We unpack what's driving this trend, the UK's rising mortgage-free rates, Ireland's housing crisis, and why Finland remains the world's happiest nation (while the UK slips).

E109 The Fifth CourtA most amusing encounter.Hosts Peter Leonard and Mark Tottenham talk to retired judge Bernard Barton, a fabulous raconteur, about his life and times, including his career as a used car salesman!Bernard Barton is a retired Irish judge who served on the High Court from 2014 until his retirement in March 2021. During his tenure, he was known for his opposition to certain judicial reforms, notably the controversial guidelines proposed by the Judicial Council's Personal Injuries Guidelines Committee. These guidelines aimed to standardise awards in personal injury cases, a move Barton and several of his colleagues resisted. He remains actively engaged in legal discourse, particularly concerning defamation law. He has been a vocal critic of government proposals to abolish juries in High Court defamation cases, arguing that such a move would undermine the role of juries in the judicial process. Beyond this he has expressed concerns about the composition of the High Court bench, suggesting it does not adequately represent a fair cross-section of society. He has also advocated for the utilisation of retired judges to alleviate pressures within the court system, proposing that experienced former judges could be called upon to assist as needed. He recommends a number of movies, including Laurence of Arabia, Gandhi and A Man for All Seasons. His choice of book is 'A sparrow's flight : the memoirs of Lord Hailsham of St. Marylebone' Hosted on Acast. Joining Jill and Doron on the 30th episode of the podcast, the eleventh of our second season, to tell us his story is British criminal defense lawyer Henry Milner. From Carmel, Henry studied law at the London School of Economics. For over forty years now, Henry has been the go-to lawyer for some of Britain's most notorious criminals. Chambers Directory described his eponymous law firm, formerly based in London's Hatton Gardens and now in Marylebone, as “a Rolls-Royce outfit”. In his book ‘No Lawyers in Heaven', published in the year 2020, Henry - to whom the Sunday Times referred to as 'The Mr Big of Criminal Briefs' - offers a fascinating insight into life at the top of the profession, lifting the lid on the psychology of those who end up on the wrong side of the law and those who defend them. The book includes a chapter (which can be found at https://www.carmelcollege.co.uk/the-road-from-carmel-podcast) on Henry's time at Carmel. He followed up with a second book, the novel ‘Murder at the Bailey', two years later. He lives in Hampstead Garden Suburb with his wife, with whom he has two children, one a barrister, the other an abstract artist. Hear Henry talk about why - chez Milner - Shabbat often finished at 2pm, Kopul apologizing to him, bullfights in the Carmel library, his unbroken high jump record, fainting at a Stamler family occasion, his love of Americana music, and how to handle professional criminals. Thank you, Henry Milner, for turning us again to Carmel days! Dedication: at Henry's request, this episode is dedicated to the memory of his fellow pupil Anthony Batiste (brother of former MP Spencer Batiste), who tragically passed away in 1960 at the age of 14 from a rare heart condition while representing Carmel at an away match. Send us a textAristocratic Legacy Shapes London's Luxury Property Market: Rich homebuyers in London are drawn to areas with a history of aristocratic landowners like Kensington and Chelsea, where estates managed by families such as Cadogan, Grosvenor, and Howard de Walden continue to attract interest despite a slump in luxury property sales. Continuous management preserves quality and boosts property values, unlike areas without dominant landowners.Build to Rent (BTR) Sector Adapts to Modern Renters' Needs: The BTR sector is becoming increasingly popular by offering flexible leases, high-quality amenities, and community-focused spaces that cater to modern lifestyles. Developments are often in prime locations and provide move-in-ready homes, making them a convenient and appealing choice for renters seeking flexibility and a sense of belonging.Non-Dom Tax Crackdown Affects Wealthy Homeowners: Wealthy individuals are selling prime properties and relocating abroad in anticipation of the UK's upcoming non-dom tax changes. This shift is impacting the high-end London property market, with notable sales like David Sullivan's £65 million Marylebone mansion highlighting the trend.Nationwide Eases Mortgage Rules to Aid Homebuyers: Nationwide Building Society has increased the salary multiplier for mortgages, allowing homebuyers to borrow up to six times their salary, which helps first-time buyers enter the market. The society also reduced mortgage rates, providing further assistance to those struggling with high house prices and the cost of living crisis.UK Property Market Faces Key Legislative Changes: New regulations, including the Renters' Rights Bill and potential increases in the Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) surcharge for overseas buyers, are set to impact the UK residential property market. The Renters' Rights Bill aims to increase tenant protections, while the SDLT changes could affect acquisition strategies for non-UK residents.Maximize your property wealth with London Property. Turn challenges into opportunities. With expert knowledge and reach, we tackle the complexities and inefficiencies of the property market with you.
Sims Wear is a British menswear brand delivering elevated wardrobe essentials produced from the best wool and textiles in the British Isles. Dedicated to quality, and to creating timeless luxury that will stand the test of time, Sims Wear is built on three pillars; the best grade fibre, the best yarn spinner, and the best knitter. The materials used are also a trio of excellence; Supima Cotton, Nomadic Cashmere, and Merino Lambswool create a collection of style and comfort crafted to last. Pieces are made to outlive trends, and everything is done in the UK, from the fibre carding and spinning, through to knitting, weaving, cutting and sewing. The Sims Wear look is all about simple wardrobe builders, a classically British aesthetic with modern quiet elegance at its heart. Colour, cut and fabrication is key, where Margate Beach meets Marylebone via Scotland and the Yorkshire Dales. Founded by Rory Bennett and Billy Sims-Hilditch, the brand was born with a quest to find the perfect jumper. Billy chose a classic, super-soft navy blue cashmere crew-neck from a premium British retailer. It fit beautifully, felt great on, and went with everything. Sadly after only one year, the jumper had fallen apart at the seams. Having spent considerable amounts of time and money on the purchase, frustrated Billy set about researching what made a good jumper. This was when the Holy Trinity of knitwear, which is now intrinsic to Sims Wear, was identified, the best-in class fibre, yarn spinner and knitter. When these three are in place, something beautiful is created. The ever present chase for lower prices has meant that over the years, brands which were once associated with quality, sadly no longer live up to those standards. In a further move towards sustainability, there is a Repair and Recondition service for knitwear. This means that if any unfortunate accidents befall your jumper, you can send it back to the brand to be repaired. Whether it's patches on the elbows, or simply a hole which can be darned, most issues if caught early enough can be fixed. In the process, jumpers will also be reconditioned by de-pilling it and washing it, making sure it's returned in exceptional condition. Who should we interview next? Text us here!Support the show

Around the world, there are some foods that are either banned or super controversial. For example, in the United States, you can't buy haggis because it contains sheep lungs, which are banned. Foie gras, made from the liver of force-fed ducks or geese, is banned in places like California due to animal cruelty concerns. In Japan, eating fugu, a type of pufferfish, is a risky delicacy because it's poisonous if not prepared correctly. And in some countries, raw milk is a no-go because it can carry harmful bacteria. The wonderful, beautiful and generous chef & restauranteur Ravinder Bhogal brought us some absolutely delicious food when she came round for this weeks episode! As the owner of the fabulous Marylebone restaurant Jikoni, Ravinder's Comfort & Joy delivery boxes got us through the never-ending lockdowns (Sam still says it's his best home cooked meal ever!). She told us all about how she set up the restaurant, growing up in Kenya, how she started her career on Gordon Ramsey's ‘F Word' and that she's known to hang out with Stanley Tucci & cook for Sir Paul McCartney. Ravinder's Falooda cake is one of the most delicious things I've ever tried, potentially my new last supper pudding! They all serve a purpose, and they all attract a clientele and a team that represents what the business offers. In a city like London, the luxury end of the market is very competitive, and brands regularly come and go. But occasionally, you come across a business that stands the test of time. The Michael Van Clarke salon in Marylebone is an example of a luxury salon that, after 35 years in business, is going stronger than ever! My guest on today's podcast is the founder of this iconic luxury brand, Michael Van Clarke. In today's podcast, we will discuss: - What it takes to create a luxury brand - The Michael Van Clarke limited liability partnership model - The importance of training your team… And lots more! From home cook to food journalist and eventually chef and restaurateur, Ravinder Bhogal reflects on her own experiences as an immigrant in London and how it influenced a ‘no borders' kitchen in her own restaurant. Ravinder is a journalist, cook and owner of the incredible Jikoni restaurant in Marylebone, in west London. She started her career as a beauty writer for More magazine in the early noughties before a TV cooking competition completely changed her life. Ravinder beat off nine thousand other budding chefs to be crowned “The New Fanny Craddock” on Gordon Ramsay's The F Word in 2007. It catapulted her to fame, including an award-winning cookbook and a number of TV appearances alongside the likes of Ramsay and Jay Rainer, as well as her own series. Her new book Comfort and Joy is out now. Ravinder's book choices are: The Awakening by Kate Chopin Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys How to Eat by Nigella Lawson Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in her Head by Warsan Shire The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri Vick Hope, multi-award winning TV and BBC Radio 1 presenter, author and journalist, is the host of season six of the Women's Prize for Fiction Podcast. In a small hayloft in Marylebone, a daring plot was formed. This plot was so audacious and terrifying that it could never really happen. Could it? Against a backdrop of feverish political unrest and suppression of radical thought in 1820, a group of men intent on reform decide to take matters into their own hands. What they are planning to do is unthinkable, but - to them - necessary. The idea - murder the entire Cabinet and tip the country into revolution. Is fate on their side? How are they going to achieve their aim? Join us this week to talk about the Cato Street Conspiracy. Visit the show notes for supporting images on this week's episode. Get in touch!
