On this episode of Metrology Today, we're joined by Greg Cenker—industry veteran, educator, and now a driving force at IndySoft—for a deep dive into the business and technical realities of running a calibration lab. Greg shares his path from the Marine Corps to aerospace, power, Fluke, SpaceX, and beyond, illustrating just how small (and interconnected) the metrology world really is. We discuss: How buying the wrong equipment can quietly cost millions—and how to actually model those costs The reality of probability of false reject/false accept, and why most labs underestimate their true risk Justifying equipment and software investments to management (with real ROI examples) The limitations and frustrations of industry standards and why committees move so slowly Cross-checks, continuous improvement, and what every lab manager should know What's coming next from IndySoft, including force and balance modules and smarter calibration workflows Greg's upcoming article and free cost modeling spreadsheet in Quality Magazine: https://www.qualitymag.com/articles/98705-how-much-does-that-calibration-test-really-cost Whether you're a bench tech, a lab manager, or just metrology-curious, this episode will open your eyes to what's really at stake in calibration—and how small decisions add up to big dollars. Listen now, and let us know: Can you think of a single product that isn't affected by measurement?

We spoke with Ryan Bennett and Trang from Fluke and Fortive to understand how recent tariff changes are affecting their companies. They explained that the pace of these changes is extremely fast, creating a sense of crisis for their businesses. Because tariffs can be announced and implemented with little warning, companies are left scrambling to respond, often without clear guidance on what will happen next. When someone successfully moderates their drinking or says no to alcohol in situations where they previously would have reached for a drink, they tend to view it as a fluke and go back to worrying about when they'll slip up again. But was it a fluke? As humans, we often attribute our wins to external factors - the circumstances, other people, or pure luck - rather than acknowledging our own role in making better choices. However, this mindset of not taking credit for your achievements actually makes it harder to create lasting change. So, it's time to start recognizing the agency you exercised in these moments, even if it didn't feel present in the moment. Sobriety coach Adriana Cloud is back on the show this week, helping you explore the thoughts and feelings that drive successful choices around alcohol, so you can create a blueprint for repeating those results over and over, instead of dismissing your progress as a fluke. In this episode we sit down with Brian Klaas, author of Fluke, and get into the existential lessons and grander meaning for a life well-lived (once one finally accepts the power and influence of randomness, chaos, and chance). In addition, we learn not to fall prey to proportionality bias - the tendency for human brains to assume big, historical, or massively impactful events must have had big causes and/or complex machinations underlying their grand outcomes. It's one of the cognitive biases that most contributes to conspiratorial thinking and grand conspiracy theories, one that leads to an assumption that there must be something more going on when big, often unlikely, events make the evening news. Yet, as Brian explains, events big and small are often the result of random inputs in complex systems interacting in ways that are difficult to predict.Previous EpisodesBrian KlaasFlukeHow Minds ChangeDavid McRaney's TwitterDavid McRaney's BlueSkyYANSS TwitterYANSS FacebookNewsletterKittedPatreon

In this episode, Brian Klaas explains the concept of whether things are a fluke or fate, and explores how embracing uncertainty can lead to a living a fuller life. Brian makes the case that randomness and chaos might be exactly what makes our lives matter so much, and how we tend to worship at the “Altar of Progress in the Church of Control.” We make plans, set goals, and these are good things, but we only have so much control. And Brian teaches that accepting this can be a relief, because the point isn’t to control everything, but to influence what we can. Key Takeaways: The concept of happiness derived from intrinsic values rather than material possessions and social status. The importance of thoughts and actions in shaping our lives and experiences. Exploration of chaos theory and the unpredictability of life. The idea that we control nothing but influence everything, emphasizing the ripple effects of our actions. Personal stories illustrating how random events can profoundly impact lives. The empowering nature of recognizing the influence of our choices. The tension between control and acceptance of life’s randomness. The critique of societal values that prioritize material success over personal fulfillment and relationships. Encouragement to embrace individual uniqueness and create for personal expression rather than external validation. This episode is a recording of an X Space I had the pleasure of hosting on March 24th. It features a compelling debate between Kevin Brent Cook and Grain of Salt on Josh Mandell's precise and publicly stated prediction that Bitcoin would hit $84,000 on Pi Day, March 14th. Kevin argues that many are being fooled by randomness. Grain believes Josh is simply an elite trader — and maybe even tapped into something unconventional. Memories, multiverses, time loops?
