Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world. Last week we had a fantastic reaction to our episode on addiction with Brian Pennie and Lynn Ruane. This week we're back in The Therapy Room, asking our resident psychologists Louize Carroll and Dr. Tony Bates how they work with someone dealing with addiction.  Both Louize and Tony have extensive experience with addiction in all forms, from drugs to alcohol, food to work. They explain why we need to move away from the stereotypes and see addiction for what it is, a coping mechanism to deal with pain we cannot bear. Tony and Louize discuss how in the modern world addiction permeates all of us, how rules around dual diagnosis impact models of care and why we need to be wary of certain prescribed medications that only continue to numb our pain.  Follow Niall on IG @bressie, TikTok @niallbreslin, FB @whereismymindpodcast and Twitter @nbrez and visit his website: www.niallbreslin.com. Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world. Addiction is a topic we've wanted to cover for a long time on the podcast due to the complex relationship between mental health and addiction. Addiction rarely exists without some history of suffering and trauma.  Senator Lynn Ruane and Brian Pennie, PhD, are two leading powerhouses in the addiction space in Ireland. Both have had their own lived experience, growing up in drug and poverty ravished areas of Dublin, and advocate for better systems and supports for those experiencing addiction. The conversation is had through a social structures lens, as evidence suggests that focusing on the individual has not worked thus far. Lynn and Brian discuss how we still need to focus on destigmatising drug use and bringing humanity back to individuals, how poverty is the core issue destroying communities and what approaches they are advocating for to protect those in vulnerable positions.  Follow Niall on IG @bressie, TikTok @niallbreslin, FB @whereismymindpodcast and Twitter @nbrez and visit his website: www.niallbreslin.com. Its fair to say that Lynn Ruane not your “typical” Irish politician – she's from a very working class background in Dublin, developed a drug addiction in her teens, became a mother at 15, and has generally had a life that might be called ‘unconventional' in the context of politics in Ireland. And yet that's what makes Lynn such an interesting and effective politician – she represents a huge yet traditionally under-represented part of Ireland, shakes things up in government building and shines a light on some long-standing and accepted injustices that have arguably have been allowed to last for far too long. Lynn is also so much fun; she's insightful, open and honest and we chat about all sorts of interesting stuff, including how her passion can be judged as aggression, the classist politician that inspired the title of her book ‘People Like Me', and why Ireland's drug laws are now so outdated and in need of reform. We also had a lot of the regulars phoning in to speak to Senator Ruane, including ‘Ballymun Paschal', The Two Norries, and her fellow Senator, David Norris. Aisling Creegan's childhood was dominated by an abusive, alcoholic mother, who tortured her at every turn. From insults through beatings and being threatened with a butcher's knife, Aisling endured unthinkable suffering at the hands of the woman who should have loved her unconditionally. Yet in the midst of this trauma, Aisling was able to rely on the one person she knew she could trust - herself. Possessed of an incredible imagination and remarkable resilience, Aisling found escape in the little things in life: lying in a field on a sunny day; drawing; Matchbox cars; and her teddy bear, Panda. Aisling's power to imagine an alternative world enabled her to hold on and make it to adolescence and the freedom she had longed for since childhood. But the scars of the past take time to heal, and when Aisling suffered a breakdown it took her on a surprising path to freedom - and forgiveness. In advance of this Saturday’s march we’ve put together a few clips of some of the wonderful people we’ve spoken to over the last few months. Firstly, UN Special Rapporteur Leilani Farha tells us why housing is a human right and not a commodity for Fine Gael to trust to the market. Then Hugh Brennan, of the O Cualann Cohousing Scheme, explains how they build communities through really affordable homes in a model that can be replicated. Next 2 Activists from Take Back The City tell us, from within the occupied Frederick Street building, why acts of civil disobedience are necessary when the State puts the rights of land hoarders above the human right to adequate housing. Actor, playwright and activist, Grace Dyas, asks why don’t we value each other more and suggests that by putting people at the centre of what we do we can lift everyone up. Poet and writer Emmet Kirwan talks about living in a country governed by those who care about manners than corruption, and how those living in poverty are seen to be somehow deserving of it, while corporate and political corruption is excused away as just the way of the world. Finally, Senator Lynn Ruane talks about her own experience of raising these issues with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. Social class and impact of class on reducing the opportunities of children growing up in working class and disadvantaged areas is given little air time in Irish media and politics. Class is not supposed to be an issue in Ireland. How often do we hear discussions in the media on what it is like to grow up in Tallaght, Jobstown, Darndale, Finglas in Dublin, Moyross in Limerick, Ballybeg in Waterford? How many presenters of Irish media shows are from these areas –almost none. Class is silenced in Ireland. Poverty is hidden. Here on Reboot Republic we are breaking that silence and talking with Lynn Ruane, a Senator and former President of Trinity College Student’s Union, who is from Tallaght and worked in addiction and community work.  Lynn has made the issue of social class a core concern that she has raised in the Seanad, ways in which we can improve the real opportunities of children and women and men living in disadvantaged areas, and the need to understand the reality of the trauma inflicted from poverty and inequality. Education is a key way to change things. Lynn recommends paying women from disadvantaged areas to go to college. Drawing on Latin American educator, Paolo Freire, she speaks about an education that raises people’s consciousness, gives them freedom to be who they can be and change their own world and the society around them. My guests in this episode are Senator Lynne Ruane and Joe Caslin, recorded at the Body&Soul music and arts festival in front of a live audience. Senator Lynn Ruane From Tallaght in Dublin, Lynn is a senator and campaigner for drug reform and other social justice issues, as well as being a powerful voice for many of those unrepresented in our political system. An early school leaver and single mother of two, she got away from a life of drugs and went on to set up addiction programmes before becoming a mature student, a student union leader, and more recently, entering the world of politics as an independent senator. Now in her early 30s Lynne is a passionate force for change. Joe Caslin Also in his early 30s, Roscommon born Joe Caslin is a street artist and school teacher who lives in Tullamore. He made international news with the Claddagh Embrace, a giant street art work featuring two men embracing, which he launched during Ireland’s 2015 marriage equality referendum. Joe is a tireless educator who goes above and beyond for his students. The loss of several of his students to suicide motivated him to create works for a project he called Our Nations Sons. His latest project, The Volunteers, uses large scale provocative street art to draw attention to drug addiction, mental health and the issues affecting Asylum Seekers in the Direct Provision system. ........... About the podcast The Love and Courage podcast features interviews with inspirational people who are making a real difference in the world today.
