Few figures have shaped fashion's visual language like Marie-Amélie Sauvé. From her formative years at French Vogue to her lasting collaborations with Nicolas Ghesquière, she has navigated an industry that thrives on change while staying true to her creative convictions. In this episode, Sauvé reflects on the golden era of editorial freedom, the founding of her own magazine, Mastermind, and why true innovation demands risk. She also shares how yoga sharpens her creative discipline, why she gravitates toward brands in need of reinvention, and what she believes is fashion's biggest challenge today. A rare glimpse into the mind of one of the industry's most influential yet elusive figures. "Mastermind isn't just about fashion. It's about cinema, architecture, politics—because if you only look at fashion, you miss the bigger picture." - Marie-Amélie Sauvé Episode Highlights: Growing up with fashion in France – Fashion was as much a part of daily life as literature and gastronomy in her upbringing, shaping her early perspective. Landing an internship at French Vogue – Her mother's love for fashion led to an opportunity at Vogue Paris, where she was first exposed to industry legends like André Leon Talley, Helmut Newton, and Guy Bourdin. The golden era of French Vogue – Describes the unparalleled creative freedom of the magazine at the time, where editors and photographers could push boundaries without advertiser interference. Why she left Vogue to go freelance – She wanted a deeper understanding of how clothes were made and how designers shaped the industry, rather than just styling full looks in editorials. How yoga shapes her creative process – She practices Iyengar yoga daily, valuing its emphasis on precision and discipline, which mirrors her approach to fashion and creative direction. Why she created Mastermind – She wanted a magazine that balanced fashion with architecture, politics, cinema, and philosophy, giving equal weight to journalism and imagery. The longstanding creative relationship with Nicolas Ghesquière – She and Nicolas "grew up together" in the industry, sharing an obsession with research, reinvention, and pushing creative boundaries. Why true innovation requires risk – She reflects on how the most memorable fashion moments come from pushing boundaries, rather than playing it safe within industry expectations. Fashion's democratic shift – Acknowledges that while fashion is now more accessible, standing out requires an even stronger creative perspective and sense of individuality. What's contemporary now? – Time. In an era of constant acceleration, she believes the most valuable thing is having enough time to slow down, focus, and create with intention. For over 100 years Women's Wear Daily has been the bible for the fashion industry, and its archives include numerous hidden contributions of Black designers and models. Now that history has been gathered in a stunning new book, BLACK IN FASHION, by Tonya Blazio-Licorish and Tara Donaldson, showcasing the indelible influence of Black culture on a global scale. On Episode 5 of Rodeo Drive-The Podcast, host Lyn Winter spoke with the authors about the book and the revelations they found in the WWD archives. “Fashion has a flawed public history because it hasn't included all the voices,” says Blazio-Licorish, also a visual culture historian and editor with PMC Media Archives. “We were always there, and not just there in marginal roles, but in important roles, in roles that were shaping fashion,” adds Donaldson, most recently WWD's executive editor and Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Fairchild Media. Dating back as early as the Harlem Renaissance, the Black community was making its mark on clothing and style, from Black dolls for young Black children, early fashion shows, business associations, and fashionable scenes like at The Cotton Club. The authors single out early “influencers” such as Josephine Baker, who even had a hosiery color named in her honor, the dancer Katherine Dunham, who was all the rage in 1940s France, and then the Black models, including Pat Cleveland and Bethann Hardison, who shook up global fashion at the famed 1973 Battle of Versailles. The late André Leon Talley recalled this momentous event in conversation with the authors before his passing. “You could almost just reach out and touch the energy they gave in the air. It was like quiet thunder, and because everyone saw that and felt that at the battle, French designers – Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent – they started wanting black models.”Black fashion has been intertwined with politics – and BLACK IN FASHION explores how clothing reflected the moment:“During civil rights, that time was really about respectability politics,” explains Donaldson. “It was coming in your Sunday best, to assert dignity. It was a kind of a polite request for human rights. By the time you get to the 70s, the mood changes, the look changes…then the Black Panther movement, it's more powerful, it's more assertive…You have the leather jackets, you have the turtlenecks, you have the berets. And then we see that evolve even into the 2020s. And there's the branded T-shirts, Black Lives Matter.”Finally, the story is still unfolding. Black designers are still not getting the high level industry jobs they deserve, argue Blazio-Licorish and Donaldson, and are even ambivalent about being labeled as Black. So Blazio-Licorish says they finished on a question: “We purposefully left the conversation open to, who's next, who's now, and what do they have to say about where fashion is going to go?”Season 5 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, and the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau.Season 5 Credits:Executive Producer and Host: Lyn WinterOn behalf of the Rodeo Drive Committee: Kay Monica RoseScriptwriter and Editorial Advisor: Frances AndertonEditor and Videographer: Hans FjellestadTheme music by Brian BanksProduction Assistant: Isabelle Alfonso.Listen, subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.Join us on Instagram @rodeodrive Hosted on Acast. For the third episode in our design series, we're talking fashion design through the lens of the 2006 classic The Devil Wears Prada. The film is having a moment on the internet. We're here to revisit it with fresh eyes, and with two experts in fashion: Jo Ellison, the editor of our luxury magazine HTSI, and Rob Armstrong, our men's style columnist (OK, he's also our US financial columnist). My guest on The Green Dream today is the legendary former Vogue editor André Leon Talley, and no, he is not speaking to us from the grave, though if anyone could, and would, it would be André! André and I met for our interview at the Mona Bismarck American Center in Paris, where he was overseeing the installation of "Little Black Dress”. This week, a year after his death at 73 from Covid-19, a large swath of his estate is up for auction at Christie's in New York, to benefit two of his favorite places of worship, the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem and the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina, where he grew up. The Christie's auction is how this interview fits into The Green Dream remit: if you buy well, and, boy, did André buy well (and was gifted very well too), your belongings can have a good long life after you are gone – be it heirlooms for friends and family, or estate sales open to the public. As I say often in my British Vogue sustainability column, in interviews, and in conference speeches, the most sustainable thing you can do is buy less, buy better. We've even turned into a hashtag: #buylessbuybetter.Read the transcript of this episodeGet to know Dana Thomas and her book FashionopolisDiscover the fashion brand Another TomorrowExplore the new Green Dream website, thegreendream.studio

They fell in love with fashion. They remixed looks, dressed our favorite characters, ignited the industry, took what others might've seen as scraps and made them beautiful. They carved out a space for themselves. Featuring Jeffrey Banks, Ceci, Romeo Hunte, Law Roach, Letesha Renee, Darnell-Jamal Lisby, Miko Underwood, Brandice Daniel, Jasmine Guy, Connor McKnight, Monica Miller, April Walker, Monica Morrow, Boz Bradshaw and Randy Cousin. Syllabus: Throughout history, Black people have always had that “special sauce” that has created a style tradition that is uniquely resourceful and innovative. The book Stylin': African-American Expressive Culture, from Its Beginnings to the Zoot Suit takes us through that history. Black people have seen the influence of their style travel across the globe, and the book, How to Slay: Inspiration from the Queens and Kings of Black Style, provides a complete survey of how we “slay.” We all have a story about that certain thing we wore that made us feel special or seen. Dressed in Dreams: A Black Girl's Love Letter to the Power of Fashion inspires us to remember what those things were, and explains how it's vital in keeping our culture alive. When host Kimberly Jenkins had the opportunity to meet the late fashion legend André Leon Talley, he joined her at Parsons School of Design as she hosted a screening of the documentary, The Gospel According to André, in effort to give Talley his flowers. Fashion veteran Bethann Hardison also has a motherly connection to a “Different World” star referenced in our upcoming episode on HBCU style. How many Black fashion designers throughout history can you name? Podcast guest Elizabeth Way provides us with the much-needed book, Black Designers in American Fashion, as an essential reference guide. Guest Darnell-Jamal Lisby penned this profile on the admired Willi Smith and speaks about Smith's design approach in this episode. The late designer Patrick Kelly showed Black fashion design hopefuls just how far you could make it in an industry known for being famously exclusive. Which is why we recommend the piece, “Patrick Kelly Was the Jackie Robinson of High Fashion”. A contemporary of our podcast guest Jeffrey Banks, along with the late designers Willi Smith and Patrick Kelly, our profile on Stephen Burrows celebrates the fashion designer who dressed our bodies to dance and move. From humble beginnings in Durham, North Carolina to walking the halls at American Vogue, André Leon Talley paved an unbelievable life and career for himself doing what he loved most, talking about fashion. He is described by friends and colleagues as being larger than life and an expert fashion historian who had an opinion on everything. Recording this episode was such a joy because everything that André did, he exuted his obsession with his love for fashion. In this episode we discuss his internship under Diana Vreeland, his attributions he made during his almost decade long stay at Vogue(where he became the creative director), and the racial boundaries he broke to push the fashion world into a more accepting and inclusive space. André was an icon among icons and as Will.I.Am said, “the Nelson Mandela of couture, the Kofi Annan of what you got on.” Dm us or comment on one of our instagram photos your favorite André quote or André-ism!

We also talk about how our own mental health was affected while working at certain jobs and what resources could have helped. Then we end with talk of humans evolving to find other ways to be happy. Andre Leon Talley was a unique and giant figure in fashion. Subsisting on Vogues from a tender age, armed with an Ivy League education, Talley became a chronicler and arbiter of style and culture. And he navigated these two worlds more skilled and informed than most - landing positions at WWD, Ebony, and (most notably) Vogue magazines. As a writer, creative director, mentor, bon vivant, Talley occupied a singular space as a well-versed, towering Black figure prone to fantastical prognostications steeped in erudite references. He knew his stuff and centered his world in one of pomp and circumstance as detailed in his recent memoir, The Chiffon Trenches. But Talley was a complicated figure whose legacy is rife with complexities. He championed many Black talents over decades but categorically ignored others, building his inner circle with white socialites, power brokers, and designers. He indulged in the excesses and riches of luxury but kept rooted in the humility of his faith. And in the end, while willing to expose the ills of the fashion world, one could say Talley was wholly defined by it. In this episode we discuss the many layers to Talley's legacy, challenges being the only one, when your excellence outshines everyone else in the room, and again, why this is a cautionary tale. With so many (amazing!) guests already lined up for 2022, we didn't want your favorite source of fashion news and outfit inspiration to disappear! So we've shortened the length but kept all the great content to give you a bonus episode this week! The iconic André Leon Talley has passed away at age 73. He was a pioneer in the fashion industry, a "pharaoh of fabulosity", and his absence will be felt in the industry as we move into yet another fashion month in the coming weeks. Prada kicked off their FW22 season with a star studded menswear show featuring Jeff Goldblum and Kyle MacLachlan. With the world (still) in such a tumultuous place, are we looking to brands to ground us or give us a way of escaping reality through clothing? And is New York state finally getting a sustainability law on the books? If passed there could be some real monetary consequences for major brands like Nike and LVMH group, but we think it's about time these responsibilities are being put on the shoulders of major corporations instead of the consumer. Plus, Anna Grace powers through with some fabulous outfits despite being sick and Katie tries out Rent the Runway. Don't miss it! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vervepodcast/message

Abby has notes on the loss of André Leon Talley, the very fun new Scream movie, Jamie Lynn Spears, Abbott Elementary critics, and West Elm Caleb. Then she's joined by her friend and editor of Page Six Style, Elana Fishman, to talk about one of their most beloved topics: Taylor Alison Swift. They get into her style evolution (including how it pairs with her music and how she uses fashion to telegraph a new era), the methods they employ for taking in new Taylor albums, what might be next in 2022, how Tree Paine, Taylor's longtime publicist, gets it all done. Oh, and that time Elana met Taylor...plus much more Taylor talk, that even non-Swifties will enjoy.

Fashion is buzzing about former Vogue Magazine creative director and writer Andre Leon Talley's soon to be released memoir, 'Chiffon Trenches'. Leaked excerpts from the book details key events (some salacious, racist, and hurtful) from this bon vivant's 50 years working at the top echelon of fashion. He writes of being exiled and left emotional scarred by the industry in recent years, most notable by his former champion and employer Anna Wintour who he claims has come to find him too fat, old and uncool. No doubt fashion is a brutal business but those who operate at the very top where Talley satellite'd, tend to protect each other with plum employment and professional homage to the very end. Talley's distinction, however, is as the lone black professional who's worked at this level in the industry. In this episode, we discuss Talley's career. Was he building community or pre-occupied with his own profile? Does he represent a cautionary tale especially for blacks in the business. And why it's important that he has claimed his legacy. We hope you enjoy this conversation and as always we ask that you keep in touch, subscribe, rate this episode and follow us @TheConversations.Podcast for more!
