The preseason is over, for LAFC at least, so that must mean it’s time for another episode of “The Most LAFC Podcast on Earth”, Defenders of the Banc! Welcome to Episode 142. There’s a bit of banter at the beginning of the episode, complete with Filly’s thoughts on Wrestlemania, Scarf heading back into the classroom for the first time in over 13 months, and a shoutout to the LA Tourism Board for helping us catch the match at the Banc. This Day In LAFC History has a ton of LAFC-relevant birthdays, along with a kit that Filly actually doesn’t have in his closet! Pepsi and the LAFC Foundation are up to some really good things in the community, and Scarf finds out he might be a Pepsi guy after all. LAFC surprises the millions (and millions!) with two new trialists, Mamadou Fall and Julian Gaines, both of whom actually make the 18 this weekend! The Lights get a goal from the Moose while Scarf does several deep dives to find LAFC connections! The crux of the episode centers around yet another preseason tie, this time a 3-3 draw with the Revs. LAFC finds itself in yet another 2-0 hole, only to dig itself out and salvage a point at home once more. Corey Baird looked solid, the keeper position is still up for grabs, and Eddie Segura scores a goal! Filly Wonka (you’ll get it) runs down all the ins, outs, do’s, and don’ts about our opening match against Austin FC. When will we hear about tickets? Where do we park? What can we bring inside? Check out this episode for all the details on that, a pretty solid rundown of their roster, and a trip down memory lane of when the USMNT used to qualify for World Cups and Olympic Games! Enjoy Episode 142, and, in just 4 more sleeps, our first One More Sleep of 2021 will be live on IG AND up on YouTube!
On this weeks episode we recap our departure from the MLS is back tournament at the hands of Orlando city. Joining us this week for the interview is Alina Beruff from the LAFC foundation. We discuss her background and charitable work in the LA community.
The headline is almost becoming redundant: “RemiMartinn Wins Again”, and we couldn’t be happier! The Crusading Champion of the Controllers, Martin Oregel, takes to Twitch once again in another installment of the LAFC Gaming Charity FIFA Challenge, this time against Chicago’s BITW7. It’s time for Episode 94 and more victorious exploits from our eMLS gamer. RemiMartinn absolutely dismantles Chicago’s eMLS gamer, BITW7, in the best-of-three series in the name of the LAFC Foundation. Virtual Vela, Rossi, and a moment of glory for Jordan Harvey are all part of another big weekend for Remi. You can hear the entire recap of Remi’s rout right here on Defenders of the Banc. Lots of news and notes abound in this episode! Filly and the Scarf take a trip around the other major soccer leagues, bringing you news about the Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, the EPL, and the Eredivisie. Back home, Alicia Rodriguez is up to more good things over at Angels on Parade, this time chronicling the whereabouts of LAFC players of yore. The moratorium on training has been extended, but it hasn’t killed Steven Beitashour’s desire to get back on a roster in MLS. Will Ferrell joins the fight against COVID-19 as part of the All-In Challenge. Where does Carlos Vela stack up in the pantheon of Los Angeles’ athletes? And what about LAFC? You’ll have to listen to find out! Also on this episode, Filly learns the word “demoralizing” while Scarf does a decent job at pronouncing Monchengladbach. And yes, that was a Nico Czornomaz sighting on the podcast! Thank you all for participating in #Haturday, especially on one of the hottest days of the year so far! We can’t wait to unveil next week’s fun, and to celebrate LAFC Day with all of you on the 27th! See you next week for Episode 95!
Max and Vince are coming to you again with all the LAFC news and information you need. The podcast welcomes a very special guest from the LA County Board of Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas. Before the interview with their guest, Max and Vince talk about some of the ways LAFC is helping during the COVID-19 crisis and how you can help or get help as part of the new Black & Gold Community Fund. Vince shares his talks with the LAFC Foundation and 3252 leadership after they made a major donation of masks and money to help frontline workers at LAUSD grab-and-go sites. Mark Ridley-Thomas joins the pod to talk about the work his office is doing around the city, what it's been like having LAFC as a partner in helping the local community, and what needs to happen for us to be able to return to matches at Banc of California Stadium. After the Supervisor's interview, Max and Vince return to talk about conversations they had with Bob Bradley and John Thorrington this week on the state of the team.
There's no need to look for Polish MMA or Hungarian soccer! Here on Episode 90 of Defenders of the Banc, we've got all the details on the domination of the "Digital Derby" in our first episode covering eMLS!While physical sports are on hold for now, leave it to our good friend Alex Sale and everyone at LAFC and LAFC Gaming to keep the competitive juices flowing. Martin "RemiMartinn" Oregel, LAFC's first eMLS competitor, and Giuseppe "The Godfather" Guastella, Carson's eMLS representative got together for a wonderful cause during these tough times: The LA Charity FIFA Challenge. What's better than one "e-Trafico" match? How about four?! RemiMartinn dominated the first game, 3-0, but Giuseppe answered with a 1-0 win in the second match. It came down to a third match to decide a winner, and after 86', things looked grim for our Black and Gold Defender of Twitch. Leave it to the MVP, Carlos Vela, to find more magic with that digital left foot and net the equalizer with just 3 virtual minutes remaining. What a goal!Just like that, what was supposed to be a best-of-three quickly became a best-of-four. RemiMartinn saved his best performance for last, a dominating 3-0 win behind a hat trick for, of course, Carlos Vela, and just like that, the Digital Derby was ours!It wasn't just a win ON the pitch. LAFC's fans on Twitch, which at one point numbered over 16,000 (!), raised over $5200 to support the LAFC Foundation and aid in the fight to defeat COVID-19. Wow! We love our Black and Gold family! There are the usual suspects on the episode: This Day in LAFC History, LAFC News and Notes, and some pretty good banter between the boys. Which MLS superstar called Vela the best player in CONCACAF? Who is on LAFC's Mount Rushmore? Is Filly really GQ Mexico's newest subscriber? And why does Scarf want to be on the cover of Highlights? You'll have to tune in to Episode 90 to find out!As always, thank you so much for listening to Defenders of the Banc! We've got some spectacular content coming, and we really appreciate your support!
Like the rest of Los Angeles, Max and Vince are staying safe at home but they're still thinking about the LAFC community. We've got another packed podcast. The guys start by talking about the latest news around MLS. The league has mandated teams refrain from training for another week. With that in mind, Vince spoke with LAFC Head Performance Coach Daniel Guzman about the effects of the layoff on the LAFC players and he shares what the team is doing to stay sharp. Max and. Vince talk about how the time away might affect teams when the season resumes and Max talks about his conversation with Mark-Anthony Kaye on Instagram Live. After the news, it's on to the "Digital Derby" between LAFC and the Galaxy on Sunday. Max and Vince welcome LAFC's RemiMartinn to the show to talk about eMLS and Sunday's charity match to raise awareness and money as the world continues battling the novel COVID-19 coronavirus. Max is on the call for Remi's matches against the Galaxy's GGGodfather and it will all be streamed live on Twitch. Proceeds from the event are going to the LAFC Foundation and Galaxy Foundation. In addition to the match, we learn a little bit more about how RemiMartinn got involved in eMLS and with LAFC and how gamers are changing people's perceptions of video games.
As the season winds down, the excitement at the Banc is heating up! It's time for Episode 55 of Defenders of the Banc!LAFC hosted in-state "rivals" San Jose, and things did NOT go well for the Smurfs. The Black and Gold emerged victorious, to the tune of a 4-0 home beatdown, behind two goals from the future MVP, Carlos Vela, including one that will certainly be up for Goal of the Year awards at the end of the season. It wasn't just Carlitos, however, as Diego Rossi continued his climb up the MLS scoring charts. Jordan Harvey and Tristan Blackmon both saved goals with clearances from the back line to preserve Tyler Miller's clean sheet. In a game full of "Wait, What?!" moments, two from the second half stole the show. The first was the return of Mohamed El-Munir, taking the pitch about 6 weeks after the horrific injury suffered at the hands of Zlatan. The Banc was electric when El-Mo checked in. And the redemption story is complete, as Josh Perez, after a series of near misses and heartbreaks, finally finds the back of the net for the first time in his MLS career. Also on this episode, joining us for an impromptu visit in the third chair is Black Army's own "Apple Juice", Vincent Ford. This Day in LAFC History recalls the first bit of hardware won by the Academy. Finally, the Supporters Shield update gets a whole lot shorter, as there seems to be just one other team (NYCFC) worth tracking. LAFC is poised for history this season, but before we can claim shields or titles, there is that little matter awaiting the Black and Gold on Sunday: the clash with Carson at the Banc.A special thank you to our military servicemen and women, as LAFC held Military Appreciation Night during this game, and another shoutout to the incomparable Alina Beruff of the LAFC Foundation. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did putting it together for you, and we look forward to recapping our first W against Carson in just 4 days. Defend the Banc!
Oh yes, it’s Ladies Night! The Defenders of the Banc turn the episode over to Panda (@amandabrooke32 ) and Scarfette (@lafcnina) in celebration of Ladies Night. The girls cover highlights of the female-focused match centering on the amazing career of Mia Hamm, one of LAFC’s owners, and the recent USWNT game, looking towards the start of the Women’s World Cup.Of course, we discuss game stats and highlights (some record breaking) and bring on the tornado in heels, Alina Beruff, Executive Director of the LAFC Foundation, for a special interview. Alina talks about her history with the club, the sauce for success, and how you can get involved with the LAFC Foundation. We hope you enjoy this special takeover episode. Please visit the LAFC Foundation behind section 135 at the next home game!
