So many of us brush off the little things in relationships, at work, or even in our own self-care. But are they really “no big deal”? In this powerful conversation with Dr. Alina Kastner, we dive into why those small moments, subtle behaviors, and everyday choices actually carry a huge impact. We explore:Why minimizing the “small stuff” creates long-term damageThe psychology behind why little things feel bigger than we realizeHow to spot patterns early before they become toxicPractical steps to build healthier, stronger connectionsIf you've ever wondered why something felt “like a big deal” when others dismissed it, this episode will give you clarity, validation, and tools to trust your instincts.
In this episode of Mind-Body Solution, Dr Tevin Naidu speaks with Dr Ruth Kastner, physicist and philosopher, about her groundbreaking Possibilist Transactional Formulation (PTF) of quantum theory. Kastner argues that quantum mechanics reveals a deeper realm of ontic possibilities, beyond spacetime, where transactions between emitters and absorbers give rise to the physical world we observe. This conversation bridges physics, philosophy, and metaphysics, offering a radical yet rigorous vision of reality as fundamentally processual, relational, and deeply mysterious. In 2016 the United States was stunned by evidence of Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election. But it shouldn't have been. Subversion—domestic interference to undermine or manipulate a rival—is as old as statecraft itself. In A Measure Short of War: A Brief History of Great Power Subversion (Oxford UP, 2025) Jill Kastner and William C. Wohlforth provide a compelling ride through the history of subversion. They examine subversion's allure, its operational possibilities, and argue that, in our high stakes, changing technological landscape, a clear-eyed understanding of the history and parameters of subversion can help polities defend against it. Jill Kastner is a scholar in the Department of War Studies at Kings College London. She has a doctorate in History from Harvard University. Author Lisa Diane Kastner discusses the first two books in her new paranormal fantasy series, Cure and Family Pack. In these books, we meet Luna, a young woman who has just lost her beloved brother. She traces his movements to Sweden where she discovers that her family descends from an iconic female Viking warrior known as the Birke. Luna also discovers that her brother was a shapeshifter, a lycanthrope, and that she has begun to show the same signs of transformation. Both books follow dual timelines and narratives, which allow Lisa's love of history and research to shine through. Everything old is new again in international politics. According to Jill Kastner, co-author of A Measure Short of War: A Brief History of Great Power Subversion, today's international tensions over Ukraine, Taiwan and Greenland mark a return to historical normalcy after a brief period of global American unipolarity. Kastner explains that subversion—defined as hostile or unwanted action on a rival's territory—has been a constant tool of statecraft throughout history. She presents subversion as a rational choice between diplomacy and war, where states make cost-benefit calculations about their actions. Citing historical examples from Thucydides' Athens and Elizabeth I's England to modern-day geopolitics, she explains how nations use subversive tactics when diplomatic channels fail, but war seems too costly. Let's hope she's right when it comes to heading off a Chinese war over Taiwan or an American invasion of Greenland. Dr Jill Kastner is an independent scholar and historian based in London. Her work focuses on international relations from the Cold War to the present, with an emphasis on intelligence and subversive activities both covert and overt. Jill completed her PhD at Harvard in 1999 under the guidance of Ernest May and Philip Zelikow before joining the Presidential Recordings Project at the University of Virginia's Miller Center for Public Affairs. She has contributed book chapters on various Cold War crises, including Suez and Berlin, and written for The Nation and Foreign Affairs. She served as the executive editor and collaborator for Hope and History: A Memoir of Tumultuous Times, the political memoir of Ambassador William J. vanden Heuvel. She is currently collaborating with William C. Wohlforth on a book about the history of subversion, due out with Oxford University Press next year. Prior to her PhD, Jill worked as a television news producer on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. She is a member of Chatham House, the Pilgrims of the US/UK, and the Harvard Club of New York.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Let's face it, family can be a challenge. But when that family is a group of supernatural shapeshifters? Well, that's a horse—or a wolf—of a different color. In our newest Citywide Bytes interview, I talk with author Lisa Diane Kastner for her recently-released book, “Family Pack,” the sequel to her 2022 release, “Cure.” The book continues the story of Luna Auber, whom after her brother dies suddenly learns that she is both a shapeshifting lycanthrope and the descendent of a legendary female Viking warrior. In “Family Pack,” Luna's epic journey continues amidst a conflict between The Lycanthrope Society, which believe that humans and lycanthropes should exist in harmony, and The Righteous Group, which believe that lycanthropes are intended to rule over all other species. Lisa talks about the series got its start on a dare from fellow author and New York Times bestseller Jonathan Maberry, and full disclosure, I nerd out quite a bit here. When one of the greats of the writing world dares you to do something, you just gotta! We also go into how Luna's progressed on her journey in this new life and the conflict that she's about to be a part of. Lisa talks about Luna's powers and how she adapts to this new world as well as how the character and author parallel one another. And if anyone out there wants to make my dream of Citywide Blackout cookies happen, I'm here for it!

Česko, české firmy i většina lidí se ráda dívá do minulosti. „My Češi jsme často zdatní vzpomínači. A začíná s nastavením mysli. „Mindset je součástí základní trojice úspěšnosti. Pro jakékoliv řemeslo používáte vždy nějaké nástroje, to je toolset. Pro každou lidskou činnost potřebujete určité znalosti, dovednost a kompetence. Ty tvoří skillset. Ale tím nejdůležitějším, ať už ve sportu na hřišti nebo ve firmě v managementu, je mindset, to jak máte nastavenou hlavu a s jakým přístupem nástroje a dovednosti dovedete používat,“ vysvětluje. Dr. Ruth Kastner is a historian of Physics and philosopher of Science who is preoccupied with rational interpretations of quantum mechanics. She serves as the third pole of the transactional quantum mechanics big tent where she, alongside John Cramer and Carver Mead, argue that the apparent mysteries of quantum mechanics can be rationalized by modeling everything from light to gravity as an exchange between atoms. Our conversation explores how she became enamored with this alternative approach to physics, the question of how accurate our models really are when it comes to the subatomic world, why the word "electron" is hopelessly confused, and why moving backwards in space and time aren't as different as they might seem at first glance. Pam Kastner discusses the connection between spelling and reading. She emphasizes that teaching spelling is teaching reading, as spelling is a higher linguistic skill that requires complete and accurate recall and memory for words. Spelling helps students understand the internal structure of words and improves their reading abilities. She suggests using instructional routines that integrate phonology, orthography, morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics to teach spelling effectively. TakeawaysTeaching spelling is teaching reading, as spelling is a higher linguistic skill that requires complete and accurate recall and memory for words.Spelling helps students understand the internal structure of words and improves their reading abilities.Effective spelling instruction should be explicit, systematic, and teach spelling patterns from least complex to most complex.Instructional routines should integrate phonology, orthography, morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics to teach spelling effectively. Direct and systematic spelling instruction is essential for students' language development.Spelling inventories are valuable tools for assessing students' understanding of language and identifying areas for targeted instruction.Spelling can be used as a teaching tool, allowing students to learn from their errors and improve their spelling skills.Spelling instruction should be aligned with the research and evidence-based practices to ensure its effectiveness.ResourcesPam Kastner's Padlet with resources (password PT2)We wrote a book! Nicola Kastner is one of the rare people who intentionally entered the events industry. The founder of The Event Strategist, a boutique consultancy firm, she helps her clients optimize their event experiences to drive bottom-line results. Before creating The Event Strategist, Kastner was the global vice president of event marketing strategy for SAP, a market leader in enterprise application software. She recently discussed the importance of data in event strategy with Skift Meetings at the Future of the Events Industry 2024 virtual summit. Light Bulb Moment Kastner studied hospitality at university, and when she took a course about incentive travel, a light bulb went off for her. After graduating, she worked on the hotel side at a destination management company. Later, she joined Maritz, where she helped run incentive travel programs for 12 years. Attending a conference, Kastner took a course about event strategy that changed the course of her career. SAP Sapphire Shines When asked what event she has planned that she is most proud of, she says SAP Sapphire 2019 in Orlando. This SAP flagship event included 25,000 attendees, 35 workstreams, and 120 content team members alone. In total, 5,000 employees worked on it. In addition, the conference strategy was led by data. Data Geek According to Kastner, not much can't be figured out with a pivot table. Now, with the addition of AI, her pivot tables are even more in-depth. She is leaning in to understand all the nuances of AI, which she says will change the work. Being so data-driven has been a differentiator in her career, she says. Learning From TED Last year, Kastner applied and paid out of her own pocket to participate in the TED conference in Vancouver. It was worth it, and she was very impressed. Before she even got onsite, she had a feeling of belonging from a WhatsApp group created for first-timers. Big Difference Between the Business of Events and the Events Business She said that event professionals tend to focus on logistics, not the business of events. And those are two distinctly different things.

Ron Kastner experienced what he called a "mortality moment" in his late 50s. A new dad, with two young daughters, it was a "profound realization" that he was entering the third act of his life and that to make the most of it, he had to make significant changes. A businessman who drank too much and was challenged by the stresses of the corporate world, Ron embarked on a journey to discover the life he wanted to live. He embraced new practices for health and longevity and discovered that it was possible to be fitter, stronger, more energetic, more grounded and happier than ever before. Now in his mid 70s, he says: "The feeling of being alive is just so visceral and so joyous....the wonder, that is our bodies, is just like a ceaseless source of amazement for me."Ron shares his story in the book, A Life Yet to Live: Finding Health, Vitality and Joy. In this interview he reveals the backstory to his transformation - becoming a father at an older age, significant lifestyle changes, such as exercising regularly, adopting a healthier diet, abstaining from alcohol, and an holistic approach to longevity that encompasses both physical and emotional health.
