Two artists who have left an indelible mark on American music are, in actual fact, a married couple with a brand new album on the verge of dropping. The Bangles' Vicki Peterson and The Cowsills' John Cowsill join us! Differences between these two abound: New England vs. Southern California origins, 60s family pop vs. 80s girl-band rock, drums vs. guitar; but the parallels are even more striking....Both Vicki and John were raised by Top 40 Radio, they began performing very young and played in extraordinarily influential bands with their siblings. And so importantly, they share the honor of touching audiences with music that became lifetime soundtracks. Their new collaborative album, 'Long After the Fire' (including the about-to-drop-on-March 21st-single, 'Is Anybody Here') features covers of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill. It was an uphill battle to acquire the rights to license the music, but thanks to Vicki's tenacity and their producer's rich industry knowledge, Vicki and John have leaned the expanse of their talent and exquisite harmonies into this very personal project.Vicki tells us about her rock stardom ride with the Bangles and John shares his early worries that having entered professional show biz at the age of seven, his career chose him and therefore the subsequent attention often felt embarrassing. We also talk about, 'Family Band: The Cowsills Story', a documentary that Weezy made about the Cowsills. We discuss John's time with the Beach Boys, Vicki's collaborations with her sister-in-law, Susan Cowsill and Vicki and John give each other the business with the well-earned nicknames, ‘Child Star' and ‘Rock Star'. Plus, we have a round of IMDB Roulette for the ages and an exclusive, in-studio performance!Path Points of InterestVicki Peterson and John CowsillVicki Peterson and John Cowsill on YoutubeA Thousand Times Video Vicki and John on InstagramVicki and John on FacebookJohn CowsillJohn Cowsill on FacebookJohn Cowsill on InstagramJohn Cowsill on WikiJoey's SongVicki Peterson on WikiThe BanglesVicki Peterson on FacebookNorman's Rare Guitars DocumentaryViet Nam: The Way That Changed America - Apple TV
Drew Barrymore spent her childhood charming audiences on movie screens and cramming cocaine up her nose at the most exclusive clubs in the country. Her breakout role as Gertie in E.T.: The Extraterrestrial rocketed her to such far-reaching fame that she became a regular at Studio 54 when she was only 7 years old. Her early taste for unchaperoned nightlife would lure her into other exceptionally adult addictions, nearly extinguishing her flourishing film career before Drew reached high school. As Drew's grandfather and father before her already proved, no one acts – or parties – quite like a Barrymore. No one crashes and burns quite like a Barrymore, either. Send us a textThank you for tuning in! On today's show I am joined by Rachel Bailit and John Lacy, both experienced actors and teachers in the field of entertainment. In this episode we take a look at the dark side of being a child actor and how the challenges faced by young Hollywood inspired a new independent film written and directed by John Lacy. The movie is entitled "Everyone Asked About You" and stars Lacy, and Rachel Bailit as a former child actor who tries to make it as an adult actor, but faces a lot of adversity along the way. It is a fascinating look at how becoming famous at a young age can have an impact on a star's adulthood. «Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory» ist unser brandneues Sounds! Are Hollywood's youngest stars in any less danger now than those of past eras? We pose this question to Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman's Claudia Lamb. At age 11 she was cast as Mary's daughter Heather Hartman in the groundbreaking Norman Lear soap parody. Claudia offers a front row view to her traumatic life as a 70s child star, at the mercy of her abusive parents and insight into how she gnawed through their shackles to pursue a radio journalism career and become a champion for today's child actors.Claudia was a gourmet meal ticket to her criminally exploitative parents who squandered all her money as she cranked out hundreds of commercials and print ads as a toddler who was shoved into the spotlight and dragged by her angry and brutal mother to audition after audition.Claudia candidly conveys the extent of the violence and terror inflicted by her narcissistically cruel mother as Claudia's labor, throughout her childhood supported the entire family while alienating her five brothers. Her talent and intelligence branded her as a go-to for commercial producers, where, as a stand-by, she frequently replaced the principal. Then at the age of 11, after being pummeled by her mother for a poor math grade, (working kids needed to keep their grades above a C average) Claudia was dragged to a cattle-call populated by every chubby, frizzy haired 13 year old in Hollywood. Claudia, a scrawny, pigtailed 11 year old nailed the reading and was instantly cast as Heather Hartman where she treasured her three years on the set of Norman Lear's outrageous, unprecedented soap satire.Claudia tells of marathon filming sessions, (five episodes a week) with no cue cards or teleprompters. (Louise Lasser would scribble her lines on the kitchen table!) She celebrates the immense talents of Mary Kay Place, Martin Mull and Fred Willard, and shares fabulous anecdotes about Donny and Jimmy Osmond (The Donny & Marie Show filmed next door) and how Claudia was nearly crushed by a mob of fans who spotted her chatting up some Osmonds and jumped a fence to get in on that action.Claudia is frank in her assessment of the adults who let her down as she endured her mother's abuse. Her bruises were in clear view of the wardrobe department. At the age of 18, Claudia put Hollywood in her rear view and became an award winning journalist who now speaks to parents about the reality and dangers posed to children by show business.Weezy offers a supporting view, recommending Demi Lovato's new documentary on Hulu and Disney + called Child Star. Fritz is captivated by the Hulu series adaptation of Patrick Radden Keefe's best-seller about “The Troubles” in Ireland, Say Nothing. When he was 11 years old, actor Haley Joel Osment was nominated for an Oscar. His resume was already long and impressive, but his role as Cole Sear in M. A bond's yield is a function of its market price, which can fluctuate; therefore, a bond's YTW is not “locked in” until the bond is purchased, and your yield at time of purchase may be different from the yield shown here. The “locked in” YTW is not guaranteed; you may receive less than the YTW of the bonds in the Bond Account if you sell any of the bonds before maturity or if the issuer defaults on the bond. Public Investing charges a markup on each bond trade. See our Fee Schedule. Bond Accounts are not recommendations of individual bonds or default allocations. The bonds in the Bond Account have not been selected based on your needs or risk profile. See https://public.com/disclosures/bond-account to learn more. Learn more about your ad choices. When he was 11 years old, actor Haley Joel Osment was nominated for an Oscar. His resume was already long and impressive, but his role as Cole Sear in M. Night Shyamalan's psychological thriller The Sixth Sense cemented him as an acting prodigy and a big star. Money, fame, and accolades rapidly flew in his direction. But Osment managed to avoid a lot of the common hurdles that early fame can bring. This week, he talks to Anna Sale about the many factors that led to his relatively smooth child star experience and his continued positive outlook in an industry that can be cruel and unpredictable. This week, Van and I dissect conversations Demi Lovato had with fellow child stars in her Child Star documentary on Hulu. Trigger warning, we will discuss topics such as disordered eating, sexual assault/child abuse, and suicide. With a truly incredible collection of celebrities, this documentary had so much potential, but did it live up to the combined star power of its subjects, including Kenan Thompson, Christina Ricci, Alyson Stoner, Raven, Drew Barrymore, and Jojo Siwa? Please note, this episode was recorded in September, so the episode of Best Week Ever Podcast we reference about Janet Jackson can be found here! Also, we initially were using the wrong pronouns for Alyson Stoner who uses they/them pronouns. Please forgive this oversight!
