Watch out for the Great Grimpen Mire!Ian Bates joins series host Jim Towns in this deep delve into 1939's The Hound of the Baskervilles, which introduced the world to Basil Rathbone's touchstone performance as Sherlock Holmes. Produced by 20th Century Fox and co-starring Nigel Bruce as Holmes' faithful companion Dr. John Watson (and also featuring Universal faves Lionel Atwill and John Carradine), this film launched a series of movies and radio programs that would forever connect Rathbone's image and persona with Arthur Conan Doyle's brilliant detective.

“over many nations and three separate continents” [SIGN] We all know about Mary Morstan from The Sign of Four, of her marriage to Watson, and of Watson's "sad bereavement" after Sherlock Holmes returned from his hiatus in "The Empty House." But there is evidence in a number of stories to show that Watson has been married more than once. Evidence from scholars such as Baring-Gould, Bell, Blakeney, Brend, Bristowe (and that's just the B's!), as well as Roberts, Sayers, Simpson, and others. But exactly how many marriages were there? Fiorella Nash has three more books to add to your reading list. The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty The book details the demonic possession of eleven-year-old Regan MacNeil, the daughter of a famous actress, and the two priests who attempt to exorcise the demon. Devil in the Castle: St. Teresa of Avila, Spiritual Warfare, and the Progress of the Soul by Dan Burke We often think of demons appearing only in extravagant and extraordinary manifestations or working only through “bad” people. But the truth is more frightening than that. Most demonic activity takes place undetected, under the radar, and can even be hidden in our own prayer lives and in the churches where we attend Mass. Subtlety, illusion, and deceit are the preferred tactics of Satan's army of fallen angels, and they are waging an invisible battle for souls ― right now ― within and around us all. Sherlock Holmes And The Christmas Demon by James Lovegrove It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe – eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty – is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit.

Then they give their predictions for the coming season. Who will lead the team in scoring? Rebounds? Blocks? Assists? How many games will Duke win? How will the return of Dereck Lively and Dariq Whitehead impact the way the team plays? They also talk about the feeling of excitement around the program as it begins a new chapter. On this week's Richard Crouse Show Martin Freeman stops by. You know the Emmy, a BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Award winning actor from playing Tim Canterbury in the original British series of “The Office.” He was Dr. John Watson in the British crime drama series “Sherlock” opposite Benedict Cumberbatch, Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit” film trilogy and will soon be seen in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” reprising the role of Everett K. Ross. Today we'll talk about his newest project, the critically acclaimed police series “The Responder,” now playing on Brit Box. Then, we meet Emmy-award winning documentary filmmakers Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine who have created a fascinating look at iconic Canadian singer and poet Leonard Cohen called “HALLELUJAH: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song” that uses one of his most famous songs as a starting point. We'll find out why one of Cohen's most famous songs was rejected by his record company and more. Later in the show we'll meet Gregory Sestero, star of a new found footage film called “Infrared.” In the film he plays the creepy caretaker of an abandoned schoolhouse. If Greg's name rings a bell, it's likely because you've attended one of the midnight madness screenings of “The Room,” a movie so deliciously awful, it has become a cult favorite since its release in 2003. Gregory turned the experience of making the so-bad-it's-a-hoot movie into a book, which eventually went on to become the Oscar nominated movie The Disaster Artist, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen. We talk about “Infrared” and whether or not, twenty years on, if “The Room” is an embarrassment or a source of pride.

From direct adaptations to somewhat loose interpretations, from the late 1800s setting to fighting the Nazis, these Holmes mysteries encompass a lot of what we now come to regard as classic Sherlock Holmes.-This episode was originally issued as a Cine-Lit Patreon Subscriber episode in January 2022.Become a Cine-Lit Subscriber - https://www.patreon.com/cinelitPatreon Subscriber Link - https://open.acast.com/public/patreon/fanSubscribe/6485274-Check out the Cine-Lit website for additional content and further reading: https://cinelitpodcast.wordpress.com/Edited by Steve Woodward at https://podcastingeditor.com/ Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

– Ah, I make it just on half-past three. – Eight, Holmes. – What on earth are you talking about? – Half-past eight, see. – Watson, we are on New York time. – Oh. Oh, well I've always found Greenwich time perfectly adequate to me needs. I see no reason for changing it now. This month: New York! With a horribly miscast Roger Moore as Sherlock Holmes and a horribly misjudged John Watson in Patrick Macnee, Sherlock Holmes in New York is the story of a ruddy-cheeked and thoroughgoingly heterosexual consulting detective, his toffy-nosed dimwit sidekick, and their inexplicably beautiful girlfriend (Charlotte Derampling), who all harbour a dark secret, in the form of an appalling American moppet called Scott. Plus, all of the world's gold has been stolen, or at least shifted to a nearby floor. Which is why, dear listener, it took us two attempts to work up the courage to even watch this. In 1923, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – the famous author of Sherlock Holmes – embarked on a worldwide speaking tour. But this tour was not to sell books of his famous detective. Instead, it was to win converts to spiritual, ism – the idea that through seances, knocking, and advances in photography, the living could commune with the dead. With hundreds of millions grieving in the years following the First World War and the Spanish Flu, Sir Arthur felt that the world needed to hear his message, including the Latter-day Saints of the Salt Lake Valley. When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle arrived in Salt Lake City, it was not exactly his first experience with the Latter-day Saints. In 1887, he published the mystery, A Study in Scarlet – the first adventure of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. The intrepid Sherlock (using the "Science of Deduction") uncovers the horrors of murder, kidnapping, and forced marriages among the Latter-day Saints in the Salt Lake Valley. Sir Arthur launched the career of his famous detective, as it were, by playing up the most wild stereotypes of the Latter-day Saints. But his impression of the Latter-day Saints would undergo a profound transformation, and the author of "A Study in Scarlet," who imagined Mormon Women with faces that only showed "the traces of unextinguishable horror" would come to praise the "brave and earnest women" and the "rugged, hard-faced men" among the Latter-day Saint Pioneers. This is the 3rd session of Journalism for Liberation and Combat. This session is hosted by Too Black. Too Black is a poet, member of Black Alliance For Peace, producer of The Last Dope Intellectual Podcast, and host of The Black Myths Podcast on Black Power Media. He is based in Indianapolis, IN. This session focuses on The League of Revolutionary Black Workers newspaper work as a living example and case study for the examination of emancipatory journalism. In this episode Too Black breaks down comparisons of The South End under the editorship of John Watson in comparison with the coverage of the same events by The Detroit Free Press. This juxtaposition illuminates the possibilities of emancipatory journalism in practice. Shout out to Austin McCoy for sharing examples of articles from The South End with us for this presentation. Too Black also discusses the work he and his co-hosts do over at the Black Myths Podcast and the process they use to engage and debunk popular myths. Finally Too Black touches on methods of corporate counterinsurgency. Too Black's presentation is followed by a Q&A from the Journalism for Liberation and Combat course participants. In the Q&A Brooke Terpstra from Oakland Abolition and Solidarity and I begin a conversation with Too Black about prisons and profit that we continue during an episode of IMIXWHATILIKE that came out this past Monday March 28th. There's a brief introductory conversation by Brooke and me. As we ground the discussion within the overall context of the Journalism for Liberation and Combat seminar series. All of the Journalism for Liberation and Combat sessions have video versions as well and you can find those on Black Power Media, we'll provide a link to the playlist with all four sessions in the show notes. This particular session has a decent length powerpoint presentation with examples of articles from The South End so it is beneficial to watch it over on BPM.
