POPULARITY
In this episode of Trail Society, Corrine Malcolm, Keely Henninger, and Hillary Allen dive into one of the biggest weeks in trail running, the 2025 UTMB Finals. From brutal weather and historically high dropout rates to some of the closest top-10 finishes ever, the crew breaks down all the drama across OCC, CCC, and UTMB. They highlight standout wins from Jim Walmsley, Ruth Croft, and Francesco Puppi, celebrate trailblazing performances from athletes representing countries new to the UTMB stage, and reflect on the growing but still uneven women's participation numbers. Beyond the race results, they explore what it means for athletes to double between UTMB, Hardrock, and upcoming World Championships, and touch on the ever-buzzing brand scene in Chamonix. Beyond the race, the crew highlights systemic challenges in sport: Strava and For All Mothers+ awarded $2,000 grants to 50 athlete-mothers to cover childcare costs and training expenses, directly addressing the “motherhood penalty” that prevents so many women from competing at the highest level. Tune in for a mix of insights, stories from the ground, and the unique perspective only this crew can bring. We loaded up on sympathy baguettes for UTMB racers before recording this great episode! The main topic was digesting everything from UTMB week, including Jim Walmsley reinforcing his GOAT status, Courtney Dauwalter reinforcing hers, the coolest coaching story ever from Scott Johnston (who coached Ruth Croft and Tom Evans to UTMB wins), training takeaways, and so much more! The science breakdown looked at a new study that is being used to argue that low carb doesn't hurt high-intensity performance. We dive into the study design and statistics to show why that's the wrong conclusion. And this one had so many great topics! Other topics: going dark on the trails, Megan's new fast shoe, our trail supershoe rundown, the new Champion Plan for 100k to 100 miles, the minimum dose of passive heat training, using weight vests, what makes a good coach, a relationship question, relying on liquid carbs, engaging the glutes, drinking from streams, and climbing form. What's for dinner? We'll take the European Aid Station--baguettes, sausage, cheese, sparkling water, techno music, and being unable to drop out due to the language barrier. We love you all! Send us a textGet ready for an exhilarating UTMB OCC race preview that blends expert analysis with laugh-out-loud banter! James Lariello teams up with Teddy Tonelli from the Chasing Trail podcast to break down this iconic 55K mountain race that features over 11,000 feet of climbing through some of the most spectacular terrain in the Alps. The duo dives deep into what makes OCC special - from its technical course that prohibits switchback cutting to the mandatory gear requirements that add an extra layer of challenge. With forecasts showing potential rain and temperatures ranging from 48-68°F, the stage is set for an unpredictable battle on the trails. At the heart of this preview is the much-anticipated showdown between Jim Walmsley and Adam Peterman, two American ultra-running stars rarely seen competing in the same race. Has Walmsley's move to France (and his newly acquired French accent, as the hosts joke) given him the European edge? Can Peterman, coming back from injuries, reclaim his position among the elite? The hosts also highlight other Americans to watch including Michelino Sanseri and rising star Cade Michael. On the women's side, defending champion and course record holder Mao Yao returns to face stiff competition from Switzerland's Judith Weider and a strong American contingent led by Hannah Allgood and Sophia Lockley. Canadian Jasmine Lather, fresh off setting records on the Grand Teton, brings her exceptional climbing ability into the mix.Between the analysis, Teddy and James deliver hilarious commentary on everything from European shower habits to the dangers of aggressive Alpine cows, making this preview as entertaining as it is informative. Their chemistry shines through as they debate their podium picks and contemplate the future of betting in trail running.Whether you're planning to follow the live coverage or just want to understand what makes OCC one of the most competitive races of the UTMB weekend, this episode offers the perfect blend of insight, predictions, and trail running culture.
Send us a textThe legendary Speedgoat 50k isn't just another mountain race—it's a brutal test of endurance that has humbled even the sport's greatest athletes. With 11,400 feet of climbing packed into 31 miles at altitudes reaching 11,000 feet, this Karl Meltzer creation has rightfully earned its reputation as America's toughest 50k.James and Nick dive deep into what makes this race so special, tracing its rich history through the performances of ultrarunning royalty like Kilian Jornet, Anton Krupicka, and Jim Walmsley. They analyze David Sinclair's mind-blowing course record (4:57:35) set last year when he became the first runner to break the 5-hour barrier, while marveling at how the women's record has incredibly stood untouched since Anita Ortiz ran 6:02:06 back in 2008.This year's field might be the deepest in race history. The women's battle features defending champion Jasmine Lowther, Broken Arrow winner Jennifer Lichter, mountain running star Grayson Murphy stepping up in distance, and local favorite Mally Noyes who knows every inch of the course. On the men's side, Michelino Senseri stands as the clear favorite—the only runner in the field who has broken 5:20, and he's done it twice. What makes the conversation particularly fascinating is the hosts' analysis of the unique skills this course demands. Unlike many ultras, Speedgoat rewards ski mountaineering strength and climbing ability over pure running talent, explained by the exposed nature of the course running across ski slopes with minimal tree cover. Weather becomes crucial too, with cooler temperatures potentially setting the stage for record attempts.Whether you're planning your fantasy picks, preparing to race, or simply love the drama of mountain ultrarunning, this preview provides all the insights you need to understand why Speedgoat has become one of the most respected measuring sticks in trail running—a race where legends are tested and new ones are born.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

His fearless front-running and relentless pace put him on the radar of fans and competitors alike. Now, with another year of focused training, refined systems, and added motivation, Rod returns with something to prove—not just that he belongs, but that he's ready to win.In this conversation, we dive deep into the mindset and lifestyle of a modern pro trail runner. Rod pulls back the curtain on the level of commitment and precision it takes to not just go pro, but stay pro. This marks their first podcast appearance as a duo, and it's an open, honest, and often funny conversation about racing, crewing, and building a life around shared passions.Jess shares how her background in gymnastics shaped her approach to movement and competition, and why she often finds just as much joy in supporting others as she does in chasing her own finish lines. Jim reflects on the evolution of his ultra-running career, from Western States to UTMB, and how Jess's support behind the scenes has been a cornerstone of his success. We dive into:How they navigate race day as a teamThe emotional highs and lows of crewing and competingWhat it means to maintain balance, fun, and purpose in a high-performance lifestyleTheir thoughts on equality in sport, authenticity, and what really matters at the end of the day

We gulped down some pungent juice before recording this amazing episode! The main topics were the two big pieces of news: Jim Walsmley won't be racing Western States, and Kilian Jornet is making training videos now. Jim is the GOAT and we gave him an 85% chance of winning just last week. He's the supermassive black hole at the center of the Western States galaxy. Without Jim at the start line, how does it change the race? Kilian is the GOAT too (yes, we have a GOAT herd), and he just released a training video! He abides by the "no secrets" approach, and we analyzed every frame of that video to try to find clues about whether he might be beatable. Answer: no. Bonus answer: Kilian is the best and it's fascinating that he started his own video series by talking about his heat training. And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: our magical coaching day at the US Mountain Championships, thoughts on training for mountain races, Unbreakable 2 cancellation, the wild triumph of Simon Yates, a new bicarb gel that could upend the bicarb market, the wild science of broccoli sprouts and a new juice supplement from Nomio, anti-histamines and athletic performance, why we're eating dark chocolate (it tastes good), lung training via breathing devices, the relationship between speed work and form in ultras, a hypothetical about Conner Mantz racing Leadville or Western States, an article in the New York Times on unethical mountaineering, training with a newborn, dealing with life transitions, fitting the Naked Belt, the cost of running, cheaper suphershoes, and an incredible poem on failing and flying.Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew. Also, if Icarus had broccoli sprouts and Kilian's training video, maybe he would have flown a bit longer. We love you all! HUZZAH! Send us a textFrom track star to mountain master, Dan Curts path to the pinnacle of sub-ultra trail running defies conventional wisdom. While many elite athletes flock to western training hubs like Boulder or Flagstaff, Kurtz has embraced the harsh New England winters and technical terrain of his Northeast home. "Four below this morning," he mentions casually, "but that teaches you something that has to translate to real mountain running."After a collegiate career at Iowa State that left him questioning his relationship with running, Kurtz found renewed purpose in mountain races. Now a three-time Team USA representative who has competed at World Championships in Thailand and Innsbruck, he offers rare insights into the challenges and rewards of pursuing excellence on the trails. His candid discussion about breaking his toe in Thailand, rebuilding fitness through skiing, and preparing for the upcoming season reveals the unfiltered reality of professional trail running. The conversation explores fascinating territory beyond racing, from van life and Brooks' emergence as perhaps "the best sub-ultra trail team on the planet" to the neurological aspects of race-day cramping. Kurtz makes a compelling case for the Northeast as an underappreciated training ground, suggesting that the increased presence of high-profile races like the Cirque Series might finally bring deserved attention to the region. With honest reflections on the pressure to make another World Championship team and admiration for innovators like Jack Kenzel and Jim Walmsley, this episode offers a window into the mind of an athlete operating at the cutting edge of mountain running's evolution.Want to hear more from the athletes reshaping trail running? We took off our armor for this incredible episode! The main discussion might have been one of our most important (and fun) ever: the Big Alta 50k DNF, failure, and what it truly means to go for it. David raced Big Alta because it was somewhere that he couldn't hide. We needed to gather data about what happened at the very edge of human capabilities. And when you F around...sometimes you find out. We hope that you feel a connection to your big scary dreams. Thank you for giving us the courage to dream bigger! And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: racing lessons from Big Alta, why ankles are annoying, guys v. dudes, running your own race, Jim Walmsley dominates at Chianti, Kilian is going to Western States, sauna v. hot tub, going from 0 to 1 to 2 kids, running groups, bike v. treadmill, core work, life "balance" for people with big goals, long-term training builds, and lots more. This episode gives you a raw window into the true story that athletes rarely tell. We lifted some styrofoam plates painted like metal before this great episode! The main topic was a new study showing improved fatigue resistance for athletes doing heavy lifting twice per week. Yes... we regret to inform you that we think you should probably have a squat rack nearby. Prepare your butts. We also answered a question on carb intake after exercise, framed around a pro triathlete recently announcing that they had high hemoglobin A1C. We talk about some of the complications of that particular story, and also how high-carb fueling during training may change fueling approaches overall. This episode is not sponsored by Country Time Lemonade, but the Country Time people need to call our people. And there were so many other great topics! Other topics: our first date run in 6 months, Jim Walmsley's dominant 50k, an offer code for the Wahoo Run Treadmill, grunting during training, timing nutrition intake, creating supportive environments, why health is the missing link in many training approaches, fitness and speed offsets, watch data, cadence, and the main thing to look for if you suffer from cramps. This episode is a Public Service Announcement for medicated creams. On today's episode of the Free Outside Show, we're joined by Grant Barnette—a thru-hiker turned Pro ultrarunner who has tackled some of the toughest races in the world. Grant has hiked the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, holds the DC Peaks 50 course record, placed 2nd at Grindstone 100, 5th at Speedgoat 50K, and was the third American at CCC at UTMB. Most recently, he signed a pro contract with Craft. Follow Grant online: https://www.instagram.com/runwithgrant/ We dive into how he transitioned from carrying a heavy pack on the PCT to discovering Angeles Crest 100 in middle of a thru-hike, his nomadic lifestyle living out of his truck while chasing FKTs, and his journey through ski mountaineering and backcountry adventures in Utah. He shares his take on training with a job, fueling strategies, sponsorships, and the challenges of race selection for the US Trail Team. The Tecton X3 features an upgraded midsole featuring two layers of PEBA foam, with one softer layer on top for cushioning and impact, and a slightly firmer layer underneath for agility proprioception on technical terrain. The propulsive parallel carbon fiber plates have evolved – now featuring winglets, the wider plates wrap strategically up the sidewall for additional control in key zones. In the upper, a new knit collar acts as a gaiter to help mitigate trail debris from entering the shoe. Launching just in time for the UTMB Mont Blanc World Series, The Tecton X3 will be seen on HOKA elite athletes competing at the highest level in Chamonix, France. Inviting consumers and fans of the sport to learn about the innovation behind the brand's most pinnacle trail release yet, HOKA will be opening their FlyLab™experience dedicated to the Tecton X 3 in celebration of UTMB, located at the HOKA Base Camp in Chamonix Village, and open from Tuesday - Friday of race week.
