Want a better year without burning out? Zoë and TJ share a practical, five-step blueprint to use your transition season to set up your best race year—without quitting running or living in the gray zone. You'll learn how to keep frequency high (with easy intensity), sketch a long-range plan (1–3 A-races, smart tune-ups), match workouts to the right phase, and treat recovery like training so adaptations actually happen. We also tackle Hot-or-Not topics trail runners ask about: super shoes on road workouts, whether a shoe “quiver” really prevents injuries, and the truth about fueling with olive oil or swapping gels for candy. (Short version: practice what you'll race with, and don't copy Kilian.) If you're planning a 50K, 100K, or 100M, you'll hear when “real/solid” foods can help and why gut training matters. Subscribe for evidence-based coaching you can actually use.

Lewis Wu is one of my running training partners and someone I've shared many trail adventures with: long climbs, heat, altitude, fatigue, and plenty of laughs. As the CEO of COROS, he didn't fall in love with running right away; it was data, curiosity, and steady progress that drew him in. From those first “boring” miles to recently finishing a brutal 100K, Lewis has built endurance with patience, consistency, and a willingness to keep showing up no matter how hard it gets. We studied up on some beefs (Strava v. Garmin, Taylor v. Charli, pastrami v. sirloin) before this awesome episode! The main science topic was a new study evaluating low carb and high carb approaches, with and without caffeine. It's another brick in the wall supporting higher carb for adaptation. We also talked about the Strava lawsuit! Last week, we defended Strava like the big fans we are, only for them to file suit against Garmin over decade-old patents a day later. It doesn't seem to make sense from the outside. But as last week shows, what do we know? We talk about the details and speculate on some theories. And this one was full of so many great topics! Other topics: Megan's hungry girl era, uphill treadmill threshold training, our hot (lukewarm) takes on Taylor Swift's new album, Kilian's mind-bending States of Elevation project, the new beta fuel gel with electrolytes, a study evaluating advanced foams in trail shoes, and an AI study on sleep and jet lag recommendations, plus a Q+A on forgetting to eat, carbs in team sports, balancing cycling and running, carbs per hour, training in supershoes, doing adventures while following a training plan, why max heart rate isn't a good metric to track over time (or base HR zones on), calculating hill gradients, and post-exercise ketones.Taylor Swift's song “Wood” says “I don't need to catch a bouquet, to know a hard rock is on the way.” We assume she is talking about the Hardrock 100 mile race and she has a way to get around the lottery. You really can have it all.We love you all!

This week, we discussed a few different things happening in the endurance sporting world, and as usual, we offered our takes on them. We started by talking about the men's and women's marathons at the World Championship, both of which ended in sprint finishes! We went on to discuss the unfortunate recent doping positive of UTMB OCC winner Joyline Chepngeno, considering why and how it may have happened in light of what we have learned about doping culture in Kenya. We talked a bit about Kilan Jornet's latest adventure--a massive undertaking in which he's climbing all 67 14,000-foot peaks in the United States and cycling between them. And finally, we talked about Jeff Garmire's experience on the Appalachian Trail, where he is on the verge of setting a new FKT for a self-supported traverse.
Today we are honored to welcome legendary Powell Peralta pro Kilian Martin back to the venerable BBAS studios for an in-depth Intelligence Report! From his early years surfing in Spain to finding skateboarding, discovering freestyle, creating his massively popular video series with Brett Novak, moving to the US, starring in an Apple Watch commercial and ultimately getting sponsored by three of his 1980's dream brands, we cover it all- and much more. We conquered the WOOHOO yips before this amazing episode! The main science topic was on a new study that examined the causes of injuries in a 5205-athlete sample. The headline finding was relatively intuitive, but the sub-finding was so shocking that we are still picking our jaws up off the floor. We break it down and discuss how it may clarify training theory! And this one was full of our favorite topics! Other topics: the yips in athletes (and podcasters), Megan's Aspen Mountain breakthrough, the interaction of high carb and bicarb to make endurance sports faster, the best protein supplement we have tried, one of our heroes Kate Courtney wins the Leadville 100 mountain bike, Kilian's next project in the USA, Steph Curry doing weight-vest trail running, and the tricky conversation around bodyweight and health happening in women's cycling. Plus there was a Q+A on the mechanics of podcast recording, nutrition considerations for vegan athletes, the complications of rhabdo in ultra athletes, “purposeful flow” in training plans and how that relates to a new study on overload blocks, overcoming fear in racing, daily carb intake, and high carb in the birth process. It finished with a quote that we'll be living by. We gulped down some pungent juice before recording this amazing episode! The main topics were the two big pieces of news: Jim Walsmley won't be racing Western States, and Kilian Jornet is making training videos now. Jim is the GOAT and we gave him an 85% chance of winning just last week. He's the supermassive black hole at the center of the Western States galaxy. Without Jim at the start line, how does it change the race? Kilian is the GOAT too (yes, we have a GOAT herd), and he just released a training video! He abides by the "no secrets" approach, and we analyzed every frame of that video to try to find clues about whether he might be beatable. Answer: no. Bonus answer: Kilian is the best and it's fascinating that he started his own video series by talking about his heat training. And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: our magical coaching day at the US Mountain Championships, thoughts on training for mountain races, Unbreakable 2 cancellation, the wild triumph of Simon Yates, a new bicarb gel that could upend the bicarb market, the wild science of broccoli sprouts and a new juice supplement from Nomio, anti-histamines and athletic performance, why we're eating dark chocolate (it tastes good), lung training via breathing devices, the relationship between speed work and form in ultras, a hypothetical about Conner Mantz racing Leadville or Western States, an article in the New York Times on unethical mountaineering, training with a newborn, dealing with life transitions, fitting the Naked Belt, the cost of running, cheaper suphershoes, and an incredible poem on failing and flying.Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew. Also, if Icarus had broccoli sprouts and Kilian's training video, maybe he would have flown a bit longer. We love you all! HUZZAH! We put on our space cowboy outfits for this great episode! The main topic centered on the almost-ubiquitous use of higher carb intakes in recent races, from the Canyons 100k to the Boston Marathon to the cycling classics. What once seemed optional is now mandatory. Where do the next breakthroughs come from? We outline some ideas to try to catch the waves before they become obvious. There was also some fascinating science on warm-weather and metabolic processes, showing reduced carb oxidation rates in heat. That could have big implications for how fueling and GI training changes with harder efforts. And this one was full of the best topics! Other topics: Megan's heat suit debut, our current thinking on heat suit guidelines, David's 50k race, what he is learning approaching Western States, fluid intake, a study on intense PM exercise and sleep, the wild Canyons 100k, Kilian's fascinating training approach for Western States, a follow-up on the shoes dominating the road scene, the Breaking 4 Project, and putting power in your stride, plus a Q+A on steep vert, Jess McClain's Boston Marathon training, and fueling from gas stations! You are all heat champions to us. May you be blessed with the stickiest treadmills. We love you all!
