Bill and Loren Armstrong, the husband and wife team behind NEVERSECOND - the cutting edge nutrition brand that in only a couple years has become very popular among trail runners, establishing itself as a leader in the category. Of course, Freetrail has officially been in partnership with NEVERSECOND since the beginning of the year, and in that time we've loved getting to know Bill and Loren and have developed a huge admiration for how they conduct themselves and their business – a quality and professionalism that 100% shows up in their products, which are exquisite. What is the story that forced us to dust off the mics, fire up the sound board, and emerge from a 16-month podcasting hiatus? Is it Katie Schide's epic summer? Dave Roche's insane Leadville CR? Damian Hall's effort to combat greenwashing at the top levels of the sport? Multiple world records at 50 miles or six days? No, of course not. Given that Katie will be on the media circuit fielding many interviews over the next few days and weeks, we focused on some unique angles in this conversation - getting the inside scoop on what the immediate aftermath looks like for pro runners finishing at the front of this race, the psychology of handling near constant media attention from start to finish on this course, whether it makes sense to separate start times for the men's and women's races at UTMB, what to do once you've succeeded at the pinnacle of the sport, and more. It's always great to have Katie on the show and stay tuned because our "Eurotrack" series will be returning in early October when we get together to preview the high-profile races at Les Templiers and Grand Raid.

We put lubrication in all the right places before this amazing episode! The main topic was a rundown of our big takeaways from the UTMB races, the most important week of the trail running year. Times get faster and faster... but carnage comes with it. We talk about how the fueling revolution may be impacting races, both in terms of speed and GI issues. Plus we break down the biggest storylines from the races, with some behind-the-scenes info you'll only get here! And we had fun with some of the spiciest questions that came in after the Leadville 100 record. Do we think this is a turning point in the sport? (No.) Do we recommend running on hate? (No, with exceptions.) Do we know our weight and bodyfat%? (Absolutely the heck not.) We also share the best headline of all time, from the website Defector. Prepare to run your D, V, A, and/or F off! This one was a total buffet of the best topics! Other topics: thoughts while watching the livestream of UTMB, warnings from strangers in pregnancy, Allie Ostrander's tear-jerker new video on Leadville, data on uphill running economy, how we use the uphill treadmill to improve uphill running economy, Vincent Bouillard's bonkers UTMB debut, Katie Schide's dominance, the Petergod Returns, why Hayden Hawks has the Ultra Runner of the Year rankings locked up, Mike Smith Leaving NAU for Nike, and Hot Takes. An interview with Katie Schide after her win of the 2024 UTMB.
What a race! The top athletes of the 2024 UTMB have completed the historic lap around Mont Blanc and this year's race did not disappoint. Our team recounts the top stories, breakout performances, upsets, and more from the 2024 UTMB. In a breakout performance, Vincent Bouillard took the men's win in blazing fast time of 19:54:23, the third fastest time in the race's storied history, behind Jim Walmsley and Kilian Jornet. Vincent is a HOKA employee and unsponsored racer, making this an extra special performance. Katie Schide won the women's race in a time of 20:09:31 course record time of, breaking Courtney Dauwalter's record from 2022 by over 20 minutes. After her win at Western States this June, Katie has solidified herself as one of the best ultramarathon runners our sport has ever seen. Come back Sunday for our full week recap of the race and champion interviews with the winners of CCC & UTMB. Our 2024 UTMB coverage is brought to you by our good friends at HOKA. We're grateful for their generous support and belief in Freetrail. HOKA is a proud presenting partner of the UTMB series. And sponsor of this week's Freetrail coverage.Check out the Freetrail coverage all week to learn more about their new release of the Tecton X3. AND if you are here in Chamonix, go experience the HOKA basecamp and join in all the Tecton demo opportunities across the week. Named after the earth's tectonic plates, which inspired its parallel dual carbon fiber plate design, the Tecton X franchise has revolutionized the trail racing world – propelling athletes to new heights. The Tecton X3 features an upgraded midsole featuring two layers of PEBA foam, with one softer layer on top for cushioning and impact, and a slightly firmer layer underneath for agility proprioception on technical terrain. The propulsive parallel carbon fiber plates have evolved – now featuring winglets, the wider plates wrap strategically up the sidewall for additional control in key zones. In the upper, a new knit collar acts as a gaiter to help mitigate trail debris from entering the shoe. Launching just in time for the UTMB Mont Blanc World Series, The Tecton X3 will be seen on HOKA elite athletes competing at the highest level in Chamonix, France. Inviting consumers and fans of the sport to learn about the innovation behind the brand's most pinnacle trail release yet, HOKA will be opening their FlyLab™experience dedicated to the Tecton X 3 in celebration of UTMB, located at the HOKA Base Camp in Chamonix Village, and open from Tuesday - Friday of race week. In this episode, Keely, Corrine, and Hillary discuss their experiences at both the Western States 100 and Lavaredo trail races from last weekend. They kick off the episode by talking about the “Here for the Women's Race” movement at the Western States 100 and then dive into a viewer question about hiking versus running on steep terrain and how to determine when one is more efficient than the other. The Western States 100 produced the fastest times in history, with Katie Schide and Jim Walmsley winning the women's and men's race, respectively, in the second fastest times in course history. They talk about the rest of the field, fun storylines, and Keely talks through her experience pacing Rachel Drake to a top 10 finish. Disclaimer: they got skunked! We were flying high after the best sports week of all time for this amazing episode! The main topic was the 2024 Western States 100, the most insane race we have ever seen. It was not a cool year, but the times were wildly faster across the board, building on massive speed breakthroughs from 2023. What are we seeing? The same trends are present on the track and even in other endurance sports. We have theories! The biggest, most exciting question of all: where might this trend be going next? We aren't sure, but after seeing this year's Western States unfold... we think it's indicative of a fundamental shift across endurance sports, and we can't wait to see where things go from here. Storylines included Jim Walmsley and Katie Schide further establishing legacies as two of the best ever, Rod Farvard's breakthrough that might be the story of the race, the importance of pushing the pace earlier than previously thought, the cruelty of sports existing right alongside the uplifting stories, aging athletes resetting what's possible, and so much more! Plus, we brought tons of fun stories from the Olympic Track Trials, which we got to experience firsthand with the athletes. There are so many lessons to share. Most importantly, there were unlimited free snacks. We'll be eating like we stole a vending machine for weeks. This episode is full of so much love, joy, and inspiration! We hope that you feel it, absorb it, and go on to chase your own limits. How fast can you go? How many snacks can you grab? There's only one way to find out. We love you all! HUZZAH! An interview with Katie Schide after her win of the 2024 Western States 100.
An interview with Katie Schide after her win of the 2024 Western States 100.
An interview with Katie Schide before the 2024 Western States 100.
Voici le 7e épisode de la 3e saison de La Bande à D+ animé par Nicolas Fréret avec:
Corrine and Keely recently had a conversation with Katie Schide, a professional runner for The North Face. They discussed Katie's journey into running, which started in New Hampshire's Black Mountains. They also talked about her transition to life as a full-time athlete and how she balances the newfound pressure to perform in a sport she loves. Katie shared her experiences of winning the Canyons 100k race in an impressive manner and also winning UTMB, a 100-mile race, while finishing second at the Western States 100-mile race last year. She also discussed her relationship with a fellow professional athlete and how they balance and support each other's goals. Additionally, they got an explanation about her "Cool Dad" nickname and asked her some rapid-fire questions to get to know her better, including her carbohydrate intake, favorite shoes, geomorphic features, and snacks. We got the surprise of our lives before recording this dazed-and-excited episode! The main topic was the Canyons 100k. It was Megan's dream race, and you may have seen... she did not start. We had some incredibly surprising news right before we boarded our flight to California for the race, and we process it in real-time on the episode. Hopefully the discussion and Megan's openness helps you deal with whatever big surprises you face in life! Even though Megan didn't race, we cheered and crewed as ultra history was made at the race! This year's Canyons 100k had a performance for the ages from Katie Schide, plus a breakthrough from Rod Farvard, a selfless act from Drew Holmen, and so much more. We break down the dynamics, full of joy from seeing it all live! The big discussions revolve around training theory, fueling approaches, how cooling mattered even in temperate conditions, our complex thoughts on carb loading, hydration needs, and inspiration from the back of the pack. And we brought a giddy, delirious energy to some awesome topics! Other topics: why we were so surprised by the big news, how Megan feels about it all, societal expectations in early pregnancy, Allie Ostrander's wonderful reflections on crying after races, continuous lactate monitors, the 776 Invitational's huge investment in women's track and what it might mean for the future of the sport, why it's bloodwork season and what people should test, the new ruling making non-competes unenforceable and how it's relevant for endurance sports, the TikTok ban, and hot takes. Life comes at you fast. Maybe that's why we podcast fast! Knowing you all are along for the journey means so much to us. Into the great unknown we go! HUZZAH! Katie Schide is a professional trail runner for The North Face from the US, living in France. Katie is one of the most well known and established trail runners in the world: she's just been awarded the second place of the Trail Runner of the Year Award presented by Freetrail, and as well as the second place of the historic Ultra Runner of the Year Award by Ultrarunning Magazine. She's a 2021 UTMB winner, a 2023 Western States runner up, with a time that would have won every edition but last year, she also placed second at OCC and she won Diagonal de Fous in 2023, besides a long list of world class performances in the past years in her resume. Katie currently lives in the Mercantour region of the French Alps with her partner, elite trail runner himself, Germain Grangier. She's a geologist, and she loves spending long days moving through the mountains – whether that be running, skiing, biking, or a combination of all three. In this episode we talk about Katie's training and approach to racing, dealing with sponsors, media and brands, living in France and about the current state of the sport of trail running. Stefanie Flippin and Matt Chittim welcome one of good friends, Dr. Megan Roche, to the show. Megan is one of best runners and coaches in trail running and an experienced researcher at Stanford University. The three of us have a conversation around the current state of trail and ultrarunning, the decision making process for post college athletes about potentially joining the sport, and how some of the best runners in the sport (Dylan Bowman, Katie Schide, Drew Holman, Tori McCann, Adam Merry, and many others) focused on other sports in college and why that may have helped them in their running journeys.
These days, Katie Schide is living in France pursuing her passion as a professional trail runner. And, it's paying off — last year she took home the win at Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), a roughly 171-kilometer (about 106 miles) trail race with 10,000 meters of elevation gain. And just last week? She came in second at the UTMB OCC 50K, showing that she's got some range in the mountains. For episode 265, she's talking about how she got so good at this sport, growing up loving the outdoors in Maine and ultimately moving to Europe to immerse herself fully in the culture with partner and fellow trail athlete Germain Granger. Schide talks about what it's like to live and work with Granger abroad in a small town without many other English-speaking residents, and how the duo decides who does what race and when. Plus, she talks about getting her PHD in geology and how training and nutritional needs vary from race to race. Plus: Her best advice for anyone who wants to get on the trails themselves.
