This week I'm in Rochester talking to commercial illustrator and painter John Kastner. We're taking about what got him into commercial illustration and what made him shift to fine art. I grew up surrounded by John's work and he was a big influence on my work.
Aston Stephens is a UK based independent record label owner. Boss Tuneage Records has been putting out music for well over 30 years. Aston and I met by chance I think through either Brock Pytel or John Kastner in the early 2000's. Aston put out the first Four Square Record titled "When Weeks Were Weekends" in the fall of 2001. I do know that Aston and I might have talked on the phone once before the deal was struck. I might of had email back then. Aston is important to the punk rock and independent scene in North America and Europe as he put allot of people together with no agenda or method only to connect people and build a network. A fun conversation with a soldier of punk rock! John Sutton is the ex bass player of Winnipeg folk rockers "the Weakerthans". John has also been in other bands like "All Systems Go" (with John Kastner) "Sandfly fever" and even my band "Four Square". He now plays in a few bands out of Toronto like "Arson", "rusty" and "Sids Kids". John was the first real friend I made in Winnipeg when I moved there in 1992. After leaving Regina, John moved to Winnipeg and lived there until the success of "the Weakerthans" allowed him to move to Toronto. He currently works at the Air Canada Centre as a broadcast technician and plays in about 100 bands. In the Podcast we talked about music and how early punk influences changed both of us with our sense of community and the idea of what success actually is. As one of my oldest and dearest friends, it was a pleasure having John on the podcast. Thom and I go back about 18 years. I recorded his first album with one of his first bands called 'the Carnations'. We've been good friends ever since. Thom has always been into making music and can pretty much write any type of song you want. When Thom joined the band 'All Systems Go' [John Kastner and Mark Arnold], He wrote about 8 songs that fit perfectly with the musical style of the band. Pretty impressive stuff!! We sat down at his recording studio and talked about music, what it's like to be good at music and school. It was a good time. Thanks Thom for the conversation!!
