Don Pyle shares stories about working with legendary producer and engineer Steve Albini on a Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet album and explains why Albini stood apart from nearly everyone else in music. Known publicly for being blunt and sometimes difficult, Albini is remembered by Pyle as an intelligent, thoughtful, and genuinely good person — a rare blend of scientist and artist in the recording studio. This episode is a highlight from the full Booked On Rock interview with Don Pyle, author of Rough Description. Listen to the full episode and more at Booked On Rock.

As he receives a Lifetime Achievement Award at Toronto's Departure Festival this month, Allen tells Tom Power about his journey from Vancouver club booker to industry titan, as well as his reputation as an outspoken agitator that's generated his share of controversies.

Making a Scene Presents - Canada Just Put Money Behind the People Who Build the Stage FACTOR's new live music investment is more than a press release. It is a reminder that if you want a real music middle class, you do not just fund songs. You fund the ecosystem that gets those songs in front of people. There is a big difference between saying you support music and actually building a system that helps music survive. Canada just gave us a very clear example of that difference. On April 21, 2026, FACTOR announced a $2 million investment in the live music sector through two new initiatives, the Promoter Program and the Festival Program. According to FACTOR, the goal is to strengthen what it called cultural sovereignty by sharing risk with Canadian-owned promoters and festivals that have a real track record of presenting Canadian artists and keeping diverse Canadian voices at the center of the live experience. FACTOR says the guidelines for both programs will go live on April 30, 2026, and applications are due by 5:00 p.m. ET on June 11, 2026. http://www.makingascene.org

In this episode of the GetConnected Podcast, Mike Agerbo sits down with author Cam Gordon to explore the fascinating early history of music on the internet and how it transformed the Canadian music scene. Cam's new book “Track Changes: The Origin Story of Canadian Music on the Internet (1990–2010)” dives into the chaotic and exciting years when technology disrupted the music industry forever. From Napster and file-sharing networks to the rise of digital downloads and online communities, we explore how artists, fans, and the industry adapted during one of the biggest technological shifts in music history. If you grew up with MP3 players, LimeWire, Kazaa, CD burners, or early music blogs, this episode will take you right back to the digital frontier.
The new book, Track Changes, examines the rise of all that came with the internet and how it changed Canadian music from new media to message boards, fan sites, MP3 blogs, and more, diving into how legacy brands were forced to evolve, including major record labels, retailers, and of course the media and radio.Authored by Cam Gordon, Track Changes essentially chronicles the shared cultural history of music, technology and media in the 1990s and 2000s. We chatted with Brad Rempel about the early days of High Valley, as in when he was just four years old, and where the band is today. High Valley has become a household name across Canadian country music families. From hits like “Grew Up On That”, “Make You Mine”, and “She's With Me”, the band has collected accolades over the years spanning across not just Canada, but the United States as well. They've been nominated for ACM, CMT and JUNO Awards and have earned multiple CCMA Awards. Brad recently scored his first US number one as a songwriter on Josh Ross' “Single Again”. In this episode, I shine the spotlight on The Unfaithful Servants through a conversation with singer, guitarist, and songwriter Dylan Stone From Vancouver Island's roots scene to a week immersed at IBMA in Chattanooga, the Servants have built a sound that slips past easy labels: tight three- and four-part harmonies, fearless arrangements, and a blend of bluegrass, folk, alt-country, and Americana that still feels unmistakably like one band.Dylan walks me through the Servants' arc: his partnership with mandolinist Jesse Cobb (a founding member of The Infamous Stringdusters), the jolt of energy when fiddle phenom Quinn Etheridge-Peddon joined, and the final puzzle piece in bassist Mark Johnson. We discuss the chemistry that's palpable onstage and how trust enables them to push beyond genre boundaries while always prioritizing the song.Their new album, Fallen Angel (out October 17), captures that identity. The band converted Quinn's basement into a studio. It brought in producer Adrian Dolan to keep it honest and alive, arrangements evolving in real time, performances that breathe, and the raw cohesion of a working band. We also explore their next steps: incorporating listening-led improvisation into writing (akin to jazz school rather than “endless solo”) and planning U.S. runs in 2026 from the Pacific Northwest down the coast and inland. The title track “Fallen Angel” is out now on all platforms.Band lineupDylan Stone — vocals, guitar, songwritingJesse Cobb — mandolin, instrumental writing, vocalsQuinn Etheridge-Peddon — fiddle, vocalsMark Johnson — bass, vocalsTo learn more about The Unfaithful Servants, visit their website.Music from the Episode:Fallen Angel (The Unfaithful Servants)Real to Touch (The Unfaithful Servants)Thank you for listening! On the Saturday July 5, 2025 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we celebrate Canadian music and the people who make it. We meet Kevan Staples, co-founder of the legendary Rough Trade. In this interview from 2021 Staples, who passed away earlier this year, talks about his legendary band and their best-known song, “High School Confidential.” Household name Randy Bachman stops by. He’s best known as the lead guitarist, songwriter and a founding member of the 1960s and 1970s rock bands The Guess Who and Bachman–Turner Overdrive. Bachman was also a member of Brave Belt, Union and Ironhorse, and has recorded numerous solo albums. He is also a national radio personality and was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2016… In this interview we talk about where it all began for him. We’ll listen to an interview from my archive with legendary musician Robbie Robertson. The Band guitar player, who passed away in 2023, joined me several years ago to talk about his earliest musical inspirations, how he was booed by Bob Dylan’s audience and how he once almost turned to a life of crime when he couldn’t get gigs. And, we’ll get to know Mike Downie, director of “The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal,” the definitive four-part documentary series about the band who, as the programmers of TIFF noted earlier this year, “went on to make music that defined Canada to the world and, more importantly, Canada to Canadians.”

The Band guitar player, who passed away in 2023, joined me several years ago to talk about his earliest musical inspirations, how he was booed by Bob Dylan's audience and how he once almost turned to a life of crime when he couldn't get gigs. And, we'll get to know Mike Downie, director of “The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal,” the definitive four-part documentary series about the band who, as the programmers of TIFF noted earlier this year, “went on to make music that defined Canada to the world and, more importantly, Canada to Canadians.”
Cory and Noah discuss the rich, complex music culture of Noah's home country of Canada, with a look at both how it differs from American music culture and some of the ways the two interact.Hear new episodes a month early on Nebula: https://nebula.tv/ghost-notes12tonehttps://bsky.app/profile/12tone.nebula.tvhttps://nebula.app/12tonehttps://www.youtube.com/c/12tonevideoshttps://www.patreon.com/12tonevideosPolyphonichttps://bsky.app/profile/polyphonic.nebula.tvhttps://nebula.app/polyphonichttps://www.youtube.com/c/Polyphonichttps://www.patreon.com/polyphonicSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Canada Council director Michelle Chawla says Canadian decision-makers need to acknowledge that the arts have a vital role to play in these uncertain times. In response to the threats of annexation by the U.S. and the tariffs aimed at weakening the Canadian economy, there has been a major rise in nationalistic cultural expression. Musicologist Rosheeka Parahoo says that when it comes to radio play, funding and recognition, the promise of diverse Canadian music has seldom matched the reality. And that needs to change.

Since the U.S. president has been talking about annexing Canada, there's been a surge of pride in Canadian identity. Yet over many years, Canadians have struggled to define their culture as separate from the U.S. since the two are intertwined, especially as it relates to most genres of the arts. What set Canada apart? And do Canadian art and artists need a renaissance? We ask, David Leonard, executive director of the Writers Trust Fund of Canada; Andrew Cash, president and CEO of CIMA; Marsha LEderman, arts journalist; and Tonya Williams, founder of the Reelworld film festival.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode's guest is Robert Dayton, the author of Cold Glitter: The Untold Story of Canadian Glam. Dayton taps his Canadian roots to reveal mind-blowing stories of musicians fighting to be heard. For this final episode of 2024, I'm happy to welcome Goldie Boutilier to Roadcase!! Goldie has lived quite a life thus far, and her journey is one of ups and downs — but ultimately of survival and empowerment. Her latest EP, The Actress, her third effort in as many years, continues her through-line of living through trauma and eventually coming out the other side — successful, happy and thriving. Canadian born — raised in the hinterlands of Nova Scotia — Goldie was signed by Interscope Records when she was just 21, but that went belly up, leaving Goldie alone in LA with few options. Ultimately, she landed in Paris where she worked in the modeling industry while continuing to dream of a career in music. Years later, she successfully started over again as an Indie Artist with a new life and a new vision. This is a real-life tale of survival, empowerment and self-actualization, and it's a MUST LISTEN. True to her name, Goldie is a true GEM, and I'm proud to share her amazing story with my Roadcase listeners!! Dear friend and broadcasting icon Marilyn Denis joins the show this week! She shares her journey through broadcasting, family life, and the evolution of media. She reflects on the joys of Christmas with her family, the challenges of building a home, and the sacrifices she has made throughout her career. The discussion also touches on the impact of social media on broadcasting, the challenges posed by AI and technology, and the impact of scams on public figures. The conversation also touches on celebrity encounters and the balance between privacy and public life. More about Marilyn Denis: In 2023, Marilyn announced she would bid adieu as host of the popular Canadian Screen Award-winning series THE MARILYN DENIS SHOW, following 13 incredible seasons and a 34-year career of daily daytime television. Formerly co-host of Roger & Marilyn, the veteran radio broadcaster now hosts Marilyn Denis and Jamar, weekday mornings on Toronto's #1-ranked radio station CHUM 104.5. A definite trailblazer, Edmonton-born Marilyn became the first female DJ at KRPL in Moscow, Idaho. She then moved to Calgary where she held various radio and television positions including programmer, music director, and traffic reporter. But it wasn't until she auditioned to become Roger Ashby's co-host, that Marilyn found her niche. After interviewing dozens of broadcasters and actresses, Marilyn breezed into CHUM FM in July 1986. After chatting with her for a few brief minutes, Roger immediately remarked, “I think we've found the right one.” Marilyn has always balanced her dynamic radio career with her candid television presence. She first began her career in television by reporting on sports, weather, and entertainment at CFCN-TV (CTV Calgary) and working as a freelance reporter for TSN. Marilyn also shared hosting duties on Bravo!'s Gemini Award-winning concert series LIVE AT THE REHEARSAL HALL and was host of the popular daily show CITYLINE for nearly 20 years. A triple Gemini Award-winner (including back-to-back Viewers Choice Awards), Marilyn received The Rosalie Award, honouring Canadian women who have paved the way for others in radio broadcasting in 2006. Marilyn is the recipient of the Allan Waters Broadcast Lifetime Achievement Award, which was awarded at the 2017 Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards;_ _listed as one of Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 by WXN_;_ _selected as the University of Idaho's (where Marilyn studied broadcasting) 2017 Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree recipient. Maybe these hosers have had too much maple syrup or Labatt's Blue! Whatever is is, they won't shut-up about all these great bands and artists that resonate locally but fail to break through the impenetrable force field that is the 49th parallel. Rest assured it's not all Habs & Leafs, polar bears, Letterkenny and Tim Horton's up there. There's some awesome music too!
