First up, Tim Tollefson returns to the show. In some ways, trail running is still having its “What Are We Even Doing?” moment. Through that lens, we take a look at the UTMB era, the rise of pro circuits, what the pros care about, and what happens when a grassroots sport takes bigger steps towards big-time structure. After that, I'm joined by Alyssa Clark for a roundup of trail running business news and ideation. Welcome to episode 276 of the Women's Running podcast. I'm your host Esther Newman and she's your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running. This episode is sponsored by Coopah, the running app. Find out how you can bag 20% off the annual subscription with us!The Hidden RaceApols for the start of this podcast which is very scatological, as you'll soon find out. Moving quickly on, this episode we have a special guest in the shape of Hannah from Hoka, a field experience rep. She's talking to us about The Hidden Race, a film that's been created in collaboration with SportsShoes and Hoka to focus on the crew behind the runners. This is where you find all the love and support that fuel the people who run these big races like UTMB. Hannah has crewed for her partner Darren, and she explains how she got into doing that, what you have to do as a crew member, and how she ended up featuring in this film, and what we can expect when we watch it this weekend – it airs for the first time at the Kendal Mountain Festival, but will be available to everyone on the SportsShoes Youtube channel. After the interview, we're back in the room to talk about how rubbish we'd be at crewing (obviously). Right at the end, we talk about a controversial race that never happened…Am I Nuts?Don't forget to listen to Am I Nuts on a Monday – this week we're talking about whether we should be worried about getting married, and it is all kicking off.Join us on PatreonIf you aren't a patron yet do join us on Patreon for just £2 a month, through which you can join Discord, our forum just for you. Kia ora e te whānau. We want to invite all who can be upstanding to welcome one R. Croft of Greymouth back for her Tenth appearance on Dirt Church Radio. We are Ruth fans. If there was a RAT for it (Ruth Antigen Test), we'd be positive. Or is that CAT? (Croft Antigen Test?). ANYWAYS. It's been a minute since we've talked to old mate, and after an abortive attempt post UTMB (Thanks, French Internet, you dork), Ali P gets together for a long overdue catch-up with Ruth about the year she's had, and what it was like to finally knock the bastard off. The bastard in question is of course, UTMB. This episode also finds our heroes discussing if they'd volunteer themselves as tribute for a fox hunt (them being the fox), the Queenstown and Aotearoa Afghanistan Marathon, and a Greatest Run Ever for the ages..
After two years of rehab and earning her spot via a Golden Ticket roll-down, Abby Hall stormed into history at the 2025 Western States 100, running 16:37:16 for the fourth-fastest women's time ever and finishing 11th overall.Hall has since cemented herself as one of the premier athletes in the 100K–100-mile range, highlighted by podium finishes at UTMB's CCC (2nd in 2021, 3rd in 2022), a win at the 2022 Transvulcania 73K, and a debut finish at Western States in 2021.Her résumé includes a 16:37:16 100-mile best and an 8:52:35 trail 100K at Black Canyon — showcasing world-class range when it comes to varying terrain and courses. But her rise did not come without adversity. Early in her ultra career, she scraped under the cutoff at the Leadville 100 in 2017 and 2018. And in June 2023, a training fall resulted in a tibial fracture and major ligament damage, requiring reconstructive knee surgery and a long, uncertain recovery. From scraping cutoff times at Leadville to running one of the fastest Western States in history, Abby Hall's comeback is the ultimate story of resilience and redemption–and you won't want to miss how she did it. Send us a textThe plan was simple: go test the 100K waters. The reality was a masterclass in pacing, hydration, and what happens when marathon instincts meet an eight-hour mountain day. Chad Hall brings candor and clarity to his Kodiak debrief—why he went out hard, where the wheels came loose around Snow Summit, and how he'll rebuild for another shot. From there, we widen the lens: short trail versus ultras, why 50K deserves more respect in the U.S., and how cycling's strength engine can transform uphill running without sacrificing leg speed on descents. We trade notes on altitude strategy for Pikes Peak, the balance between sea-level power and high-elevation adaptation, and practical ways to integrate strength—heavy lifts, bike blocks, or ski mountaineering—when schemo isn't an option. Chad traces his arc from triathlon to domestic elite cycling to trails, and explains how coaching, long mountain days, and flat-speed workouts all fit inside a program designed to resist fatigue and stay smooth on technical terrain. Then we go deeper. We push on the professionalization of trail running, UTMB-style event culture, and the line between authentic partnership and hollow consumerism. Chad is honest about sponsorship: only promote what you'd buy, center the mountains, and protect the community's soul. We also challenge the hype cycles of social media and the attention economy, where presentation can outrun performance and algorithms shrink our view of the world. Finally, we wrestle with AI and work—what jobs mean, where meaning comes from, and how a conscious buyer base can reshape the outdoor industry for the better. If you enjoy conversations that braid training insights with bigger questions about culture and purpose, this one will stick. Kia ora e te whānau. Things we learned on this week's episode. We suck collectively at Maths, there is such a thing called a Wet Globe Bulb Temperature (WHAT?!?!?), We are all pro-Kipchoge winning Western States. Despite their relative masses, Andrew and Matt cope conversely in the heat (at least psychologically) and are aligned in our distaste of the UTMB kilometre effort industrial complex. The gang is back together for the literal and figurative heat of the Grapian's Peak Trail and Arrowtown Ultra. In this incredibly open and honest episode, we sit down with guest Caroline McKay for a chat that spans her roots on the Isle of Mull, and the profound emotional journey that led her to ultra running. Caroline shares her recent success at the California Fall Classic and the powerful motivation she carries with her on the trails.Caroline reveals she "hated running" early in life and discusses her upbringing on the Isle of Mull, living an outdoors lifestyle with her marine biologist parents and working on their shellfish farm. Caroline recounts moving to Manchester at 17 to work in a nightclub and also work in fashion, and how she went down a "disruptive path" involving heavy smoking, drinking, and substance use. Caroline talks about moving back to Edinburgh, being a major milestone for her health. A friend planting the seed about the 53-mile Highland Fling race introduced her to ultra running.Caroline speaks about getting into ultra running podcasts like Trail Runner Nation, Ultra Runner podcast, and Talk Ultra. She mentions being inspired by Ellie Greenwood and the empowering feeling of seeing women like her succeed. There is a brief mention of Caroline's own podcast, Of Mountains and Minds, and her experience interviewing the incredible Jasmin Paris. An impulsive, wild story about a trip to the US to support a record-breaking trans-American run attempt which ended in a mess, a pulled sponsorship, and an NDA.We discuss running the West Highland Way and getting into the Western States 100 lottery for 2013. She talks about her training and preparation, including running the Great Wilderness Challenge (23 miles). We have a deep dive into Carolines fuelling strategy, including using Huma Chia gels, salted potatoes, and salt tabs.Caroline shares her motivation, including the goal of not having another DNF (mentioning the Georgia Death Race and UTMB) and drawing strength from her kids.Caroline shares her pride in her recent California Fall Classic race, hitting her goal of going sub-16 hours with a time of 15:48

What went right and what went wrong...which includes a lack of carbs for the last 30+ KMs (but we won't talk about that for too long) Although this race didn't go exactly to plan, its agreed that its actually a great success. In this special episode, I welcome Dave Pen, singer and musician from the band Archive, and Alexis Berg, filmmaker and photographer, to talk about their film Run Again, premiering at the Grand Rex on November 12.One man, seven identities, one questDave defines himself through seven identities: husband, father, brother, friend, son, singer, runner. In January 2023, between concerts on Archive's European tour, he took on one of the toughest races in the world — the Spine Race: 430 kilometers of near-total self-sufficiency through the frozen English countryside.A story that begins in a Southampton alleyIt all starts during his first run, when Dave stops halfway, exhausted… then sets off again. Perhaps it's there, in that alley, that Run Again is born — the moment he discovers he's someone who always gets back up.From chaos to lightWe look back on Dave's journey: his childhood in Southampton with a father battling depression through running, his early years as an electrician before joining Archive, and his discovery of trail running in the woods — where he finally found peace. In 2015, from his hotel room in Chamonix, he watched the start of the UTMB and set himself a wild goal.2020: when everything collapsesThen came Covid. Archive could no longer tour, and Darius Keeler, the band's founding member, was fighting cancer. Dave returned to his job as an electrician to support his family. In the midst of this chaos, he chose the Winter Spine Race as a new horizon. The meeting of two artistsAlexis Berg, who had first seen Archive live at age 20, met Dave years later. Together, they decided to document his quest. But how do you film such raw vulnerability? How do you find the right distance from suffering? Alexis reflects on his approach — and on the duality between light and darkness that runs through his work.145 hours in the PenninesWe follow Dave along the course: his doubts, his tears, his bond with James — the companion he sings to mid-race. His parents waiting by the roadside. The mantra he repeats over and over: “I am a husband, I am a father, I am a brother, I am a friend, I am a singer, I am a runner.”Run Again: neither a film about trail running nor a film about musicIt's the story of a genuine, humble man in pursuit of happiness. A universal quest that speaks to us all. A film about the need to begin again — over and over — whether by passion or necessity, we're never quite sure.Photo: Alexis BergAttend the Grand Rex screening on November 12: https://www.billetweb.fr/the-run-again-show***Course Épique is the running and trail podcast that brings you extraordinary running stories in every episode.
He has placed 5th in UTMB (2018), 4th in Tor des Geants (2023), and has won the Spine Race. He has competed in the infamous Barkley Marathons ultra twice.Damian is also a founder of The Green Runners which is a global community of over 3000 runners who aim to highlight and take action on the climate and ecological crisis. Their 4 Pillars consider How We Move (travel), How We Kit-up, How We Fuel (diet), and How We Speak Out (activism). Damian talks us through the formation of The Green Runners, as well as talking about campaigns and activism, such as action taken against sportswashing. One of Damian's books is 'We Can't Run Away From This' which examines running's carbon footprint and ways to improve on this. In September 2025 and on the back of his Lakeland 100 win, Damian set out in suboptimal weather for his Three Solo Challenge where he attempted to run the UK Big Three rounds (Charlie Ramsay, Bob Graham and Paddy Buckley rounds) linked together by public transport. The Big Three had previously been linked together by car by Mark Hartley (1990) and then by bike by John Kelly (2020) in his Grand Round. Damian's round would add the vagaries of Britain's public transport system into the mix. We talk logistics and sleep deprivation, deteriorating weather, and about how he made the eventual decision to bail due to worsening conditions on the final half of the Paddy Buckley round in Snowdonia. Send us a textA week after tackling a steep Canadian classic, two-time Leadville champion Adrian Macdonald joins us to chart a season that nearly went off the rails—and how he brought it back. After Western States left him drained and “half-sick,” bloodwork confirmed anemia. Adrian pressed pause on workouts, added iron, and rebuilt with patience. That decision reshaped his plans: fewer hero efforts, more deliberate steps. Now he's heading to Ultra‑Trail Cape Town's 100 miler to practice night pacing, big vert management, and problem‑solving—key skills he wants dialed before returning to UTMB.We trace Adrian's path from Massachusetts soccer and college track to Boston road marathons and, finally, Colorado trails. Winning Leadville unlocked travel, sponsorship, and a renewed sense of racing—not just time‑trials—but it also brought pressure and a few humbling lessons. He learned race specificity the hard way: the same engine that crushes runnable high altitude doesn't guarantee success on technical, hour‑long burners. His solution is pragmatic and refreshing. Choose one major ultra a year, sometimes two. Add short, sub‑ultra mountain races as tune‑ups to sharpen nerves, descents, and pacing without the deep fatigue of an ultra. Mix in East Coast staples like Mount Washington for nostalgia and family time, and lean on a supportive Fort Collins crew—mentors like Nick Clark and training partners who keep the work honest. We also go inside the On Running ecosystem, where rapid gear innovation and a cross‑discipline team culture keep Adrian inspired. From plated trail shoes to polished kits, he's part of a brand sprinting forward while still celebrating the messy, human side of ultras. If you've wondered how to rebuild after a rough race, plan a smarter season, or pick courses that actually fit your strengths, this is your blueprint. Enjoy the story, steal the strategies, and tell us what big race you're targeting next. If this conversation resonates, follow the show, leave a quick review, and share it with a friend who loves big climbs and bigger comebacks.Follow Adrian on IG - @macdonaldadrianFollow Adrian on Youtube - @adrianmacdonaldContact Adrian - @adrian.runFollow James on IG - @jameslauriello Follow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_pod Use code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Sometimes the hardest race isn't 100 miles through the mountains - it's figuring out who you are when everything in your life changes.Amanda is a professional trail runner and endurance coach with a Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University. She has coached endurance athletes for 10 years in everything from 5k - 200 miles. She is an Oregonian originally and now lives and trains in Colorado. Amanda ran collegiately for a couple years and then got into road marathons. It wasn't until 2014 that she discovered trail running after an injury from pounding the pavement. Amanda was instantly hooked and jumped into the ultra scene. She's very competitive so she made it a goal to become an elite trail runner. She accomplished that goal in 2015 and won the 50 mile USATF Trail Championships as her first race as a professional. After that, she traveled the world and raced as many of the top trail races as she could, including Western States 100, UTMB, CCC, Tarawera and Ultra Trail Capetown.Jon chats with Amanda about:Struggling with imposter syndrome as a professional runnerSports psychology workMoving from ultra volume to speed work and shorter distancesBalancing professional obligations with family lifeRedefining success and moving beyond performance metricsStay connected:Follow Amanda:https://www.instagram.com/amanda_basham/Amanda's Website:https://www.amandabasham.com/This episode is supported by:Janji: Use code “FTLR” at checkout when shopping at janji.com for 10% off your order and see why Janji is the go-to for runners who want performance gear made to explore. It's a full plate this week on The Free Outside Show. I'm diving into Terminus Season—that bittersweet time when thru-hikers take the photo, post it, and wonder what's next. Then we get into Trail TMZ, where a defamation lawsuit is brewing, and I try not to get sued for talking about it.From there, we climb the philosophical peaks of Richard Feynman, Christopher McCandless, and Killian Jornet, somehow connecting it all back to neuromas, the UTMB money machine, and why you should just do the thing—even if nobody understands it.There's science (a running study that might change how you train), there's gossip (Wikipedia wars are back), and there's reflection (because post-trail life is weird). As always—stay mid-America, stay elite, and remember: nothing matters, but also everything does.support our sponsors: CSinstant.coffeejanji.comgaragegrowngear.comChapters00:00 Observations on Social Interactions02:36 Navigating Post-Adventure Challenges05:44 The Dynamics of Ultra Running Events08:29 Understanding Terminus Season and Post-Trail TransitionSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

This week we dive into a packed show, starting with a look at the Kona “wild cards,” the women outside the obvious favourites who could still make a big impact on race day. We then turn to Jan Frodeno, who swapped triathlon for trail and did something special at the Nice Côte d'Azur by UTMB, winning his age group over the 55 km course in his debut appearance. In race results we cover Ironman Chattanooga, the XTERRA World Championships, and Ironman Wales before recapping WTCS Weihai where Max Studer and Beth Potter took the wins. Scott Johnston is one of the top coaches in the world, especially in mountain and high alpine sports. He's worked with Killian Jornet and recently coached both winners of the most prestigious trail race on Earth, UTMB (Tom Evans & Ruth Croft). I know it can help you, too. Resources: Training & Coaching Programs Scott's last podcast appearance SR's YouTube channel Thank You Lever! I'm excited to partner with Lever - a bodyweight support system that helps you run further or faster with less effort and injury risk. You've probably seen pro runners using Lever - it attaches to any treadmill and you hook into it like a harness. It effectively makes you lighter, enabling you to run more volume than you normally could with reduced injury risk, run faster with less effort, or return to running after an injury more effectively. Lever allows you to do more running with less risk. From building mileage, introducing faster workouts, aiding your return to running after a break, Lever has a place in every phase of training. The pro's have been using Lever for years, giving them the advantage of more training with fewer injuries. They're also common in physical therapy offices. Because you can run with less body weight, you can gain fitness and practice good technique without risking your recovery. Go to levermovement.com and use code Strength20 for 20% off any system (and that's with a capital S). If you're injury-prone or are looking to take a big swing at your goals this year, now is the time for Lever. That's levermovement.com with code Strength20 for 20% off any system. Just like beetroot but more effective, blackcurrant berries are vasodilators, helping you get more blood flow where it's needed, quickly and efficiently.
