At number 35, 36, and 37 on the list of top-selling herbal supplements we find bacopa, senna, and rhodiola.Bacopa is also known as brahmi, and this name is just as often given to gotu kola (Centella asiatica) as well. This is because both are known by that name in Ayurvedic herbalism, where they originate. Both are able to improve mental clarity and cognitive function, and have the same type of energetics as well as growth habits. For practical purposes they are nearly identical, but their chemistry does differ, so the best extraction method may not be the same for both, and this could be relevant in the context of a commercial extract capsule.Senna is one of the cathartic stimulant laxatives. It is possible to become dependent on senna – not after one dose, but if taken for several days running. A person may then find it difficult to move the bowels without taking it every day. Better not to get into that situation! In the commercial context, note that this herb is often included in ‘detox' and ‘weight loss' supplements… although it does not truly serve either of those functions in a root-cause or restorative manner.Rhodiola is a very stimulating adaptogen, and so it's no wonder people talk about it as an ‘herb of happiness' or even an ‘herbal antidepressant'! But that is a misleading way to think of the root, and it can lead to some bad choices. At the Portuguese Grand Prix in 1985, three-time Formula 1 World Champion Ayrton Senna won his first race. In torrential rain, Senna dominated the race, leading from the start and winning by more than a minute and lapped nearly every other driver. Whilst other drivers were crashing out, the Brazilian kept his cool and took the chequered flag after 67 laps. Dan Prosser and Andrew Frankel discuss the life and career of triple Formula 1 World Champion Ayrton Senna. The Brazilian is regarded by many to be the greatest F1 driver of all time. He was ferociously quick, fearless in wheel-to-wheel battle and a master in the rain, but also willing to resort to underhand or even dangerous tactics to win.Senna died aged only 34, leaving his home country and the entire motorsport world bereft. He is one of only a handful of F1 drivers to truly transcend the sport and become a prominent figure in society as a whole. I was wondering if you can do a show or comment on vagus nerve stimulation and what your thoughts are on it. I am current using one called Vagustim. I heard of another person using it and helped them with gut health. I have a very stressful job and I am trying to calm myself at night. Everything was fine except that they found 1 innocuous polyp (now excised) and a dark colored colon. Due to the color, they asked me if I take stimulant laxatives, which I do not with regularity. Ive probably taken 2 bottles of Senna in my life, so I dont think that would be the cause. I rarely take stim. laxatives due to dependance risks. I do take mag07 every day, which is oxygenated mag oxide to help with bio-availability. I wanted to ask if you would know what else might cause this darkening? Are there any health issues that could be the cause? Im 40 and have been diagnosed with functional dyspepsia and mild gastritis from an endoscopy. Senna is a stimulant laxative. Its pharmacological activity comes from natural compounds called sennosides. Metabolites act locally in the colon to stimulate peristalsis, thereby accelerating bowel movements. While osmotic laxatives are generally considered first-line laxative agents, this makes senna a useful alternative for the short-term treatment of constipation. The pharmacokinetics of senna are unique in that its onset of action typically takes 6 to 12 hours after oral administration, reflecting the time required for colonic bacteria to metabolize sennosides into active compounds. This delayed onset makes senna better suited for bedtime dosing when overnight relief is desired. Although senna is effective, its use carries potential adverse effects. Common side effects include abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and, rarely, electrolyte disturbances such as hypokalemia. Chronic or excessive use can lead to dependency and possibly melanosis coli, a benign but visible pigmentation of the colon lining. Drug interactions may occur, particularly with medications affected by potassium levels, such as digoxin or diuretics. For these reasons, senna is generally recommended for short-term use, with emphasis on evaluating underlying causes of constipation before long-term therapy is considered.
