Elise Stefanik, once considered a front-runner for Donald Trump's vice presidential slot and more recently tapped as the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, has been asked to withdraw from the nomination. The directive came directly from Donald Trump, urging her to return to the House of Representatives — a move that has left many observers puzzled, especially since Stefanik had already begun a farewell tour of her district. This surprise reversal raises questions about the strategic reasoning behind Trump's decision. The timing, the political stakes, and the looming legislative calendar all appear to be key components in a much larger game of congressional chess.A central concern appears to be a special election in Florida. Polling data from Fabrizio Ward — helmed by Trump's trusted pollster Tony Fabrizio — shows the Republican candidate with only a three-point lead in a district that Trump carried by 30 points in the last election. The narrowing margin is attributed not just to candidate quality, but also a significant financial disparity: Democrats have outspent Republicans by over $8 million. This disparity has translated into heavier air traffic and visibility for the Democratic challenger.Speculation suggests Trump may be trying to protect the Republican majority in the House, fearing it could be further weakened by Stefanik's departure. But some political watchers — myself included — argue that this explanation is too simplistic and out of step with Trump's usual political instincts.A more intricate and possibly more compelling reason involves legislative mechanics in New York. Stefanik has not officially resigned from the House. If she had, Governor Kathy Hochul — who, as a Democrat, has little incentive to rush — would have 90 days to call a special election. Starting that clock now would push any vote into late June, possibly beyond the key reconciliation package deadline. That seat, currently held by Stefanik, could be unavailable during crucial legislative moments.Further complicating the issue, a proposed bill in the New York State legislature would allow the governor to delay special elections until the next general election. If passed, this would effectively remove Stefanik's seat from the House until 2026, robbing Republicans of a vote not only for the rest of this year but most of next year as well. This development underscores how thin the Republican majority truly is. Stefanik stepping away — even temporarily — represents a potentially significant loss in the vote count. With both the House and Senate reportedly aligning this week on legislative priorities, every vote counts more than ever.Stefanik, having exited Republican leadership and publicly prepared for her transition to the UN role, now finds herself in a politically awkward position. She will likely need a face-saving path back into House leadership — an effort that could trigger even more internal headaches for the GOP.Whether this pivot was prompted by a cold read of Florida polling numbers or a strategic maneuver to preserve legislative power, the consequences are clear: political timing and control of congressional votes are dictating decisions at the highest levels of Republican leadership.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:00:20 - Elise Stefanik Asked to Withdraw00:08:03 - Interview with Michael Cohen00:25:41 - Update00:27:28 - Student Visa Deportations00:30:11 - HHS Job Cuts00:31:48 - MS-13 Leader Arrested00:35:47 - Interview with Michael Cohen, cont.01:19:12 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Jay-Z and Diddy Lawsuit Dropped as Sexual Assault Accuser Withdraws Case A woman who accused Jay-Z and Sean "Diddy" Combs of raping her when she was 13 years old has dropped her lawsuit against both men, according to court records. The notice of voluntary dismissal was filed on Friday and was dismissed "with prejudice," meaning she cannot refile the case. The lawsuit, initially filed in late 2023, included disturbing allegations that the woman, identified as "Jane Doe," was lured by a limousine driver outside the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards and taken to an after-party, where she claimed she was drugged and raped by the two music moguls. The suit was dismissed less than four months after it was filed, but her attorneys did not provide a reason for withdrawing it. Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, strongly denied the allegations and had been pushing for the case to be dismissed. Following the lawsuit's withdrawal, Carter released a statement calling the claims "frivolous, fictitious, and appalling." "I would not wish this experience on anyone. The trauma that my wife, my children, my loved ones and I have endured can never be dismissed," he said, also referring to the case as a "money-grab." Combs, who is already facing several lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct, has been in custody in New York City since late last year on sex trafficking and racketeering charges. His legal team responded to the lawsuit's dismissal by asserting that it was just one of many cases that "will not hold up in a court of law." "Sean Combs has never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone—man or woman, adult or minor. No number of lawsuits, sensationalized allegations, or media theatrics will change that reality," his attorneys stated. The woman first came forward publicly in December in an NBC News interview, revealing that she is now a 38-year-old mother in Alabama. She said she remained silent for more than two decades out of fear that no one would believe her. According to her lawsuit, she was outside Radio City Music Hall the night of the 2000 VMAs when she met a limousine driver who claimed to work for Combs. The driver allegedly took her to an after-party, where she accepted a drink from a waitress and immediately felt lightheaded. The lawsuit stated that as she looked for a place to lie down, Combs, Carter, and another unnamed woman followed her into a room, where Carter allegedly raped her first, followed by Combs. Carter's attorneys had pointed out multiple inconsistencies in the woman's claims, including being unable to verify the location of the alleged after-party. The woman described it as a large white house with a gated U-shaped driveway about 20 minutes from Radio City Music Hall, but no such property had been found to match that description. Additionally, Carter's legal team referenced NBC's reporting that musician Benji Madden—who the woman claimed was present at the party—was actually on tour in the Midwest at the time. Meanwhile, Combs remains in legal turmoil, facing multiple allegations of sexual assault, physical violence, and sex trafficking. His upcoming trial for sex trafficking and racketeering charges is set to begin in May. #JayZ #Diddy #SexualAssaultCase #LawsuitDismissed #MeToo #HipHopNews #BreakingNews Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Today as the extended deadline for IDF withdrawal from Lebanon under the US-brokered ceasefire expires, Defense Minister Israel Katz said, “Starting today, the IDF will remain in a buffer zone in Lebanon in five strategic outposts and will continue to enforce forcefully and without compromise against any violation by Hezbollah.” Fabian explains why these five points and whether there is now a "buffer zone" on the border. Israel is expecting to receive the bodies of four hostages from Hamas on Thursday under the provisions of the first stage of an ongoing ceasefire deal with the Palestinian terror group. We hear how the IDF is preparing to receive the bodies and how the families will eventually be informed of their identities. Even as Egypt is working towards a proposal for rebuilding Gaza, Defense Minister Katz has called for a new directorate in the Defense Ministry tasked with enabling Palestinians to “voluntarily” leave the Gaza Strip, as per US President Donald Trump’s stated plans. Fabian weighs in. The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out a pair of drone strikes in the Gaza Strip on Sunday — one targeting a group of gunmen who were approaching Israeli forces in one area and the other as a warning when a car drove near soldiers in another. We hear how all is not calm on the ground in Gaza. The Israeli military announced on Sunday that it had completed its investigations into its failures during the lead-up to the Hamas terror group’s October 7, 2023, onslaught, and would begin to present its findings next Tuesday. We learn what the investigations should -- or should not -- unveil. Please see today's ongoing live blog for more updates. A woman who accused Jay-Z and Sean "Diddy" Combs of raping her when she was 13 years old has dropped her lawsuit against both men, according to court records. Following the lawsuit's withdrawal, Carter released a statement calling the claims "frivolous, fictitious, and appalling." "I would not wish this experience on anyone.
