This week, Chris DeMakes and Chris Fafalios take a deep dive into Coolio's massive 1995 hit “Gangsta's Paradise,” unpacking the song's gripping themes, powerful lyrics, and lasting cultural impact. From the Stevie Wonder sample that gave it its foundation to the haunting choir that set its tone, they break down the song's composition and the intense storytelling that made it resonate across generations. They also discuss Coolio's journey from Monessen, Pennsylvania, to Compton, his struggles and triumphs, and how this song—written in what he described as a near-spiritual moment—became an anthem of reflection on violence and mortality. Along the way, they touch on personal memories, the song's place in pop culture, and why it still hits just as hard today. Interview by Kris PetersLess Than Jake have played a massive role in the continued success of ska-infused punk since first bursting onto the scene in 1992.While their first two albums Pezcore and Losing Streak laid the platform for Less Than Jake, it was their 1998 album Hello Rockview that solidified their growing stature and propelled them from a band with great potential to a great band and fuck the potential. Featuring the huge tracks All My Best Friends Are Metalheads - which is closing in on 60 million spins - and History Of A Boring Town, Hello Rockview is the soundtrack to many a late Gen X or young Millennial youth.Known and loved the world over for their scintillating live performances, Australian audiences are about to receive their first visit from Less Than Jake in seven years when the band celebrates that milestone album this October and November with the Hello Rockview Tour Down Under. Not only will the ska legends be playing Hello Rockview in full, they will also be dragging The Bennies and Young Offenders around the countryside in a triple bill of excitement that should make up for lost time.HEAVY sat down with Less Than Jake vocalist/guitarist Chris Demakes to find out more, starting with why the band have neglected us out here for so long."Oh, geez," he smiled. "So, seven years by my account… was it 2016? Was that the last time we were there? I think it might have been 2017… shortly thereafter - because for a while there we were trying to get down to Australia every two to three years - four years tops - we'd try and get back down there for at least a festival or our own tour or something. Then of course we lost about two years with the pandemic, and now here we are. It took bands a minute - not to make excuses - but it took them out of the pandemic a second to start travelling overseas. We're glad to be back, and we hope it's not anywhere near as long next time."In the full interview, Chris talks about the tour and what to expect, playing Hello Rockview in full, difficulties they encountered translating the full album to stage, revisiting some of the older songs and the memories it brought back, why people connected with that album, the Hotter Than Hell shows as part of the tour, how much practice goes into Less Than Jake's live shows, compensating for an ageing body on tour, their latest single Broken Words, if it is part of a new album cycle and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

You've likely heard the news by now; Canadian Pop-Punk Icons SUM 41 are embarking on their final world tour, releasing their final album, and hanging up the Vans and Studded belts forever.  That's right, Ajax, Ontario's finest are calling it quits. It might surprise you to hear that Sum 41 have been a staple of Rock radio in this country for the better part of 25 years, and that even through lineup changes, health scares, label moves, and  musical experimentation, Deryck Whibley and the boys have helped keep the spirit of pop-punk, heavy metal, and good old fashioned Canadian Rock 'n' Roll alive and kicking. Originally conceived as young teenagers in 1994, but officially shaped up as SUM 41 in 1996, by 1997 SUM 41 making waves in the underground scene, working with the likes of manager Greig Nori's band Treble Charger, Len, and pre-Broken Social Scene Brendan Canning. In 1998, the guys recorded a demo tape, and homemade video footage to try and catch record labels attention, and by 1999, SUM 41 ultimately signed on the dotted line with the world famous Island Records. After a stop-start major label foray with their EP Half Hour of Power, it was make or break time for SUM 41 as they geared up for their full length debut 'All Killer, No Filler' luckily, the band was sitting on a secret weapon of a song that Deryck Whibley had been working on for years... albeit one they didn't even know how to play! In this episode, host Chris DeMakes and producer Chris Fafalios engage in a thought-provoking discussion about the legendary musician and songwriter Christine McVie and her iconic Fleetwood Mac hit, "Don't Stop." They explore the fascinating complexity of the song, which, despite its seeming simplicity, manages to convey an uplifting message about breakups, defying conventional norms for such themes. Reflecting on Christine McVie's profound impact on music and culture, the conversation becomes even more poignant following her passing in November 2022, solidifying her legacy as a trailblazing artist whose music continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. Chris DeMakesTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Chris DeMakes. Chris is the lead singer and guitar player for the ska-punk band Less Than Jake. In this episode we chat about how the band started, why they chose that style of music, and some of the cool things they were able to do as a result of the band's success. Less Than Jake has played more Van's Warped Tour shows than any other artist, and I ask Chris tons of questions about it. We discuss what exactly it means to be a "sell out", & how they managed to keep vinyl rights for every album no matter the record label. Chris put together a book during covid called Blast From The Past, so l ask him about that. Then we dive right into Chris' songwriting and how he has turned that into a full blown business. Finally, I grill him about his podcast "Chris DeMakes A Podcast" where he & a songwriting guest break down one of that guest's biggest hit songs. From the lyrics, to the melody, to the strange instruments used on the track; they really get into these songs. Check out Chris' podcast everywhere you find podcasts, and if YOU need a song written by Chris, he gives that contact email toward the end of the episode.

Hey friends! Today I'm excited to be speaking with someone that I've wanted to talk to for a while. Mr. Jed Dion, the host of Talking Records Podcast. I can't say that without hearing the Chris Demakes intro podcast theme. Jed is a fantastic human. I really appreciate him taking the time to chat with me. Sometimes, I think people who host podcasts get a little podcasted out, so I really appreciate his time. Jed is a big reason why I started Having A Blast. I was turned on to his podcast by my friend Jonathan Langston when he interviewed Jake from the band Strung Out. And I've been listening ever since. We talk about getting into punk rock, playing in punk rock bands, falling in love with music and identifying with punk music. Jed is also a 5th grade teacher, so we discuss what that's like as well. I had so much fun talking to Jed, I feel like we could discuss music for hours. He has always seemed like an insanely likable and humble dude on his podcast and I can confirm that he is indeed exactly that and more. Check out his podcast wherever you listen and check out his Instagram @talkingrecords as well for updates. Without further ado, please enjoy this fun convo with Mr. Jed Dion, host of Talking Records.
