Send us a textSam Lewis brings a wealth of experience to the starting line of the Broken Arrow 46K, having represented Team USA three times internationally and competed in the 23K version of this iconic mountain race twice before. In this compelling conversation, she shares the meticulous preparation that has her feeling "in the best shape of my life" heading into one of the season's most competitive events.Training from her temporary base in Boulder, Colorado has given Lewis the mountain-specific preparation needed for Broken Arrow's demanding terrain. Working with long-time coach Travis Fleck, she's compiled her highest-ever training volume while maintaining the physical health that's become the hallmark of their eight-year partnership. "He's always thinking about what I'm doing not just today, but five years from now," Lewis explains, highlighting the sustainable approach that's kept her performing at an elite level.Lewis reveals her tactical approach to the challenging two-loop course, describing herself as a hunter who patiently waits to strike on the second loop. "I like to hunt down my prey," she says with understated confidence, drawing on lessons learned from aggressive European race starts that left her frustrated. This balanced strategy reflects both physical preparation and philosophical grounding—Lewis holds a PhD in philosophy of sport and embraces the ancient Greek concept of "arete" (pursuing personal excellence) rather than fixating on placements. The conversation delves into equipment choices, including On's new Cloud Ultra Pro trail shoe that Lewis describes as "game-changing," nutrition strategies for mountain ultras, and the profound meaning she finds in representing her country. "Being on Team USA is one of the greatest honors of my life," she reflects, while maintaining perspective about the exceptional depth of American talent. Most compelling are Lewis's insights on mental resilience, drawn from races like the 2023 Verbier Marathon where she battled severe stomach issues yet finished. "It's not if it's going to happen in these ultra races, it's when," she notes about inevitable low points. This hard-earned wisdom, combined with her physical preparation and measured approach, makes Lewis a formidable competitor at Broken Arrow and beyond as she looks toward OCC at UTMB later this summer.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

In this week's episode of the Trail Network podcast, hosts Leah Yingling and Rachel Drake reconnect for a deep dive into recent adventures, personal milestones, and reflections on life, pregnancy, and trail running.Leah kicks off the episode with a recap of her recent trip to Northern Wales, where she crewed for her husband, Mike, at Ultra Trail Snowdonia—a notoriously rugged and stunningly beautiful race often dubbed “Hardrock at sea level.” Leah shares her experience navigating the course logistics, supporting Mike through brutally technical terrain, and balancing the demands of international travel while six months pregnant. The pair also reflect on the underrepresentation of women in ultra-distance events like Snowdonia and the broader implications of participation barriers in these challenging races.Rachel then recounts her rim-to-rim crossing of the Grand Canyon, completed just days prior to recording, as part of a supported project with Osprey and Precision Fuel & Hydration. She offers a raw and thoughtful look at preparing for a major effort while pregnant, including fueling changes, unexpected physical challenges, and the importance of adaptability and community support. The two also reflect on their evolving pregnancies, comparing their experiences, training adaptations, and what it means to find joy in movement during such a transformational time. The episode wraps with a meaningful discussion around postpartum expectations, race deferral policies, and the nuanced realities of running through pregnancy and fertility journeys. They spotlight Stephanie Case's inspiring victory at the 100K at Snowdonia—six months postpartum and breastfeeding mid-race—as well as broader issues around representation, sponsorship policies, and UTMB ranking implications for pregnant athletes. With honesty, humor, and heart, Leah and Rachel celebrate the many ways women show up in the trail world—on the start line, crewing, parenting, recovering, and dreaming big. This episode is edited and produced by the Sandyboy Productions Podcast Network.A special thank you to Osprey for supporting this episode. Venid a conocer”.

Our InnerFight Endurance Ireland crew took on one of the UK's most iconic ultra races across 25K, 50K, and 100K distances – all in the stunning (and brutally steep) Welsh mountains. With UTMB points on the line and legends like Jon Albon in the elite field, the stakes were high – but so was the energy. From training on treadmills and Sugarloaf peaks to navigating freezing mornings and quad-shredding descents, our team showed what real preparation looks like.
Take a run with The Human Potential Running Series podcast. For Episode 66, HPRS Race Director John Lacroix discusses change and transitions. Change can be terrifying to the point that some people avoid it. It can also be necessary to grow. Transition is a word that can better describe change in a positive light. In this episode, John discusses aspects of the ultrarunning community that need to change for the sport to evolve. John also discusses how these aspects have affected his desire to self-identify as an ultrarunner, and how it ultimately leads to a period of transition at HPRS that will occur over the next 2-4 years. This is a heavy, incredibly personal episode, recounting challenging situations that have led to decisions that will affect the HPRS community for years to come.

In this episode, we speak to elite ultrarunner and author Damian Hall. While most teens were experimenting with smoking and drinking, Damian was already running cross-country races. He shares how his journey began with a half marathon in his hometown of Bath, eventually leading him to some of the world's toughest ultramarathons, including the notorious Barkley Marathons. We explore why Damian believes ultrarunning is “easier” than it seems, why he prefers tea over coffee, and what makes the fifth loop of the Barkley so brutal. Insightful, inspiring, and refreshingly honest, this is a conversation every runner should hear.About Vikas Singh:Vikas Singh, an MBA from Chicago Booth, worked at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, APGlobale, and Reliance before coming up with the idea of democratizing fitness knowledge and helping beginners get on a fitness journey. In this week's episode, we're recapping Elena's speedy race and “effort PR” at the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati. We talk through why Elena chose to race a road marathon as part of her build for UTMB, her flexible approach to setting A/B/C goals, how she managed internal and external pressure, why feeling bad during the taper doesn't mean you're going to have a bad race, the mental prep she did to get ready for race day, how she designed and executed her race plan on a challenging course, why body weight has so much less to do with performance than we might think, what it was like to coach her husband Will (who also crushed it!) for this race, and why self-belief was the number one factor that led to her incredible performance. Katie and Elena also cover some fun insights on when and how to choose a big vs. small race, why the ability to “say yes” to anything physically is one of the greatest benefits of endurance training, how we think about integrating chat GPT into our training and coaching strategies (or not), and female athlete body pressures. This is a super rich episode full of insights for any athlete — check it out! Send us a textWhen you hear Lindsay Allison's story, you might wonder how one person balances so many contrasting elements. A Stanford graduate working remotely from Telluride while training at an elite level, Lindsay embodies the modern trail runner who refuses to choose between career and athletic dreams. From her unexpected athletic background in competitive trampoline to her recent signing with Altra and podium finish at Big Alta 50K, Lindsay takes us through the fascinating journey that brought her to the trails. Her connection to Mount Tam, where she first fell in love with running as a high schooler, provides a beautiful through-line to her current life as a mountain athlete in one of America's most stunning landscapes. The conversation delves into the realities of living in remote Telluride – a double-edged sword offering unmatched mountain access but presenting logistical challenges that would deter many elite athletes. "You can be in the Alpine at 6 AM and at your desk by 9," Lindsay explains, revealing how she makes the most of this unique training environment despite its limitations. Her insights about the local running community showcase a refreshing perspective where the experience of the mountains trumps metrics and data. What truly stands out is Lindsay's approach to training volume. Running 100-115 miles weekly while maintaining a full-time job requires extraordinary discipline, yet she discusses it with remarkable practicality. "You have to have a reason for everything you're doing," she shares, offering wisdom about finding the right "imbalance" rather than pursuing perfect life balance.Looking ahead to Broken Arrow, Speed Goat, and ultimately CCC in the UTMB series, Lindsay's thoughtful race strategy reveals an athlete who knows her strengths and how to maximize them. Her candid discussion about race nutrition, including mishaps and solutions, provides valuable takeaways for runners at any level.Whether you're fascinated by the lifestyle of elite mountain athletes, curious about balancing professional careers with competitive running, or simply looking for inspiration from someone charting her own path, this conversation delivers honest insights from one of trail running's rising stars.Follow Lindsay on IG - @l_allisonFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow The Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podThis episode was brought to you by Ultimate Direction! If you like running, this week's episode is for you! Kenton sits down to talk to Hem Rana, a remarkable man who 'got the running bug' after going along to a park run six years ago and has since completed multiple ultras. Hem talks to Kenton about his childhood in Nepal and his application to join the Gurkhas. He remains a serving Gurkha today and has lived in the UK for 27 years working for a variety of Gurkha regiments attached to the British Army. Hem used to run only because he had to, for fitness tests and PT sessions, but in 2019 he tried his local park run (5km) and loved it. Out of curiosity, he gradually built up his distances, moved from road to trail, and developed his confidence. He tells Kenton that he has completed several 100 milers, the Winter Spine race (twice!), UTMB and the Bob Graham Round, to name a few. Hem truly believes that everyone is capable of doing what he has done. If you're looking for a bit of inspiration today, look no further!

Send us a textThe ultra-trail world is buzzing as Canyon's 50K approaches, and we've got the ultimate preview loaded with analysis, predictions, and some good old-fashioned trash talk. In this special episode, host James Lauriello teams up with guest co-host Teddy Tonelli to break down what might be the most anticipated ultrarunning matchup of the year: defending champion Eli Hemming versus 2023 winner Hayden Hawks. These two titans of trail running bring nearly identical impressive résumés to the start line. Hawks recently dominated Terroir 50K with a blazing 3:18:46, while Hemming crushed Big Alta 50K in 3:19:30, leaving elite runners gasping in his wake. As Teddy puts it, "This should have a belt on the line" – it's that big of a heavyweight clash. The women's race promises equal drama with Jennifer "El Lobo" Lichtner squaring off against Tabor Hemming in a rematch of last year's battle where they were separated by just two minutes. Former champion Heather Jackson lurks as a potential spoiler after a disappointing showing at Black Canyon.Beyond the elite matchups, we dive into controversial topics like UTMB's eye-popping race fees ($285 for a 50K!), the exodus of talent from The North Face team, and what it means to "swim with sharks" when racing against the sport's best. We also spotlight dark horses who might surprise everyone, including local favorite Nick Handel and rising star Cade Michael.Whether you're placing bets, planning your race strategy, or just love ultra-trail drama, this episode delivers everything you need to know about one of America's premier ultrarunning events. Claudia Hilton, PhD, MBA, OTR, FAOTA, makes her debut on the Faculty Factory Podcast this week, sharing her journey into systematic reviews and emphasizing the value they provide in promoting critical thinking and research skills among students, learners, and early-career faculty. Dr. Hilton serves as Professor and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) School of Health Professions in the Department of Occupational Therapy. Despite facing skepticism from peers about the practicality of systematic reviews with students, her persistence has led to the successful and innovative implementation of this approach over the years at UTMB. "I have had naysayers tell me that you can't do systematic reviews with students. However, we have already published about 20 of them. So I say, yes, we can, but there are certain things you need to consider to make it successful," Dr. Hilton said. Through Dr. Hilton's enthusiasm we celebrate the use of systematic reviews amongst learners in academia! We encourage listeners to consider integrating similar collaborative approaches in their own institutions. You can email Dr. Hilton to learn more: clhilton@UTMB.EDU. Send us a textIn this enlightening conversation with ultrarunner Jazmine Lowther, we explore the dynamic intersection of elite performance, career transitions, and authentic living in the mountain sports world. Jazmine takes us inside her recent move from The North Face to Arc'teryx, revealing the emotional complexity of brand identity for professional athletes and the forward-thinking athlete support systems being developed in the industry.Training in Squamish British Columbia brings unique challenges—freezing rain, challenging terrain, and a community where extraordinary multisport days are the norm. Jazmine shares how this environment shapes her approach to training while preparing for races like Canyons 100K, where she'll return as a former champion. The candid discussion about mental fortitude required for Pacific Northwest winters offers valuable perspective for anyone training through challenging conditions. The conversation takes fascinating turns through coaching philosophy, where Jazmine emphasizes human connection over training metrics. "Communication is the foundation for the coach-athlete relationship," she explains, detailing how understanding an athlete's life stressors, relationship challenges, and mental health is crucial to effective coaching. Her approach to running retreats and holistic athlete development reveals a thoughtfulness that extends far beyond physical performance. We tackle complex industry questions about race consolidation, the UTMB ecosystem, and finding balance between professional opportunities and grassroots racing culture. Jazmine's balanced perspective acknowledges both the visibility major race series bring while valuing the community events that build the sport's foundation. Her personal dilemma between targeting Western States or UTMB highlights the scheduling challenges elite athletes face in today's crowded calendar.Perhaps most compelling is Jazmine's reflection on authenticity in the trail running community, where she values genuine connections over curated perfectionism. For anyone navigating the intersection of passion, profession, and purpose in outdoor sports, this conversation offers invaluable insights from someone balancing competitive excellence with genuine human connection.Follow Jazmine on IG - @jazmine_lowtherFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow The Steep Stuff on IG - @steepstuff_podThis episode is brought to you by Ultimate Direction - use code steepstuffpod for 25% of your cart at checkout
