In part two of the discussion with Dr. Tom Epperson, president of InnerWill Leadership Institute, he reminds listeners that leadership is not contained to the workplace but extends into every facet of life. Effective leadership is centered around people and clear communication within relationships, whether that applies to coworkers, family members, or communities. The good news is that there isn't one personality type that makes the best leaders. Tom coaches individuals within an organization to have difficult conversations, receive honest feedback, and work diligently to strengthen areas of vulnerability regardless of their personality strengths and weaknesses. One of the greatest challenges for leaders in this current climate is navigating change in a way that encourages engagement from team members. When a business is in the process of adapting to change, it's imperative to demonstrate transparency and community mindset throughout the entire process. That way employees feel a sense of ownership in the process and are more willing to actively participate. Main Topics The benefits of giving and receiving constructive feedback (02:45) Abundance mindset vs. lack mentality (05:05) All businesses are a people business (5:38) Personality styles and their relation to leadership (08:50) How leaders can successfully navigate change (14:45) Tom's book InnerWill: Developing Better People, Braver Leaders, and a Wiser World through the Practice of Values Based Leadership (18:40) Episode Linkshttps://innerwill.org/ Go to TheFridayHabit.com to find show notes for this episode. Research shows that when people act on their core values, they are more engaged with their work, more fulfilled in their lives, and more likely to attract people and experiences that build their success. Dr. Tom Epperson, president of InnerWill Leadership Institute, coaches leaders to ignite human potential by transforming an organization's culture with clear core values. Having experienced firsthand the impact of transitioning from a profit-centered business to one that seeks to serve the community, he now helps others make choices that line up with what's truly important to them. Before an organization can align with its core values, leaders must be able to clearly define their values. This takes work! One way to discover your core values is by reflecting on where you spend your time, money, and energy. Some best practices for implementing values-based leadership in business and at home are building awareness, realizing potential, developing relationships, taking action, and reflecting on choices. Tom utilizes these interconnected approaches to help leaders develop into impactful pillars in their communities. After all, strong leaders lead by example. With intentional action, leaders can create thriving businesses and relationships built on a solid foundation of integrity. He is the author of InnerWill, Developing Better People, Braver Leaders, and a Wiser World Through the Practice of Values-Based Leadership.Tom believes that leadership is a choice, not a title, and that our responsibility as leaders is to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us. Tom balances high expectations of himself and others with relentless optimism about the ability of individuals to make our organizations, families, and communities amazing places to live, work, and grow. Tom believes that leadership is a powerful force for good in the world, if we choose to do so; his personal mission in life is to help others develop the skills to make that choice more often than not.Tom works hard to be a great husband and father; he's married to a strong, creative woman and has two fantastic sons who have taught him that we can learn as much about ourselves and our leadership at home as we can at work.Born out of Luck Companies, InnerWillLeadership Institute was founded to teach other leaders how to build values-based organizations which ignite the potential in people. After an 85-year history as a successful business, President and CEO Charlie Luck IV realized that the business had so much more potential if alignment and collaboration of senior management could be improved. This led to a Values Based Leadership (VBL) journey—for his family and for the workplace. Ultimately, the Values Based Leadership principles and practices were shared with every employee at Luck Companies and every Luck family member. As a result, Luck Companies is the largest family-held and family-run aggregate business in the country, ranks in the top three most engaged places to work in the US, and is a thriving organization built for the future. The impact to Luck Companies, and to the individuals touched and transformed by the VBL journey, inspired the launch of InnerWill. Leadership is a choice, not a title –a conscious choice to work first on yourself to in turn positively impact the lives of those around you. Developing self-awareness takes tenacity and grit, while standing up for your core values take courage. We reflected on our definition of leadership and the strength needed to achieve it and chose the name InnerWill.Today, InnerWill teaches the necessary skills to strengthen leadership capabilities and drive results through the practice of VBL. Tune in to my conversation with the unparalleled leadership expert Maria Gamb about the importance of values-based leadership to build a strong brand and reputational capital.Maria dives deep into:
Having closed out a month of Jewish holiday celebrations in October, I find myself reflecting on how holidays do such a good job of highlighting the importance of routines, rituals, and experiences. Each of them serves a unique role in our daily lives. A routine is a consistent, repeated action we take that helps set expectations and provide structure. For my family during the holidays, that looks like sitting down to have breakfast as a family before my husband goes to synagogue. It keeps us connected during an overwhelming time. A ritual—while similar to a routine—is a meaningful practice that gives an action a greater sense of purpose and helps ground you in your values, such as my family gathering to light the candles on the menorah during Hanukkah. This ritual anchors us to the holiday's values of connection and family. Experiences are a bit different. Although routines and rituals are types of experiences, what I really mean are the formative experiences that shape who you are. They're a way for us to connect with those around us on a deeper level, in a way that no material item can replicate—which is why this past Hanukkah, my husband and I decided to give our kids experiences rather than gifts. What routines, rituals, and experiences have in common is the opportunity they give us to ground ourselves in the present moment. And when we're present, we have the chance to zero in on our values. You can leverage this power within your center. By considering how you can anchor your routines, rituals, and experiences to the values of your school, you can nourish the connections among your team and transform the culture of your center. In this week's episode, I'm talking about how to utilize routines, rituals, and experiences in integrating values into the culture of your school. It's the final part in our 3-part series on values-based leadership. Join me for a conversation about: The difference between routines, rituals, and experiences Why rituals are critical for building culture and teaching values How experiences can help you nourish connections among your team How to choose rituals and create experiences that anchor you to your values As we head into the final months of the year, take the time to reflect on how you can leverage the power of routines, rituals, and experiences in weaving your company values into the fibers of your school culture. Many of us have those “special” family stories—you know, the ones you've heard a million times that have been passed down from generation to generation. For me, the one that always comes to mind is when my grandfather traveled to New York and met the Rebbe, one of the most influential Jewish leaders of the 20th century. My grandfather was born in Russia during the communist regime, and in 1979, he and his wife fled to Israel. There, he worked three jobs just so that he could save extra money and one day go to New York to meet the Rebbe, who was instrumental in helping them escape. After months of hard work, my grandfather had finally saved enough money and traveled to New York during the High Holidays that year. When it finally came time for my grandfather to meet the Rebbe, the Rebbe asked him if he had bought his wife a gift. Dejectedly, my grandfather replied that he had spent all his savings to come to New York and couldn't possibly afford to bring anything home. Without pause, the Rebbe gave my grandfather the name of a jeweler where he could buy a gift—and when the Rebbe tells you to do something, you listen. When he returned to Israel, my grandfather gifted my grandmother a set of precious pearls he had bought from the jeweler the Rebbe had recommended. She wore those pearls proudly until her very last day, and after she died, they were passed down to my mother. When I was a kid, the tale of my grandfather's journey to New York was just a story, like the ones I read in books. At the time, the only special meaning it held was that it was about my family. It wasn't until I became an adult that I came to realize the value in the story and why my family chose to repeat it again and again: showing love and appreciation for the ones we care for. You see, storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to influence, teach, and inspire—not just in your family, but also your school. When you understand how to leverage the power of storytelling, you can use the stories that happen within your school as anchors to teach values so they become woven into the fabric of your center. This will create a ripple effect that extends beyond you and your team. It's a tool that has the potential to impact both the culture of your center and your community in a profound way—one that no amount of training ever could. That's why in this week's episode, I'm diving into storytelling and how you can leverage it in values-based leadership. It's the first of a 3-episode series that explores how values are taught in homes and schools and how they help you build a legacy. Join me for a conversation about: What makes storytelling such a powerful tool in shifting your culture Why values play a key role at home and school Translating values into decision-making The transition into leading from your values (HINT: It's messy) Each one of us has stories that paint a picture of who we are, where we come from, and where we're going. Learn to use your school's stories to shift the culture of your center and create a lasting impact on your community. Learn more and apply for the Director's Inner Circle & Owner's HQ: http://Chanie.me/jointhedic We'll be diving even deeper into the power of storytelling at the 2023 Summit of Excellence, which centers on building legacy through values-based leadership. Listen in as we talk through how business is all about enriching people's lives with education, providing incomes so others can work and support their families, and how business is so important in our human evolution. We talk through the challenges of our times, of how the power has shifted as so many of us are re-evaluating our relationships in all areas of life, particularly with regard to our relationship with employers, as we realize that one of the most important decisions we each have to make is where we will spend our time and how we will do it. If you have ever found yourself yearning for a life with more meaning then I encourage you to listen to this deeply resonant dialogue for insights. I suspect you'll enjoy Maria's perspective on how we can find more meaning in our individual lives, in our role as leaders, and also in our workplaces. Key Takeaways Maria's life journey has brought her to create a life of more meaning for herself and how she did it How to lead in ways that create more meaning for your people What it means to be truly authentic The insight is that we're all in the relationship business, investing in people is truly important How everything you want and need is right in front of you, but if you're moving too fast you won't see it! Pat Pearson, M.S.S.W. author, and psychotherapist has found what you create in life is largely determined by what you think you deserve. This podcast focuses on the psychology of stopping self-sabotage and the recovery process of truly creating the life you want and deserve! Do you find yourself procrastinating? You have that report due at noon but you feel compelled to clean your office before sending it. That is a form of procrastination. Procrastination is one of the most common forms of Self-Sabotage. It's almost the New Year, which means it's the perfect time to reflect on the first year of the Mission Driven Business podcast. In this special Year in Reflection episode, Brian re-lives some of the best moments from the first 21 episodes of the podcast. You'll hear some of the insights, strengths, and hope shared by the diverse podcast guests on their respective episodes. Brian also shares some of his favorite nuggets of wisdom, and he recounts how each guests' story ties into the larger podcast theme -- that you can make money and serve a purpose. Episode Highlights There is no one definition of mission-driven business. If you've listened to the podcast, you know that the first thing Brian asks his guests is to describe what a mission-driven business means to them. That's because mission-driven businesses are distinct, and everyone has a different answer. One of Brian's favorite answers came from Phuong Luong, who shared a quote she heard in grad school. “Don't ask yourself what the world needs,” she said. “Instead, ask yourself what makes you come alive and go do that. Because what the world needs is for more people to come alive.” Regardless of their definition, Brian makes sure listeners know that your business can make money and serve a purpose. It's a point echoed by many of the guests on the podcast. In the very first episode, Dawn Hancock summarized the principle by saying, “Profit does matter. It just doesn't have to be the only thing.” But Brian Floriani may have said it most succinctly in episode 18: “No margin. No mission.” Everyone has a different journey. Every entrepreneur on the show has had a different path to their career. Brian highlighted how in episode two, Bill Bynum credited his childhood experiences as fundamental to him later running one of the largest community development financial institutions (CDFIs) in the U.S. Other entrepreneurs had numerous twists on their paths running companies with purpose and profit. In episode 13, attorney Nici Kersey shared how running her own businesses wasn't something she planned, but came after her company let her go because of a military move. Nothing is perfect. Unforeseen circumstances are a given with entrepreneurial life. In episode 11, Lauren Klafke opened up about how her work and home life adjusted when her business started booming at the same time she was caring for a newborn and overseeing a house remodel. One way to navigate unforeseen circumstances is to know your values. Perhaps the best example yet of letting your values guide you is financial planner River Nice. In episode 20, River shared how their values first guided them to leave the corporate world and try their hand at entrepreneurship, then again when defining their niche. The result is that River's day-to-day work is aligned with their strengths and values. “I'm just so happy on a day-to-day basis,” River said. “Who knew life could be this good? It feels like bragging, but that's the point, right? The point of this podcast is that life can be this good, and you can do it, too.” Learn from the experts' experiences. While it's nice to hear about purpose and values, podcast listeners have most enjoyed learning the strategies and tactics guests rely upon to run their home and work lives. In episode 16, the owners of Columbus Running Company played up the importance of community, while in episode 3, Jacob Padrón praised the merits of asking for help. But Brian particularly appreciated the insights of Nici Kersey on how to let go of perfectionism: watch baseball. “Watching baseball made me really focus more on the fact that you don't have to be perfect,” Nici said. “These players are the best in the world at being a baseball player, and they mess up all the time, right?” Self-care isn't selfish. Brian always ends the episode by asking each guest to share anything surprising they've learned on their journey. One of the most commented lines ever on the podcast came from Pamela Capalad's answer to this very question. “Running a business mostly sucks,” she said in episode 5. While running a mission-driven can suck at times, all entrepreneurs on the podcast say the freedom and fulfillment are well worth pushing the uncertainty and overcoming the inevitable obstacles. But the grit needed to do that can be hard to learn, said Mark Suh in episode 21. “That belief in yourself has to be strong enough that you don't quit,” he said. While the year has been filled with wisdom, Brian's favorite piece of advice also came from the answer to this last question when Emlen praised the importance of self-care. In episode 10, Emlen explained how incorporating self-care into his regimented schedule has helped him ultimately have a more productive day. “It was the aspect of tracking over time that made me realize, when I do this, I was a better husband, I was a better dad, I was more patient with the kids,” he said. The Mission Driven Business podcast was born out of his passion for helping social entrepreneurs create businesses with purpose and profit. On the podcast, Brian talks with diverse entrepreneurs and the people who support them. Listeners hear stories of experiences, strength, and hope and get practical advice to help them build businesses that might just change the world, too.
