INSIDE | OUT - Joe CaslinJoe Caslin's latest temporary mural 'Come out to Play' has just been completed on the facade of the old museum/library on Parnell Street, Clonmel. In this episode I caught up with Joe to talk about his unique work and how his INSIDE | OUT mural represents a departure from his usually more serious subject matter.Joe is an Irish street artist, art teacher and activist, best known for his beautifully rendered pencil drawings, which manifest as towering pieces of street art. His highly accessible work engages directly with the social issues of modern Ireland, on an unavoidable scale. Caslin confronts the subjects of suicide, drug addiction, economic marginalisation, marriage equality, stigma in mental health, direct provision, institutional power, inclusion, consent and most recently, the effects of the Covid19 pandemic on young people. The monochrome drawings Caslin creates hold a mirror up to the kind of society that we are, whilst asking us individually what kind of society we want to be a part of.Visit: https://joecaslin.com to see more of Joe's work.If you'd like to contact the podcast: southtippartspodcast@gmail.comINSIDE/OUT is a project led by South Tipperary Arts Centre (STAC), as part of Faoin Spéir- In the Open Clonmel funded by the Arts Council of Ireland and in partnership with Tipperary County Council. Sparking Change with Dil

This week on Sparking Change, Dil brings us another episode from the sunny south-east, at this years’ Waterford Walls street art festival. Waterford Walls is an international street art festival started by The Walls Project that transforms Waterford City into an open-air gallery. Waterford Walls invites over 50 artists again in 2018 to transform the city walls, continuing to make Waterford an essential cultural attraction and International go-to destination for street art. This year’s festival ran from August 17th – 26th, so unfortunately it is now over. But make sure to mark it in your calendar for next year! In this episode, Dil talks to Edel Tobin, Louise Flynn and Joe Caslin. Edel Tobin is the founder and project manager with Waterford Walls Project. In 2014, she founded New Street Gardens, a pop up garden built on a derelict site in the city. In 2017, she launched Patterns of Light: a lighting display along the Quay in Waterford. Dil and Edel discuss the progress the festival has made in just four years, with fifty artists and over two hundred applicants for this year’s festival. Louise Flynn is a visual artist who works in Waterford and Kilkenny. She has curated many mural projects and artwork for festivals and exhibitions. She was recently invited to create a mural for Wynwood Embassy in Miami. It is this experience that drives her passion to see this art form transform Waterford City and capture the imagination of the community, as artists and people work together. Dil and Louise discuss the origins of the festival, the changing perception of street art, as well as street art’s ability to spark change. Check out Louise’s tattoos—she is a tattoo artist—here! Joe Caslin is an illustrator, street artist and teacher. He is also responsible for some of the most talked-about and thought-provoking street art seen throughout the cities of Ireland. He has a piece in this year’s festival called ‘Consent’. Dil and Joe discuss Joe’s piece in the festival: his departure from the theme of mental health amongst men to the very relevant issue of consent, as well as the Save Nonso campaign he is also working with. Check out Joe’s Instagram to see his amazing work.

My guests in this episode are Senator Lynne Ruane and Joe Caslin, recorded at the Body&Soul music and arts festival in front of a live audience. Senator Lynn Ruane From Tallaght in Dublin, Lynn is a senator and campaigner for drug reform and other social justice issues, as well as being a powerful voice for many of those unrepresented in our political system. An early school leaver and single mother of two, she got away from a life of drugs and went on to set up addiction programmes before becoming a mature student, a student union leader, and more recently, entering the world of politics as an independent senator. Now in her early 30s Lynne is a passionate force for change. Joe Caslin Also in his early 30s, Roscommon born Joe Caslin is a street artist and school teacher who lives in Tullamore. He made international news with the Claddagh Embrace, a giant street art work featuring two men embracing, which he launched during Ireland’s 2015 marriage equality referendum. Joe is a tireless educator who goes above and beyond for his students. The loss of several of his students to suicide motivated him to create works for a project he called Our Nations Sons. His latest project, The Volunteers, uses large scale provocative street art to draw attention to drug addiction, mental health and the issues affecting Asylum Seekers in the Direct Provision system. ........... Last December, for the third December in a row, we set up shop by the fire in Foxy John’s in downtown Dingle during the annual Other Voices’ festival for two days of talking. Our first out-take from Other Voices 2014 is a conversation with artist Joe Caslin, the man whose large-scale murals of young men appeared on the walls of various towns and cities around the country last year as part of the Our Nation’s Sons series. Here’s Joe talking about his life, work and the inspiration behind those amazing murals.
