This week we're sharing the mics with friend of the show Katie Kaars-Sijpesteijn. A Salomon and GB athlete, Katie has lined up, and podiumed, at some of the most competitive races out there. But the last 12 months have taken her down a very different path as she chased a sub‑3 road marathon. Not exactly the classic tune‑up for UTS by UTMB 100K, yet it clearly worked… because she stormed her way to 2nd place in a seriously stacked field. We chat about her recent races, the unconventional build‑up, and her journey back to racing as a mother of two young children.HARRIER - Use code TATP10 for 10% off - https://harrierrunfree.avln.me/c/qXhnTgIdEMeaXMILES UK - Listeners receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link - https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRFENIX LIGHT LTD - Use code T&T5 for 5% - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION - Use code TEA2026 for 15% off your first orderPRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PLANNER - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zSTRAVA - Use code TEA for 20% off an annual membership - #StravaPartner #Adhttps://www.strava.com/subscribe/checkout?code=TEASUNGOD - Use code TEA15 for 15% off your order - https://www.sungod.co/en-gbBEARHUG - Click the link to receive 15% off your order.https://getabearhug.avln.me/c/mtOmrcHyImJoContent contains affiliate links which help support this channel at no cost to you.Brew with the Coaches - CLICK HEREHardmoors - https://www.hardmoors110.org.uk/Trail Outlaws - https://www.trailoutlaws.com/13 Valleys Ultra - https://www.13valleysultra.com/Beyond Trails - https://www.beyondtrails.co.uk/Hellfire Events - https://www.hellfireevents.com/Dales Runner - https://dalesrunner.co.uk/Run The Wild - https://runthewild.co.uk/Hannah Walsh - https://www.hannahwalsh.co.uk/Punk Panther - https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Pen Llyn Ultra - https://penllyn.niftyentries.com/Raw Adventures - https://www.raw-adventures.co.uk/XNRG - https://www.xnrg.co.uk/

Send us Fan MailCody Poskin is an emerging star of ultramarathoning, and his meteoric rise continued earlier this month at the Cocodona 250 in Arizona, where he placed second among men in 58:13:44, impressively knocking 13 hours off of his time from a year earlier. He attributes his progress due to lessons he learned from last time about sleeping, how not to chafe, increasing his training load, and to mental ruggedness. Some of the latter was honed when he won the Ultra Gobi Desert 400K, which he discussed on WASP episode #364 last October. Cody chats with me about many of the challenges he encountered while running 253 miles through the Arizona mountains, deserts, canyons, and several steep mountain climbs and descents, and what it was like to not be cruising to the finish, but actually be dueling other competitors in the latter stages of the race. Not to mention the challenges of training for such terrain on the meek hills where he lives in Missouri, and while working an office job. His recent results have led to sponsorships with Mount to Coast shoes among others that are leading toward him considering himself a full-time professional runner, and allowing him some degree of freedom like many 24-year-olds crave to travel to races and  pursue other adventures like triathlon and long-distance kayaking. Cody is setting his sights toward qualifying for high-profile races like Hardrock and UTMB, and relocating to an area like Colorado where he can train on our trails. A former University of Arizona track and cross country runner turned competitive ultrarunner, Zach brings a unique perspective to the 250-mile distance, drawing on experience from UTMB's CCC and golden ticket races that set him apart from much of the field. In this episode, Zach breaks down the full arc of his race: the unexpected mental fog of running in a lead pack, a costly navigation blunder through the Fain Ranch section, a "hero dose" creatine experiment that left him feeling like he was having an out-of-body experience, and a deeply emotional low on the climb to Schnebly Hill that had him questioning everything — followed by one of his strongest sections of the race. He also reflects on sleep strategy (or lack thereof), the difference between giving up and quitting, and what it means to voluntarily choose suffering in a sport where so many face it without a choice. We also get his inside look at how Cody Poskin, Joe McConaughy, and Courtney Dauwalter race these things, a quick breakdown of his training approach and what he'd do differently, and why he'd come back and do it all over again.Plus: basketball at mile 107, OpenFuel's mission to reduce plastic waste in the sport, and the manifesting of future MBA podiums.

Writer and ultrarunner Gaël Dutigny joins us to talk about his Ultra Running Magazine article, "Fear Isn't a Weakness," and why fear may be one of the most misunderstood tools in endurance sports. Gaël shares how, even after finishing UTMB four times and racing in deserts, jungles, mountains, and even Iraq during wartime, fear still shows up before and during big efforts. The conversation reframes fear not as something to suppress, but as information that can sharpen decision-making, expose your true "why," and help you respect the environment you're moving through. We also talk about the thin line between fear that freezes you and fear that helps you function, especially in long mountain races where fatigue, darkness, cutoffs, hallucinations, and self-doubt all start stirring the pot. One of the most useful takeaways for trail runners is that mental preparation deserves the same attention as physical training, because knowing yourself may be just as important as knowing your pace, gear, or nutrition plan.   Links: Gaël Dutigny's Substack UltraRunning Magazine "Race to the Summit" Dean Potter's documentary on Netflix Episode Sponsors: Tifosi Optics - CLARITY ON THE TRAIL: Post your Golden Nugget of wisdom that helps you recover after a huge effort on Instagram, tag @TifosiOptics, @TrailRunnerNation, and use the hashtag #ClarityOnTheTrail.  OR try texting us (within the USA) with your tip: 916-235-3928. Trail running usually becomes real for people at a local ultra, not while watching UTMB or Western States online. The parking lot at 5am with 53 runners, one exhausted race director, and volunteers giving up their Saturday to help strangers keep moving is still the clearest entry point into the sport. This episode is for the runners who believe the soul of trail running still lives there.Josh explores why the local 50K may be the most important layer in trail running, how participation precedes fandom in ultra culture, why authenticity in trail running still feels earned instead of performed, and why the small grassroots races that built the sport are becoming increasingly fragile in the modern era of spectacle, prestige, and professionalization. Please give us a follow, rate the podcast, and give a review. If you're new to Borderlands, start here.Topics / Timestamps02:52 The Turning Point of the Race03:57 The Ecosystem of Trail Running07:45 The Local Ultra: An Introduction to Trail Running Culture11:22 The Challenges of Local Trail Races18:00 The Importance of Local Races in Trail RunningResources / LinksSalt Lake Foothills Trail Races Josh Rosenthal on IGBorderlands.ccLa French TrailHigh TonesSubwhateverRelated EpisodesUltra Running isn't Just RunningPresented by Kiprun.----Borderlands explores trail running through culture, media, and the forces shaping it.Watch on YouTubeRead on Substack

Send us Fan MailBarkley Marathons is famous for suffering, but Max King explains the part most people miss: it's a puzzle that rewards cooperation as much as fitness. We talk about why he's drawn to deep-woods, off-trail navigation, how the old-school “tear a page from a hidden book” checkpoints actually make sense, and what it takes to build the kind of year-to-year knowledge that can move you from survival to real progress. If you've ever wondered why even elite runners struggle there, Max makes it painfully clear. We also get into a major career shift: after a long run with Salomon, Max joins Kylas Fuga and breaks down what he wanted from a sponsor at this stage of his career. We talk trail running shoes in the details that matter, including durability, outsole grip, and why he's leaning into more cushioning as he gets older. He shares what he's using now, what he still wants for more aggressive terrain, and how he hopes the brand will reach the American trail running market through better distribution and hands-on demos. From there, we zoom out to longevity, recovery, and the realities of coming back from injury. Max walks through his meniscus tear, what helped him return, and why rebuilding true world-championship fitness can take longer than simply running again. We also tackle the growth of trail running, the pull between UTMB-style races and World Championships, and Max's blunt take on anti-doping: when someone cheats, it doesn't feel theoretical, it feels like stealing from friends. If you like smart, honest conversations about ultrarunning, adventure racing, and the future of the sport, subscribe, share this with a training partner, and leave a rating and review so more people can find the show.Follow Max on IG - @maxkingorUse code SteepStuff for 20% your cart on Sidas.usFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podFollow Sidas USA on IG - @sidas_usa

The UTMB Index and race scores have become increasingly significant in the global trail running ecosystem. The Index upstream of sponsorship and race entry opportunities for pros, it allows fans to gauge who is performing best on the world's stage, and it helps media members contextualize performances across years, distances, and different course terrains. Today the UTMB Index is evolving in some subtle yet important ways. Joining me to talk all about it are Adrian Vincentand Karen Merlin — two members of the team who worked on this new system and are well qualified to explain how things are changing and what it means for the sport. Send us Fan MailA top European trail runner lands in the US, strings together races and workouts across the West, and leaves with a clearer view of what makes American trail running culture feel so alive. We sit down with Marcel Höche, professional athlete for the Adidas Terrex team, right after his spring swing that includes Big Alta and a podium at the Lake Sonoma 50K. Along the way, he breaks down what surprised him most: the speed of the fields, the variety of terrain, and the post-race community rituals that turn a hard day into a shared celebration. Marcel walks us through the reality of racing Lake Sonoma, a course that looks runnable until you feel how “relentless” it is, plus how weather swings and mud can become an advantage if you thrive in rough conditions. We also talk training and travel, including his time in Cedar City with Hayden Hawks, syncing workouts with his coach and finding the right terrain without ego. If you care about trail running performance, mountain running preparation, and the small decisions that shape a season, this conversation is full of practical insights. Then we go behind the curtain on pro team support with Adidas Terrex: travel planning, housing, physio, chefs, media help, experienced crewing, and why removing that mental load can change how you race. Marcel is also candid about the pressure that can come with resources, his coaching relationship with Dmitry Mityaev, and a training approach that prioritizes heavy strength work and high-quality sessions over piling on “junk miles.” If you're building toward big goals like UTMB week races, steep European mountain events, or long ultras, you'll find plenty to steal for your own plan. Subscribe for more athlete conversations, share this with a trail friend, and leave a five-star review if the show helps your running. We're coming off one of the most action-packed single weekends of the trail running year. We recap Lake Sonoma, Gorge Waterfalls, Desert Rats by UTMB, Calamorro Skyrace, Marathon des Sables, and the BPN Backyard Ultra all in one episode with co-host Alyssa Clark.Lotti Brinks ran fifth overall at Gorge Waterfalls 100K and shattered the women's course record. Dylan Bowman suggested it might be the trail performance of the year, and we ask whether she's now a legitimate podium threat at Western States. Jennifer Lichter won the 50K against Yao Miao, the back-to-back OCC champion, by nearly four minutes, coming off a 100K course record at Black Canyon this past February. She is the truth right now.At the BPN Backyard Ultra, veteran Mike Egan used a wheelchair to complete 110 miles. When the mud got too thick to push through, he got out and dragged it. It might be the photo of the year in trail running, and we're only in April. The event pulled 19.6 million TikTok searches in its first edition, and we ask: who's building the Trail Team equivalent for backyard ultra? At Marathon des Sables, Des Linden made the podium in her desert ultra debut. We call it her arrival in the trail scene. Heather Jackson won Desert Rats 100K three weeks out from Cocodona 250. She has a vlog series called "The Season That Might Break Me" and we break down what her win means for her race at the Cocodona 250 next month. I'm thrilled to connect with Dr. Natalie Crawford today. She's a double-board-certified fertility doctor and the author of The Fertility Formula. Unlike most other physicians, she blends lifestyle and functional medicine with science-based facts, aiming to help women conceive and understand their bodies. While this conversation may not feel fully aligned with the perimenopause and menopause transition, I encourage you to listen with an open mind to what Natalie shares about hormones. In our discussion, we explore fertility as a vital sign, the impact of infertility, and why one in six women experiences infertility. We break down ovarian reserve and the realities of aging. We also cover specific labs that can help assess ovarian reserve and overall health. We explain DOR and POI, the overlap between fertility and perimenopause, and why the ovaries can behave like a “cranky toddler” in perimenopause. Finally, we dive into the role of the gut microbiome in estrogen metabolism and inflammation, and discuss IVF, egg freezing, modern reproductive options, lifestyle influences, and a series of rapid-fire questions. Dr. Crawford's book, The Fertility Formula, is a must-read for women of all ages. It contains many valuable insights, and I love the way she blends an integrative approach with an allopathic approach for her patients. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How fertility serves as a health marker that reflects a woman's hormonal, cellular, and metabolic health The role of inflammation in infertility Dr. Crawford clarifies ovarian reserve, highlighting the importance of understanding egg quality and quantity. Why AMH testing is the most informative first step for women concerned about their fertility Dr. Crawford outlines three factors that can cause missed or irregular periods. The importance of tracking ovulation and understanding the body's signals during perimenopause Inflammation and aging can disrupt chromosome alignment and impair embryo development. How poor estrogen clearance and gut microbiome imbalances disrupt brain-ovary signaling and ovulation timing The link between sleep deprivation and low sperm counts, and how stress and lack of muscle mass can drive insulin resistance and inflammation Why sleep, muscle mass, and stress reduction are all essential for fertility It's essential to approach fertility proactively, and to know how to do that. Today we're diving into a topic that so many women experience but far too few of us are adequately prepared for—perimenopause. My guest is Dr. Mary Claire Haver, a board-certified OB-GYN, Certified Menopause Practitioner, and New York Times bestselling author of The New Menopause and her most recent book, The New Perimenopause. Through her clinical work, her online programs like The Galveston Diet, and her platform The 'Pause Life, Dr. Haver has become a leading voice in making menopause education accessible, practical, and grounded in science. In our conversation, we explore the biological and emotional complexities of perimenopause, why early intervention—including hormone therapy—can be so important, and the gaps in medical training that have left many women feeling dismissed or unprepared. Dr. Haver shares practical strategies for managing symptoms, explains what she calls “The Menopause Toolkit,” and offers empowering guidance to help women advocate for their health and navigate this transformative phase with more knowledge, confidence, and support.  About Dr. Mary Claire Haver  Dr. Mary Claire Haver, MD, FACOG, CMP, is a board-certified Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist, a Certified Menopause Practitioner from The Menopause Society (formerly the North American Menopause Society (NAMS)), an Adjunct Associate Professor at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), a Certified Culinary Medicine Specialist, and a passionate entrepreneur and best-selling author with a focus on women's health. Dr. Haver graduated from Louisiana State University Medical Center and completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at UTMB.  As her patient population grew older, Dr. Haver started receiving numerous complaints and concerns about weight gain during menopause. This inspired her to do a deep dive into the science of menopause, aging, and inflammation beyond what she was taught in school and residency, which led to the creation of The Galveston Diet online program and, in 2023, a national bestselling book. Dr. Haver integrates a patient's medical history, symptomatology, nutrition, exercise, supplements, and possibly hormone therapy, or what she likes to call "The Menopause Toolkit."  Dr. Haver has a large social media following of over 7 million, where she posts advice for menopausal women and learns a great deal from her followers and community. She aims to make menopause care easy and accessible for everyone. She founded The 'Pause Life, a comprehensive approach to menopause education and support, and is the author of the New York Times bestseller, The New Menopause and her most recent title The New Perimenopause.  Things you'll learn from this episode  What differences there are between the biological process of perimenopause and menopause The impact of hormone shifts in estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone on women's mental health and brain fog during perimenopause Ways to effectively communicate with healthcare providers who may not be up to speed on menopause research and/or may be dismissive of symptoms The benefits and timing of menopause hormone therapy during perimenopause Resources mentioned The Pause Life (Mary Claire's website and online community) The New Perimenopause: An Evidence-Based Guide to Surviving the Zone of Chaos and Feeling Like Yourself Again by Dr. Mary Claire Haver The New Menopause: Navigating Your Path Through Hormonal Change with Purpose, Power, and Facts by Dr. Mary Claire Haver UnPaused Podcast Dr. Mary Claire Haver on Instagram Dr. Mary Claire Haver on YouTube Dr. Mary Claire Haver on Facebook Learn more about your ad choices.
