North America. The opportunity for Miami and Montreal to join the F2 calendar has come about following the news that the Sakhir and Jeddah Rounds will not take place in April. The FIA Formula 2 championship will go to Miami, USA, on May 1-3 for what will be the second Round of the 2026 season, followed by Montreal, Canada on May 22-24, as Round 3, before returning to Europe, starting with Monte-Carlo, Monaco, on June 04-07. Stefano Domenicali, President & CEO of Formula 1, said: “While it has not been possible to go ahead with the two races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia this month, and we look forward to being back with our passionate fans there as soon as possible, it is great news for our fans, the drivers and the teams that Formula 2 will be racing in Miami and Montreal. Bruno and the whole F2 family have done a great job, working closely with us, the FIA, and the Miami and Montreal promoters, to ensure we limit the gap in racing for the championship this season and I want to thank them for making this possible. It is going to be fantastic to restart the racing in a few weeks' time and to have F2 alongside Formula 1 as we return to the US for the first time this season.” Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA President, said: “Following the necessary changes to the calendar at the start of the season, the addition of these new rounds ensures the FIA Formula 2 Championship remains strong and balanced, and able to deliver for our teams, drivers and fans. Bringing the championship to North America via Miami and Montreal for the first time marks an important step in its continued global growth, strengthening the pathway alongside Formula One and connecting with new audiences. I thank all those who worked tirelessly to make these rounds possible. “Our thoughts remain with all those affected by the ongoing events in the Middle East and we continue to hope for a swift return to stability. We look forward to racing in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia very soon.” Bruno Michel, FIA Formula 2 CEO, said: “We always love to race in Sakhir and Jeddah, and we wish them well and look forward to returning to both as soon as circumstances allow. We are now going to Miami and Montreal for the second and third rounds of the 2026 season, respectively. I would like to thank Stefano Domenicali and Formula 1 for their support in making this possible, and also the FIA, the promoters of the Miami and Canadian Grands Prix, and of course my team, who have worked hard to put in place two new Rounds in such a short amount of time. It was not an easy thing to do, but bringing F2 to North America for the first time is really fantastic. It's something we have been wanting to do for a long time, and it enables us to ensure we're back racing as quickly as possible. It will be a great new challenge for our teams and our drivers, who have all welcomed the news with enthusiasm. I am certain that the quality of racing will bring a lot of excitement to the fans and to everyone attending both Grands Prix.” Revised 2026 FIA Formula 2 Championship Calendar Date Venue 06-08 March Melbourne, Australia 01-03 May Miami, USA* 22-24 May Montreal, Canada* 04-07 June Monte-Carlo, Monaco 12-14 June Barcelona, Spain 26-28 June Spielberg, Austria 03-05 July Silverstone, Great Britain 17-19 July Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium 24-26 July Budapest, Hungary 04-06 September Monza, Italy 11-13 September Madrid, Spain** 24-26 September Baku, Azerbaijan 27-29 November Lusail, Qatar 04-06 December Yas Island, UAE ASTON MARTIN ARAMCO FORMULA ONE™ TEAM EXPANDS DRIVER ACADEMY LINE-UP, WELCOMING AVA LAWRENCE & ROLAND NAGY AMRTC, UK, 9 April 2026: The Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team is pleased to announce the expansion of its Driver Academy, welcoming DPK Racing karters Ava Lawrence and Roland Nagy to the programme. It helps them develop, learn and grow, while providing the opportunities needed to succeed. The programme focuses on building long-term partnerships and actively scouting the brightest young talent across all levels of motorsport. At just 11 years old, Australian born Ava Lawrence has established herself as a rising force in international karting. Competing across Rotax, IAME and FIA-aligned categories, she has claimed multiple podium finishes and broken new ground as the first female MENA Cup Champion, the first female winner of a Mini race in ROK Cup Italy, and the first female driver to reach the podium in the Mini class of the Champions of the Future Academy. Ava, who races under an Emirati licence, was recently selected to represent F1 ACADEMY DISCOVER YOUR DRIVE in this year's British Champions of the Future Academy (COTFA) Programme having also been chosen to represent the initiative over the previous two seasons in the international series. 13-year-old Roland Nagy has emerged as a standout competitor in the premier OK-Junior category, making his mark on the international karting scene. Roland, from Hungary, is a regular contender in the sport's most prestigious series, including the FIA Karting European Championship and the WSK Super Master Series. He has demonstrated his exceptional race craft and speed, notably securing heat victory at the opening round of the Champions of the Future Euro Series at La Conca. Roland frequently qualifies for highly competitive finals, marking him as one of the most promising young Hungarian talents as he continues his progression toward the higher echelons of professional motorsport. The Aston Martin Aramco Driver Academy's strategic partnership with DPK Racing, the official team of FA Alonso Kart chassis, provides access to a combined wealth of karting expertise and a global network, including that of Fernando Alonso. This collaboration strengthens the Academy's ability to identify and nurture promising young talent from the earliest stages of their motorsport careers, and reflects the trust placed in the team's karting expertise to help identify and develop these young drivers as they progress through the ranks. Nuno Pinto, Racing Director, Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team Driver Academy: “Bringing in talent at a junior level is an important part of our strategy, and Ava and Roland are excellent examples of the calibre of young driver that we want to bring in the programme. Both drivers have already shown impressive potential on the international stage, with strong performances in highly competitive categories. Having the opportunity to contribute to a driver's development from such an early stage is incredibly important, allowing us to help shape their progression both on and off the track as they continue to grow in the sport.” Ava Lawrence, Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team Driver Academy: "I'm really excited to join the Aston Martin Aramco Driver Academy. It's going to be such a huge step to help me improve my driving and become even better on track. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on the team and learning from them. “Getting to visit the AMR Technology Campus (AMRTC) for my announcement was so cool. My favourite part of the day was seeing the different materials they use on the Formula One cars and actually getting to touch parts of the car. It was so interesting to see how it's all made!” Roland Nagy, Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team Driver Academy: “I'm really pleased to be a part of the Aston Martin Aramco Driver Academy. The team will be giving me a lot of support, which will be really important for my career, and I'm excited to learn as much as I can from everyone I meet inside the team. “It was really cool to visit the AMRTC. I really liked how it looks, both outside and inside – it's very futuristic. My favourite part was seeing how the cars are made. It's amazing seeing Formula One cars up close and what they look like on the inside.” Ava and Roland join current Aston Martin Aramco Driver Academy members Mari Boya, competing in FIA Formula 2, and Mathilda Paatz, F1 ACADEMY driver.

Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi! Kaulig Racing crew chief Andrew Dickeson joins Davey Segal (8:55) as their cinderella run in the inaugural In-Season Challenge continues. He walks through what it was like for him atop the pit box as Ty Dillon moved Alex Bowman out of the way for a spot in the Final Four, how confidence and performance have gone hand in hand (and up) in the last month, the culture he's attempting to create on the No. 10 team, arriving at the track with a chip on their shoulder and why he believes in his driver. Dickeson, an Australian native, also dives into his background in motorsports (spoiler alert: he had none), how he got his hands dirty in Supercars, simultaneously working in racing, bartending and getting his engineering degree, the decision to pack up and move across the world to pursue a career in NASCAR, how he went about finding a job with race teams and his progression up the engineering ladder that eventually led him to becoming a crew chief. Plus, a hilarious story involving Richard Childress calling Dickeson while in Australia (and maybe a bit inebriated) asking him to become the full-time shot caller on the No. 10. Dickeson also explains the similarities between U.S. and Australian racing culture, why Marcos Ambrose deserves more credit for helping NASCAR's image down under, what it's like working at Kaulig Racing, expectations for the rest of the season and more. Davey also reviews another SVG dominant performance in Sonoma, previews the Monster Mile in Dover and Papa Segal pays homage to one of the best to ever strap in behind the wheel on road courses: Dan Gurney.
Chris Pook is the former travel agent who had the wild idea of staging a Formula One race through the city streets of Long Beach. Between himself, Dan Gurney, Jim Michaelian and a number of others who were critical in getting this event started, they all overcame numerous obstacles in trying to make his dream a reality. This iconic event will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on April 11-13, 2025. At the 2024 Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame ceremony (where he has also been inducted), he was gracious enough to spend some time with us and tell us about the challenges the event faced getting off the ground, some of the key moments that made it a success (including key people), and how it's endured all these years. In looking forward to this incredible 50-year milestone, there's nobody more qualified to talk about it than he is. Enjoy!

While he's not a car star to us all his movie The French Connection is one the most iconic of it's day. For many of us, he's the best part about dozens of movies that we have loved for over 50 years! From The French Connection to Hoosiers, The Replacements, Crimson Tide, even The Royal Tenenbaums, Gene's acting chops marked him as one of the best actors to ever grace the big screen. He'll be missed. As we learned doing research, Gene actually WAS a car guy and had done a considerable amount of racing. He followed in the footsteps of Paul Newman and fell in love with amateur/celebrity racing initially, trained at the Bob Bondurant school, and eventually became involved with Dan Gurney for celebrity and professional races with TOYOTA. We discussed Gene's awesome career in the episode and included a re-broadcast from The Kibbe and Finnegan Show where we had reviewed "The Replacements". This movie is the story we all want; a chance to live up to the potential of something that we loved from our youth and maybe came close to achieving, but for whatever reason failed at, or it fizzled out, or it just ended for reasons we couldn't control. Keanu is honestly pretty good as a south-paw quarterback and it's a great movie full of inspirational one-liners you'll love to quote. Daniel Sexton Gurney (1931-2018) was a Southern California Hot-Rodder who became one of the most successful racing drivers in the history of motorsport, with wins in Saloon Car, Sports Car, NASCAR, Indy Car and Formula One. Gurney raced for the Arciero Brothers, Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team, Ferrari, Brabham, BRM and Porsche before teaming up with Carroll Shelby to found All American Racers in 1964.Gurney was always seeking out men of motorsport at the top of their game: he collaborated with Colin Chapman of Lotus, engine maestro Harry Weslake, and the ambitious cadre at Ford Motor Company, who were intent on taking on the world's best.Gurney helped to pioneer the rear engine layout at the Indianapolis 500, spelling the end of Indy's Roadster Era in Champ Car racing, and AAR fielded the Gurney Eagle Formula One chassis for the first time in 1966. 1967 was a banner year for Gurney, winning the Belgian Grand Prix in the Eagle Mk1- the first Grand Prix win for an American constructor since 1921. He also won overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with his co-driver A.J. Foyt in the Ford GT 40 Mk IV.Gurney retired as a driver in 1970, but continued to operate All American Racers for the rest of his life, famously partnering with Toyota in IMSA-GT and CART. As a driver, Dan Gurney chalked up 63 victories over all motorsport categories, and All American Racers achieved 78 total wins as a constructor. His influence and contributions in the world of motor racing continue to inspire the next generation.SUPPORT THE POD:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/hpheritageSUPPORT OUR SPONSORS:http://modelcitizendiecast.comFIND US ON THE WEB:https://www.horsepowerheritage.comInstagram: @horsepowerheritageSupport the showSubscribe to the Horsepower Heritage YouTube channel for more great cars and motorcycles! https://www.youtube.com/@horsepowerheritage8030
Strap in, kids—it's time for another story from Jeff's past, and this one's a doozy. In 1967, future pro racer and INTC host Jeff Braun won a contest to visit the United States F1 Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. Jeff was nine years old. The trip blew his mind. Guaranteed in this ep: Our very own J.B. as a wee man! Quality hangs with Dan Gurney and Jack Brabham! Sam explaining why Sixties F1 was bonkers-deadly but great! Jeff swimming at the Glen Motor Inn with Gurney and Jim Clark and Graham "Mustache" Hill! A private garage tour! And more! This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We call this format “Jeff Tells a Story.” RELATED TRIVIA: So at one point, our boy hits the Watkins concession stands. He wants a burger. Being nine, he is not tall, can't see over the counter. Then, suddenly, someone lifts him up. He turns around—it's future F1 World Champion Jochen Rindt! Suited and booted, driving that weekend, three years before his death at Monza. “You jerk,” they'll shout, “that show title isn't relatable! Only the die-hards will understand! For pete's sake, man, think of the traffic analytics!” Who cares? I am Sam and I write these ep descriptions, and that title makes me happy. If you don't like it, hey, you probably aren't the kind of person to listen to a show about a “flap,” anyway. And: This is a show about a flap! It's also about two of the greatest American racers to have ever lived. The moment where two men of experience and wisdom grew frustrated. And how they stumbled onto an invention that changed aerodynamics forever. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. This episode is our monthly deep dive into an epic moment from racing history. Sam once rode in a Robinson R22. Jeff is a private pilot and about 1000 times cooler than Sam and Ross combined, so he probably taught his sons to autorotate in the womb or something. In this episode of the Off-Road Racer Podcast, I sit down with off-road racer, tour guide, and Hollywood stuntman Rich Minga. Rich had an unsuspecting start in off-roading, going on camping trips with his family in Baja. After getting hooked on Hot VWs Magazine, Rich started sweeping the floors at a buggy prep shop in El Cajon, and built his own Baja Bug at the young age of 15. Taking what he learned from How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, Rich would go on to help prep cars for Mark Stahl, Jim Guthrie, and Dan Gurney. After many years of prepping, and getting the occasional chance to drive, Rich would start his own race program, racing Baja in class 9 in 1986. Just one year later, Rich took the overall points championship. Because of his performance in racing, and all of the people he met in off-road, Rich got the opportunity to perform vehicle stunts in an episode of Baywatch. This led into a career as a stuntman in Hollywood, where Rich would use his experience in racing to perform stunts in dozens of films. Now, Rich is a guide and driving coach for Wide Open Baja, while still operating as a stuntman. Rich and I sit down to talk about his lifelong history in off-road, and more. I'm your host Matt Martelli, and this IS the Off-Road Racer Podcast.

The catch: We're the fans. (Bet you didn't see that coming.) “If you have the chance to make something beautiful,” Dan Gurney once said, “and you don't, well, what does that say about you?” This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. This episode's format is called "How I Got Here." It's a free-form dive into the people, places, moments, and machines that made us care about racing when we were young. In this case, that means the one and only Daniel Sexton Gurney—the legendary American driver and team owner who changed how we view optimism and the art of the possible. (Gurney's resume is a mile long, but among so much else, he remains the only American to win an F1 race in a car of his own construction.) Also: This one is just Sam and Jeff. Ross was busy doing something at tape time but didn't tell us what. Because Ross is Canadian, I now get to type the words, “He was obviously writing his poutine manifesto.” Related Trivia: No trivia this week. Sam writes these episode descriptions and his wife is currently in bed with strep throat, so he's a bit brain-dead from simultaneously working, taking care of a sick lady, and solo parenting two kids in grade school hold on a sec I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU, STOP EATING BEANS AND THEN SITTING ON YOUR SISTER'S HEAD, OKAY? Sorry, where were we? This episode was produced by Mike Perlman. ** Support It's Not the Car: Contribute on Patreon www.patreon.com/notthecar/ ** Topic suggestions, feedback, questions? Jeff Braun is a championship-winning race engineer. Sam Smith is an award-winning journalist and a former executive editor of Road & Track magazine. Together, we explore the emotion at the heart of the machine. We don't love racing for the nuts and bolts—we love it for what it asks of the bag of meat at the wheel. New episodes every Tuesday.
We invite you to take a trip back in time - to a wet, soggy Nürburgring - as we re-live the 1962 German GP with Peter Windsor. The race resulted in a classic win for BRM's Graham Hill - but that was just the start of it. Hill was lucky to survive a lurid practice crash; Porsche, with Dan Gurney, were superquick after a week of testing; and for a while on Sunday, with mudslides making life perilous for the 350,000-strong crowd, it seemed as though the race might not happen at all. Peter details these events and more - and concludes this podcast with an assessment of the astonishing success of BRM chassis no 5781.
7. Wallace Reid.

How did Gordon Murray get his tenacious hunger of design and problem solving? How did he come to design the legendary McLaren F1? What does his new car, the T.50, do that other supercars don't? And what are those strange contraptions he built out of a boiler and a food truck? All that and a lot more will be answered in this amazing episode. If there were a hall of fame for cars, Gordon Murray would be near the top, seated at the table of bosses next to people like Colin Chapman, Enzo Ferrari, Bruce McLaren, and Dan Gurney. He was the lead designer and engineer behind the McLaren F1, which came after he had a very successful career as a lead engineer in F1. For some, those credits would be enough to hang their legacy on but as you'll soon hear, Gordon is not like other people. His new venture, GMA (Gordon Murray Automotive), has debuted two cars that lit the supercar world on fire because their intent is not to deliver the quickest, fastest, or most powerful ride on Earth, but the best to drive. Gordon's focus has always been about weight reduction and driver feedback, and as will become clear in this show, his focus is sharper than ever. If you've listened to or watched a NASCAR race in the past 50 years, there's a voice that is synonymous with some of the sport's biggest moments. Legendary broadcaster Mike Joy joins Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis to fill listeners in on his career, as well as talk shop about the broadcasting craft. After a meteoric rise from the PA booth of New England's finest short tracks, Joy has gone on to work for almost every major broadcasting network in motorsports over the past five decades. Growing up in Windsor, Connecticut, Joy enrolled at the University of Hartford pursuing a degree in engineering. It was here that he got his first on-air experience after taking a position at the university's radio station as a play-by-play commentator for sporting events. It was also during these years that he became involved in the world of motorsports. He had developed a love for sports cars as a teenager, thanks to an extensive collection of auto magazines and his father's acquisition of a two-seater that the two worked on. His admiration for the road racing experts of the day, such as Dan Gurney and Mark Donohue sparked an interest to join the driving ranks himself. But without proper funding or opportunity, he settled into the sport of autocross where competitors could use their street vehicles. His autocross club brought him to Riverside Park Speedway in Agawam, Massachusetts – a small pavement oval located in an amusement park. Thanks to his broadcasting experience, he was asked to hop on the microphone during an autocross meet one Sunday to help inform any park attendees who may have wandered into the track exactly what was happening in the competition. Before long, park owner Ed Carroll noticed that a few hundred people had gathered in the grandstands to watch a single car weaving around barrels, and invited Joy on board to become a fill-in PA announcer. Although he initially turned down the offer, citing a disinterest in the crude jalopies of the oval racing circuit, he attended a Saturday night show at the recommendation of the track's public relations specialist. After witnessing a mad dash to the finish between two drivers and the effect it had on the audience, Joy thought “I need to be a part of this.”Joy fills Dale and Mike in on how taking the position at Riverside introduced him to the legendary Ken Squier, and how that guided him to joining the Motor Racing Network. He talks about an opportunity he received to call some of the 1975 IROC race at Daytona, and how that moment made him realize that he could have a career in broadcasting. The conversation also dives into the art of commentating, and how different platforms require different approaches. Joy recounts a hilarious story of sneaking into the 1976 Daytona 500 and joining in on the Wood Brothers' victory lane celebration. He also shares the details of his final conversation with Dale Earnhardt Sr.Although known for his contributions to the sport from inside the broadcaster's booth, Joy still managed to have a career in road racing, and shares the details of his 1973 IMSA debut, as well as his experiences in the 1993 24 Hours of Daytona. In 2022, Joy celebrated his 22nd consecutive year as lead commentator for the Daytona 500. It also marked his 46th year of involvement with Daytona Speedweeks, a record that may never be eclipsed. As a young racer growing up in America in the 60s, Bobby Rahal idolised people like Phil Hill, Dan Gurney and Mario Andretti - drivers who had made it across the Atlantic to drive in Formula 1. He dreamt of doing the same; of travelling to Europe to race at the circuits he'd read about in magazines and going wheel to wheel with his racing heroes. After making a name for himself on US road circuits and putting in some stand-out performances in Formula 3, that F1 opportunity came in 1978 when Walter Wolf offered Bobby a seat alongside Jody Scheckter at the US and Canadian Grand Prix. They were the last two races of the season and, sadly, they would be the first and last races that Bobby would contest in Formula 1. Although his time at the top was brief, Bobby's legacy lives on as one of a handful of American drivers to have made it to F1. In this episode, Bobby addresses the need for more US drivers on the grid and he winds back the decades to reveal the passions that fuelled his love of European motorsport, his journey to F1 and what really happened at those two races back in 1978. Soy Toni Colom. From being the first African American to race at Indianapolis to testing Formula One cars and winning multiple IMSA GTO races, he's also driven for or been sponsored/supported by some of the biggest names in and out of the sport - Dan Gurney, Jack Roush (via Ford Motor Company), Bill Cosby and many others. They all believed in Willy enough to help him forge his path of success. He was inducted into the Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame just prior to the 2021 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach and spent some time talking with us after he had popped in a quick “Hello” during fellow LBMWoF inductee Will Power's interview. I would've liked to have spent more time interviewing him, however he was interrupted during our chat and told that he had to get to another commitment. Enjoy! On April 17, 1964 the automotive world was rocked when a new vehicle was introduced. It was in at least two James Bond films: Thunderball and Goldfinger. Dan Gurney was a driver of the test car before production started and Lee Ioccoa, the man responsible for the mini van at Chrysler, was responsible for this new car that has been an icon with auto enthusiast since 1964. The car? The Ford Mustang. When I started researching the origins of the Mustang, it led to so many trails of information, it was almost overwhelming. This is another car that's exciting for me to talk about. Partly because I owned a 1979 coupe-the loud and sorta fast car I always wanted in high school. This is a great story that you'll enjoy. So, let's get right into it. Here's links to more information on the introduction of the Ford Mustang: http://www.365daysofmotoring.com Jalopnik.com: This Day in History, the Ford Mustang Auto.HowStuffWorks.com: 1965-1966 Ford Mustang Wikipedia: Ford Mustang What's coming up next on My First Ride?
