Olympic Marathon Bronze Medalist Molly Seidel on Injury Recovery, Training, Fueling, and Fixing Track & Field Matt from Sweat Elite hosts Olympic marathon bronze medalist Molly Seidel in Flagstaff to discuss her recent Strava Camp experience, her return from a broken-knee injury, and how she is rebuilding by correcting movement patterns with gym-based mobility and muscle activation. Molly explains why she skipped Canyons 50K to prioritize a fall road marathon, outlines her goals to win a major marathon, make World Championship teams, and target LA 2028 after missing Paris. She also breaks down her "unglamorous" marathon builds, including high aerobic volume, true double-threshold training, and a short specific block starting after a tune-up race. Matt and Molly also cover cross-training through skiing, cycling and ElliptiGo, Ethiopia's training culture, diet and race fueling, Puma shoe rotation, critiques of World Athletics around rankings, watchability and doping, plus Molly's race-focused mindset. MERCH Pre-Order - https://nonmembersshop.com/Happy National Eat What You Want Day! We kick off the episode by motivating everyone to stay consistent with their workouts (Erin is officially on week 5 of her pull up journey!) before diving into a highly specific, heated rant about deceptive grocery store produce bags, why are tangerines and limes sold in color matching mesh bags to hide the rotting fruit?! We also celebrate the official launch of our merch store (grab your koozies, hoodies, and mystery trinkets while you can!) and pop open a Recess Mood drink to calm down. Then, we get into the main event: Erin's massive, multi-day recap of the Dick's Sporting Goods Varsity Team brand trip in Tampa. Event planning is officially a sport, proven by Erin walking into a hotel room stocked with a personalized cake, $500 in Stanley gear, and a daily wardrobe. Erin explains how she entered "survival mode" to become a mega extrovert, surviving a upscale carnival complete with a Ferris wheel, and an Adidas yacht party featuring custom Sambas, permanent jewelry, and a saxophone player jamming to Bad Bunny. She also chilled in a speakeasy movie theater in custom pajamas, and finally got to wear her sparkly Adidas tracksuit to a jaw dropping banquet featuring aerial yoga and a hidden 7 piece band. The physical toll of the trip was brutal, featuring a blazing hot "On" HIIT class with "no-nonsense Giovanni" (where Erin and the gym bros were secretly collapsing behind his back) and an insanely hard Pilates session with Molly Seidel's sister, Izzy. Erin also defends her "Grease Girl" status by refusing to wear the provided orange short shorts in the sun. Finally, we debut our highly anticipated on site interview with the Savannah Bananas player who famously face planted doing a backflip on live TV. He reveals the shocking behind-the-scenes details of the crash, the concussion, and the CNN producer's terrible reaction to the blood. We wrap up with a quick rant about the fever dream that is the Tampa airport and beg our listeners to prove to Mike that he isn't just broadcasting to an empty void.

Francesco and Abby Hall are both injured days after Black Canyon 100k. One DNF, one top-five finish, two hard falls. A real conversation about processing setbacks, racing at the front of a historic women's field, and what actually drives a big performance.Abby breaks down how her race unfolded, from a controlled start hitting goal splits, to the fall that cost her minutes mid-race, to a split-for-split battle with Molly Seidel all the way to the finish. The margins were that tight. And what that says about where the women's field is right now is worth paying attention to.There's also a bigger thread running through this episode: what does it mean to perform at the front of a sport that's getting faster and deeper every year? Francesco and Abby talk about the weight of expectations that came with Abby's Western States win last year, and why a race like this one felt like a release as much as a result. They dig into the idea of specificity, why fitness alone doesn't explain a 25-minute improvement over the same course, and why the real gains often come down to execution rather than the lab numbers. And there's a mentality piece worth highlighting: Abby's been drawing inspiration from how gravel cyclists talk about their races, winning, losing, making mistakes, and moving on without letting any single result define them. It's a harder mindset to hold when you're only racing four or five times a year, but she's trying to bring that lightness into how she processes all of this.Raw, honest, and worth an hour of your time.Train with a plan built around you. In this edition of Long Run Archives, Finn Melanson is joined by Brett Hornig and Jeff Colt for a wide-ranging conversation about some of the biggest debates circulating in trail and ultrarunning right now.We begin with a viral moment from the sport: Charlie Lawrence being called out to run a backyard ultra. Could a 100K record holder actually threaten the backyard ultra world record, or is the discipline too specialized for that kind of crossover? The group discusses what determines success in the backyard format and why the event continues to fascinate runners across disciplines.Next, we explore a provocative question making the rounds online: are elite trail runners boring? Are influencers better storytellers than professional athletes, or is that narrative missing the point? Along the way we discuss historical tensions between performance and storytelling in the sport and what audiences actually respond to.In the second half of the episode, we unpack two recent race controversies:• Ultra Trail Snowdonia's major course change after registration opened• The possibility that the historic JFK 50 Mile could move from its traditional course due to funding disputesWhat responsibility do race organizers have when circumstances force major changes after runners have already committed? Finally, we play a round of Overreaction / Underreaction, reacting to statements like:• Molly Seidel is already a Western States podium contender• Jen Lichter could enter the top echelon of the sport with a Western States win• Crowdfunded prize purses may surpass traditional race payouts• Kilian Jornet could still win both Western States and UTMB in the same seasonPartners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next orderNorda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever madeRaide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains Janji - premium trail running apparelKodiak Cakes - my favorite oatmeal and pancakes Momentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order Support the show

It's been common wisdom in endurance sports that the further the race distance gets, the longer it takes to figure it out. But every rule needs an exception to prove it and on this count one needs look no further than the career of Molly Seidel.  After a gold-studded NCAA career at Notre Dame winning titles at 3000, 5000, 10000 and cross country, Seidel's star only seemed to rise higher as the distances grew greater. She made her marathon debut in 2020 at the US Olympic Trials, proving a quick-study at the event with a stunning 2nd placing showing and a spot on the US Olympic Team headed to Tokyo.  A year and a half later, at those pandemic-postponed Olympic Games, She'd once again outperform expectations to run away from the best of the best en route to a brilliant bronze medal. Fast forward to today and it seems her reputation for moving up in distance and throwing down continues to hold true, even with yet another change of surface. In January she marked the start of a new chapter on the trail scene with a win and course record clocking at the Banderas 50k in Texas. Weeks later, she would take another huge leap forward at the famously competitive Black Canyon 100k in Arizona.  Facing some of the best trail talent in the world, Seidel turned a lack of experience into gold, claiming a 4th-place finish and snagging an elusive “Golden Ticket”, securing her a place in the biggest ultra of them all, the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run.  Today, Molly joins the show to recap her incredible rise through the trail running ranks, what it's looked like to double her race distance with every start, and how she's applying the lessons of a legendary career on the roads and track to a the new challenges of the trails. They start with an overview of the 100K, which both of them spectated virtually. The races at the front were FAST with the course records going down on both sides, plus Molly Seidel earning a golden ticket to Western States for her 4th place finish. Then, Des shares her experience in the 50K race from start to finish including expectations, the trail community vibes, and a tough day that had her neck/back locking up on her in the final 3rd of the race. She got it done in spite of those challenges and is happy with the finish. Kara can relate b/c her trail debut at the Leadville Marathon was a tough day as well. All in all, this was a great learning experience for Des, and now she looks ahead to the Marathon de Sables. Then, they talk about the expectations at the Winter Olympics, especially for top American hopefuls, and wonder outloud if it is too much or misguided. Finally as usual, they close the show with a Top 5 that you won't want to miss. Everyone show Des some love for putting herself out there on the trails!

I'm back with Allison Mercer, my correspondent on everything, and we start with the most important news of the week: I apparently lost another award, and I am not interested in being reminded about 2025 when we are already deep into 2026.From there we get into World Cross Country Championships, which somehow had a full Florida theme including obstacle chaos, heat, and a crowd that sounded like 10,000 people yelling nonstop. We talk about what made the broadcast work, why team scoring makes the whole field matter, and why cross country in the Winter Olympics would be the best kind of mess. Then we pivot to the trail world heating up early, with Olympians popping over to trails, Burrito League spreading like a virus, and the golden ticket chase being the kind of storyline we actually want more of. We end with ideas for how running media can get better fast: less six-month pre-race content, more post-race coverage, more crew perspective, and please, for the love of everything, mic people up.If you want the sport to be more fun, more human, and more watchable, this is the blueprint. Or at least a rant disguised as a blueprint.Chapters00:00 The Award Dilemma and New Beginnings08:02 World Cross Country Championships: A Florida Experience11:03 The Evolution of Cross Country Broadcasting14:10 The Future of Cross Country in the Olympics17:00 Trail Running: New Faces and Fresh Perspectives20:11 The Shift from Road to Trail Running23:37 The Burrito League Phenomenon26:26 Molly Seidel's Transition to Ultra Running29:38 The Importance of Community in Running32:26 Future Trends in Endurance Sports36:48 Exciting Developments in Running Events38:21 Training for the 100K Championship Team39:59 Planning for Success in Ultra Running42:05 Exploring Potential in Ultra Running44:32 The Future of Trail Running Events48:10 Humanizing Athletes in the Sport53:11 Innovative Coverage in Trail Running54:14 The Roach Approach and Its Impact58:06 Post-Race Coverage and Athlete ReflectionsSupport our Sponsors: Sawyer: https://sawyerdirect.net/Janji (code: Freeoutside): https://snp.link/a0bfb726CS Coffee: CSinstant.coffeeGarage Grown Gear: https://snp.link/db1ba8abSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside#Trailrunning #Runningnews #Outdoors #Outdooradventure

After a month-long hiatus and plenty of concerned messages, HappyCast is officially back — and no, Andrew and Stephanie did not break up. In this Season 5 kickoff, the two dive straight into the chaos with candid catch-ups, unfiltered humor, and a surprisingly deep conversation about loneliness, dopamine hits, and why witty banter might actually be a mental health necessity. From AI-suggested “safe flirty texts” to starting arguments on Facebook just to feel something, Stephanie explains how being too quiet for too long can lead to… questionable choices. On the running side, Andrew recaps his current “waitlist surfing” era, the rise of the Burrito League (yes, burritos are a legitimate training incentive), and a wild Bandera weekend filled with heckling, aid station chaos, unexpected celebrities, and some truly elite volunteer moments. Bandera stories range from Molly Seidel's historic performance to lei-wearing confusion at a small-town Texas bar, proving once again that trail running culture is equal parts grit and absurdity. The episode closes with reflection, reset energy, and a handoff to the rest of Season 5 — a season focused less on rankings and more on longevity, healing, and running races the way they're meant to be run. DNFs are discussed without shame, big goals are still on the horizon, and both hosts agree on one thing: this podcast keeps them grounded. Welcome back to HappyCast — the banter is back, the miles are messy, and we're just getting started.Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. We got our big juicy pumps for this amazing episode! We started by talking about a couple pieces of personal news, including a shockingly cool number 4 ranking in the Ultra Runner of the Year voting... and some tough health findings from an MRI. The newest shoe review is a medical boot. It's still better than most trail shoes. The big science discussion was on a pair of studies on advanced female runners, with both finding low carbohydrate intake on training days. One of the studies on elite athletes found that 94.3% had low energy availability! We broaden out the discussion into nutritional approaches generally. And David tries to broaden it out into a thinkpiece about the food pyramid. At a certain point, maybe your thinkpiece is so wrong that you eventually loop around and become right? Don't answer that. And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: our approach to training and health with the foot, a study on using heat training to substitute for other types of training, what we'd spend with $200 a month, how we are making money off AI, the Burrito League, some quick thoughts on continuous lactate monitors, Shelby Houlihan and Molly Seidel setting records at trail races, Raya for trail and ultra runners, sleep and FKTs, blood tests and training for downhills in a flat place. We love you all! The Free Outside Show is back for the new year, and I'm joined by our correspondent on everything, Allison Mercer. We're doing the exact opposite of the usual “five months from now” preview content that other podcasts are doing, and instead talking about what's actually happening this weekend: Bandera (with Molly Seidel), Houston Marathon for the OTQ watch, and why you should care about World Cross Country in Tallahassee (yes, it's watchable on Peacock, yes, team tactics make it way more fun than you think, and yes, there are statue alligators on the course). From there, we get into the real chaos: Burrito League expansion, why it works as an “anyone can play” running challenge, and how these community-wide games can be more accessible than the typical big-race ecosystem. Then we go full rant mode on year-end lists, award season fatigue, media bias, and why FKT stories often get misunderstood or flattened by outlets that do not actually live in that world. We also touch on sponsorship transparency, influencer economics, West Coast bias, and why the sport would be better off funding real coverage of barrier-breaking performances instead of paying for interchangeable promo codes. New year, same old us.
