A re-release of one of my favorite episodes, in memory of Rob Reiner, whose direction gave us one of the most enduring love stories of all time. Some movies don't just entertain you. They quietly shape who you become. This week on Hopeless Romantics, we're revisiting The Princess Bride with Meg Mansell, a film that taught us about love, loyalty, humour, and why “as you wish” hits harder than it ever should. We talk about watching it as kids, rewatching it as adults, and how different the story feels once you've lived a little. From Buttercup and Wesley's version of true love, to the heartbreak and purity of Inigo Montoya and his father, this conversation goes far beyond fairy tales and sword fights. We also unpack how romance changes with age, why anxiety once passed for butterflies, and how friendship, safety, and humour end up mattering more than grand gestures. The 2025 Budget was set up to be the most important since at least the Truss-Kwarteng mega-failure of 2022. It's Labour's first attempt to set a full, multi-year spanning agenda since 2007. In the build-up to it every possible financial lever has been floated as on the table: income tax rises, changes to national insurance and VAT, windfall taxes on banks or the gambling industry, to name a few. What the Chancellor eventually decides to do will have serious ramifications for years to come. So it's only right that our reactive episode of It's Bloody Complicated treats this moment with the seriousness it deserves. This episode was hosted by Clive Lewis, Labour Member of Parliament for Norwich South, as he gave his own insight into what the Budget means and how the PLP have reacted to it.Joining Clive was Erin Mansell, Head of External Affairs at the Women's Budget Group, and Michael Jacobs, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Sheffield.Erin Mansell leads WBG's influencing work getting their analysis and policy recommendations for a gender equal economy out to as large and diverse audiences as possible. Before joining WBG in October 2022, Erin was responsible for public affairs at Solace Women's Aid, a specialist domestic abuse and sexual violence charity where she specialised in tackling housing and homelessness issues for survivors of male violence. Prior to that she was Political Advisor and Researcher at the Women's Equality Party, supporting the Party Leader, developing policies, and campaigning for universal free childcare and an end to violence against women and girls.Michael Jacobs is Professor of Political Economy at the University of Sheffield. He is a former General Secretary of the Fabian Society (1997-2003) and member of the Council of Economic Advisers at the Treasury (2004-07). Marti sits down with Dylan Mansell, a second-generation builder from Moonta Bay, South Australia. Dylan shares his journey from working on site with his dad to navigating the "absolute chaos" of the building boom, where revenue tripled but systems broke. They discuss the dangerous trap of "busyness doesn't equal profitability" and how Dylan had to stop being a "reactive builder" constantly putting out fires. Dylan reveals how he refined his sales process with a strict qualifying questionnaire to stop wasting time on free quotes, and how shifting his focus from "pleasing everybody" to "working on the top 20%" allowed him to finally get off the tools and lead his team of nine effectively.

This week in the Louisiana Anthology. Walt Whitman came to New Orleans for 3 months to write at the New Orleans Crescent. There he saw things he had not seen in New York. This poem is about one of those. "I Saw in Louisiana a Live-Oak Growing." I saw in Louisiana a live-oak growing, All alone stood it and the moss hung down from the branches, Without any companion it grew there uttering joyous leaves of dark green, And its look, rude, unbending, lusty, made me think of myself, But I wonder'd how it could utter joyous leaves standing alone there without its friend near, for I knew I could not, And I broke off a twig with a certain number of leaves upon it, and twined around it a little moss, And brought it away, and I have placed it in sight in my room, It is not needed to remind me as of my own dear friends, (For I believe lately I think of little else than of them,) Yet it remains to me a curious token, it makes me think of manly love; For all that, and though the live-oak glistens there in Louisiana solitary in a wide flat space, Uttering joyous leaves all its life without a friend a lover near, I know very well I could not. This week in Louisiana history. August 23, 1714. St. Denis begins his exploration of Red River Valley. This week in New Orleans history. The grass-roots organization Levees.org, founded by Sandy Rosenthal and her son Stanford (while exiled in Lafayette after Hurricane Katrina) is devoted to educating America on the facts associated with the 2005 catastrophic flooding of the New Orleans region. On August 23, 2010 the group installed a Louisiana State Historic Marker which reads “On August 29, 2005, a federal floodwall atop a levee on the 17th Street Canal, the largest and most important drainage canal for the city, gave way here causing flooding that killed hundreds. This breach was one of 50 ruptures in the Federal Flood Protection System on that day. In 2008, the US District Court placed responsibility for this floodwall's collapse squarely on the US Army Corps of Engineers.” This week in Louisiana. There's slim options for Takapuna Golf Course, which looks likely to halve in size under an Auckland Council plan to turn it into a flooding wetland. The Council's final proposal converts the course into a flood-protection area. Public consultation is planned for later this year, including how to use the dry half. Auckland Council Head of Sustainable Partnership, Tom Mansell, says they don't want golf in the wetland section. "In the remaining area, if they can fit an 18-hole in and that's what the Kaipātiki board wants, then we'll work on that." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
