This week, we discussed a few different things happening in the endurance sporting world, and as usual, we offered our takes on them. We started by talking about the men's and women's marathons at the World Championship, both of which ended in sprint finishes! We went on to discuss the unfortunate recent doping positive of UTMB OCC winner Joyline Chepngeno, considering why and how it may have happened in light of what we have learned about doping culture in Kenya. We talked a bit about Kilan Jornet's latest adventure--a massive undertaking in which he's climbing all 67 14,000-foot peaks in the United States and cycling between them. And finally, we talked about Jeff Garmire's experience on the Appalachian Trail, where he is on the verge of setting a new FKT for a self-supported traverse.
Today we are honored to welcome legendary Powell Peralta pro Kilian Martin back to the venerable BBAS studios for an in-depth Intelligence Report! From his early years surfing in Spain to finding skateboarding, discovering freestyle, creating his massively popular video series with Brett Novak, moving to the US, starring in an Apple Watch commercial and ultimately getting sponsored by three of his 1980's dream brands, we cover it all- and much more.

We conquered the WOOHOO yips before this amazing episode! The main science topic was on a new study that examined the causes of injuries in a 5205-athlete sample. The headline finding was relatively intuitive, but the sub-finding was so shocking that we are still picking our jaws up off the floor. We break it down and discuss how it may clarify training theory! And this one was full of our favorite topics! Other topics: the yips in athletes (and podcasters), Megan's Aspen Mountain breakthrough, the interaction of high carb and bicarb to make endurance sports faster, the best protein supplement we have tried, one of our heroes Kate Courtney wins the Leadville 100 mountain bike, Kilian's next project in the USA, Steph Curry doing weight-vest trail running, and the tricky conversation around bodyweight and health happening in women's cycling. Plus there was a Q+A on the mechanics of podcast recording, nutrition considerations for vegan athletes, the complications of rhabdo in ultra athletes, “purposeful flow” in training plans and how that relates to a new study on overload blocks, overcoming fear in racing, daily carb intake, and high carb in the birth process. It finished with a quote that we'll be living by.

Europe is seeing a rapid increase in battery energy storage, but no two markets are quite the same. Each country presents its own blend of policy ambition, grid challenges, market structures, and investor appetite. For developers and capital providers, this means a highly fragmented landscape where understanding the local context is just as critical as getting the technology or financing right. In this episode of Transmission, we take a pan-European view of battery investment looking at how the economics, regulation, and risk profile of projects vary from Belgium to the Baltics. Director of Investment Management for Battery Storage at Aquila Clean Energy EMEA - Kilian Leykam joins Ed to explore everything from four-hour assets in the Benelux to co-location in Italy, capacity markets in Greece, and merchant risk in Germany, this conversation explores what it takes to scale a diversified battery portfolio in today's evolving energy landscape. In this episode, we cover:Project development across multiple European markets: How site selection, policy maturity and market signals drive investment strategy.Four-hour storage in the Benelux: What early operational data tells us about long-duration battery economics.Germany and Italy: Why grid support and flexibility services are gaining momentum. The role of harmonisation: How EU-wide reforms may help or hinder cross-border battery investmentMarket risks and revenue models: From merchant exposure to capacity payments and co-location opportunities.About our guest:Kilian Leykam is Director of Investment Management for Battery Storage at Aquila Clean Energy, where he oversees one of Europe's most geographically diverse battery portfolios.
Dr. Kilian Kelly, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Cynata Therapeutics, has taken on the challenge of manufacturing stem cell therapies consistently and at scale in order to drive the advancements necessary for the next generation of regenerative medicine. Cynata is employing a novel approach that utilizes a single source of pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and mesenchymal cell ancestors (MCAs) to generate mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Lead programs are targeting graft-versus-host disease, osteoarthritis, and diabetic wounds, where clinical trials have shown great promise to treat these and other diseases. Kilian explains, "We're a stem cell regenerative medicine company, and what we're trying to do is to change the way that we can manufacture stem cell therapies in a consistent and scalable way. I'm sure many of your listeners have heard about stem cell therapies of various types. The particular type of cells that we're working on are called mesenchymal stem cells or MSCs. They've shown lots of promise for lots of different purposes, but a real challenge has been making these cells consistently, especially when you try to do that at a large scale. We have a unique novel manufacturing platform, which helps us to address that major challenge." "The way that these cells were historically produced and indeed still are produced in most cases is by harvesting cells from, for example, somebody donating bone marrow or adipose tissue, also known as fat. And those approaches have certainly allowed a lot of early-stage clinical trials to be performed, which showed lots of really exciting results. But often what happens is that when you move to a larger scale using such a process, and you try to make much larger quantities of cells, perhaps using many different donors, you start to see a lot of inconsistency. There are a few reasons for this. When you have inconsistency with a product, it's inevitable that you're going to get inconsistent results." "If you have inconsistent results in a clinical trial, it becomes a bit of a lottery, and sometimes you can have very disappointing results that are hard to explain. So we think that's been a really big issue that has caused a lot of problems in the field. And aside from the impact on clinical trial results, we also need to think about the future when these products are available and on the market, and how you can actually, in practical terms, produce enough of these products. So, in a nutshell, I think that is probably the major challenge that the field has faced." #CynataTherapeutics #StemCellTherapy #RegenerativeMedicine #iPSCs #MSCs #MCAs Cynata.com Download the transcript here

We gulped down some pungent juice before recording this amazing episode! The main topics were the two big pieces of news: Jim Walsmley won't be racing Western States, and Kilian Jornet is making training videos now. Jim is the GOAT and we gave him an 85% chance of winning just last week. He's the supermassive black hole at the center of the Western States galaxy. Without Jim at the start line, how does it change the race? Kilian is the GOAT too (yes, we have a GOAT herd), and he just released a training video! He abides by the "no secrets" approach, and we analyzed every frame of that video to try to find clues about whether he might be beatable. Answer: no. Bonus answer: Kilian is the best and it's fascinating that he started his own video series by talking about his heat training. And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: our magical coaching day at the US Mountain Championships, thoughts on training for mountain races, Unbreakable 2 cancellation, the wild triumph of Simon Yates, a new bicarb gel that could upend the bicarb market, the wild science of broccoli sprouts and a new juice supplement from Nomio, anti-histamines and athletic performance, why we're eating dark chocolate (it tastes good), lung training via breathing devices, the relationship between speed work and form in ultras, a hypothetical about Conner Mantz racing Leadville or Western States, an article in the New York Times on unethical mountaineering, training with a newborn, dealing with life transitions, fitting the Naked Belt, the cost of running, cheaper suphershoes, and an incredible poem on failing and flying.Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew. Also, if Icarus had broccoli sprouts and Kilian's training video, maybe he would have flown a bit longer. We love you all! HUZZAH! We put on our space cowboy outfits for this great episode! The main topic centered on the almost-ubiquitous use of higher carb intakes in recent races, from the Canyons 100k to the Boston Marathon to the cycling classics. What once seemed optional is now mandatory. Where do the next breakthroughs come from? We outline some ideas to try to catch the waves before they become obvious. There was also some fascinating science on warm-weather and metabolic processes, showing reduced carb oxidation rates in heat. That could have big implications for how fueling and GI training changes with harder efforts. And this one was full of the best topics! Other topics: Megan's heat suit debut, our current thinking on heat suit guidelines, David's 50k race, what he is learning approaching Western States, fluid intake, a study on intense PM exercise and sleep, the wild Canyons 100k, Kilian's fascinating training approach for Western States, a follow-up on the shoes dominating the road scene, the Breaking 4 Project, and putting power in your stride, plus a Q+A on steep vert, Jess McClain's Boston Marathon training, and fueling from gas stations! You are all heat champions to us. We took off our armor for this incredible episode! The main discussion might have been one of our most important (and fun) ever: the Big Alta 50k DNF, failure, and what it truly means to go for it. David raced Big Alta because it was somewhere that he couldn't hide. We needed to gather data about what happened at the very edge of human capabilities. And when you F around...sometimes you find out. We hope that you feel a connection to your big scary dreams. Thank you for giving us the courage to dream bigger! And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: racing lessons from Big Alta, why ankles are annoying, guys v. dudes, running your own race, Jim Walmsley dominates at Chianti, Kilian is going to Western States, sauna v. hot tub, going from 0 to 1 to 2 kids, running groups, bike v. treadmill, core work, life "balance" for people with big goals, long-term training builds, and lots more. This episode gives you a raw window into the true story that athletes rarely tell.
