It is Á Tea for Three this time with Susan Quirke and Ruairí McKiernan. This all started with previous podcast guest, Laura Murphy, poet and activist. She had introduced me to her dear Susan Quirke a few years back and online we chatted a little and more so when her plans to move over this side of the world were starting to unfold. It is a big move from Clare to this continent and when Susan and her husband Ruairí slowly made their way to Mullumbimby, I was honoured to welcome them to the area and share some cuppas. After a few Barry's without a microphone, I had to have them on the podcast for ye as there was so much gold in these chats and insights they bring bridging the same worlds I have for many years. Oh my heart do I love how they show up, articulate things, and dig deep. This chat journeyed through their complex feels to arrive on stolen land, to their creative processes, burnout and mental health, all the shades of colonisation and the Irish stereotypes and human-ing beyond the boxes of that. Ruairí and Susan are just divine creatives and activists on beautiful missions and I am so lucky to now call them neighbours on their adventure to see what happens on this land for them. I know ye will fall in love with their spirit and grace. It is an honour to catch the start of their journey here on podcast for ye.Susan Quirke is an advanced certified meditation teacher, ceremony holder, and a leader of mass meditation experiences. She has brought meditation to thousands of people throughout Ireland and globally. Susan is also a multi award-winning social entrepreneur for her work in the field of mental health and wellbeing. Sarah Clancy is a well-known poet, activist and commentator who works in community development in County Clare where she now lives. Sarah grew up in Galway immersed in the world of ponies and horses which led her to working all over Ireland and later in Australia and New Zealand. Although she dabbled in poetry in her youth, it wasn't until her 30s that she really found her poetic voice. And when she did, things really took off. It wasn't long before she was winning awards, performing on major stages and on radio. She also released 3 separate poetry collections, published by Lapwing Press and Salmon Poetry. During this same period Sarah delved deeper into the world of social justice, both through academia, and through community organising and campaigning. This is when I first met Sarah. I was running the SpunOut youth organisation which was based in Galway at the time. We ended up involved in different campaigns together and over the years I always found her to have one of the sharpest and most insightful minds I've ever encountered. This conversation covers a lot of ground and although it's a long one, it's worth going the distance and listening to the end, or perhaps in different sittings. In it, we talk about Sarah's early years, her travels, some of the campaigns she has been involved in, as well as her courageous and difficult personal journey of reporting the man who abused her. Sarah also talks about how poetry helped her navigate this particularly turbulent period, as well as discover an unexpected platform for social and political expression. I had a couple of minor issues with the online sound recording which resulted in me turning my microphone down but in general the quality should be okay. I'm working on improving the overall sound recording for remote recordings and appreciate your support and patience while I work on this. As always, your support in promoting, sharing, subscribing, rating and reviewing the podcast is hugely appreciated, especially as it helps get voices like Sarah's out into the world.

In this episode I chat with Blessing Dada. Blessing is a student in Youth & Community Development at Technological University Dublin. She is an outspoken, passionate activist on all sorts of social justice issues, especially mental health awareness (with her own lived experiences) among Black and other ethnic minority communities in Ireland. She is also involved in organisations such as SpunOut and See Change. I enjoyed our conversation so much. As a young Black Irish/Nigerian woman, her lived experiences are vital to understanding the lack of supports for people of colour here in Ireland in the world of mental health. As a therapist, I learned a lot during our chat about inclusivity and the importance of stepping outside my own privilege. Enjoy x

This podcast focuses on the important topic of mental health and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on rural life. Contributors to the podcast shared their own personal experiences and knowledge in this area, these included: Jonathan Dwyer from Devilsbit Macra na Feirme in Tipperary, Founder of Make the Moove mental health workshops; Ian Power, CEO of SpunOut.ie; and Carmel Dawson, Public Relations Officer of the Irish Countrywomen's Association (ICA). Ian Power discusses the impact of Covid-19 that has resulted in restrictions for young people, in particular a lack of social contact. Research carried out by SpunOut.ie shows that young people in rural Ireland are twice as likely to say that they feel isolated at this time when compared to those in urban areas. He also discusses the work of SpunOut.ie to support the mental health of young people during the pandemic, and his hopes for the future. Jonathan Dwyer was alarmed by the high suicide rate in North Tipperary and Laois, and how this was affecting his own community. As a result, he started the Make the Moove mental health workshops, which looks into the mental health pressures for young people in rural Ireland and the lessons they have learned from examining similar international examples. Carmel Dawson discusses how the pandemic has disrupted people's lives and the problems it has caused in the form of a lack of services and isolation in her hometown of Tullow in Co. Carlow. She also discusses how the ICA and its Federations have adapted to the restrictions.
New research by the ESRI has shown that 40% of 17 years olds have never spoken to their parents about sex - and a quarter of young people expressed regret over the first time they had sex… So why aren’t we talking more about sex with our teenage kids? On today’s episode I speak with Ian Power, who is the CEO of Spunout.ie - Ireland’s youth information website, inclusive of a free 24/7 text service called “Text 50808”, which provides support for people going through mental health or emotional crisis - big or small. Ian and I had an incredibly rich conversation on the very important topic of 'Creating Space for Connection' and practical ways in which we can use emotional intelligence to foster more inclusive spaces. Specifically, we discuss the role of empathy and self-awareness and how these two emotional skills enable us to deepen the connection with ourselves and others. This episode is part of a larger series of conversations discussion Mental health and Wellbeing. Creating space for connection is a central part of proactively managing our wellbeing, as connection is rooted in our need for love and belonging. Science has shown that connection to aids our mental health in many different ways: reducing our levels of anxiety and depression, regulating our emotions, and improving our self-esteem (to name a few). But beyond mental health, another reason why I felt this episode was contextually relevant is because if you look at many of the global news headlines - whether that be on racial injustice, growing inequality, or grossly skewed political views, they all emphasize fragmentation and disconnection within our communities. This conversation addresses practical ways we might better come to understand one another, so that we may evolve as a human collective.
We were talking threesomes on the show after an article on that very topic appeared on spunout.ie website. Should teens be informed about this...
