This week we are talking with Tara Dower. Tara is an ultramarathon trail runner completing some of the most well-known races on the planet such as the Hardrock 100 miler, Black Canyon 100k, Devil Dog Ultra, Ohio Backyard Ultra running 170 miles, and she has thru hiked the 211 mile John Muir Trail. Tara recently set the fastest known time on the 2190 mile Appalachian Trail completing it in 40 days, 18 hours and 6 minutes, averaging a mind boggling 56.4 miles per day and breaking the prior record by 13 ½ hours. Taras goal during the Appalachian Trail FKT was to raise $20,000 for the nonprofit, Girls on the Run. Her hope was to inspire women and girls to go for that tough goal no matter if it's with running or in life. The very night she finished the AT at 11:53pm, they hit her goal of $20,000. Since the word has gotten out about this record, people have shown up and donated an additional $31,000 bringing the total to $51,203. Her primary sponsor, Altra, has also decided to give $45,000 bringing the grand total to $95,153 as of November 13.Instagram: @tara.dowerYouTube: www.youtube.com/@taratreksWebsite: tara-treks.com/Chapters00:00 Introduction to Tara Dower and Her Achievements03:13 The Role of the Crew in FKT Attempts06:04 Nutrition and Caloric Needs During the FKT09:07 Tara's Running Background and Evolution11:57 Mentality and Mindset in Endurance Events14:49 Weather Challenges During the Appalachian Trail FKT17:58 Overcoming Low Points and Hallucinations20:23 Hallucinations and Mental Challenges During Ultra Running22:16 The Last Push: Overcoming Exhaustion26:09 Recovery After the FKT: Physical and Mental Effects29:44 Life Changes Post-Achievement: New Opportunities32:27 Fundraising Success: Supporting Girls on the Run33:30 Working with Sponsors: Building Relationships34:32 Future Goals: Speed and New Challenges38:54 Trail Nicknames: The Story Behind 'Candy Mama'The Co-Movement Gym Podcast is supported by Native Path Supplements and Lombardi Chiropractic.
The first time Tara Dower got on the Appalachian Trail, she only lasted a handful of days before anxiety and mental health forced her to abandon her goal of through-hiking the 2,000 mile footpath. But she didn't give up. In 2024, Tara got back on the A.T. with the goal of claiming the FKT—fastest known time. When she reached the finish line in only 40 days, she became the fastest human ever to cover every mile of the A.T. This down-to-earth and hard working woman will push you to keep making forward progress on your aggressive life, and to keep getting up when you fall down.

Send us a textAlright, meet Tara Dower, AKA "Candy Mama” (a trail name born of sugar and love for her trail mates); while she's refined some of those habits… the sweet, sweet nickname still stands.Tara set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Appalachian Trail, powering through 2,189 miles in 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes. To put that in perspective, that's like running from Calgary to Toronto…while climbing Mt. Everest 16 times. (My feet hurt just thinking about it!)So Who's This Crazy MOFO? Tara is the definition of grit, making it on the news as an endurance phenom. This is not Tara's first stab at the Appalachian Trail, previously accomplishing a thru-hike over the course of 5 months in 2019. Her first attempt in 2017 ended early due to a massive panic attack just 8 days in. If that bit of perseverance isn't enough, Tara shifted her goals and intentions with completing this hike to enjoy the challenge, not just another box to tick!Pit Crew to the Rescue! Tara is a metaphorical race car, fueled by a pit crew swapping out shoes like tires. Along the way, Tara raised over $50,000 for Girls on the Run along the way, mentoring the next gen of fearless female athletes. Her feat is part of a new wave of women pushing limits in endurance running. Even a powerhouse like Tara doesn't celebrate till it's over, claiming that she knew she'd made it when she got close enough that “Even if I fall and break my leg, I'll crawl! ” (Talk about GRIT baby)Whether you're an endurance athlete or you've just got a tough goal, take a note from Candy Mama: set your ego aside, follow your curiosity, and remember—if you don't try, you'll never know. In one of the most impressive endurance accomplishments of the year, Tara Dower set the overall Fastest Known Time on the 2,000+ mile Appalachian Trail earlier this year in 40 days , 18 hours, and 6 minutes. It was an attempt that required mental toughness, extensive planning and curiosity, teamwork, and incredible endurance. So, if you're going for an FKT attempt or your next big goal, this is the episode for you! We turned our attention to three big stories this week: Tara Dower's new FKT on the Appalachian Trail, the controversy over Camille Herron's Wikipedia edits, and the two press releases from the Boston Athletic Association regarding entry into the Boston Marathon. We had a lot to say about each of them, including hearing Michelle's first-hand account from the finish line of Tara's run!
Doing a special bonus episode drop with Tara Dower again. She just completed the Fastest Known Time on the Appalachian Trail(2,189 miles). This was a stout record that other elite athletes have attempted. She completed the AT in 40 hours, 18 hours, and 6 minutes, which comes out to about 54 miles each day. It required her to wake up at 3AM each day to log miles before the sun came up and keep running until after the sun went down. I helped out by providing weather forecasts for her and her team. Her new record beats all other times, male/female, northbouth/southbound, for the new overall record. She is inspiring in so many ways and she was also doing this to help raise money for Girls on The Run. Check out Tara's Instagram or the Instagram account set up for the AT FKT called ChumpChangeFKT.

Huge episode tonight! A lot to talk about. Farley gives a run down of his experience running Mountain Lakes 100 over the weekend. We both are in awe of Tara Dower's accomplishment setting the overall FKT on the Appalachian Trail, it's truly impressive. We go over race results from Mountain Lakes 100. Then we talk about one of the icons of ultrarunning, Anton Krupicka, who came out of nowhere and took second at Grindstone 100. We go over the results of the other races at Grindstone. Also talk about the young gun Hans Troyer who ran Grindstone 100K and it was his first race since taking 10th at Black Canyon 100K, where he ended up in the hospital afterwards with rabdo. Unfortunately Grindstone didn't go his way and he ended up with a DNF. We then talk about a possible shady maneuver the first place runner did to block the second place runner during a sprint to the finish at Mammoth Trail Fest 26K which was a Golden Trail World Series Event with major prize money on the line. We also go over the results from Mammoth Trail Fest races, the Barkley Fall Classic, the Cowboy 200, Pikes Peak Ascent and Pikes Peak (not quite) Marathon. Max King and Hayden Hawks both had some success at events overseas. We go over results from Dances with Dirt (Hell, MI), Flagstaff to Grand 100, IMTUF 100, and there is a new self-supported FKT on the Colorado Trail. Finally we end the show with the breaking news / controversy about Camille Herron and her husband + coach Conor Holt who got busted editing the wiki pages of other elite ultrarunnners to make them look less significant and editing her own page to seem more elite. We marveled at the athletic performance of the year to prepare for this great episode! It kicked off with us picking our jaws up off the floor, in awe of Tara Dower's overall record on the Appalachian Trail. Coach Megan delves into what made it possible (strides and speed) and what sets Tara apart (being a superhero). This achievement will take decades to fully process! The main science talk was a new study on Kilian Jornet's physiology data from 2022 UTMB, where he won in historic fashion. There are some wild pieces of information in this study that push the limits of what we know about endurance: biomechanical adaptations like reduced cadence, remarkable metabolic flexibility, shockingly high lactate levels, major reductions in hemoglobin, big variations in carb intake, and perhaps most interestingly--post-race cognitive impairment similar to brain injury patients. We jump into each finding, mixing theory with speculation about what comes next. And this one was full of the best topics! Other topics: David's decision about whether to do the Javelina 100 Miler in October, a pros v. cons list, 7 tips for ultra logistics, why we hate chairs, Anton Krupicka qualifying for UTMB, rhabdo in college lacrosse and what runners can learn, a discussion of the amazing essay "A Case Against Supershoes" by Sabrina Little, a study on cooling headbands, the limitations of statistics in smaller sample-size studies, and how elite athletes fuel. This might be the most exciting time in running history, with breakthroughs in performances and in research, and we can't wait to share it with you all! Plus, jokes about Halloween costumes that show butt. We love you all! HUZZAH! Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! This past Saturday night at 11:53 PM, Tara Dower set the fastest known time on the Appalachian Trail in 40 days 18 hours 5 minutes, besting Karel Sabbe's 2018 mark by 13 hours and 32 minutes.Starting August 12th at 5:47 AM, Dower averaged 54+ miles per day over 2,197.4 miles of rugged and relentless terrain from Maine to Georgia to set the mark.In masterfully riding a fine line of passion, grit, faith, and resourcefulness, Tara and her crew have set a new standard on this trail. I said this on an Instagram post shortly after the news broke, but I'll say it here as well - it's easy to get caught up in the moment, especially in a year that has seen the likes of the first female Barkley finisher, a UTMB course record, and a Hardrock course record - but is this the female performance of the year? Or better yet, is this the overall performance of the year regardless of gender? This is an amazing time to be in the sport. With all that said, we were fortunate to have Tara on the podcast shortly after her feat. In this conversation, we cover topics all about the Appalachian Trail record around her background, preparation, strategy, execution, mindset, and processing of this monumental achievement. If you want more long-distance hiking trail or Appalachian Trail trail-specific content, be sure to check out our interviews with Will Peterson, Warren Doyle, and Jennifer Pharr Davis from the past year.
