Send us Fan MailThey say “rest day,” but the Tour de France never really rests. We're back with a mid-race reset from the 2026 Tour de France, recapping where things stand after 15 stages and why Stage 16's individual time trial could still shake the leaderboard. Between huge mountains and unpredictable weather, the race has already delivered the kind of chaos that makes fans either fall in love with cycling or start yelling at the TV.We dig into the biggest storylines: Pogacar's wins and the growing talk of cycling immortality, Evenepoel's breakthrough road stage and his best shot to gain time against the clock, and Pidcock's high-risk breakaway style that brings points, penalties, and controversy. We also talk crashes and the weird moments that can flip a Grand Tour in seconds, plus the reality that even proven winners can hit total exhaustion in the high mountains. Then we go where cycling always leads sooner or later: anti-doping. We unpack what it means when riders get woken up at 2 a.m. or 5 a.m. for testing, how the athlete biological passport fits into modern enforcement, and why storing samples for 10 years is both reassuring and unsettling. Along the way we debate what “fair” looks like when sleep, recovery, and performance are all tied together, and we ask whether today's systems match what the sport needs in 2026.If you're following the Tour de France, love time trials, or just want smarter cycling analysis without the fluff, hit play. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP What a week of racing at the Tour de France! It's safe to say that with Jonas Vingegaard's unfortunate abandonment, the race for the podium has been blown wide open! I gave EF Education EasyPost DS, Tom Southam, a call to go over everything we've seen in the second week of the Tour and preview what's coming up. Kicking off with a recap of everything that's gone down both in and around the race last week, and it started with a dominant victory from Pogačar in Le Lioran. Some amazing instincts from Søren Wærenskjold saw him win the bunch sprint on stage 11 to continue Uno-X Mobility's success, before Tim Merlier reminded everyone that he's the fastest sprinter in the race with his third stage win of the Tour the next day. Stage 13 saw Mauro Schmid power his way into the mega break and grab a stage win for Jayco, so who better to chat to than his team mate, and regular “guest” on the Pod, Durbo. It was great to hear from Luke as he enjoys a well-earned rest day, and he gave us a great scoop on the team's tactics and how their game plan played out pretty much perfectly. The two mountain stages on the weekend weren't the only drama - a 2 am dope test for Jonas and Pogi had the media buzzing, so I had to ask Southam what he knows and what he's heard from the ground. Is it a bit of a flex from WADA, or is there something going on?! With Jonas' abandonment, and a mountain TT coming up, can Remco Evenepoel bag another stage win and close the gap to Pogi? Will Del Toro finish on the final podium? What about the green jersey battle between Pedersen and Philipsen? There's still so much to come, and I can't bloody wait to see how it plays out. Guys, it's a rest day, so pull another shot of espresso, sit back, and join me and Southam - dialling in live from EF's rest day Chateau - for some Tour de France chat. Rest day, and it's a big one — 43 voice notes to get through and only twenty minutes of the show that were meant for them.Max and Alex start on the 2am testing saga engulfing the GC battle — Vingegaard and Pogačar's out-of-hours tests, the ITA's "severe suspicions" line, and a very direct take from a rider with history on the subject that's got Max rethinking the whole thing. From there it's full voice note mode: Remco's TT gap, the AFL/cycling crossover conversation (yes, we're drafting Buddy Franklin onto a WorldTour team), an A2 Milk pitch for the show, and Max's top ten Melbourne sandwiches — Barry's Garage gets the nod.Big one: we're doing a Tour de France Femmes show starting August 1, and we need a co-host who actually knows the peloton. Got a suggestion? Get into our DMs.Plus — Max explains why he'd never marry Peter Sagan, does some very rough maths on how fast he could hold 30 minutes at threshold, and there's a Triple M cameo before sign-off.

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP The first nine stages of the Tour de France have been absolutely brutal! As Southam predicted, it has just been non-stop racing every day. In fact, it's been so hard that Durbo's decided to bank some extra hours in bed rather than join Tom and me for this special episode of The Race Communiqué! That's right, it's the first rest day of the Tour, and I wanted to take advantage of our man on the ground - EF Education EasyPost DS Tom Southam - to discuss what we've seen out in France so far. There have been some epic days of racing! The TTT kicking things off in Barcelona was just as exciting and dramatic as we'd have hoped, the following stages through the Pyrenees into France in the sweltering heat, the first mountain stages and the expected Pogi domination, right through to yesterday's epic classics style stage - it's been a full-on start…and there's still nearly two weeks of racing to go! Watching from home, seeing the boys suffering in the heat, it definitely makes me glad I retired when I did. Of course, Southam - as tired as he is - hasn't actually been riding the race, so we did manage to get a quick voice note from Greenedge's own Luke Durbridge to hear straight from the horse's mouth how it's been in the Pelo. As Durbo puts it, it's been hell. Only nine stages in, but still so much to talk about. Tom and I go through our top five moments of the race so far, as well as predictions for what's to come. Guys, this is a rest day special to keep your Tour de France fix coming even when the race is having a day off. I can't wait to see how the next phase of the race unfolds. Hey hey beautiful human! Most women know they need rest days, but a lot of them have never been taught what a rest day is actually supposed to do. So they skip the workout, sit on the couch, scroll for hours, stay up too late, maybe eat less because they "did not earn it," and then come back to training still tired, still flat, and confused about why they do not feel recovered. That is the difference between simply not working out and actually recovering. One gives your body a break from training, but the other gives your body the sleep, fuel, gentle movement, and mental space it needs to repair, rebuild, and come back stronger. In this bonus episode of Embrace Your Real, I'm breaking down why rest is not something you earn, why rest day guilt can quietly work against your progress, and how to make your recovery days actually support the results you are working so hard for. What's Discussed: Why there is a real difference between a recovery day and just not working out What your body is actually doing on rest days and why it needs support to do it well How passive rest can leave you feeling just as tired, or even more drained, than before Why rest day guilt keeps your body in a stress response and works against your recovery How gentle movement, better sleep, and proper fueling help your body repair and rebuild How protecting your mental space on rest days matters just as much as the physical side If you have ever finished a rest day and still felt off, or guilty, or like you should have done more, this episode is going to shift the way you see that part of your routine. Carlos reported in from near King's Pond on a Wednesday rest day, where he checked on the ducks and admired a tame wood duck before continuing toward the golf course for water. He reflected on how his running schedule shifted week to week and spoke about recent concerns with his breathing, heart rate, and overall cardiovascular health as he compared his walking and running pace. Along the route, he described the sunny weather, blackberry patches, and the Derby Road Connector while listening to a true crime podcast and thinking about the differences between professional podcasting and his own real-time recordings. He also mentioned that his neighborhood's water supply was temporarily shut off for maintenance, forcing residents to prepare by storing water ahead of time. By the time he reached the Cedar Hill golf course clubhouse, he had completed five kilometers, stopped for hydration, and signed off from what he called a full real-time recording of his walkBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-running-jackal--500980/support.

Hey hey beautiful human! When results stall, the first instinct is always to do more. More cardio. Less food. Harder workouts. But what if the thing getting in the way has nothing to do with any of that? Most women who feel stuck are already showing up. They are consistent. They are trying. And the habits that are quietly working against them are the ones they would never think to look at because they do not look like fitness habits at all. In this episode of Embrace Your Real, I walk you through those five things that are secretly sabotaging your results and what to do about each one tonight. What's Discussed: Why dehydration is tanking your performance and sending false hunger signals without you realizing it Why working out every day does not cancel out sitting for the other twelve hours Why doing cardio you dread is keeping cortisol elevated and actively working against your goals What body checking is, why most women do it constantly, and why it is draining the joy out of the process Why self-criticism is not keeping you accountable and what the research says actually works instead Ready to find a program that fits into a real full life without requiring perfection? When your progress has stalled, your cravings feel out of control, and your body never fully recovers, the common instinct is to blame your training or your nutrition. But while those things matter, there is one thing that overrides all of it the moment it goes wrong, and most women never think to look at it. Sleep. In this episode of Embrace Your Real, I walk you through seven specific things that are quietly disrupting your sleep and exactly what to do about each one tonight. And what you will find is that some of the habits you think are helping you are actually the ones working against you the most. What's Discussed: Why sleep is the missing piece most women never think to look at Why skipping carbs at dinner raises cortisol overnight and wakes you up at 2 or 3am How finishing intense workouts too late keeps your nervous system activated when it should be settling Why chronically high cortisol leaves you wired but exhausted and what to actually do about it The half life of caffeine and why your 3pm coffee is still in your system at 9pm What social jet lag is and why inconsistent sleep and wake times are costing you recovery Why a warm or bright bedroom is actively working against deep sleep The one thing to start with tonight If you want a program that takes recovery just as seriously as the training itself, head to movementwithjulie.com to get started inside the Movement With Julie app. Rest days are programmed intentionally into the weekly schedule so your body always gets what it needs to repair and change. Most people treat soreness as proof that a workout worked, the more destroyed you feel the next day the better the session must have been. But soreness is not a measure of effort or progress, and training through it the wrong way is one of the most common reasons people plateau, get injured, and end up taking more rest than they ever intended to. In this episode of Embrace Your Real, I break down the science of what is actually happening in your body when soreness hits and why the conventional wisdom of either pushing through it or resting completely is getting it wrong. I also get into why active recovery beats both of those options in most cases, what protein, carbohydrates, hydration, and sleep are each doing for your recovery at a cellular level, and how smart programming eliminates the guesswork entirely so your body is always training hard and recovering smarter. What's Discussed: Why soreness is not proof your workout worked and what it actually means What DOMS is, why it happens, and when it peaks The difference between normal soreness and pain that is a genuine warning sign Should you train through soreness and the honest answer What active recovery actually is and why it beats complete rest How to program around soreness so you never hit the same muscle group twice Why protein is the most important recovery tool you have Why carbohydrates matter more than most people realize after a hard session How dehydration is quietly making your soreness worse than it needs to be Why sleep is where most of your muscle repair actually happens How to know when soreness is information and when it is a warning If you want a workout program that already has recovery built into the structure so you are never guessing which muscles to train or when to pull back, head to movementwithjulie.com to get started inside the Movement With Julie app. If you loved this episode, you'll also love: Episode 413: The Importance of a Rest Day.It will help you take everything you learned here and apply it in a way that actually protects your progress instead of quietly undermining it. If you've been working out consistently but feel like your progress has stalled, this episode is for you. I break down five subtle workout mistakes that can keep you spinning your wheels, even when you're putting in the effort. These are the habits that feel productive in the moment but quietly slow your long-term results. Here is what you will learn: • Why training to failure on every set can limit recovery and strength gains • How treating every workout like a PR day creates burnout • Why deload weeks are essential for continued progress • How under-recovering between sessions impacts muscle growth • Why tempo and time under tension matter more than you think If this episode opened your eyes to something in your own training, don't stop here. Go listen to Episode 413: The Importance of a Rest Day and 7 Reasons You've Stopped Seeing Results After Years of Training to keep building on what we talked about today. Rest Day Live | Jenn Lichter and Anthony Costales on Black Canyon 100K Rest Day Live returns tonight with two of the main characters from the 2026 Black Canyon 100K. Women's champion Jenn Lichter and men's runner-up Anthony Costales join us live from ACG team camp in Palm Springs as they decompress from their standout performances on Saturday. We'll speak with each of them individually about how their races unfolded, the immediate aftermath, and what comes next on the road to Western States. Jenn delivered a remarkable 100K debut in one of the fastest editions of the race, while Anthony put together a statement performance after a challenging stretch of racing, declaring at the finish line, "I'm still here." We're excited to dive deeper into both stories live at 5:00 PM PT. –––––––––––––––––– Race Registration Register for The Big Alta https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=130943 Register for Gorge Waterfalls https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=129366 –––––––––––––––––– Sponsors Osprey Grab a trail running pack at https://www.osprey.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=trail%20runnng NEVERSECOND Nutrition Use code FREETRAIL25 for 25% off your first order https://www.never2.com –––––––––––––––––– Freetrail Links Website https://freetrail.com/ Freetrail Pro https://freetrail.com/freetrail-pro/ Patreon https://www.patreon.com/dylanbowman Instagram https://www.instagram.com/runfreetrail/ YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8MKI1xB8YMchI1764zJXHg Freetrail Experts https://freetrail.com/freetrail-experts/ –––––––––––––––––– Dylan Bowman Instagram https://www.instagram.com/dylanbo/ Twitter https://twitter.com/dylanbo LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/dylan-bowman-06174380/ Strava https://www.strava.com/pros/1596921
