Did you know that in addition to saving the free world, Churchill was also an accomplished painter? In this episode of the Anglotopia Podcast, Jonathan Thomas sits down with Dr. Lucy Davis — curator of paintings at the Wallace Collection in London and co-curator of Winston Churchill the Painter, the first major retrospective of Churchill's art in over 60 years and the first substantial UK exhibition devoted to his paintings since his death in 1965. The exhibition brings together nearly 60 works, roughly half from private collections rarely accessible to the public, and traces the full arc of Churchill's artistic life: from the tentative canvases he made during the darkest moment of his World War I career, through the luminous Mediterranean harbors and Moroccan cityscapes of his mature period, to the bold late works of a man who found in painting one of the greatest solaces of his life. Lucy walks Jonathan through the story of how Churchill came to paint, the three major artists who shaped his style — John Lavery, Walter Sickert, and William Nicholson — the single painting he made during World War II, the extraordinary Hallmark Cards world tour, and why the Wallace Collection is the perfect home for this once-in-a-lifetime show. The exhibition runs until November 29, 2026. Book your tickets now. Lucy is very grateful to her colleagues at Hallmark Cards, Inc. for their research into the World Tour of Churchill's paintings, which she has referenced in this podcast. This is a genuinely once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Churchill took up painting in 1915 at the lowest point of his life, following the catastrophic failure of the Dardanelles campaign. His wife Clementine later said she thought he would die of grief — and it was painting that gave him back his spark. Churchill was never formally trained, but worked closely with at least three leading professional artists: John Lavery (portraiture and plein air painting), Walter Sickert (modernist techniques and working from photographs), and William Nicholson (still life, tonal restraint, and simplified composition). Churchill's single painting during World War II was a view of Marrakesh, painted the day after he took President Roosevelt to see the sunset over the Atlas Mountains following the Casablanca Conference. He gave it to Roosevelt as a gift — it is in the exhibition, facing the painting he later gave to President Eisenhower. The Wallace Collection's connection to Churchill runs deeper than the exhibition: Odette Pol Roger was born Odette Wallace as great-granddaughter of Sir Richard Wallace, became Churchill's close friend, and reserved an entire vintage of Pol Roger champagne for him. A quarter-bottle believed to be one of the last he drank before his death in 1965 is on display in the exhibition. Churchill's paintings were the subject of a record-breaking world tour of North America, Australia, and New Zealand in 1958, masterminded by President Eisenhower and Joyce C. Hall, founder of Hallmark Cards. Churchill initially refused — until Eisenhower wrote him a personal letter about the wave of goodwill it would create. Churchill submitted paintings to competitions under the pseudonym "David Winter" and was given the title of Honorary Academician Extraordinary by the Royal Academy — only the second person ever to receive this honor, after Edward VII. The goldfish pool at Chartwell — Lucy's personal favorite painting in the exhibition — contains a detail invisible in photography: the ripple created by the fish on the surface, painted in a subtle mauve-grey. Lucy says it perfectly summarizes Churchill's playful, witty personality. Picasso, upon seeing Churchill's painting La Dragonnière, said (paraphrasing) that Churchill would have been a good professional painter if he hadn't had something else to do. The painting is in the exhibition. The new edition of Churchill's own book Painting as a Pastime — with an introduction by Paul Rafferty — has just been published and is the perfect companion to the exhibition. It explains in Churchill's own words why he took up painting and why everyone else should too. Soundbites "Clementine was looking on and she was so relieved to see him engaged in something. He talked about all this unwanted leisure — going from a really high-pressured executive job to suddenly watching the whole tragedy unfold. To see that spark lit up again." — Lucy on Clementine's reaction when Churchill first picked up a paintbrush. "He said painting was a complete distraction. He said: I know nothing which without exhausting the body more entirely absorbs the mind." — Lucy quoting Churchill on why painting worked when nothing else could. "He's painting the headquarters of the battalion as it was progressively being shelled and devastated. One of his young soldiers said he was unusually quiet and withdrawn and asked what was wrong — and he said: I've been really struggling to paint the craters." — Lucy on Churchill painting in the trenches at Plug Street. "He said it should be a joy ride in a paint box. Nobody should feel afraid or daunted by it. We don't have to aspire to masterpieces." — Lucy on Churchill's message to anyone who wants to paint. "A traveling exhibition of your paintings in the United States would not only attract a great deal of attention, but I am certain it would serve in a very definite way to strengthen the friendship between our two countries." — Lucy quoting Eisenhower's letter persuading Churchill to allow the world tour. "He submitted a painting in 1925 to an amateur painting competition and won first prize — although one of the judges wanted to disqualify it because he thought it must be by a professional painter." — Lucy on Churchill exhibiting anonymously under the pseudonym David Winter. "Picasso said — and I'm paraphrasing — that he would have been a good professional painter if he didn't have something else to do." — Lucy on Picasso's verdict on Churchill's painting La Dragonnière. "There's a particular detail that doesn't come out in photography — the ripple created by the fish on the surface that he's painted in this sort of mauve-grey color. It's just such a lovely finishing touch and really summarizes that playful, witty side of his personality." — Lucy on her favorite painting in the exhibition, the goldfish pool at Chartwell. "He made the gardener row back and forth across the moat to create ripples so he could try a different effect in the water." — Lucy on Churchill's obsessive dedication to capturing reflections accurately. "I think he would like to see us leaving the exhibition with smiles on our faces and with an urge to pick up a paintbrush." — Lucy on what Churchill himself would have wanted visitors to take away. Send us Fan MailFive things worth knowing this week.1. Prices dip, transactions drop.Halifax confirmed a 0.1% fall in UK house prices in May. London and the South East led the decline. Residential transactions fell 3% in April to just over 101,000. Higher inflation expectations are keeping borrowing costs elevated despite recent cuts. For prime London owners, the headline number is less important than the direction — when transactions fall, liquidity tightens, and liquidity is what protects value when you need to move.2. Legal complexity at the top end is accelerating.Compliance demands, AML requirements, and due diligence obligations are adding time, cost, and friction to high-value completions. This is not new — but it is getting faster. Assembling the right legal team before you need it is now part of the transaction itself.3. The Remediation Bill — another layer.Coming on top of leasehold reform, the Renters' Rights Act, and successive tax changes, the Remediation Bill adds to a regulatory stack that is now material in its cumulative weight. If you have multiple properties or development interests, map your exposure now.4. Planning reform: fewer decisions to committee. The government's National Scheme of Delegation will mean more decisions delegated to officers, fewer going to committee. Faster in theory — but less opportunity to challenge through the political process. The officer relationship matters more than it used to.5. India's UHNWI population up 27% by 2031.India's ultra-high-net-worth cohort is projected to cross 25,000 individuals by 2031. Mayfair, Knightsbridge, and Marylebone have all seen sustained Indian UHNWI interest over the past decade. As that population grows, so does the pool of prospective prime London buyers. To get the attention of lululemon and encourage the company to move faster in cleaning up its supply chain, Action Speaks Louder launched 'mumumelon'. Send us Fan MailAs Marylebone Theatre prepares to open a seminal revival of Arthur Miller's The Price, Elliot Cowan sat down with us to talk about taking on the role of Victor Franz, a man grappling with the physical and emotional debris of a family estate. As a veteran of the stage, he's become known for his ability to inhabit characters defined by internal conflict. Indeed his career has seen him move seamlessly between the physical demands of the stage and the precise requirements of screen acting. The new production at Marylebone reunites him with director Jonathan Munby and serves as a testament to Elliot's versatility, placing him at the heart of a timely exploration of sacrifice, duty, and the American Dream within an intimate performance space. In this brand new interview, Elliot Cowan opens up about the changing environment for actors and the psychological toll of the actor's craft. We talked about his role as Victor Franz very much mirrors his own life right now as he approaches 50 and how he himself feels has paid "the price" for longevity in this industry. Our conversation also addressed contemporary challenges facing actors in 2026 as demands on actors continue to shift and evolve. We also reflected on his role as the title character in Macbeth, starring opposite Laura Rogers and how he learned to play to a theatre like The Globe. Indeed, we also delved into his early training as he notes both Laura and John Hopkins who he stars alongside in The Price all trained at RADA around the same time. We learn what has stayed with him since those early years and how he continues to cross paths with peers decades into his career. The Price runs at Marylebone Theatre from 17th April - 7 June.

Hazel Baker traces the story of White Conduit House in Barnsbury, Islington, from its origins as a 1431 Henry VI–licensed water conduit supplying Charterhouse to its later life as an affordable, working-class pleasure garden. She explains how Robert Bartholomew's 1750s improvements and famed hot rolls and butter made it a London destination, noted by Oliver Goldsmith, and how resident organist James Hook began his career there. In the 1780s the adjacent White Conduit Fields hosted the aristocratic White Conduit Club; disruptions from a public right of way helped prompt Thomas Lord to secure a private ground in Marylebone, leading to the MCC and cricket's codified laws. The venue later rebranded with spectacles but declined as urban building and nearby gasworks spoiled the air, and it was demolished in 1849, with fragments remembered in names, gardens, plaques, and a surviving façade.

This week, I sat down with Andrew Hynard to unpack a corporate career that spans more than three decades at JLL, the chief executive leadership of one of London's most prestigious estates, and a post-executive chapter advising some of the most interesting property businesses in the UK. Andrew spent the majority of his career at JLL focused on Capital Markets, ultimately becoming Deputy Chairman of the UK business. He later became Chief Executive of The Howard de Walden Estate, overseeing 90 acres in Marylebone with a portfolio heavily weighted toward private healthcare in and around Harley Street. Today, he advises businesses including Clipstone Investment Management, Howard Group, Orega, Taurus Developments and Love Ventures, a VC investor in early stage technology companies   In this conversation, Andrew reflects on growing up as the son of a surveyor in Hastings and deciding at just ten years old that property would be his path. We explore his early decision to specialise in investment rather than rotate through departments, and why he later regretted not gaining broader technical grounding despite accelerating his capital markets career. We go deep into his time at JLL, including the cultural and strategic forces behind the merger with King Sturge, how he navigated internal politics without burning bridges, and why playing the long game and treating people with decency became his defining leadership philosophy. Andrew also shares the transition from advisory to client side when he became CEO of Howard de Walden, what it really means to run a £3–4 billion estate in one of London's most complex submarkets, and why attracting world class healthcare operators like Cleveland Clinic was a defining moment. We then turn to today's market. Andrew gives a candid view on the state of UK real estate, the leadership reset across major advisory firms, where growth is actually coming from, why income will dominate returns for the foreseeable future, and why he believes we are approaching an inflection point rather than a falling knife moment. Finally, we explore his portfolio of advisory roles, his work in venture capital, and why mentoring the next generation is one of the most important investments he now makes.   Key Topics Covered in This Episode ✅ From Hastings to Deputy Chairman How Andrew set his sights on property at age ten and built a 30+ year capital markets career. ✅ The King Sturge Merger The first conversation that led to one of the most significant UK advisory mergers of the past two decades. ✅ Advisory vs Client Side What changes when you move from broker to principal and how to make that transition successfully. ✅ Leading the Howard de Walden Estate Healthcare, tenant mix strategy, stakeholder management and long term estate stewardship. ✅ The State of the UK Market Flat growth, tentative optimism, income driven returns and why 2025 could be a turning point. ✅ Leadership Change Across UK Agencies Why so many CEOs have changed and what the next generation must get right. ✅ Building a Post Executive Portfolio Advisory roles, venture capital, mentoring and giving back to the industry. And of course, I asked Andrew the big question: Who are the People, what Property, and which Place would you invest in if you had £500 million to deploy? If you have thoughts or questions about this episode, drop them in the comments. I'd love to hear your take. The UK Investor Magazine was delighted to welcome Dan Higgins and James Bloomer from Marylebone Partners to discuss Majedie Investments' deeply diversified approach to delivering value to shareholders.Majedie Investments is an investment trust like no other.Dan provides an overview of their differentiated approach, which allocates the portfolio across direct investment, special investments, and external fund managers. The portfolio contains UK stocks such as Weir Group, a copper-focused ETF, and uranium investments that can't be named, as well as investments with deeply specialised fund managers that UK retail investors simply don't have direct access to.Find out more about Majedie Investments hereThe conversation explores their contrarian philosophy. Most investors forecast markets. Marylebone doesn't. Their portfolio deliberately diverges sharply from global equity indices. They explain why non-consensual thinking matters and why they've avoided the mega-cap U.S. stocks that dominate benchmarks. The U.S. has led global markets for over a decade. But Higgins and Bloomer question whether this regime is permanent. They dig into America's position as a net debtor to the world and explain why the net international investment position should matter to investors.Emerging markets have disappointed for years. Yet that long underperformance may be the opportunity.Bloomer, fresh from another research trip to China, addresses what investors misunderstand about Chinese policymakers and outlines the country's deep appeal. We explore ideological risks shaping markets today. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week, Michelle shallow dives into the legend and folklore behind one of rock n' roll's most normal couples - Paul & Linda McCartney...When Paul and Linda met in 1967 at the Bag O Nails pub in London, you might think that it was all plain sailing from that first date to their wedding at Marylebone registry office 2 years later... Couldn't be further from the truth. There was shagging, there were missed connections and lots of obstacles to overcome, but by the time they married in 1969, just before the Beatles broke up, the pair were inseparable. In the early 1970s, after kids, a breakdown and a time-out on their farm in Kintyre, the pair formed the band Wings, which allowed Paul to continue making music while keeping Linda - and the kids - by his side. Despite criticism of the band, the media bullying of Linda and dubious tours, time would prove that the band, like their marriage, could endure almost anything and still come out on top. Listen now to the story of how they got together - and stayed together - to become one of rock's most enduring love stories. So grab a brown lemonade and settle in as the duo chat about Dan the bespectacled postie, what an Eavesdroppin' doll might look like, telly recs and more, only on Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast. From a single wheel of Beaufort cheese smuggled home from a disastrous ski trip to running three of London's most beloved food destinations, Patricia shares how a moment of serendipity sparked a movement that transformed how the city eats. Hear how she turned her garden shed into a “cheese cave,” won over Michelin-starred chefs, and built a thriving, independent food business — all without investors, all on instinct. In this conversation packed with stories and flavour, Patricia recounts her early days selling cheese at Camden Lock Market, the birth of her Marylebone café culture, and the surprising musical history of her family — including her brother's 1960s restaurant, Mr. Love, on Brook Street, where Jimi Hendrix once stayed upstairs. From those heady Soho days to her invention of “small plates” years before it became a trend, Patricia's journey is a love letter to creativity, connection, and courage in the world of food. From truffle pasta and toasted cheese made with a splash of white wine to tales of chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver discovering the joys of raw milk, Patricia brings the spirit of London's culinary scene to life. This is a story about taste and tenacity, told by the woman who taught a city how to eat cheese — with a rock'n'roll twist.--------Please leave us a great rating and a comment and share it with your friends - it really helps us grow as a show.If you're in the industry and are looking for the greatest POS system in the world than look no further -as Blinq are tearing up the rulebook—no long-term contracts, no hidden fees, and no per-device charges.Just £69 a month for unlimited devices and 24/7 UK-based support that's always there, in person when you need it.Built for hospitality, by hospitality, blinq is the fastest, easiest POS system on the market—so intuitive, anyone can use it. These guidelines aimed to standardise awards in personal injury cases, a move Barton and several of his colleagues resisted. He remains actively engaged in legal discourse, particularly concerning defamation law. He has been a vocal critic of government proposals to abolish juries in High Court defamation cases, arguing that such a move would undermine the role of juries in the judicial process. Beyond this he has expressed concerns about the composition of the High Court bench, suggesting it does not adequately represent a fair cross-section of society. He has also advocated for the utilisation of retired judges to alleviate pressures within the court system, proposing that experienced former judges could be called upon to assist as needed. Joining Jill and Doron on the 30th episode of the podcast, the eleventh of our second season, to tell us his story is British criminal defense lawyer Henry Milner. From Carmel, Henry studied law at the London School of Economics.  For over forty years now, Henry has been the go-to lawyer for some of Britain's most notorious criminals.  Chambers Directory described his eponymous law firm, formerly based in London's Hatton Gardens and now in Marylebone, as “a Rolls-Royce outfit”.  In his book ‘No Lawyers in Heaven', published in the year 2020, Henry - to whom the Sunday Times referred to as 'The Mr Big of Criminal Briefs' - offers a fascinating insight into life at the top of the profession, lifting the lid on the psychology of those who end up on the wrong side of the law and those who defend them.  The book includes a chapter (which can be found at https://www.carmelcollege.co.uk/the-road-from-carmel-podcast) on Henry's time at Carmel.  He followed up with a second book, the novel ‘Murder at the Bailey', two years later.  He lives in Hampstead Garden Suburb with his wife, with whom he has two children, one a barrister, the other an abstract artist. Hear Henry talk about why - chez Milner - Shabbat often finished at 2pm, Kopul apologizing to him, bullfights in the Carmel library, his unbroken high jump record, fainting at a Stamler family occasion, his love of Americana music, and how to handle professional criminals. Thank you, Henry Milner, for turning us again to Carmel days! Dedication: at Henry's request, this episode is dedicated to the memory of his fellow pupil Anthony Batiste (brother of former MP Spencer Batiste), who tragically passed away in 1960 at the age of 14 from a rare heart condition while representing Carmel at an away match.   Personal mentions in this episode: Rabbi Dr. Kopul Rosen (Founder & Principal) David Stamler (Headmaster) Alexander “Toby” Tobias (Jewish Studies & History) Joshua Gabbay (French & Junior School Headmaster) Malcolm Shifrin (Librarian) Mr. J. At 5:15am, on the Boxing Day morning of 1948, cartoonist Harry Michaelson was found on his doorstep of Flat 75 at Fursecroft in Marylebone, nursing a bloody wound to his head. With no memory of what had happened, the police relied on the evidence. But having made a lazy assumption, they almost derailed the entire investigation.Murder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile UK True Crime Podcast with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. The wonderful, beautiful and generous chef & restauranteur Ravinder Bhogal brought us some absolutely delicious food when she came round for this weeks episode! As the owner of the fabulous Marylebone restaurant Jikoni, Ravinder's Comfort & Joy delivery boxes got us through the never-ending lockdowns (Sam still says it's his best home cooked meal ever!). She told us all about how she set up the restaurant, growing up in Kenya, how she started her career on Gordon Ramsey's ‘F Word' and that she's known to hang out with Stanley Tucci & cook for Sir Paul McCartney. Ravinder's Falooda cake is one of the most delicious things I've ever tried, potentially my new last supper pudding! All of the delicious treats Ravinder served up are from her brand new cook book ‘Comfort & Joy'. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
