In this week's edition of Singletrack News, Kilian Jornet announces he'll attempt the Western States–UTMB double in 2026, reviving a strategy some thought was fading from elite playbooks. We also examine Ironman's decision to ban in-race content creation, including smart glasses, GoPros, and phones. Is this about safety, competitive fairness, or the beginning of a broader shift in endurance sports culture? Could trail running follow?Elsewhere, we break down Abby Levine's analysis of the Western States 2026 field - including the surprising stat about back-to-back women's champions, the depth emerging from Golden Ticket races like Black Canyon and CCC, and what still remains up for grabs at Chianti and Canyons.Plus:Chuckanut announces a first-ever livestream in partnership with Mountain OutpostTransgrancanaria previewNike ACG's experimental “smallest backyard ultra” activation in MilanITRA's 2025 Women in Trail Running participation reportAravaipa launches The Cutoff film tourUTMB postpones its Puerto Vallarta event following regional unrestPartners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next order (https://www.precisionhydration.com/planner/?utm_source=partner&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=singletrack)Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/singletrack)Janji - premium trail running apparel (https://janji.com/pages/singletrack)Support the show

Co-host: Henri AymonodOspiti: Kilian Jornet, Xavier Chevrier, Tito Tiberti, Paolo Germanetto

Kia ora e te whānau. What a way to kick off 2026 with this awesome conversation with Goat Tongariro winner Jackson Cole. Jackson spoke with Matt from his base in Missoula, Montana. We touched on the usual topics like training and racing. Still, the conversation primarily centered on Jackson's history and ethos—from Wellington to Colorado and beyond —rooted in adventure, the joy of experience, and a love for wild mountain terrain. He spoke about valuing the simplicity of running over gadget obsession, preferring to listen to his body and embrace what the day brings, and his love of a well-earned off-season, something foreign to many Southern Hemisphere runners. We all stand on the shoulders of giants, and, interestingly, for a relatively younger athlete, Jackson takes a postmodern approach to running media, rejecting the absolute truth of the ultrasphere and social media whilst being a professional athlete. Jackson's love of classic New Zealand books on running—he referenced Rod Dixon and Dick Quax during our conversation, and the former's famous quote of wanting to drink beer and train like an animal—alongside the more recent (but still relatively old by today's standards) of Anton Krupicka and Kilian Jornet running up the Grand Teton, was a refreshing and inspiring viewpoint. We dare you to listen to this and not be stoked.

For the final episode of 2025, Zoë and Brendan share their own year-end reflections, summits, snacks, and slogs,  including Zoë's experience hitchhiking to the start line of a 78-mile race in Italy, arriving 90 seconds before the gun went off to stand between Kilian Jornet and Jim Walmsley in a downpour that would last 15 hours. Then they pull their favorite moments from this year's interviews. You'll hear coach Mario Fraoli explain why the marathon is where racing ends and insanity begins. Steve Magness on why running might be the healthiest cult you can join. Alex Hutchinson on the effort paradox, why we value things because they're hard, not in spite of it. Sabrina Little on running as a laboratory for virtue. And Dan Lieberman, who co-authored the original "Born to Run" research, telling Zoë and Brendan to their faces that ultra running is absolutely, completely, and totally bizarre. The main science topic was a new study on Kilian Jornet at Western States, breaking down his fueling, the metabolic demand, and lots more. Kilian is also the 2nd author on the paper! We've said it before and we'll say it again: In a world of external monitors, be the rectal thermometer. We also talked about the amazing saga of USA Skimo's Olympic qualification, featuring trail runners Anna Gibson and Cam Smith. This story needs to be a movie! In the meantime, a podcast will have to do.And this episode was full of amazing topics! Other topics: David's bad experience at the track, when data and belief conflict, Courtney Dauwalter's blazing fast marathon time, a shoe review rant, what it means to improve VO2 max, why effort is cool, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels, training through colds, and the perils of NCAA running and short-term incentive structures. This episode finishes with the most joyous time of all: A PERIOD PARTY. Send us a textA Tahoe childhood can shape an athlete for life—and Noah McMahan proves it. At 19, he's a Gonzaga steeplechaser who keeps his easy runs on dirt, wins Broken Arrow 11K off a Hayward Field PR, and carries hard-earned lessons from the World Mountain Running Championships in Spain. We talk about the quiet confidence it takes to recover from injuries, the patience to build fitness through a long collegiate season, and the racecraft to navigate tight European singletrack when the start line explodes. We dig into what it means to balance D1 expectations with trail ambitions: coach buy-in, smart training blocks, and the reality of fitting a “fourth season” into a college calendar. Noah opens up about recruitment from a small Nevada school, why team culture sold him on Gonzaga, and how a kinesiology major helps him stay healthy. He breaks down the Worlds course—road surge, singletrack congestion, switchback duels—and the two changes he'd make next time: more hill-specific work and earlier positioning to avoid bottlenecks.Gear talk includes Nike Ultrafly on race day, a rotation that's open to Saucony for daily miles, and curiosity about adding poles for steeper 23K goals. We share inspiration from Max King, Kilian Jornet, Jim Walmsley, Ruth Croft, and the next wave of hybrid athletes bridging track, road, and mountain disciplines. If you're a young runner considering a future in trail running—or a fan who loves the sport's evolving pathways—you'll hear a clear blueprint for turning college structure into a sustainable pro trajectory. If this story resonates, follow the show, share it with a teammate, and leave a quick review on your favorite app. Your support helps us bring more emerging voices and big trail dreams to the mic.Follow Noah on IG - @noah_mcmahan_Follow James on IG - @jameslauriello Follow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_pod Use code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Lewis Wu is one of my running training partners and someone I've shared many trail adventures with: long climbs, heat, altitude, fatigue, and plenty of laughs. As the CEO of COROS, he didn't fall in love with running right away; it was data, curiosity, and steady progress that drew him in. From those first “boring” miles to recently finishing a brutal 100K, Lewis has built endurance with patience, consistency, and a willingness to keep showing up no matter how hard it gets.   Thanks to LMNT for sponsoring this video! Originally aired in Oct 2024 - just as insightful today! In this two-part Javelina 100 'Run it back' episode, hosts Corinne Shalvoy and Russell Ditsworth explore the magic, madness, and mastery behind one of ultrarunning's most iconic events. In the first episode, they capture the full scope of Javelina's unique energy, where costumes, community, and chaos meet the challenge of the desert. Arizona veteran and 10x Javelina finisher, Deb Hamberlin shares how the race has evolved from a small local gathering into a global endurance festival. Her insights reveal what keeps runners coming back year after year, from the electric aid stations to the mental grind of heat, loops, and laughter under the Halloween sky.In part two, 2022 Javelina 100 champion Dakota Jones opens up about his record-breaking performance and the mindset that carried him through five desert loops. He shares details of his pacing, heat management, and late-race battle with John Rea, along with a deeper look at how patience and adaptability define success in the ultra world. Dakota also discusses his work as a climate advocate through his Footprints Running Camp and how his partnership with NNormal and Kilian Jornet connects purpose with performance.Together, these conversations highlight what makes Javelina 100 unlike any other race on earth: a blend of party and precision, grit and joy, where personal passion meets the broader spirit of the trail running community.

Send us a textStart in city gravel, end on a knife-edge ridge. That's the arc of Kyle Richardson's 1,300-mile Northeast Summits Tour—fifteen days, 84,000 feet, and six peaks stitched together by a bivy, a bike, and a refusal to overplan. We talk about why he treats endurance like an art form, how loosening timelines kept motivation high, and what it means to curate routes that flow from Catskill roots to Adirondack slabs, across the Whites, and onto Katahdin's cathedral spine. We get tactical without killing the magic. Kyle breaks down mapping with Gaia GPS, weaving the Empire State Trail, Eastern Divide, and local connectors, plus the on-the-fly decisions that save you from interstates and dead ends. He shares stealth bivvy habits, smart resupply strategy in the Maine woods, and the gear that actually works: hydrophobic, big-lug trail shoes that drain fast in boggy terrain and a tidy kit that looks presentable from diner to trailhead. We dig into recovery while moving daily, the mental cadence of silence vs. sound, and why his east coast takeaway is simple: technical, steep, and slept-on can be world-class.There's more beyond the Northeast. Kyle unpacks his Boulder–Steamboat ride for Moots' 40th anniversary—crossing divides, tagging Longs Peak, and dropping Rollins Pass—plus the South Platte Twirl, a two-night Colorado loop that blends singletrack, OHV roads, gravel, and quiet pavement. We revisit his pre-tour dawn linkup on Longs with Kilian Jornet and the lessons in communication, safety, and community that came with it. If you're hungry for routes that balance beauty, efficiency, and honest difficulty, this one's a map you can trust. If this conversation sparked ideas for your next ride or run, tap follow, leave a quick review, and share it with a friend who needs a nudge to plan less and move more.Follow Kyle on IG - @kylerichardsonFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Send us a textChristian Allen takes us deep into the rugged heart of the Pyrenees as he prepares to represent Team USA at the World Mountain Running Championships. The reigning US Mountain Running Champion opens up about the wild, technical trails of Canfrank that barely resemble paths at times—"They stuck flags into a bunch of rock that you're just hiking up. It's really steep."Fresh off his stunning victory at Broken Arrow, where he outpaced legends Kilian Jornet and Joe Gray, Allen reveals the strategic approach that's transformed his running. "I've been working with David Roach and he definitely focuses on running economy and turnover more than when I was coaching myself," he explains, crediting this shift for his breakthrough performances despite coming back from a six-week injury layoff earlier this season.Beyond the physical aspects of elite mountain running, Allen shares how his family and faith provide deeper meaning to his athletic pursuits. The father of two recounts touching moments of his children's involvement in his racing journey, including his son's disappointment after a fourth-place finish: "He was super mad and just in the worst mood ever... he said he hated the guy that won the race because he beat daddy." These personal insights reveal the human side of a champion who balances world-class athleticism with fatherhood and spiritual purpose. As Team USA looks toward potential gold at the World Championships, Allen's confidence is measured but unmistakable. "I think we can definitely podium. I don't see why not, and everyone in the back of their mind is shooting for gold." His preparation, mindset, and journey exemplify what it takes to compete at the highest level of mountain running while maintaining perspective on what truly matters most.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

History of the Pikes Peak Ascent & Marathon with Mark Tatum, Re-Release

Send us a textWhat makes a mountain race become legendary? In this deep dive into the historic Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent, we're joined by Mark Tatum to uncover the remarkable journey of America's third-oldest and longest consecutively running marathon. From its unlikely origins—when a Finnish doctor challenged smokers to race him up the mountain in 1958—to Arlene Piper becoming the first woman to complete a marathon in the United States in 1959 (in "dime store tennis shoes"), the race's heritage is as rich as the mountain is tall. We explore how the Jemez Pueblo runners dominated the early years and how Matt Carpenter's obsession with the mountain created records that stood untouchable for decades. The mountain itself becomes a character in this story, humbling even the greatest athletes who've attempted to conquer it. We dissect the strategic challenges of racing at 14,000 feet, where oxygen drops by 40%, the infamous "W's" section can make or break your race, and unpredictable weather adds another layer of complexity. Through the years, Pikes Peak has witnessed the evolution of trail running itself—from local heroes to international superstars like Kilian Jornet, Rémi Bonnet, and Kim Dobson making their mark.Whether you're a mountain running enthusiast or simply fascinated by endurance challenges that push human limits, this conversation reveals why Pikes Peak continues to captivate runners worldwide. As one racer put it: "It's just you're constantly wondering if you're going too hard and if you're going to die. It's the ultimate mental battle." And perhaps that's exactly why they keep coming back.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Our favorite episodes involve answering listener questions in a "no secrets" style. That means we might be right, we might be wrong, but we'll always be honest (and hairy!).We started with a game theory analysis on how we think this year's Western States 100 will play out. This is the type of conversation that athletes have before every race, but they usually wouldn't play it out in public. We can check our work in 2 weeks! And then we broke down tons of great questions! Topics: what drives us, messages from our younger selves, The Feed's new high carb mix that is resetting the cost curves, responders and non-responders to passive heat, going for it at the back of the pack, diagnosing and improving offsets between climbing and flats, adding passive heat v. adding more training, whether you need heat training in the summer, a couple hypotheticals on road and track athletes coming to trails, a spicy hypothetical on Kilian Jornet, adding weight vest training, balancing competition with self-acceptance, sub-ultra v. ultra for making the sport more accessible, getting into coaching, and the popularity of Park Run in the UK v. the US.May your legs be carbed-up and may your hairs not be given names on a podcast. This episode was such a fun mix of science, emotions, and hot tubs that could cook a turkey! We started with some thoughts on Western States, less than 3 weeks out from the race. Does embracing the stage also mean embracing social media posts telling you that you aren't being picked to perform well? Our argument channeling Tyrese Halliburton of the Indiana Pacers: the “noise” can be performance enhancing if you have fun with it!The main science topic was a WILD study on the hot tub improving hemoglobin levels, resting heart rate, and altitude performance. It's “wild” because the hot tub was set astonishingly high, with participants staying in for an astonishingly long time. I like my participants like I like my eggs: hard-boiled. We talk about what it means and why passive heat training might be the easiest advanced training intervention that goes beyond the basics. And this one was full of our favorite topics! Other topics: a training trip out to the Western States course, Kilian Jornet searching for a pacer, Cam Jones consuming 185 grams of carbs per hour on his way to winning Unbound Gravel, Jessie Diggins' amazing poem on fueling her body to take a hit, a study on ketones and altitude that found no benefits, using downhills to improve strength for flat running, and a genetic link between muscle stiffness and strains, plus a Q+A on the new OTQ standards getting faster for men (we don't like it), whether to GO FOR IT if going for it might not lead to your big goals, a hypothetical about gold medalist Kristian Blummenfelt at a mountain race, and heat and family planning. The episode finishes up with questions about alcohol and celebrity-flavored bathwater. It'll make sense soon. Maybe. We love you all!
