Molly Rice & Rusty Thelin, co-founders of RealTime Arts in Pittsburgh talk about: The especially niche field of their work, which is the performance of live theater that aligns more with visual art and doesn't really check any of the ‘theater' boxes, and how they have interactive elements but don't confront the audience the way a lot of performance art does (they describe a “lot of conventions around theater… that contemporary audiences have trouble with…”); their series “People of Pittsburgh,” whose tagline is ‘Theatrical Portraits of Extraordinary Ordinary Pittsburghers;' the size of their audiences and how they're shows are often tailored to the neighborhood's they take place in, and how they make their performances as open to all as possible, with a ‘radical hospitality' option whenever possible; their hosting of Little Amal, the puppet of a Syrian refugee girl that travels the world doing performances amidst community and how their version added a play that incorporated a massive local crowd; their rock performance, ‘Angelmakers: Songs for Female Serial Killers,' which was a tight show, as compared with their more experimental and improvisatory shows, and how they got a much more mixed audience, including concert-goers to a rock concert, for that show. In the extended Full Patreon Bonus Episode, Molly & Rusty talk about: how they financially support their program, through a mix of fundraising, grants and occasional ticket sales; the gentrification that's happening in Pittsburgh, which they admit to being a part of, and moved there because they wanted to be somewhere they were needed, as artists, and was a perfect medium in between a big city and a small rural town; Pittsburgh's cohesive art/cultural community, which reminds Molly of 1990s Austin, TX, when she played in bands; how she consider their work multi-disciplinary, influenced both by site-specific work, and that they're descendants of the happenings of the ‘60s and ‘70s (including Claes Oldenburg and Robert Wilson); their current approach to social media (including looking into leaving Meta platforms); how connecting is a large part of success; and how they feel about connecting with the podcast's Open Call (the short answer is: ‘really good').

Katie Lee owns Katie's Pizza & Pasta with three locations in the St. Louis, Missouri area. Recently, the pizza company scored a huge client for its frozen pizza line to be sold in Walmart grocery stores starting in mid-to-late 2025. We get into what went into such a lucrative retail deal. There is so much more to Katie Lee's story. She shares her background, how she started her business and what led her into the frozen market. For more details on the Walmart deal, see the following release: Owner Katie Lee and Culinary Director Chef Jake Sanderson received the news onsite at Walmart headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, immediately following their pitch, which focused on Lee's unrelenting drive to grow the brand and keep doing more to share their award-winning offerings with a wider audience. Only a fraction of the hundreds of businesses who pitch thousands of products during Walmart's Open Call receive the prestigious Golden Ticket offer. “We did it! We got a Golden Ticket,” said Lee. “It's the American dream come true, and we're so proud to expand into Walmart. We're so grateful to our St. Louis fans who have supported us as we started offering frozen pizzas through our restaurant business during the pandemic. We dreamed big and expanded into local grocery outlets, nationwide shipping, then moved into wider retail distribution, and now Walmart.” Katie's is outperforming the strong frozen pizza category with over 100% growth year over year for the past three years, which is 10 times the growth of the entire category. What sets the Katie's frozen pizza line apart is the team's commitment to hand-crafting the premium artisan pizzas daily with scratch ingredients. Katie's is the only restaurant of its size that makes pizzas and pastas by hand for retail, raising the bar on packaged frozen food. Going the extra mile ensures freshness and quality in every hand-stretched wood-fired pizza. Following the 2021 renovation of its frozen production facility, Katie's frozen pizzas and pasta bakes became available at local St. Louis grocers Dierbergs Markets and Straubs. Growth continued with additional expansions into retailers including Fresh Market, Fresh Thyme, Kings-Balduccis, Mothers, Whole Foods Markets and more. About Katie's Pizza & Pasta Katie's Pizza & Pasta's promise is to create moments of enjoyment between friends and family through passion-filled food and warm hospitality. Katie Lee's dream to bring hand-made, in-house artisan and Neapolitan pizza to St. Louis began through one location under the ownership of her father, Tom Lee, in 2008. Today, KPP includes three locations. KPP Rock Hill opened in 2013 followed by the Town & Country location in 2017. The largest location opened in 2023 in downtown St. Louis' Ballpark Village featuring a pasta-making station, wood-fired grill, expansive patio, private events space and in-house market selling to-go items. Katie's portfolio of fresh and frozen pizzas, pastas and sauces are available at many grocery retailers and shipped nationwide. Since 2014, KPP's “Giveback Tuesday” program has donated over $470,000 to St. Louis-based charities. To learn more and sign up for our newsletter visit KatiesPizzaAndPasta.com. The Conversation is doing an Open Call for future guests of the show (thru Oct. 10th)- if you're interested in being a guest, please submit here: "The Conversation Art Podcast" - Guest Open Call (jotform.com) Brooklyn artist, former hardcore-band singer, and recurring figure in Bianca Bosker's ‘Get the Picture'), Liz Ainslie talks about: singing in the scream-core band Give Up while she was in college, including how she was able to maintain her vocal cords, and eventually crossing the divide in choosing between music and art; how she moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn 20 years ago (eventually taking over the master lease of an artist loft after initially having several roommates), how the neighborhood has changed over the decades, and how and why so many of her artist peers have managed to remain in New York despite the high rents; how she's currently organizing with her neighbors in the building to maintain the artist's loft laws; how she and the artists in her community piece together income from various sources, only one of them being their artmaking, and how several successful artists in that community have stuck around (as opposed to moving upstate, for example) to both give back and to stay connected; her day job and how she's able to work remotely, but still needs to find a coffee shop or other places to work away from her home; working for other artists, mainly in big Tribecca lofts, and the skills she learned, including the logistics of running professional artist studios; and how as an artist you should be very clear about everything from scheduling visits to respective responsibilities for artwork in your communications with fellow professionals.
Laurel Brown with the Inverness County Singers talks about what they do, what you can learn, and how much fun you can have.
This week Alice is joined by two UK gallery owners to discuss Open Call exhibitions - from the inside! When artists can sometimes feel submissions are a waste of time, two gallerists share why they choose to use this as part of their offer for artists, and the relationships which build from it. They let us in on some of the behind the scenes set-up, and what it really takes to organise and run an open call, and what an ideal submission looks like. We also push them on the tricky topic of costs and pricing - is this just a money-making scheme or after listening do you consider this a good investment. Let us know! Guarionex Rodriguez, Jr. is a Dominican-American artist based in Brooklyn, NY. He received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2011. His work explores the ways in which diasporic unity and niche musical movements have served in the creation of community and identity in the recent past and present. Simultaneously, he experiments with analog techniques to bring elements of abstraction to his figurative images. This manual practice heightens the intimacy of his work while additionally asking himself and the viewer to consider the ways in which we influence and are influenced by our surroundings. Rodriguez has been featured in various publications including Forgotten Lands, Hola Pardo, It's Nice That, and Musée Magazine. Currently exhibiting at Busan's Museum of Contemporary Art. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Open Call for Research Assistants in Developmental Interpretability, published by Jesse Hoogland on August 30, 2023 on LessWrong. We are excited to announce multiple positions for Research Assistants to join our six-month research project assessing the viability of Developmental Interpretability (DevInterp). This is a chance to gain expertise in interpretability, develop your skills as a researcher, build out a network of collaborators and mentors, publish in major conferences, and open a path towards future opportunities, including potential permanent roles, recommendations, and successive collaborations. Background Developmental interpretability is a research agenda aiming to build tools for detecting, locating, and understanding phase transitions in learning dynamics of neural networks. It draws on techniques from singular learning theory, mechanistic interpretability, statistical physics, and developmental biology. Position Details General info: Title: Research Assistant / Research Engineer. Location: Remote, with hubs in Melbourne and London. Duration: Until March 2024 (at minimum). Compensation: base salary is USD$35k per year, to be paid out as an independent contractor at an hourly rate. Timeline: Application Deadline: September 15th, 2023 Ideal Start Date: October 2023 How to Apply: Complete the application form by the deadline. Further information on the application process will be provided in the form. Who We Are The developmental interpretability research team consists of experts across a number of areas of mathematics, physics, statistics and AI safety. The principal researchers: Daniel Murfet, mathematician and SLT expert, University of Melbourne. Susan Wei, statistician and SLT expert, University of Melbourne. Jesse Hoogland, MSc. Physics, SERI MATS scholar, RA in Krueger lab We have a range of projects currently underway, led by one of these principal researchers and involving a number of other PhD and MSc students from the University of Melbourne and collaborators from around the world. In an organizational capacity you would also interact with Alexander Oldenziel and Stan van Wingerden. You can find us and the broader DevInterp research community on our Discord. Beyond the Developmental Interpretability research agenda, you can read our first preprint on scalable SLT invariants and check out the lectures from the SLT & Alignment summit. Overview of Projects Here's the selection of the projects underway, some of which you would be expected to contribute to. These tend to be on the more experimental side: Developing scalable estimates for SLT invariants: Invariants like the (local) learning coefficient and (local) singular fluctuation can signal the presence of "hidden" phase transitions. Improving these techniques can help us better identify these transitions. DevInterp of vision models: To what extent do the kinds of circuits studied in the original circuits thread emerge through phase transitions? DevInterp of program synthesis: In examples where we know there is rich compositional structure, can we see it in the singularities? Practically, this means studying settings like modular arithmetic (grokking), multitask sparse parity, and more complex variants. DevInterp of in-context learning & induction heads: Is the development of induction heads a proper phase transition in the language of SLT? More ambitiously, can we apply singular learning theory to study in-context learning and make sense of "in-context phase transitions." DevInterp of language models: Can we detect phase transitions in simple language models (like TinyStories). Can we, from these transitions, discover circuit structure? Can we extend these techniques to larger models (e.g., in the Pythia suite). DevInterp of reinforcement learning models: To what extent are phase transitions inv...
Welcome back to Season 3, Episode 206 of the Asian Hustle Network Podcast! We are very excited to have Steven Tang and Joanne Tabellija-Murphy on this week's show. Steven Tang is the co-founder and CEO of JUJU Spirits, creators of Asian-inspired alcohol brands Drunk Fruit and Yoju. JUJU is bringing Asian cocktails like yogurt soju and Asian fruits like lychee to a market that has historically seen very little Asian influence. Prior to this company, Steven built products for creators at tech companies like Instagram and Twitch. As an immigrant, he's always found the strongest connection to his heritage through food and beverage. Joanne Tabellija-Murphy joined Walmart in 2013 as the National Director of Constituent Relations in Corporate Affairs. As a seasoned change agent with a twenty-year history of transforming large international companies by leveraging institutional knowledge, Joanne is responsible for building partnerships and strategies that advance stakeholder advocacy and transform social change by building trust in the 4,700+ communities Walmart serves. Walmart announced that applications are officially open from now until Aug. 18 for our tenth annual Open Call event, being held this year Oct. 24-25. We are inviting small business owners and entrepreneurs to apply for the opportunity to pitch their products made, grown or assembled in the U.S. to be sold on Walmart or Sam's Club shelves, or at Walmart.com. Recorded in February 2023, Keli Maksud talks to Esteban Jefferson about his exhibition, MAY 25th, 2020, at 303 Gallery. A second iteration of the show will open at Goldsmiths CCA in October 2023. Esteban Jefferson's practice centers around issues of race, identity and the legacies of colonialism. Using photography, drawing, painting, and sound installation as forms of documentation, Jefferson paints the focal points of his compositions in great detail, creating a stark contrast between the subject or object in focus and the surrounding environment. The paintings are left intentionally unfinished, creating a raw style emblematic of his investigative process. Well known for his series, “Petit Palais”, first featured at White Columns, New York, in 2019, Jefferson's latest works consider the related symbolism of flags and toppling of equestrian monuments in New York, through the lens of racial and colonial legacies. Esteban Jefferson was born in New York City in 1989, and attended Columbia University. Recent group exhibitions include Art on the Grid, Public Art Fund, New York (2020); ESTAMOS BIEN: La Trienal, El Museo del Barrio, New York (2021) and Open Call, The Shed, New York (2021). Jefferson lives and works in New York City.
